I just think he’s a crappy writer who’s long past his prime. I like Tait and Bedore a lot better. I know I’m in the minority, but not a fan of Newell either. Sometimes he comes off as thinking he knows the game better than anyone else, and doesn’t always use analytics correctly.

Recruiting Thread • Dec 29, 2017 10:21 PM

@BShark I could see that! I think KU, UNC, and UK are the best teams going into next season. Watch out for Oregon too.

Recruiting Thread • Dec 29, 2017 10:00 PM

@BeddieKU23 UNC would be loaded with Zion. Maye, Johnson, Woods, and a few others return. Then add Zion, Little, and Coby White. Ole Roy has something special there.

Recruiting Thread • Dec 29, 2017 09:43 PM

Zion deciding probably by the end of January. Clemson I guess? I could see him going there or UNC. Not sure we’re really in it.

When the eff are we getting Billy?!?! • Dec 29, 2017 09:09 PM

@HawkChamp for sure. I just think Udoka is a different kind of guy. He is still just 18, so no rush. He’d be the same age as most OAD type guys as a junior.

Is this assuming Doke is back? I'd definitely rather have Doke back than Billy just from a parts/roster construction perspective.

Yes. Doke has a ton left to work on from a NBA perspective. Can’t see him leaving yet.

@drgnslayr I’d be stunned if Malik was back. He’s just ready for a paycheck, whether it’s in the D League or overseas. I’d love if he were back though. Takes some pressure of the freshmen to dominate the ball right away. Could easily start all 3 of Newman, Dotson, and Grimes. Assuming Vick leaves of course. I think it’s much, much more likely we have Vick than Newman.

Recruiting Thread • Dec 28, 2017 09:35 PM

@Jayballer54 he’ll be back unless he has a first round grade. Which he doesn’t have yet. That could change. If he does, I think we land Langford.

hmmmm, ok, so I was thinking we initially was giving out 4 for 2018, so let's see before De Sousa re-classified we had one left for 2017 right? -So he took that which filled us for this yr.

We was losing Devonte - -Svi - for 2018 as Seniors - then going off the assumption Vick was gone - -& Billy probably gone right? - -that would give 4 for 18 - -and if Malik that would be 5, - -so we used Grimes - -Dotson - - & McCormack so that should leave us 2 right? - -cause with De Sousa re-classifying - he counts against 17 -not 18 right? - -where am I off? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

We’re now full for 2017-18 since Silvio is a 2017 recruit. Assuming 4 leave (Devonte, Svi, Billy, Malik), and we have 3 signed, there’s one left for 18-19.

@JayHawkFanToo we do have one more scholarship for 18-19... but Billy isn’t going to use it. No way he comes back and competes with Dedric and Silvio. Malik is more likely.

As an aside, pretty sure we could’ve gotten Robinson eligible based on the Braxton Beverly case. What a difference he would’ve made.

I was messing around with numbers this morning, and came up with what I think is the most likely scenario for the next two seasons. !alt text ↗

When the eff are we getting Billy?!?! • Dec 28, 2017 07:41 PM

If the staff thought he wasn’t, and he didn’t think he was going to play, I don’t think he’d still be at KU. At that point, might as well pull a Mitchell Robinson and just go train full-time instead of going to class and all that.

When the eff are we getting Billy?!?! • Dec 28, 2017 07:22 PM

It’s in the NCAA’s hands now. So who knows. I still think Billy plays for KU, just a matter of when. I think sooner rather than later.

None of the 2018 commits (and obviously not Silvio) or 2019 targets have eligibility issues. Billy was always a question mark due to his record of bouncing around, especially his time at Prime Prep/API. Missing on Ayton caused a ton of ripples in 17. Billy is at USC if we land Ayton.

Recruiting Thread • Dec 16, 2017 03:08 AM

Wiseman is my #1 in 2019, and I’m not sure it’s that close. If he has to go to college, he’s going to Kentucky. We’ll still have Silvio, Dave, and probably JRE. Really good chance at Lawson too. I bet we make Wiseman’s final 5, maybe even 3, but I’d be stunned if he came to KU.

Source: one who would know. We’re all in the dark as far as timetable though. The NCAA does like to take its sweet time.

