...what you said and also the fact that I know first hand not only how long it takes to get overseas transcripts sent to the institution requesting them, but how long it takes to evaluate them. Other countries grade differently and the courses do not necessarily have an US equivalent, so a lot of subjectivity and time is involved. I am sure there are not too many applicants from Mali.

I have to prepare legal document for and from other countries 4 times a year and sometimes one certified letter will take 5-6 week to get to a South American Country. Amazing but a certified letter to another country and sent from Olathe goes through 4 different cities before getting to New York from where it leaves the country; that portion alone takes 7-10 days...and you can track the slow-as-molasses progress via the internet, getting more frustrated every day. I can see how a certified letter from Mali could take several weeks to get here and if clarification is needed or the letter does not contain the required information and must be regenerated, I can imagine how the process can take several months.

@REHawk

I prefer to think that all applicant should be treated equally.

@drgnslayr

I would think that applications are processed in the order received and those with problems go to different pile where they await until the proper documentation is received. Let's not be too hasty and claim the delay is the Clearinghouse's fault; there is a good chance that, as I pointed out before, the issue is due to Diallo's overseas transcripts not being in order or properly certified.

@drgnslayr

Do you think the NCAA Clearing House is not doing a good job? I read somewhere that it processes over 100,000 applications every year and 99% of them go through without any problems. I would be inclined to think it is the students that fail to submit complete application packages that are fault rather than the Clearinghouse that is doing the job it was tasked to do.

Alleged Eligibility • Sep 23, 2015 03:47 AM

@drgnslayr

The community service was "in addition" to all the academic work required. Catholic schools, even at the parochial/elementary/middle school level, always have made it clear that part of the student curriculum includes contributing to society by doing community work. I believe it is a real good thing to get student to become contributing members of society from an early age; a much better option to be working in a soup kitchen than sitting in front of the TV playing Play Station or glued to their cell phone twitting...social work is better than social media.

Alleged Eligibility • Sep 22, 2015 10:26 PM

@drgnslayr

My daughter attended Bishop Miege HS, a Catholic school and she had to do a number of community service hours every single semester and it was a "school" requirement, like most every Catholic school has, for graduation; it was not a state requirement.

Of course lots of people die as a result of pot. Many people die every day from the effect of driving under the influence of pot; the deaths are classified as DUI and thus pot does not get named directly but it is the primary cause. A friend of mine died when his car was t-boned by a jerk driving high on pot, so yes, pot does contribute to many deaths.

@jaybate-1.0

I think you are missing the big picture. While KU's contract with Adidas is $6.4M the total AD budget for the school is $97.6M. The revenue from basketball is $18.2M and football $23.1M and $54.8M not specifically allocated to any sport and includes the conference contracts.

@jaybate-1.0

Not really. Look a the 2015 list of schools and how much they make f ↗rom their endorsements

Football schools:

  • University of Nebraska Big Ten Adidas $4,050,000
  • University of Oklahoma Big 12 Nike $3,390,000
  • Oklahoma State University Big 12 Nike $2,050,000
  • University of Missouri SEC Nike $2,250,000
  • University of Texas Big 12 Nike $4,130,000
  • Texas Tech University Big 12 Under Armour $2,450,000
  • University of Alabama SEC Nike $3,670,000
  • University of Michigan Big Ten Adidas $8,200,000
  • Michigan State University Big Ten Nike $1,600,000
  • Florida State University ACC Nike $4,200,000
  • University of Florida SEC Nike $3,355,000
  • The Ohio State University Big Ten Nike $4,264,014

Basketball Schools:
- University of Kansas Big 12 Adidas $6,475,000
- University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ACC Nike $3,550,000
- University of Louisville ACC Adidas $6,775,000
- University of Maryland ACC Under Armour $4,425,000
- University of Kentucky SEC Nike $3,525,000
- University of Connecticut American Athletic Nike $2,825,000
- University of Florida SEC Nike $3,355,000

It sure looks to me that schools with strong basketball programs do a lot better than schools with strong football programs. KU with a nearly non-existing football program makes it like a bandit...If football would be a big influence in endorsement contracts, then Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Alabama, all power-house football programs...to name a few, would have much bigger contract than KU with is puny football program...and yet they don't.

Of course football programs take the bulk of the money, after all they have well over 100 individuals in the program counting players, coaches and support personnel while the typical basketball program has maybe 20-25. Also, TV contracts and gate revenues are typically much higher for football than basketball.

Sad news • Sep 21, 2015 05:33 PM

@nuleafjhawk

Let me preface my comments by saying that I do not own guns and I have no plans to get guns of any sort.

Now, do you honestly think that if guns were illegal, banned or highly controlled, the thugs that did the shooting would have obeyed the law and not have had guns and the shooting prevented? I don't

Unfortunately, the great majority of people that should not have guns are already prevented from having gun under current laws...and yet they still have guns. The sad truth is that passing additional laws to take away/ban guns from the average Joe, will only take them away from law abiding people and outlaws and thugs will continue to get guns.

