I don t know but I didn t care for the lettering on the unis.
It was good to see that when a team is tall enough to take Perry out of the game, we have enough weapons to still beat a good team. Vandy is good, no question.
If Wayne plays even close to that most of the time.....We are a NC contender.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Stop it. You re getting me all excited, :)
@wrwlumpy But of course I will,
@wrwlumpy and God help us if we lose a game this week......I don t think I will want to even look at the site if that happens.
@dylans That s what I was thinking......why couldn't t I have gone to school there?
@AsadZ Accountability is fine. But this year's recruiting class is not complete. Last year's was good with Bragg and Vick. We won another conference title last year. Maybe we will again this year. Maybe we will go to the final four this year. Or...maybe not on both.
Let's let it play out.
We were in the final four in 2012 and missed the last 3
I just don't think that is anywhere close to calling for a new coach.
@AsadZ We don't know what went on with Greene, so we can't really judge whether 6 games is fair or not.
What if Greene was screaming, threatening, throwing things, swearing at the coach? We don't know.
As others have pointed out, it must have been pretty bad for his parents to be involved.
You are entitled to your opinion (that's what this site is for) and I feel your pain on the early exits.....I do.
But, don't you think Self's track record, overall, is awfully good, to be wanting another coach?
At least see what this team does in the tournament?
@DoubleDD That's a fair point...why recruit 3 pt shooters if you are not going to use them. I would imagine, however, that Self explained to these guys that they would have to play D, etc, in order to earn playing time.
@DoubleDD you have a right to your opinion, but I think you are way over reacting.
Look at the track record.
I feel the pain on the early exits.
But geez, can you at least wait until we have a bad regular season, or another early exit, or something, before you start with that.?
Let's let this season play out.
If we had a better last ten minutes and beaten MSU would you feel the same way.?
@KansasComet The Beddie post at the top references the KUAD drug policy...would seem to tie in.
You are absolutely correct about top 50 prospects and the bench.
@HighEliteMajor I hope I am wrong, but this could very well be the beginning of the end for BG here. Whatever the reason (and the drug test thing would seem to make the most sense), it seems like in these situations (lack of playing time, suspensions) you often see a player depart. The timing would be bad for him, however.
I think you are right... a bad fit here..........whether we like or agree with it or not.
@Statmachine The quote from Bolden didn't sound that good for us.
@justanotherfan I agree. I think the fact that Self tends to bring freshmen along slowly is hurting us in this OAD era.
@Crimsonorblue22 Wow. I hadn't thought of that. That would really be unfair for him to have to stay and be all by himself.
Good points have been made. Self leaves himself open to second guessing on the line up when the guys that play don't get it done (Lucas, Traylor).
My biggest gripe is the wild shots off of penetration that Devonte (especially) and also Frank continued to put up. A lot of those had no chance.
And give Greene and Svi a chance to show their stuff a little more. Shave some minutes from Graham and Selden.
The criticism of Self is probably justified...some of the same things keep happening. That will continue to be the case.
I'll still take him.
But you have to sit back and take this for what it was.....an early season loss to a ranked opponent with a great coach and a very good player (maybe great...I don't know) that had a great night.
We didn't play well...Is that the first time that has happened? No, and it won't be the last.
It happens.
@HighEliteMajor I sure hope the two of you are right. I have been in the camp expecting a tight game. I guess it is out of respect for Izzo. Also Valentine and Forbes. Granted, his teams (usually) play better at tournament time then in the early season.
@Lulufulu This will only be the 2nd time we have played them in the Champions classic. They won last time and also beat us in the sweet 16 in 2009.
@jaybate-1.0 said:
Always good to see Texas lose, of course.
And Shaka taking an L to start with, well, it does not burnish his rep.
But in Maxwell's defense, Agent 99, he was opening up with a real team in Washington, rather than the University of Northern Colorado. Washington is probably decent this season under Lorenzo Romar, as it has been in recent years. Am I right to assume it was University of Washington up Seattle way, and not Washington University of St. Louis? :-)
Good points. I am curious because I have struggled with my opinion of Maxwell (love it) as a coach. He is also at a disadvantage because he doesn't t have a roster of guys he recruited. Do you think he will be able to adapt or can he only win with the havoc style of play? Which would mean he might struggle until he is able to recruit his type of player.?
Thoughts, JB.? Or anyone else.?
@jayballer54 I m worried about eligibility with him.
And then there's the usual concerns about the presumed OAD.
But those issues aren't going away.....
One thing that I think is hurting us in the backcourt recruiting is that we have a lot of guys coming back.
The front court recruiting is the frustrating part.....but we will have a lot of bodies back. The fact that everyone wants to come in and be assured of 30 min per game and then leave is what is hurting us......even in the front court.
@HighEliteMajor I hope you are right that Mickelson starts.....
But I will believe it when I see it. Self seems to prefer Traylor.
But of course what counts is who gets major minutes.....and I can see them both doing so.
@ParisHawk I think we'll see Mason and Graham play together more than half of the game if that is what is best for the team. Somewhere between 20 -28.depending on how tight the game is. You make a good point that at some level of minutes together they will wear down.
@Texas-Hawk-10 That was my first thought too.....worried that they are looking at more than just grades.
@HighEliteMajor I think he was definitely talking about Greene.
@JayHawkFanToo If Diallo had to sit out a year...don t you think he would be projected high enough that he would go to the league.?
@SoftballDad2011 Even though he said he was not.....think he may have been talking about Brannen
JR.
You make some valid points.
But people want to express their opinions.....it is part of being a fan.
