Karma is a beotch...OU scored in an improbable play to avoid OT and beat KU and missed an easy play to avoid OT and lose to ISU. What goes around, comes around. Hopefully KU has had its share of misfortunes for the season and it is good luck from here on.

Only if Mason penetrates and dishes the ball to other players, particularly outside shooters...provided our 3 guns are locked and loaded and working well, In the previous game he tried to penetrate and score and it did not work well at all; way too much capable height inside....oh how I miss TRob and Withey.

BAD BALL STRIKES AGAIN!! • Mar 14, 2015 05:54 AM

@jaybate-1.0

This is from Fox Sports:

"Bill Self was the first to admit that Kansas and Baylor set basketball back Friday night. In fact, the Jayhawks coach said the late Phog Allen and Henry Iba would have been rolling in their graves watching their ugly execution.

Then again, it was exactly what Self wanted to see.

''I think sometimes when it's not very artistic, people say, 'You didn't play well,''' Self explained. ''But if we played a pretty game with Baylor, they would have beat our butts.'"'

Coach Self also seems to think that it is indeed UGLY BALL...just sayin' :) :) :)

What have we done that is so bad that we must be punished with Musburger for every game on ESPN? Fraschilla is OK but I can't stand Musburger. Shouldn't schools/conferences have a say on who calls the games? I take it that the answer is no?

BAD BALL STRIKES AGAIN!! • Mar 14, 2015 04:30 AM

BAD BALL OR UGLY BALL???

I understand the concept and what Coach Self has done, what I am not sure is if we should call it BAD BALL. To me BAD BALL loses games where UGLY BALL wins games....yes, it wins games the ugly way, butt ugly way, Aunt Esther ugly way (for you Sanford and Son fans)... but wins games all the same. No question that KU is winning the ugly way, but if it would be playing BAD BALL it would be losing the games and not winning them.

So my question is shouldn't we call it UGLY BALL rather than BAD BALL?...it sure sounds more appropriate.

I think you might have come up with best explanation. He was involved in the loan early on when he thought he was leaving after one year but once he figured out he needed another year..."others" became impatient and the proverbial s#*t hit the fan.

@nuleafjhawk

No worries, sometimes is nice for posters to bag on a different program for a change. I don't believe Barnes is an elite coach but I don't believe he is a poor coach either. He gets very little fan support; look at their home court and even in big games like KU, the place is not even sold out. I believe that most people in Texas don't really care that much about the program and as long as he makes it to the NCAA and keeps the program out of trouble they are OK with that.

@nuleafjhawk

Your numbers are not correct He has won or tied for the conference title 3 times, finished second 5 times and third 3 times; this is 11 top 3 finishes in 17 years, not really a bad record for team not named KU and whose school main sport is football with basketball a very distant second or even third. His overall record at Texas is 402–178 (.693) and his conference record 186–94 (.664).

He has made it to the NCAA every year except in the 2012-2013 season and has 1 final four and 2 elite eight in the same period.

Someone talk me off the cliff! • Mar 13, 2015 06:40 PM

@KUSTEVE

There is no arguing with your logic. I just don't see that loan happening without Cliff's tacit approval...unless the family falsely represented to the agent that Cliff had approved, although it is hard to believe the agent would not verify.

I personally do not blame the NCAA, they were notified of a potential violation and did what they are supposed to do, investigate the allegation. The fact that Cliff's family had retained a known attorney (he looks shady to me, BTW) before the information came to light and their refusal to meet with the NCAA makes me think there is foul play at their end

LIBERACE DESTROYS K STATE BASKETBALL. • Mar 13, 2015 05:49 PM

@justanotherfan

I believe Foster is a very talented player but also a cancer in the program. Once he realized how good he was he decided he was bigger than the program and acted accordingly...coaches don't like that and he was benched several times; unfortunately, his attitude was contagious and resulted in frustration to the older, more disciplined players. He is probably one or two years away from being NBA material so the question is: does he grow up, toe the line and play one more year at KSU or does he transfer and sit one year? Given his rocky relation with Weber it is hard to see him staying another year, so maybe he ends up playing in China...which seems to be what Europe used to be.

