Oh so the pick is KU. SHUT IT DOWN.

I noticed that quote too. Throw all the lobs to Romeo.

Langford • Jan 27, 2018 07:56 PM

Oh I know he was. I can’t think a team at the back of the first is looking at Malik and valuing him more than a guy like Mitchell Robinson, Landry Shamet, Brandon McCoy, or Hami Diallo.

@BeddieKU23 I agree. UK is getting involved too. I don’t have a good feel for it at all.

Recruiting Thread • Jan 26, 2018 11:42 PM

EJ isn’t going to Duke unless one or both of Bolden and DeLaurier leave. At least that’s what my Duke contact told me.

Langford • Jan 26, 2018 11:41 PM

@justanotherfan yeah... that’s not happening.

Langford • Jan 26, 2018 07:05 PM

Reading the tea leaves, and from a couple people I’ve talked to around IU, KU should get Romeo if there’s a role. If for some weird reason Vick leaves and Newman comes back, I think we get Romeo. We move Newman to the role Charlie Moore would’ve had, and start 3 of Newman, Grimes, Dotson, and Langford.

@BeddieKU23 Hooooly :poop: Jalen Wilson. He is a kid I think we can close on too.

JRE receiving the pre-KU commitment drop. :coffee: I don't care where Markese is ranked, I like him long term for us. He has a lot of stuff you can't teach.

Okongwu will end up at UCLA.

Still sleeping on Williamson imo.

Absolutely. We’re going to need at least one, probably more, wings in the class. I could easily see Cunliffe gone by then. So it’s possible to add Achiwua and Wilson. Precious can play some 4 as well. Glad to see Zach make a move up. Ideally, he’d back up Grimes for a year before taking the reins. Agree on Jacobs. I could see him as a RS since he’ll be behind Dotson and Moore, and maybe Harvey.

Guys I' need some info - -I'm confused • Jan 25, 2018 07:55 PM

Bottom line: we have 12 players now. 2 are definitely leaving. That makes 10. We have 3 signed. That makes 13 without anyone leaving. If someone did (Malik) then KU has room for a Langford or Ogbaji.

At this point I am in favor of mushing Cunliffe for Agbaji.

Also I still think Newman is leaving for sure.

Or Langford!

Billy leaving freed up the last scholarship, so nobody has to leave early unless Langford commits.

New Givony mock has Graham at 37, Svi at 47, and that’s it

mayjay said:

Sure, he is 7 feet. And he makes FTs in practice, too. And if you just wish hard enough, Santa will bring you a car next Christmas.

Just a half inch off. Not like that makes a difference. He still clanks them in practice too.

Fwiw, Doke isn’t on Sam Vecenie’s top 100. Other notables: Graham is at 37, Billy at 60, Svi at 67, Vick at 81.

@kjayhawks works for me. We’ll see how close Hoop Summit is. For the record, Nike and the NBA had Cheick at 6’9. They both had JoJo at 7’. And Cliff at 6’8. But I’m sure you’re right, they decided to fudge Udoka and just Udoka.

@kjayhawks why wouldn’t you? Just because you disagree with it? 6’11.5ā€ plus a 7’5 wingspan is legit size for a center at any level.

@kjayhawks no problem. http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Udoka-Azubuike-7287/ ↗

@cragarhawk last time he was measured for a camp he was 6’11.5 with a 7’5 wingspan. So yeah, he’s large.

If Udoka is a 20 point scorer in the NBA I’ll eat my shoes. He’s also not a good rebounder or shot blocker yet. Those are going to be key if he wants any future in the NBA.

I don’t think Doke would be drafted. Cheick actually had some skill: he could really run and actually had a shooting stroke. Plus great length. Totally different other than they’re both African.

Langford • Jan 23, 2018 04:42 PM

Bossi said today that Langford is still really open to all 3 schools, and that KU is in an interesting spot since the backcourt could be VERY crowded.

