@dylans That is my fear. You see it in the tournament. One bad night from 3 dooms you. ISU has been an example (at least in some of their loses to us).
Hopefully our guards can penetrate enough so that on a bad shooting night, they create enough inside to offset the outside misses.
@jaybate-1.0 Now that's your best work!
@Second-Prize Even though it may end up that Diallo should come back it doesn't mean he will. He clearly intends to only spend one year here. Since the NBA drafts on potential he will leave if he is guaranteed to be a high pick.
Bragg....we'll see. He at least said before arriving that he intends to stay more than one. Same deal with him though if he is projected to go high. Regardless of how much he would improve by staying another year.
But if they both come back, the chances of getting either Bolden or Allen decrease.
Funny quote from Hayes....something like...he's an old guy and all of that yelling and screaming wears you out.
Maybe that's why I'm so tired........;)
@BeddieKU23 I usually figure that when the other competitors for the league title play, it is better for the home team to win. Otherwise....the road winner is one up on us. So.....I would hope that OU wins.
@VailHawk Don't get HEM started! (Very funny, though!)
@jaybate-1.0 In light of the upcoming weekend.....Howling, me also.
@benshawks08 I'm going to guess Hunter starts, but Diallo gets significant minutes. Probably his turn to come off the bench first.....but geez Bragg deserves mins. too.....that's why HCBS gets the big bucks.
@HighEliteMajor Excellent!
@jaybate-1.0 You beat me to it. I was going to say 1 month,....I like your line better.
@DCHawker I would guess 2 reasons.....Bolden....is Diallo going? Is Bragg going? Jackson...Is Selden or Svi going?
The other reason......HCBSs history of bringing freshmen along slowly. They are either hesitant , or waiting to see what he does with Diallo and Bragg,.... or both.
@jayballer54 Bolden, like the top recruits sometimes do, is waiting to see who leaves early so .he can better gauge his competition for playing time next year. Jackson, also.
@DoubleDD Coming back to earth is not the same as expecting him to miss. See HEM's comments above....that's more of what I was thinking.
@DoubleDD Because 60% from 3 for a season is an unrealistic expectation.
I DVRd since the 11:30 EST start time was too late for me. Watched it this morning. Even though I new they would win, when they were down 13-9 in the last set, I couldn't see how it would be possible..
Great comeback!
Rock Chalk!
@HighEliteMajor And I am sold on what you and others have been sayiing....Mick is the man in the middle. Sub in the 2 freshmen, 10-15 mins. each depending on how the flow of the game goes.
Svi and Greene maybe 10 mins. each in the backcourt, again depending on how the game flows.
For the most part....that's it. Fouls and (hopefully not) injuries aside.
Halftime: OSU just wants it more. They have gotten to all of the loose balls. Missed FTs are killing us....again. Obviously, Trinkle is killing us also.
2nd half: play the guys that hustle the most.
@AsadZ While a third, good point guard would be great, very few teams could say they have that.
If one of them is injured, clearly it would hurt. But we would be OK. Vick would get some PT in that case. But I don't expect Self to play him much this year in tight games. Maybe a little the remainder of December....but once the conference season starts....he won't play much. Not Self's M.O.
@jayballer54 Pretty wild.. I just got home, was watching a little of that game and just thought the same thing.
If they can't draw a full house (or close) for a reasonably good game, then OU doesn't deserve a good team.
Goes to show you that there is no place like the Phog.....thanks to the fans.
@Crimsonorblue22 Thanks for posting. Court storming has to end. Period. There is no reason to allow it.
The word here in Michigan is that is mother was the influencing factor behind him going to Prolific Prep in Calif. One would guess that could give MSU an edge. But who knows. She did play ball in Kansas, per the recent article. He does know the MSU commits.(certainly Winston and Bridges).
@RockChalkinTexas Maybe a regular parent would have been ignored....who knows if we weren't there. But....I almost can't go to high school games any more as I have to listen to parents yelling and screaming about the officiating. It's ridiculous. It's a high school game. The refs are getting paid, what, $50 for the game? I want to tell people that if they know so much more then they should sign up to officiate the games. Without the refs we would have no high school sports...Is that what they want?
This really hits a nerve with me.
@nuleafjhawk I think your expectations just became predictions....we'll put you down for the championship game of the NCAA tourney. :)
@jayballer54 I will say 26-5 and we win #12 with 4 losses. Win the Big 12 tourney (we're due), so 29-5 going into the NCAA. Making the final four and losing in the semis (It's hard for me to predict that we don't make it to the final four and equally hard to predict a NC). Cause of loss: cold shooting (and we'll hear more fool's gold comments).
Hasn't Gathers played well against us? (At least one game as I recall)
@BeddieKU23 Well, I think Self would say that Lucas brings more sound fundamentals (certainly more than Diallo), better defense and better rebounding position. Bragg and Diallo will make more mistakes than Traylor and Lucas.
The big question is......when will those mistakes decrease enough such that their obvious talent makes them the choice over the more experienced guys? Obviously most people on this site think it is now. Self thinks they need more time.
It is a puzzle and it will be interesting to see how it fits together.Heck, we sat out 2 guys and still had a hard time finding playing time for everyone.
@KUSTEVE We did look good. But, we should have...we were bigger (on the wings) and more athletic than they were.
If we can't score inside as much, it will be interesting to see how we do in a relative shootout with the likes of OU, ISU, WVU (when they're hot).
@HighEliteMajor I love Diallo's upside. But, man, he was sloppy. 4 TOs as a big man in 18 mins. Hel'll improve, no question. But I do understand, in a tight game, why he wouldn't get as many minutes at this point.
