Some misc, possible concerns: • Jan 10, 2017 01:59 AM

This is not really new. Coach Self has always indicated that by Conference play time he likes to be down to 7 or 8 players taking the bulk of the minutes. He is not alone, I have heard Coach K and Jay Wrong among others say pretty much the same thing. The squid tried platooning and playing 10 players and did not work out well and indicated he will not do it again.

@Kcmatt7

Noel is not a bad player but his injury history makes him suspect. Ever since ol' man Oden, NBA teams are having second thoughts about bigs with health issues.

@Crimsonorblue22

Gotta admire a man with ambition...

@Crimsonorblue22

Do you really think Duke...or KU or UK or UNC or any other blue blood would consider someone with Capel's record? I certainly don't...but I don't do the hiring...:smiley:

Embiid talking playoffs • Jan 09, 2017 10:12 PM

@Kcmatt7

They have pretty much decided Noel is expendable and they can use him to trade for a veteran PG.

@Crimsonorblue22

@JayHawkFanToo I do.

Are you referring to Capel?

How about tomorrow? :smiley:

Some misc, possible concerns: • Jan 09, 2017 08:03 PM

If these players in peak physical force cannot play 30+ mpg during a 30+ game season, how are they going to service in the NBA where the regular season is 82 games long and each game is 48 minutes long?

Ah...yes, Jeff Capel. many think the next few games are an interview for the HC job at Duke when Coach rat face leaves; does anyone realistically believe that Capel has a chance? I personally don't.

@mayjay

Again, no worries, I am one step above door knob...and I predicted Trump's win...:smiley:

@mayjay

No worries, a door knob is more accurate than the election pollsters. :smiley:

Baylor #1 in AP poll • Jan 09, 2017 06:51 PM

@KUSTEVE

Baylor and KU are #1 and #2 in both polls. KSU is #25 in the AP poll and #27 in the USA Coaches poll.

Last season OU and KU were both #1 in each of the two polls; are we looking to a repeat of the KU-OU classic with Baylor replacing OU?

Embiid talking playoffs • Jan 09, 2017 06:11 PM

@approxinfinity

I love the optimism but...considering that close the the half way point of the season the Sixers have the 3rd worst record in the NBA, the chances of them making the playoff are not good. Is it possible? Yes. Is it probable? No.

@ParisHawk

As I understand, the conferences try to match up "like" teams, this is why KU plays teams like UK and Florida. Also, since the the SEC has more teams they tend to drop the bottom ones and this is why MU did not play last season and it is not playing this year either. The odds that KU will drop to the bottom of the conference or that MU will rise to to top of the SEC are...shall we say...not good, so the chances of having KU play MU in the Big12-SEC Challenge are minuscule

@ralster

Let's not forget that in their selfish haste to join the SEC, the slavers placed the Conference, and by extension KU, in serious jeopardy.

I like Bob Knight. I always enjoyed hearing the perspective of a HOF coach and I always felt like I learned something new from just listening to him.

@drgnslayr

I understand tha MU went from 6 points up to 8 points down at the start of the second half without a single time out called...that is just poor coaching. I just don't see any scenario where Kim Anderson keeps his job.

@Texas-Hawk-10

I agree. I have posted the exact thing before.

Fran Makes Monumental Flub Up.... • Jan 08, 2017 08:48 PM

@mayjay

While Sutton was a very good coach, he also had big issues complying with rules. Rule violations at Kentucky during his watch brought the program within a whisker of the death penalty and he was forced to resign; he also left the OSU program under a black cloud. These are some of the reasons that have made it difficult for him to be nominated so far and perhaps he never will be...voters seem to frown upon law breakers, otherwise Charlie Hussle would be in the Baseball HOF.

Welcome Back Devonte • Jan 08, 2017 08:33 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Only if he continues to improve and brings his game to the level of late last season. As of now, he is not getting drafted.

@tis4tim

OU had a very bad first half but a much better second half. They were down only 6 points with 9 minutes left and 7 with 3 minutes left but could not get any closer. They outscored KSU by 5 in the second half. OU is a young, inexperienced team.

Fran Makes Monumental Flub Up.... • Jan 08, 2017 07:54 PM

@drgnslayr

It remind me of the time they had a poll on the top college basketball venues among 20-30 basketball writers and analysts and every single one had AFH in the top 2 or 3 except for one that did not list AFH; any guesses who?...MU alumnus Pat Forde.

Grayson, you decide • Jan 08, 2017 07:48 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Obviously Duke will not do anything until Coach K surgery to get a back bone is complete. Apparently the Conference has passed on it as well so it's time for the NCAA to earn its keep and do something...or so common sense would dictate...

Recruit visiting • Jan 08, 2017 07:43 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

I am not an expert on NCAA rules but I would think that 12 is not the limit of official visits anymore; KU brings at least that many for Late Night alone and lots of others throughout the season. This is by no means factual but just anecdotal observation.

Recruit visiting • Jan 08, 2017 07:30 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

I am curious where you got that information. I think the number of visits depends on the program's budget" target="_blank" rel="noopener">http://www.ncsasports.org/blog/2012/10/11/official-visits-3/) ↗ but I could be wrong. Many students visit on their own and the visits are not counted as official.; this happens often with recruits that live close to a school and visit often, usually attending games.