ELLIS A NO PLAY, UNIFORMS SUCK, NEXT • Mar 12, 2015 08:38 PM

@ZIG

I must have missed where Coach Self indicated that Perry is 100%; TTBOMK, what he said is that IF he is 100% he will play.

In your own words, this is a "tuneup" game and by definition, those are the ones in which you try new/different things and not the ones you go balls to the wall to win. We know what Perry can do, it would help to know what Mickelson and Lucas can do under actual game conditions, wouldn't you agree that it would help KU more to tweak the team now than at at the NCAA?

TCU version 3.0. • Mar 12, 2015 06:03 PM

@BeddieKU23

He is a sophomore now so he would have to sit one year if he transfers. He is not ready for the NBA now but could be in one year; his best bet is to grow up and stay at KSU, but I am not sure how that would work with Weber. I bet KSU wishes it still had Martin whose team just eliminated Missouri last night and sent them to one of their worst seasons ever...not a good time to be a MU fan, not that there ever is such a time :)

ELLIS A NO PLAY, UNIFORMS SUCK, NEXT • Mar 12, 2015 05:19 PM

@ZIG

I am not sure I understand your comment. Are you saying that Coach Self should play Ellis even if he is not at 100% strength? For all practical purposes, the conference tournament games as far as KU is concerned, are pretty meaningless when compared to the NCAA Tournament. If KU loses to TCU without Perry, the NCAA seeding committee would take that into consideration (that is the current policy) provide he is available for the Tournament. Worst case, KU drops to a #3 seed, is that so bad compared to giving your star player additional time to recover? I don't think so. In any case, even without Perry, KU should beat TCU, although TCU is trying to play itself into the tournament and will be heavily motivated. If KU plays without Perry and loses, it would not bother me that much as it would give our players additional rest and preparation time for the games that actually count.

A good portion of the lower level and court side tickets are corporate tickets since they are the only one s that can afford them. I hate to see all those "yuppie" couples with very young kids in those seats and none are paying attention to the game, the parents are visiting and the young kids are bored. I am all in favor of making at least one side of the arena dedicated to students like Duke does but the chances of that are not good. I am keeping my fingers crossed that idiot Zenger will not make ALL games pay-per-view.

@Lulufulu

Good summary, but I have a few comments:

UK- Cauley-Stein, Towns and Booker are all gone since they are all projected lottery picks and maybe others will also leave.

UVA - don't really follow them much.

KU - Oubre is a projected lottery pick so he is gone. Cliff is likely done with KU and how good the team is will heavily depend on getting a big. With UK bigs leaving the chances of KU getting a quality big decrease. I personally think that Thon never plays college and goes to China for one year. Zimmerman or Diallo would be excellent pickups but they might end up at UK.

ISU- Hoiberg has a heart condition and that is why he left the NBA; he is not going back there as coach. Niang might tests the waters and he could be gone; he is a really good player that has far exceeded expectation and would do well in the NBA.

UNC - I don't believe they have any player that is sure to leave so they will have a returning group with experience plus whoever they have coming in.

Duke - They will loose Okafor and a couple of other players so how well they do will depend on who stays and who they have coming in. Perhaps the team with the most question marks.

Gonzaga -The will be loaded next year and should be considered a contender. Few has quietly done a great job recruiting and coaching.

Syracuse - Aren't they on probation?

Villanova - Should continue to be good.

WSU - I believe that Baker and VanVleet will leave if they are projected to be drafted in the first round. If this is the case, Marshall might be looking for other top coaching positions as WSU will not be quite the same.

Michigan- About the same as this year, irrelevant.

Arizona - They lose a lot but they have a talented group coming in. Miller will be tested but they play in a weak PAC 12 so they will still dominate.

Texas A&M - They will continue to get spanked by Kentucky.

Louisville - About the same as this year, high expectations but under performing.

Sadder still, is the amt of dumbasses grows faster than the amt of intelligent people.