Like I said, I don't own guns but I have come to the realization that additional laws will not prevent people that should not have guns from having them.

@Texas-Hawk-10

Wow dude, CHILL!!!

My post was partly in jest and partly based on fact. You mentioned the New Rock Chalk Park and there is a lot more to that story that has been keep quiet and than some posters in this Forum are aware. There is a lot of controversy about why it was built at a location so far removed from Campus when space was available on the West Campus and right next door to the Main Campus? Do a search on the Lawrence Journal website and you will be seriously surprised by the shenanigans that went on; I know I was when another member brought it to my attention.

Raising money to fire Gill was not an issue or difficult to do since boosters and donors were happy to see Gill gone. Hiring Weiss seems to have been a big mistake.

Obviously, you don't live in the KC Metro area, if you would you would know that there is a huge number of KU fans that are extremely upset with the contract with TWC, KU got no money from TWC, let me repeat it... KU GOT NO MONEY FROM TWC, it got "programming in kind" that includes the lesser sports at KU, such the women's rowing team that have minuscule audiences and generate no money whatsoever and they only exist because of Title IX.

You know how bad the contract is? Only TWC and Comcast carry Metro Sports. all the other providers including ATT, Consolidated Communication/SureWest , Google Fiber which serve the majority of the Kansas side of the Metro Area do not carry Metro Sports. ESPN3 that carries the KU programming is blacked out for the entire State of Kansas and the KC Metro area, not only for selected KU men's basketball and football games but also for women's basketball and volleyball games.

From my home in Olathe, Kansas, I can watch every football and basketball game KSU and MU and even Kentucky play but I cannot do the same for KU games...I ask you...do you really think that this is a good contract? Do you believe that alienating the fan base in the KC Metro Area, the largest KU fan base in the country, and a lot of the state. is a good way to do business? I certainly don't

There are two sports that generate the bulk of revenues and support in Division I sports: football and men's basketball; without these two programs, none of the others exist. Why do you think is good policy to alienate the fans of the cash-cow programs to enhance the others? I don't have a problem supporting and enhancing the other programs but not a the expense of the ones that make the others possible.

Again, if you were in the KC Metro area you would not find many Zenger fans and most KU fans want him gone.; I know I do.

So, don't ask me to drop my criticism of Zenger and I will not ask that you quit defending him.

Chiefs Blow So Others Can Learn.... • Sep 18, 2015 07:20 PM

@HighEliteMajor

It really depend on how you see precedent. Charles had already fumbled on the the red zone before. so you say:

He has already gotten that out of his system and he will not do it again.

...or you say...

He is already fumbled once before so I better not try again.

Charles is known for fumbling so, if he is your best bet under those conditions, then no, I would not have called a play for him in our own red zone, I would call a play for someone less prone to fumbling or I would take the knee. Under the same conditions, most every other team would have taken the knee and taken their chances in overtime...most every analysis and commentary of the game I saw and read afterwards, pretty much said the same thing.

Now, if the Chiefs were behind and needed a field goal to tie or win the approach might be different, but all they had to do was hold on and go to overtime; they had outplayed Denver most of the night and had a decent shot to win it in OT. Taking a knee would have been, IMHO, the proper call.

"all-conditional recruit team" • Sep 18, 2015 05:46 PM

@jaybate-1.0

Other than those two, I cannot think of any other highly raked player that is still in limbo. Terrance Ferguson was cleared and signed with Alabama and Kobie Eubanks was found not eligible and will not be playing Division I basketball next year. I am sure there are more but none in the top 50 that I can think.

Chiefs Blow So Others Can Learn.... • Sep 18, 2015 05:32 PM

@drgnslayr

Why not just take a knee...like every other team would have done?

I guess the proverbial...snatching defeat from the jaws of victory...applies here. :(

@jaybate-1.0

I don't know. I thinks it is just a part of KSU alum Zenger grand plan to destroy KU sports. He started with football program, the women's basketball program is also getting worse, and now he is taking on the basketball program by partnering with TWC and depriving KU basketball fan all over of several games evry season. Luckily, he does not have the gravitas or the balls to take on Self directly as he would be run out of town on a rail

It must kill him to see the women's volleyball program doing well this year and that National Track championship must have given him fits for months.

Skal vs Cheick in eligibility • Sep 18, 2015 02:28 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Here Skal talks about waiting to be cleared ↗...

“I’ll be able to play right away,” Labissiere said to Tucker. “The NCAA is going to clear me and I’ll be able to play right away.”

"In December, Hamilton told Steve Jones of the Courier-Journal that the NCAA was indeed looking into matters with Labissiere."