Langford • Dec 14, 2017 02:49 AM

The way Vick is playing, I wouldn’t expect him back. He’ll at least declare.

Newman is a weird case. We have room for him next season if he wants to come back. Could easily play Dotson/Newman/Grimes in the backcourt. But I’d be very surprised if he came back. Not sure what he can do, other than convince NBA teams he can run the point.

Billy , Silvio , Sam • Dec 14, 2017 02:45 AM

Here’s what I 100% know on Billy. It’s now out of KU’s hands. They presented their findings (of which I’m not privy to) to the NCAA, who’s now reviewing them. KU is just waiting on the green light. Could be tomorrow, could be never. We just don’t know.

Games Tonight (Dec 5) • Dec 06, 2017 02:39 AM

I hate Ayton so much. The dude is a total freak show and would make KU a title team this year. Not sure anyone else is close.

Recruiting Thread • Dec 06, 2017 02:32 AM

@BShark I could see him bolting for the NBA then. I still think he gives it one more shot, he's just waiting for the right opportunity. Not saying KU would lose JRE, but it would be tougher to hang onto him.

RJ Hampton is an exciting player and I hope he ends up at KU. I think he makes more sense in the 2020 class though.

Overall very solid analysis. I think a class of Jacobs, Harvey, JRE, Lawson makes the most sense. Add another player for depth if needed depending on the scholarship situation.

I agree. I'm also not convinced he plays a minute in college. OAD may be toast for the class of 19, in which case, A LOT of guys that were KU locks may look elsewhere. You'll have Dook and UK calling up Lawson and JRE since the top 10 guys will be off to the NBA. It also could impact next year's guys on whether they're OAD or not. Do you go in the 19 draft where you also have to compete with the top HS guys in that class, or wait?

I would say out of all of these guys, Vick plays 12 years, Devonte plays 9, Preston plays 7, Doke plays 4, Svi and Newman go overseas.

Vick has zero natural ball skills and a so so shot. He is a slasher period. To excel at that role in NBA to play 12 years he'd need to be around 6'7.

Devonte struggles against length(Oregon) and when his wide open or chucks from outside are not falling he cant create in the half court for himself. If he had ability to play 9 years in the NBA he would already be gone.

Svi is not fast enough and has really short arms. Though his age may get him some looks.

I like these guys as college players, I just don't see their skills translating to NBA.

I disagree on a couple points. Vick can be a lights out shooter. He's a career 40% 3 point shooter and almost 80% FT shooter. That's a heck of a lot better than so-so. He's shooting like 55% from 3 this season. He's got some work above the neck to be a great defender, but has all the physical tools to be a very good perimeter defender in the NBA. I think he ends up coming back to KU, since he's a borderline first rounder.

I think Devonte can be a plus backup in the NBA for a decade. The dude is just a good basketball player. He's got solid size and length for a pro PG, plus is a better distributor and shooter than Mario ever was. I could see him going anywhere from 25-35 in the draft. I actually agree with you on Svi. I just don't see it for him in the NBA. Not sure he's athletic enough to be a 2, but also don't think he's big enough to be a 3. I can see him having a very long and lucrative career overseas though.

It's going to be tough to get Stanley out of LA, especially with the run USC has been on (probably not all above board.) I think for 19 we take four or five guys, since we'll need to replace Grimes, Vick/Langford, Dedric, and probably Udoka. Outside chance Dotson is a OAD too. So far, it looks like Zach Harvey (Topeka Hayden product) really likes KU. A good friend of mine who coaches in Hayden's league says he has a ways to go to put it all together, but he has a chance to be an absolute stud. Zach already plays a lot like a PG, but needs to become a better all-around player, especially as a shooter. Stanley may be an option, as well as RJ Hampton (5* 6-4 PG from Texas). He's 2020 now, but probably could reclassify if he keeps his nose to the grindstone academically. A lot of folks forget, but we also have Markese Jacobs committed. I think he also has a ways to go to become a true PG, but that's not unusual for a HS junior.

As far as bigs, Chandler Lawson and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl are really the only two names to keep an eye on. I'm sure the staff would love a Matt Hurt, but they won't tell Lawson or JRE no. Each of those guys could pop pretty early for KU. You know KJ and Dedric will keep recruiting little bro if things go well for them here.

