@JayHawkFanToo I am expecting a marked improvement as well. Lucas did not all of a sudden become a bad rebounder.
@JayHawkFanToo thank goodness! Got tired of mushburger
@Crimsonorblue22 hmm, good question
@Crimsonorblue22 what?
@ralster I was thinking the same thing! Do they have a different cheer squad for every sport? lol
After a "spirited practice" yesterday, hopefully the guys will have a little fire in their pants to rebound and play with more focus. This is the last tuneup before a super tough stretch, and their play needs to reflect this - they have the personnel and the coaching to win these two games and at the very least be 1 - 1 in this stretch (though we all would love to beat media slobber fest Consonants). Unfortunately, I will be at a dress rehearsal, so I will be relying on you guys to keep me updated on the game Sunday.
@drgnslayr I personally would prefer a more permanent four guard lineup - it worked for UConn twice and Nova last year.
Bill said today in a press conference that guys need to be more aggressive rebounding. The other night, Washburn was definitely the aggressor and looked a lot faster because of it. Its amazing how much better we look when the guys play with a lot of energy and concentration.
I hope we run some pick and roll plays with Carlton like we did with Perry. Not really surprised we didn't see it Tuesday - Bill also said today that they really didn't run any offense. That will definitely keep Indiana and Duke guessing.
1:08:23 mark he is not under the basket on the seal off but does not box out correctly and missed the rebound - Self yanks him right after that.
Another instance of terrible rebounding positioning at the 41:40 mark. A shot goes up and Bragg runs right under the rim and the ball goes off his fingertips - a missed opportunity and Josh gets a foul because of it. So far, this has everything to do with strategy and not strength.
@Makeshift A bit of it is bad positioning. About the 38 minute mark (I'm rewatching it on ESPN3), Bragg allows the offensive rebound because he is unexplainably floating around while his man gets between him and the basket, causing the offensive rebound opportunity. Moments that lack mental concentration are the most frustrating.
@drgnslayr I also think that goes back to what Josh said about having to get used to not playing against each other.
On Carlton and Landon, they did not all of a sudden become terrible - something else was clearly going on. Stagnation could indeed be the reason.
@jaybate-1.0 that would explain a few things, including why Self did not sound as concerned as I thought he would be in the post game press conference.
@JayHawkFanToo I should clarify that. He was average to above average. Not bad by any means but not something you would write home about.
@JayHawkFanToo Perry's absence does not explain lolly gagging down the floor and consistently giving up transition points. Perry's absence does not affect throwing bad passes. Perry's absence also does not affect standing around waiting for rebounds - IIRC, Perry was not a good rebounder. We will be fine without him - just need to do the fundamentals before anything else.
Yes, his efficiency will be missed, but we have a lot of other weapons that can score too - they just need to get their heads in the game.
@DanR I disagree. Did we really even run any offense? Not much. It was mostly dribble drive or force feed it into the post.
@drgnslayr your response as to why that happened is reasonable, but still hard to fathom that these guys didn't (supposedly) already know a thing or two about even the basics of rebounding. I hope to see better focus in general going forward - not getting outhustled, sprinting back on defense to avoid giving up layups and not being so careless with the bad passes. None of this has to do with talent, but rather with just deciding to do it. None of our guys are incapable of doing the things I listed.
@stoptheflop yeah that was unnecessary. He looks like he has the Perry Ellis senior urgency. Hopefully that will be contagious because no one else has it
The surprising thing is this stuff went on all game with no adjustments. Washburn dominated in transition and on the glass the whole 40 minutes and everybody but Frank seemed fine with it. I agree with other posters about the difference in physical size from practice to last night, but you have to adjust to the game and not just hoping refs are going to change.
It was a sloppy game. Other teams will be taking note of what Washburn did in transition. I mean really - there was no urgency in getting back and Washburn, an NAIA team, made them pay. Devonte looked like it was play time, and Carlton+Landon were uncharacteristic also.
I think they thought it would be an easy, no effort blowout. I hope their mindset changes real soon. They are a lot better than they showed last night
@approxinfinity Lagerald had a bit of bad d also. Shoot, I think most everybody played bad d tonight
@kjayhawks absolutely not a good basketball player? Did you watch the second half?
@kjayhawks I'm not so sure about that. Josh looked much more comfortable 2nd half. Has to play smarter with his passing
maybe they were looking ahead to Indiana and Duke?
think about this - for as bad as it was, we still scored 92 points while missing roughly fifteen free throws, had nearly twenty five turnovers, gave twenty five transition points and who knows how many offensive rebounds. We should have scored 120+ and won by 40.
@kjayhawks I bet they're licking their chops thinking about our transition d and rebounding - rightfully so
@BShark I thought they were motivated after last year's disappointing ending? Bragg, Lucas and Devonte sure uninspiring tonight.
@BShark if Bragg and Lucas don't want to play, I'd take UA and Lightfoot right now. At least they are rebounding
@kjayhawks we do, but they forgot there was a game tonight
@BShark according to Piper a "good call"
I was expecting a lot more of the basics tonight - you know, rebounding, getting back in transition, low turnovers, stuff like that. Boy was I disappointed. Washburn aint a top 25 team folks
Lucas with one rebound. This is an effort and focus thing folks
@Crimsonorblue22 he looked better rebounding last year.
why can't we rebound?
@JayHawkFanToo much more comfortable now
@BShark presumably
@BeddieKU23 I agree. His head has not been in this game from the start.
@BeddieKU23 completely uninspired effort
@Bwag no
that was a bad call. Doke barely touched him
great move by svi. need more of that
@Crimsonorblue22 got the yank for poor play.
wow, we can't get back in transition and Washburn knows it
transition d again
Washburn 14 points off of KU turnovers
@approxinfinity Mario like
Graham has super fast hands. Play still very very sloppy
Frank looks like he is ready to be the senior leader. Good sign
@approxinfinity the problem is, the guards are not working hard and sealing off for rebounds. They have not given Self any reason to feel comfortable with it
@KUSTEVE only Frank and Svi showed up - wait till everybody else wakes up
@kjayhawks no you're fine man. Self will give 'em a butt chewing and they play more focused next half