“Oh, yeah, they have investigated,” Hamilton said of the NCAA. “Of course, they hear all the rumors – and that’s what they are, rumors – going out about me, and they have a right to do their job. Unfortunately, a lot of the stuff that went out about me, a lot of people don’t even know me. I don’t know how they got the information. But they’re doing their job, and we’re doing our job. We don’t have anything to hide.”

"While the NCAA has yet to officially say anything on Labissiere — or clear him at Kentucky— the Haitian big man saying that he’s going to get cleared is an interesting development. Sometimes, it’s difficult to take a kid’s word in this situation, but at this point, it’s really all we have to go by."

Here is a more recent story ↗(August)

"When and where we'll next get a glimpse of those strengths and weaknesses is another matter entirely. With roughly two months until Kentucky's season-opening game against Albany, the NCAA has still yet to rule on Labissiere's eligibility for the 2015-16 campaign."

Unless something happened in the last month, the NCAA has not cleared Labissiere to play.

Why are we even talking about Kentucky players anyway?

Skal vs Cheick in eligibility • Sep 18, 2015 01:39 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

OK, I see where the problem is. TTBOMK, Labissiere has yet to be cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse. Maybe you can post link where it says he has been cleared?

Skal vs Cheick in eligibility • Sep 18, 2015 01:07 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

I could be wrong, but a player is not deemed to be eligible or cleared to play by default, the NCAA officially has to clear him..

Cliff was cleared by the NCAA to play before playing a single game for KU and thus was eligible to play in NCAA sanctioned competition. When mom's dealings came out then the NCAA notified KU that it was investigating Cliff (after he was originally cleared). KU could have played him at its own risk. Labissiere has yet to be cleared by the NCAA and thus he is not eligible to play in any NCAA sanctioned competition and we don't know if it is related to academics or other improprieties, the end result is the same, he cannot play until the NCAA official clears him. Quite different situation than Cliff. Diallo has not been cleared either and the general assumption is that it is because of his transcript...but we really don't know this for sure either.

In the end it is all semantics, neither can play until the NCAA says the can. They can and have been admitted to school and are taking classes, because the NCAA has no say in that part.

@jaybate-1.0

A damn expensive one if that is what he was brought in to do...

@HighEliteMajor

carousal? Freudian slip? Perhaps you meant carousel?...although carousal could work depending on what you meant.

What I heard from a booster with very good connections to the athletic program is that players left for several reasons. Some left because the new style of play did not fit their game, Jordan Webb being the best know, others were nudged out because their future with the program was not good and a third and larger group of players was dismissed because of serious academic and off-the-field issues. As I understand, the academic level of the program had dropped so much due to the lax atmosphere under Gill, that it was in danger of triggering a NCAA investigation and the damage needed to be contained. It is the proverbial choice to either cut your arm and have a chance of making it or not cut it and likely face a slow and certain death.

I do not have any published source or sources to cite, only small snippets here and there and the anecdotal evidence mentioned above. I don't know for a fact if this is what and how it actually happened but it does seem to make some sense. You can draw your own conclusions.

Skal vs Cheick in eligibility • Sep 17, 2015 11:37 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Unless you have some very recent information that I am not aware, I am not sure that is correct. Labissiere has not been cleared by the NCAA and the general speculation is that it is related to his guardian's dealings, but we do not know this for a fact since the NCAA does not provide any information while the student-athletes is being evaluated for clearance.

Don't forget that his senior year he played for a home-school/hybrid school created just for him, while also attending another school; I imagine this sports-academic arrangement raised all kinds of red flags with the NCAA in addition to the alleged financial dealings of his guardian and they are looking closely to his information.

TTBOMK, Labissiere has not been cleared by the NCAA to play; he can attend school as admission is up to UK (just like Diallo), but he cannot play until he is cleared by the NCAA...for whatever reason, be that grades or financial shenanigans.

Yes, he can help them develop off the court. He cannot coach or assist on the court...much like Manning did when he started at KU and before he became an assistant coach. All the available coaching positions are filled now so there is no way for him to take one of those...unless Snacks decides to leave...wink, wink...

@drgnslayr

Believe it or not, the football program is profitable to the tune of $5M-$6M per year, plus it provides employment for number of professional and support staff, it is a boost to local businesses and more importantly...it allows 80+ kids to get a degree at no cost.

So the answer is no, KU cannot do away with the football program because even when it is losing on the field, it provide a big benefit to a lot of people off the field.

I guess it really depends on how old you are and how well you remember player from the past..

While most of us are familiar with Manning, many who saw him play would take Lovellette who played C/PF and was absolutely a great player having been the foundation player for teams that won a NCAA, Olympic and NBA tittles; some would even pick him over Chamberlain.. I saw Valentine play and he would definitely be in the conversation and although did not see Jo Jo White play, people that did think he was the best point guard ever at KU.