Marcus Garrett will have the wing spot on lockdown for the next 3 years (like he does the rest of the Big 12) so don't look for a ton of action at the wing. Along with Stanley, I know KU likes Malik Hall out of Sunrise in Wichita and Samuell Williamson from TX for depth. Numbers will dictate whether KU takes either of them. 2019 is kind of a luxury class. The starters will be pretty much set (Dotson, Moore, Garrett, Silvio, McCormack) but we can upgrade at the 2 and 5. Wouldn't be surprised if we ended up with something like Dotson, Harvey, Garrett, JRE, De Sousa. That's another potential title team.

Sosinki Thread V2 • Dec 05, 2017 02:35 AM

As an aside, how great would it have been to get Mitchell Robinson? He had a decent chance at getting eligible after Braxton Beverly.

Does this take up a scholarship? I always figured it wouldn't because he already has one for the FB team but when you think about it, that doesn't cover all of the expenses (hotels, flights, etc.) that he will now be getting with the team. I never really knew to what degree a walk-on has to pay their way.

No. He’s a walk-on for football, so won’t take up a scholarship.

Sosinki Thread V2 • Dec 05, 2017 12:01 AM

I don’t think it has anything to do with Billy or Silvio. Might as well add another body until they’re eligible. No risk, decent reward. He would’ve been perfect against Cuse. Clay ended up with 3 fouls in the first half. Just send this kid in to take up space.

DeSousa • Dec 04, 2017 05:03 AM

@drgnslayr KU takes both. They’d admit De Sousa in a heartbeat if he was eligible, regardless of KU’s written requirements. I believe the NCAA’s are higher.

DeSousa • Dec 03, 2017 02:52 PM

@Bwag both have institution codes you can put down when you sign up for the test where they’ll get the score when the student does.

DeSousa • Dec 03, 2017 05:33 AM

Those are the only 2 the NCAA accepts. It’s usually a couple weeks last I knew. But I haven’t brushed up in quite awhile. It may be faster now.

DeSousa • Dec 03, 2017 04:51 AM

It’s either the SAT or ACT. Have to have one, coupled with your GPA, to be a full qualifier to play NCAA sports.

Alley Oops, Dg, Malik and Refs • Dec 03, 2017 03:58 AM

I think Malik just doesn’t have a role yet. He’s not going to be a go to scorer. He’s probably our 5th best offensive player right now. Maybe he needs to work on PG skills and become more of a facilitator, even though it’s really not his game.

Billy • Dec 02, 2017 09:57 PM

If you believe some posters on here, she's in town to pack up Billy and bring the FBI to the AD's office to shut down the department. It'll all be fine guys.

Billy • Dec 02, 2017 08:02 PM

Don’t read much into Billy’s mom coming. The guys barely get any time to get home during the holidays so she probably just wanted to see him since he’s going through a rough time.

Billy • Nov 27, 2017 04:42 PM

CJ Giles walking out on child support and beating up his GF certainly qualifies.

Same could be said for when we got Malik. Billy is a good kid, he's just made a few stupid choices. If for whatever reason he has a change of heart and wants to come back to KU, then you take him without a second thought. Not like he's out there breaking the law like a CJ Giles. He just was driving a car he shouldn't. Comes from a good family too. Maybe the NBA taking a pass on him is the wakeup he needs.

Billy is gone, almost no matter what. I think he'd rather play in the G League than compete with the likes of Dedric and Udoka, not to mention Silvio, for PT. Which is kind of a shame. He could be an absolute monster with a year's time under Self and co. I don't see how he gets picked anywhere close to the first round unless he just blows up.

Billy • Nov 27, 2017 04:18 PM

Yep. Seems like SOP from the NCAA these days.

Billy • Nov 27, 2017 04:11 PM

I'm a little less bullish than @BShark on this one. I think he plays before the first of the year, but it may not be imminent.

KU Commits Stats, Tweets, Highlights Etc... • Nov 27, 2017 04:09 PM

He's a true combo, but I think his PG skills are getting better. Wouldn't surprise me to see him on the ball mostly when Dotson is out, plus Moore is more of a scoring guard. Jacobs is going to be really good too. Already has a great first step and has a great motor. Just needs to develop as a PG and get a more consistent jumper.