Recruiting Thread • Jan 23, 2018 04:40 PM

I've got us penciled in for JRE, Jacobs, Harvey, and one of Hurt/Lawson/Achiuwa/Leech/Stanley. It's really too early to tell who Self and co. will really target on the wing. Also we could see an end to one and done as soon as the 2019 draft, so we'll see. Add in potential immediate transfer eligibility, and college hoops could be insane as far as roster movement over the next couple offseasons. If the class of 2019 can go pro right out of HS, it creates an interesting dilemma for next year's freshmen. Do you leave after a year in an absolutely loaded draft? Or do you stick around for 2 years and compete with the 2020 class. My feeling is a lot of marginal OAD types (including Grimes, Dotson, and Silvio) end up staying for at least a second year. It could even ripple down to this season. If it seems pretty likely that the 19 class can go pro, it'll push marginal underclassmen into this upcoming draft to avoid the stacked 2019 group.

@BShark Mich State

Who will be down. We should get 3 in a row there. Which will be huge. @Bshark Trent wants to be, but Bagley has kind of eaten into his role some. He’ll declare and get feedback. With Zion there, my feeling is he goes knowing that he’ll be a bit player there. Ditto Bolden

Recruiting Thread • Jan 21, 2018 01:34 AM

We’ll be better. Guessing Trent and Bolden now peace out.

Day dreaming about next years team • Jan 20, 2018 08:47 PM

My only question mark for next season is the wing, and it’s just uncertainty, not thinking it’ll be a weakness. We’ll have either Vick, Langford, or Garrett starting at the 3. We’ll be totally fine.

I think Langford goes to Vandy, if your a top 10 pick potentially your gonna get shots at Vandy over what KU has. Its a business decision as they stressed

I think if Vick leaves, we get him. Self has a great record of putti wings in the NBA.

Recruiting Thread • Jan 20, 2018 08:25 PM

@BShark same here. I think Newman is the only one. Which if Langford goes to Vandy, I’d take this kid. He’s on a really nice development trajectory.

Recruiting Thread • Jan 20, 2018 08:18 PM

@BShark I don’t think we offer until the roster is more clear. If nobody leaves, we don’t have a scholarship anyway.

Why is there no news on Preston? • Jan 19, 2018 12:30 AM

One theory that’s been floated is that Billy is done for the year (like Austin Wiley) and KU just isn’t announcing it, with the intention being Billy come back next year. I don’t buy it. I think KU really believes he’ll be cleared at some point.

Wasn’t TJ Pugh recruited as a ā€œpreferredā€ walk on?

There's really no such thing as a preferred walk on, other than they may not have to try out for the team. I think the rub comes in the NCAA's definition of recruited, since it's actually pretty narrow:

(a) Providing the prospective student-athlete with an official visit;
(b) Having an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete’s parents, relatives or legal guardians; or
(c) Issuing a National Letter of Intent or the institution’s written o er of athletically related financial aid to the prospective student-athlete. Issuing a written offer of athletically related financial aid to a prospective student-athlete to attend a summer session prior to full-time enrollment does not cause the prospective student-athlete to become recruited.

As long as you don't do those things, a player can walk on because he wasn't "recruited." At least that's my understanding.

Recruiting Thread • Jan 18, 2018 08:44 PM

@JayHawkFanToo unfortuanately no. Once you're recruited as a player, you can't walk on.

The more important question is...is Newman NBA material now? Will one additional year at at KU make him NBA material?

Based on what I have seen to date my answer would be no and no but I would love to be wrong on this one.

To me, the only way Malik ever sniffs a NBA roster is as a PG. If he comes back (HUGE if), his best bet would be to ask Self to let him be more of a PG early in the year while Dotson gets his feet under him. He's got the size and athletic ability to be a NBA PG, but really needs to work on his playmaking ability.

At this point, it's much more likely both Malik and Billy leave than either stay. I think we end up with one scholarship open come spring. In which case, you may see this guy get an offer: https://247sports.com/Player/Ochai-Agbaji-46042163 ↗

I'd look for him to rise up the rankings this spring. Since summer, he's grown over an inch too to nearly 6'6. He's tearing it up in HS ball right now: averaging 26/9 on almost 60% shooting. Good FT shooter too at nearly 80%. Mid 30's from 3 too. I don't live around LFK anymore so I haven't had the chance to see him, but Norm was over in KC to see him a week or so ago.

I think UK is out. I think Clemson, SC, and UNC are the three left.

Are we done recruiting? • Jan 17, 2018 06:41 AM

@JayHawkFanToo I’m sure he is. Otherwise he wouldn’t have traveled to Morgantown.