While sometimes people may take their statements a little too far....I don t think I've seen anything that resembles cyber bullying.
@BeddieKU23 when I read that quote I immediately felt that wasn't good for us.
Where is there a greater opportunity to play right away? I would think MSU.
It seems I have heard similar statements before and they end up going to the team that is not as good....of course they expect to be part of the improvement of that team.
After reading that comment, I will be surprised if he announces for KU.
@HighEliteMajor I thought I had read that maybe Bolden wanted to play WITH Giles. I haven't analyzed Duke's roster (nor do I care to) to see if that would make sense or not. What makes sense to you or I could have no correlation to what one of these guys do.
@DoubleDD You make some good points. I would say that one issue he has had is trying to win championships with freshmen. Usually, not always, experience wins championships. Yes...Duke had several freshmen. But I would never try to compare Cal to K.
Points taken, though.
@DoubleDD I am in the camp that thinks he is at least a good coach. The one thing he does well is take talented guys and gets them to play hard...and play good defense. He also manages to keep the team focused and winning while managing the minutes of guys all expecting to play 35 minutes. That is not easy to manage. There are a lot of aspects to being a good coach. You can't just "roll the ball out and let them play".
If nothing else you have to give him credit for managing a business model that utilizes the OAD...and has been very successful............ all but the one year.
Mind you....I'm no fan of his........and I wouldn't want that model at KU....but I have to give him credit for what he does well.
@HighEliteMajor I agree with your posts that have always said...rankings matter. Yes...we need high ranked guys to achieve a NC...or even B12 Championships. Recruit too many 100 or 100 + guys and we will not be happy.
Traylor and Lucas are role players. Traylor was one that Self would have led us to believe had a higher ceiling than he achieved. I don't think he (or us) ever expected Lucas to be more than a role player. I know I didn't anyway.
Yes... there is room for Lightfoot, but we need one or two higher ranked guys to go along with him or this will not be a good recruiting year.
I think most of us are in agreement on that.
@HighEliteMajor Some of the guys you mentioned...Traylor, Lucas come to mind.....are good to have on the team. If a player doesn't play up to expectations....he can become a role player, or transfer.
My point was not that he would become a star.....but if Self feels that he has a chance to be a good player, or at least is good enough to offer a scholarship to...I trust he is doing the right thing.
I don't really know how good Lightfoot is. I trust Self. If he thinks he can play here....good enough for me.
@justanotherfan I have to agree with jayballer...I lived through some of those down years too.
My speculation is: Frank, Devonte, Wayne, Perry, then either Diallo or Hunter.
Svi and Greene (hopefully he's healthy) off the bench at the 2/3. Bragg and Traylor rotating in up front. That's 9....which is really too many based on Self's history. One or 2 of those guys won't get many minutes.
@HighEliteMajor I think there are plenty of examples (Selby,Cliff, yes, maybe even Oubre) where another coach could point to KU not being the best place for someone who believes they are a OAD.
One huge counter to that is Embiid.
If we are being totally honest..........couldn't we say that Self's system probably isn't the best for a OAD?
Now for development......especially big guys, we could argue it is one of the best places to go.
Which, I think, has been the backbone of many of your comments regarding OADs?
@JReyn Your are correct, sir. I believe that it is almost as easy to get a rifle or shotgun in Canada as it is in the US. But...handguns are much more difficult. You need to prove why you want / need one. My understanding is that handguns are difficult to legally obtain.
@HighEliteMajor Entirely possible. Alas, we will never know about that....or about similar questions in the future.
@Makeshift Without regard to position mine would be: Wilt, Danny, Clyde, Jo Jo, and Pierce.
I think yours is pretty good if you have to go position by position.
@HighEliteMajor I have always felt that when we have lost "those" games in the tournament, our players seem to played "tighter"....not to lose. Part of that comes with being the favorite....and the underdog plays with nothing to lose.
But do you think our team takes on the coaches "puckering" quality?
@jaybate-1.0 As you say....."Howling". Not knowing anything about Fancaster......I will put equal weight to the predictions in your post as I will to the one about Diallo.
@DanR I agree 100%. I don't think that the way things ended up for Alexander says anything about Howard's recruiting. We won a hotly contested recruiting battle.....as you say everyone wanted him.
Also, we will never know if we would be viewing Alexander's success differently if he would have been able to play at the end of the season.
@wrwlumpy Based on Self's comments, I expect to see a lot of : Frank, Devonte, Wayne, Perry and either Diallo (if eligible) or either Mickelson (more likely based on WUG) or Lucas.
@wrwlumpy I think we lose at ISU.....they still have a lot coming back and it is a tough place to play....really it is one of the toughest games on our schedule. WVU will be tough also...we generally get everyone's best effort.
I don't think we will be undefeated going into the UK game.
@globaljaybird Yes. Josh is from Michigan and played at a smaller school in Detroit his first 2 years. Led his team to one of the smaller classes state championship. I saw him play twice. It was like watching James Young play in high school...he was just quicker and faster than the other guys and could jump over them. Everyone that wanted to see him play again (like me) was really bummed when he transferred to the school in SF.
I haven't really heard that UM or MSU have really been much in the game with Josh.
@Kcmatt7 Would we get both Jackson and Ferguson? I would think getting one would cause the other to go elsewhere?
@Statmachine Josh is not Canadian. He grew up in Michigan. I wish he were if that would help us get him, though!
@JayHawkFanToo You may have more detail than I do...but I had always heard that the Askew thing was what we copped to...but there were other things they could have gone after us for....hence the seemingly harsh penalty for what would seem to be not that big of a deal.