And faster than the amount of money they can extract from taxpayers so they go spending money they don't have and that our grandchildren will be paying. I say cut government in half and the only difference we will see is little more money in our wallets and a whole lot of fat-assed federal workers having to do actual work for a living. I work with the Federal government and I know if it is cut in half we would not be able to tell the difference. While at it, cut the Senate term to 1-6 year term and the Congress to 3- 2 year terms and get back to having citizen legislators and not professional politicians.

Stepping down from the soap box. Apologies if any one was offended by my comments.

The clear implication was that Memphis knew Rose was ineligible early on but played him anyway. KU, on the other hand, did the right thing and as soon as they found out about a potential issue he did no play anymore. TTBOMK, no one at KU knew about what was happening in Chicago, so it would be unrealistic to expect a school to act on information it did not have or even suspected.

I will guess that KU attorneys are busy at work protecting the interests of the program.

Cliff • Mar 11, 2015 05:01 PM

@drgnslayr

Kansas would have to be crazy to play Cliff knowing there is an investigation afoot; no team in his right mind would. What worries me is that by the time KU was informed of the investigation, the family had already retained and attorney which probably does not come cheap and more likely is being paid by the same agent that made the "alleged" loan in the first place.

If the family had nothing to hide or even if they were led astray by an unscrupulous agent, IMHO, they would have contacted KU immediately and would have been agreeable to meet with the NCAA; the fact that neither happened would appear to indicate that they knew all along that what they were doing was not "kosher" but the allure of a new car, or whatever is they got, was more important than Cliff's future. If there is one player that could have used a second year in college is Cliff; I just don't see him as a lottery pick and based on what I have seen throughout the season, late first round might be the most optimistic outlook, although I believe he night be now in second round/Development/League/China territory. The place where he could have showcased his talent and impressed scouts (NCAA Tournament) seems now like a highly unlikely scenario.

Cliff • Mar 11, 2015 03:35 AM

@SoftballDad2011

I agree with what you are saying when it applies to tangible items and items such as copyrights and even statements of WIP or receivables can be considered tangible; however, when it comes to intangibles items, such as undefined future earnings, there is nothing really that can be filed since there is not tangible property involved. All of this was extensively discussed at the time that LeBron was graduating from High school and his mother got a big loan and the consensus was that the lenders were taking a big risk because other than the good will of LeBron to repay his mother's loan, there is no assurances that they would get re-paid and they would have to go to civil court and get awarded whatever property the could prove she had, and more importantly, they would have to actually get possession of whatever they get awarded, the last part a tall order. Other than that it is really a personal, unsecured loan, and if Cliff was not part of the agreement, he is under no obligation to repay it. Because of this, the assumption is that Cliff had to be involved for that loan to take place, no lender in his right mind would make a loan without the likely payer of the loan not being involved, which leads me to believe that Cliff had to be involved and likeley he is done at KU.

Cliff • Mar 10, 2015 06:49 PM

@SoftballDad2011

In all likelihood, if there was a loan it was not recorder via the method you outlined since it applies when there is physical property against which a lien can be issued. This is what lending institutions do when they lend you money to buy a car or a home and basically insures their money will be protected; when you pay out the loan, you get a lien release of quit claim document that you file with the proper government agency that effectively removes the name of the lending institution as a "co-owner" if you will. I will guess the record you found for Cliff's mom is one of this type.

If money was lent based on potential earnings, it was likely a private contract that would not be filed and if it is not repaid, it would be pursued in Civil (not criminal) Court which could order a "garnishment" of future earnings but without a Court order the lender has very little recourse. Most of this type of contracts are risky for the lender since they are based on future earning above a threshold and if he never earns that money the loan probably would go unpaid with little recourse to the lender. This type of loans are structured more along the lines of what in business we call "seed money" or "good will money." You basically invest some money in good faith with the hope that you will be rewarded with a contract later. It is perfectly legal and I do this even with Government agencies, but it is against NCAA regulations. The NCAA has zero legal authority to force compliance or even compel the interested parties to come to the table; all it can do is rule the player ineligible and the school will stop playing him. This is the extent of the NCAA authority since the NCAA is not a government agency (as many think it is) but simply a private association with voluntary membership. Coach Self made it clear that if the Alexander family is unwilling to talk to the NCAA (which they appear to be) they cannot be forced and there is zero chance the issue gets resolved and Cliff is done at KU.