I could come up with at least a dozen deserving players...oh well, it is nice to have so many good players from which to pick.

It took me a couple of tries to get it but once I did, I thought your response was pretty funny...

NEXT HALL OF FAMER - BILL SELF • Sep 12, 2015 10:19 PM

@ParisHawk

I should have specified that COBOL 2014 is the first version to have a somewhat compliant compiler, the previous official version COBOL 2002 had compilers that targeted only the .NET framework. Most application are running the much older versions of COBOL and not the mos recent.

I did some COBOL programming back in the early 80's using the State of Kansas IBM 3033 Mainframe and quickly abandoned that environment and switched to UNIX based mini/micro systems. Coming from a FORTRAN background the code seemed easy to read but the lack of structure made it very difficult to follow the logic. I directed the procurement and managed the first UNIX super-micro computer for the State of Kansas; The Kansas DOT still uses some of the C programs I wrote 30 years ago.I don't believe there have any COBOL programs left. .Night and day difference. between the Mainframe/COBOL and the new micro/structured languages environments.

My brother in law was just telling me of a small utility in Maryland that uses a Commodore 64 computer to run some controls and will not replace it because they do not know how to do it and the computer has run flawlessly for well over 30 years; they have a few backups they bought on EBay. Some things will never get fully upgraded/replaced. COBOL is probably in that camp.

...and, I have not heard anything about Cheik...:(

Another example, I would rather have less number of F-22’s and F-35’s than twice that number of F-14’s and A-10s. Of course air superiority is not as familiar to me of a subject.

The F-14 is a 40+ year aircraft that is no longer being used by the US military and the A-10 is a low speed, high maneuverability, ground support aircraft that the military is getting close to retire the few that are left in service. Comparing theme to the F-22 and the F-35 is the equivalent of comparing and old Mustang and a UPS truck to modern, high performance NASCAR cars, in this case not a fair comparison.

The F-14 is the plane that was used in the movie Top Gun in 1986, the F-35 is the plane rumored to be used in the sequel that is apparently in the works.

NEXT HALL OF FAMER - BILL SELF • Sep 12, 2015 06:03 PM

@ParisHawk

You are correct, COBOL has no presence in the Internet, it just was not designed for that. I would say that the 70% even two years ago is greatly exaggerated and I would guess the number is much lower than that since every time a large organization moves away from mainframe into servers, the COBOL applications are migrated to a new system. and the use of mainframes is decreasing fast.

COBOL would be really easy to hack since it is not compiled and the code is open and pretty readable even by someone with little computer knowledge, this is why it is hidden within mainframes with little communication to the outside world. and it could not survive in the Internet.

NEXT HALL OF FAMER - BILL SELF • Sep 12, 2015 05:56 PM

@jaybate-1.0

COBOL is still used as a legacy programming mostly in the banking world and as such it still runs a large number of "transactions," 70% according to the article, but it is over two years old and COBOL is being replaced and I seriously doubt that number is still correct. COBOL has no presence in the Internet as it was not designed as a languages for real time applications but more for a transaction/batch operating environment suited for mainframes which are being quickly replaced by smaller and much more efficient servers. Most of the code is old code that is being maintained and I seriously doubt any new substantial application has been developed in the the last 20 years.

Depending on whether you want client-side or server side scripting, the more widely used programming languages for Internet applications are PHP, Java, Python and Ruby; between the they probably run 99% of internet applications.

I believe we are in the same page. Most coaches will play a 7-8 m,an rotation the majority of the game but other players will also get playing time when games are well at hand or because of injury or foul problems.. Coach Self has rested players for extended periods of time towards the end of the season before.

Also, a deep bench helps not only at game time but also during practice when the starters play against quality competition which helps all players. Coaches will tell you that you can never have enough players for practice and even student assistants are drafted to he[p; having quality players in your deep bench is a luxury that very few team have.

BG, Meet Kyle Korver • Sep 09, 2015 03:22 PM

@ParisHawk

Coach Self and just about every other "name" coach I have heard on the subject always indicate that by NCAA time they like to play 7-8 player,s and if you look at the stats for the top programs, this tends to be the case...except for UK last year and the squid has already stated he will not platoon again.

Another thing that is not being considered is that by the second half of the conference, most other teams know that all they had to do is guard KU shooter close since most KU shooters are spot up shooter and players like Greene do not shoot well with someone on their grill.

Also, some number that are mentioned, such as Mason attempts going from 2.7 to 2.4 per game, really? that computes to 3 less attempts over 10 games and if he shoots 0.33 that is 3 points total over 10 games...really irrelevant.

I would be curious to see how 3 point shooting percentage for other team changes toward the end of the season, due to offense fatigue and teams becaming more competent/savvy on defense. Is KU the only team whose 3 point percentage went down or is it really a trend? I have no answer to this question or time to research it.