Fran Makes Monumental Flub Up.... • Jan 08, 2017 07:21 PM

Fran has had Bromance with ISU in the last few years and has praised the program often almost implying that it is the Conference's flagship program...of course he conveniently forget those pesky 12 titles in a row that make him look not only silly but petty as well. He has also drooled over Hilton forgetting that AFH is the Cathedral of college basketball and let us not forget that he called the ISU fans less smug than KU fans...of course Mel Weatherwax disproves that claim as well.

Sam Cunliffe is a Jayhawk • Jan 07, 2017 11:12 PM

He was probably in a better position at the end of last season when his stock was high. Unless he improves dramatically in the reminder of the season, I just don't see him being drafted.

@mayjay

"The right to swing my arms in any direction ends where your nose begins. " Oliver Wendel Holmes.

Just because a minority is entitled to rights does not mean a majority should be deprived of its own rights in the process. The way the "bathroom" law is worded is an invitation to controversy and it goes against what most people want. I have yet have to find one person with young kids that agrees with it. Per the law, you and I who most likely think of ourselves as manly men, could walk into the women's restroom of an elementary school and as long as we indicate that internally we "identify" ourselves as women, we can get away with it...law of unintended consequences that was recently discussed by our local school district.

Last word on this subject on my part, lest risk being called intolerant. Back to KU basketball.

@BShark

Oak Hill has a good reputation so hopefully his work there will offset the previous stops.

Sam Cunliffe is a Jayhawk • Jan 07, 2017 09:56 PM

The article indicates that after he plays the second semester of next season he will have 2 years left...shouldn't it be 3 years?

@mayjay

Completely different issues. Segregation directly affected athletes competing in the Tournament, bathroom usage? Not so much...or at all.

COACH FIGHT! • Jan 07, 2017 08:52 PM

@Ralph

So...finally someone from Missouri showed some fight...now, if only the players tried that hard. ROTFL...🤗

@drgnslayr

Of course they can and they should. Do you think businesses are going to tell the NCAA...we will stop sponsorship unless you make a political stand? No way, too much money involved. In fact, it would give businesses political cover.

Maybe the NCAA should stick to sports and stay out of politics?

@jaybate-1.0

No, you got it wrong. Had the refs called a foul in mid court, Svi goes to the line line with a couple of seconds left and even if he makes on a free throw, KU wins. Had they called a blocking foul (which it clearly was) and disallowed the basket, Svi goes to the line with less than a second left and again, even if he makes one free throw KU wins. That is two calls that favored KSU. Yes, they did not call the travel but there was a 50-50 chance that he would not score and the game goes to overtime, so you can call it a wash. Had Svi's shot not gone in, there would have been at least two calls that favored KSU. All things considered, the refs let them play and KU came on top.

See? It's not that difficult.

Don't be so Defensive • Jan 07, 2017 07:59 AM

@ralster

I respectfully disagree. The military force was neither small nor ill equipped. The problem was the limitations imposed on them by politicians and lawyers.

Military people will tell you that their jobs is to inflict as many casualties and destroy as much enemy equipment as possible with as little loss on our side as possible. Unfortunately this no longer possible when politicians and lawyers are making combat decisions instead of the generals that were trained to make them.

The only groups that have little interference (because if their secrecy and sensitivity) are the Navy Seals and other Black Ops groups and see how successful they can be when allowed to operate as designed and without interference.

The Only Way To Travel... • Jan 07, 2017 07:21 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

You are correct in so far as there is no technical limit on the number of walkons a program can have but there is a practical limit and every player that is part of the program has a role on it, be that as a star player or a scout team or practice player. While a walk on might not get the full tuition cost, it costs the program a fair amount of money, including uniforms, use of facilities and trainers and travel expenses just to name a few and this is why most programs normally cap the total number of players at 15 or ocassionally 16; on ocassions they will even use student assistants rather than to take on more walkons. As far as I know, all players including walkons live in the basketball dorm and there is a limited number of slots available.

As far as I know, every walk on has to justify the invite and earn the slot, after all it is KU and not a mid major program; every walkon at KU would start for a smaller program. Teahan was the player of the year in Missouri and only could get to KU as a walk on. Being Fran Fraschilla's son does not entitle him to walk on at KU.

No big deal, we just agree to disagree

Don't be so Defensive • Jan 07, 2017 02:34 AM

Donald Rumsfeld famously said... you go to war with the army you have. At this point, KU's army seems better suited for offense than defense and with the bigs situation, Coach Self understands that offense will be key. Having said that, Coach Self has always put a premium on defense and there is no way that he abandons this philosophy. The team is capable of playing superior defense, remember the second half of the Davidson game? So, I believe that once Coach Self lays out the priorities, the team will get back to playing good defense and superior offense. I pity KSU, KU will be looking forward all season to silencing squeaky once and for all...in Manhattan.

Well latest NBA projections • Jan 07, 2017 02:14 AM

If Washington implodes and Romar is gone, that class could disintegrate and Michael Porter could become available and there is no way he goes to MU so KU could become an option. I know KU was not on his list but you never know. A transfer that can play without a wait could also be a possibility.

Fskc • Jan 07, 2017 12:46 AM

On a related note, 2 former KU football players, Aquib Talib and Chris Harris were named to the NFL Pro-Bowl...it would be nice if KU can get 2 players to the NBA All-Star...