Immediate Transfer Eligibility On The Horizon? • Jan 15, 2018 07:11 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I never claimed either of those things. I was just throwing out something ridiculous about the current system. How fair is it if a kid did everything right, but just gets recruited over and forced out, only to have to sit a year? And he’s penalized again if he graduates on time because while he can graduate transfer, he can’t get a scholarship for his last year.

Since when is having to sit for a year not a penalty? If it wasn’t, the NCAA wouldn’t say it reduces transfers. A policy to discourage behavior is by definition a penalty.

Immediate Transfer Eligibility On The Horizon? • Jan 15, 2018 06:05 PM

@HighEliteMajor my own personal politics have nothing to do with my opinion on this. I’m actually more libertarian than anything, mostly from all he time I’ve spent in government and how it’s made me acutely aware of its shortcomings.
I just think if a coach can cut a player (scholarships don’t have to be renewed) then the player should be able to transfer without penalty. Like I said earlier, I’m on scholarship right now and paid a stipend. I can leave at semester and start working right away without restriction. What makes a student-athlete different than any graduate student re: finances?

Recruiting Thread • Jan 15, 2018 05:43 PM

@BeddieKU23 I think we got two better fits. Moses doesn’t have the kind of competitive fire you want in an elite prospect. He’s got all the ability in he world but wants to be a wing. I’ve never been a huge fan of his tbh.

Immediate Transfer Eligibility On The Horizon? • Jan 15, 2018 04:31 AM

@mayjay ah I see what you’re saying. I’m good with it. Not like the AD’s can’t afford it. It won’t tie up a basketball scholarship, it’s just a method of letting the kid finish school. It happens when guys get hurt already.

Immediate Transfer Eligibility On The Horizon? • Jan 15, 2018 03:46 AM

@mayjay I read it as the student would just be able to finish his/her master’s on scholarship, but not be eligible for competition. Being able to play as long as a student is enrolled and making progress opens an entire new can of worms.

But I actually really like this idea. Coaches move around. AD’s move around. Why can’t athletes? I could transfer at semester and be funded and work at a new school. Especially since there’s an academic requirement involved. I don’t know if Moore and the Lawsons had the GPA’s, but that would be nice.

Recruiting Thread • Jan 15, 2018 03:04 AM

@BShark right? They probably won’t offer unless Richards and Washington leave. So we’ll see.

@JayHawkFanToo It certainly worked for Auburn and Cam Newton.

Self to see Langford tomorrow.

Hmmm wondering • Jan 07, 2018 10:01 PM

I get that feeling too. Sometime this week (hopefully tomorrow) KU will drop a release saying they’re both good to go. Self said Billy would need about a week to get integrated. Perfect timing for going to Morgantown.

Is De Sousa cleared to play TCU? • Jan 07, 2018 05:59 AM

Self said postgame he expects to hear on both this week.

Recruiting Thread • Jan 05, 2018 05:59 PM

@BeddieKU23 I don’t see Vick going before pick 40 this year. It’s a really strong draft. The 2019 draft is a lot weaker since the 2018 class is much weaker. As far as leadership, it’s going to be a little lacking next season no matter what. Langford would just be another guy. He’s an introverted, quiet kid.

Doke isn’t even on draft boards yet. Not sure he does anything but the D League if he leaves.

Recruiting Thread • Jan 05, 2018 05:02 PM

I think Vick is back. Just don’t see him as a first rounder right now, but will be the go to guy on the perimeter as a senior. Also keep in mind he’s not an older guy, he’s not even 21 yet. Not like he’ll be a 24 year old rookie if he stays all 4 years. Same with Doke. He just turned 18 this fall. No rush to bolt now when he’s got very obvious weaknesses that will only get more exposed in the NBA (e.g. rebounding, shot blocking, shooting).

For my money, I’d rather take a transfer this offseason that an unknown. We don’t need anymore depth next season, and some experience would be nice in 19-20. Assuming a worthy candidate is on the market, of course.

Comparing Cunliffe's stats Tuesday • Jan 04, 2018 09:54 PM

Sam’s issue is he’s not a great ball handler, so is limited to playing the 3 right now. I wouldn’t hate playing Vick at the 2 and Cunliffe at the 3 for stretches. Same with Garrett. He can play the 2 in stretches.