You have said many times....Greene is a deadly weapon.
@benshawks08 Well put. I have always thought that the items you mention ("good passes that lead to missed shots", etc.) are the ones that Self evaluates that most of us don't see (or only see part of the time). Or if we see them....we don't put as much value on these little things as coaches do. Hence his comments about Lucas in the last game.
@jayballer54 It is early for sure to predict that. But, if he progresses at a reasonable pace but is still somewhat raw, I don't think that matters. The NBA drafts on potential. If I had to make the call right now...he's gone after this year.
@BeddieKU23 That would be my speculation also.....Lucas starts and Mickelson gets some PT. Whether we agree with his assessment of Lucas or not (and I can't believe that I'm even talking about us agreeing or not with the assessment of a coach with his winning percentage) .... based on Self's comments on Lucas...there is a very good rationale to expect him to start.
@justanotherfan I think you are getting to the crux of the matter. I don't think Self believes that not playing the young guys a lot early in the season if they aren't the best ones to put out there will cost him a game in March. His actions over the years seem to indicate that. Wiggins might have been the exception. Ourbre hardly played at first and ended up being a 30 min. guy. He brought Cliff along slow, but I contend that if he hadn't been inelgible {or held out, whichever} he would have been a major factor in the tourney.
I think that Self believes the 2 young guys will be a major factor as the season progresses and I don't think that he believes only playing them 7 mins. in the Harvard game will impede that progress.
And he might be right.
As others have said....his job is to win and in a close game....he puts the guys out there that he thinks give us the best chance to do that.
He gets paid a lot of money to make these decisions....and others have pointed out he's done a pretty good job of that.
Now, you could argue that everything I have said is contradicted by the recent tourney failures.
@benshawks08 I think what that says is everyone is trying to find themselves right now. Kentucky looks good, then looks really bad vs. UCLA. NC loses (although without their PG). Gonzaga lost to Arizona, who hadn't looked that good. We look good in Maui, then not so good afterward. Our loss to MSU doesn't look so bad, though now.
I agree that 7 is probably about right, but with 1 loss to MSU....I can see the rationale for putting us at 2.
It's a crap shoot at this point.
@HighEliteMajor To your point, he could have put the young guys in after 5 mins it he 2nd half. Maybe they would have extended the lead instead of losing it? If not, he still would have had time to put the experienceD guys back in. We'll never know.
@HighEliteMajor I think he intended to play both the young guys more as evidenced in the first half.
But when they closed the gap and then ultimately made it a close game., he did what he has always done.....play the experienced guys.
You make valid points.......but he ain't t changing, my friend.
Guy on the Harvard bench is starting to irritate me after their 3s
We looked pretty good through the middle portion. Last 6-7 mins, not so much.
A lot of lineup combos. Svi played a lot. My first look at Diallo. Needs to work on finishing better.
@jaybate-1.0 Agreed. Without top talent he would be average at best.
@Lulufulu I would argue that there are a lot of things that make up coaching. Calipari has proven to be good at a couple of them. He has recruited good players. He has been able to get a group of talented guys play hard and play good defense. He has managed the playing time expectations of a roster full of guys that all think they should play 30 min. a game and all be OADs and won a lot of games. A lot of the guys have not played that much and have stayed more than one year (which was not their expectation) and he has apparently managed that reasonably well.
Those are not easy things to do. I do not think that just any coach could do all of that.
I don't think he is a great coach. But he has done some of the duties of a head basketball well enough to be very successful. He has managed the business model in the OAD era very well.
I agree with you for the most part on the teaching and development. The most important part of coaching? Sure. But there are other facets which he has mastered.
I don't care for him. But I feel like I have to give credit where credit is due...even begrudgingly.
@HighEliteMajor So what are you going to have? A bull or a heifer? (Cause he ain't starting now...we know HCBS)
@HighEliteMajor I'm not as sure about Izzo. Davis comes off the bench and he is pretty talented and touted.
@JRyman As it relates to Perry, I think he was quoted at some point as saying that as a youngster he used to get too emotional...this is his way of keeping that in check.
As it relates to all of them....People can't try to be something they are not.
Perry plays pretty well with that demeanor.....I'll take it.
@Crimsonorblue22 I saw a framed copy of this in a shop on Mass. street on my last trip in to Lawrence and forked over the $$ so I could hang it up at home. Part of our heritage....and it looks cool in my home.
Wilt. No question. He's a legend. He's ours. He's part of our great history.
Naismith, Allen, Wilt. They are part of what makes us who we are.
I would take the final four. No question. I would not necessarily trade multiple, past conference championships as a lot of people apparently would. Bur we need another final four or two and at some point another NC to go with all of those conferences championships.
@KansasComet I think you are describing what SHOULD happen.
History would suggest that Brafgg and Diallo will not get as many minutes as we think they should. I don t think there will be room for Vick to get many minutes.
I hope you are right about the frontline, though.
@DCHawker Agree. I couldn't t believe when I saw that Selden played all 40 mins. Surely he could get the guys a little more rest.
@HighEliteMajor But didn t our guards do a much better job of getting into the lane than they did vs. Stanford?
Not only made our 3 pt shots more open but also opened up other shots as well?
I thought Stallings comments were telling.....basically the key to the game was penetration by Mason and Graham. Yes Wayne played great, but the penetration created open looks for Wayne and others.
Of course you have to hit the open looks ....which we did.
HEM I can t wait to hear your comments,
Traylor played more minutes than Perry.