Hardest to believe stat: KSU goes 4-2 again the top 3 teams or 5-3 against the top 4 teams in the Conference, including a sweep of OU.

Ken Pomeroy jumps the shark...again. • Mar 07, 2015 06:32 PM

@wissoxfan83

There is nothing wrong with computer models, I design engineering computer models and I started creating them when the models design by non-engineers did not pass the reasonableness test, because the original designers really did not understand the engineering part and attempted to explain everything from the mathematical side even when it made no sense from an engineering perspective

Likewise, some of the computer models were developed by mathematicians or weather forecasters (Ken Pomeroy) with knowledge of the math but no knowledge of what they were attempting to model, i.e. basketball. Ken Pomeroy particularly seems to have moved his model away from the mainstream since he went "Hollywood" and his model is now at odds with most every other computer model out there. It is not the models that have problem but Pomeroy's model. He came out with that luck factor (which I call the KU factor, since it seems to be used uniquely to down rank KU) that @Jesse-Newell tried to explain at one time and I have posted many examples of how far off Pomeroy's rankings are, and I have not seen him attempt to justify them any more. Some Pomeroy's numbers, particularly those related to tempo have some merit but his rankings number suck...or blow...or both.

@drgnslayr

Kevin Ollie hit the jackpot and the perfect storm all in one last year. How is that working out for him this year? Tied for 5th in a weak American Conference and ranked 59th as per Ken Pomeroy. Keep in mind that the year UConn won the title, it finished third in conference with a 12-6 record, he was also playing with Calhoun's recruits....can you say Weber? When he shows that he can have his team consistently in the top 20 then I will consider him a better than average coach, until then he is/was just a flash in the pan.

Cliff • Mar 06, 2015 04:22 PM

@wrwlumpy

The NCAA cannot legally compel anyone to cooperate in an investigation or even answer simple questions; cooperation is 100% voluntary. However, the NCAA can withhold clearing the player and effectively preventing him from playing. It looks like Cliff's family is not cooperating and hence the NCAA will not clear him to play, so his career at KU might be effectively over. I have a bad feeling about the attorney in question. IMHO, he is saying all the wrong things, maybe its is the legally correct way to proceed, but to the lay observer it sure looks like he is hiding something.

Here is a video of Arthur McAfee, the attorney; I am not sure I have ever seen a video of an attorney introducing himself in YouTube, via interview outdoors. Every interview with an attorney I have seen before has always been in an nice office or conference room setting.

The reality of playing Bad or worse ball • Mar 06, 2015 04:06 PM

Failing in love? That can't be good. :)

While I tend to agree with @nuleafjhawk that the Tournaments are mostly about money, I also believe they are a reward for the players that get to stay in nice hotel, play in a big arena and have a nice extended weekend.

The reality of playing Bad or worse ball • Mar 06, 2015 03:04 PM

@KUinLA

Larry Brown is a very good coach but sometimes his greatness is exaggerated.

This is his record as head coach:

Professional:

  • NBA Career: 1098-904 (.548 )
  • ABA Career: 229-107 (.682 )
  • Career Total: 1327-1011 (.568 )

College:

  • UCLA 42–17 (.712)
  • KU 135–44 (.754)
  • SMU 64–32 (.667)
  • All College 241–93 (.722)

Yes, he has a good record and has won titles at both levels but his records is not at or near the top in the pros or in college. I can think of dozen mores successful coaches at both levels. Roy Williams (.805) and Bill Self (.825) have much better records at KU

Also, remember that in the title game against OU, Brown wanted to play slow and the players took it upon themselves to speed up (and win) the game. Just sayin'

Cliff • Mar 06, 2015 02:43 PM

Pat Forde is a huge MU homer and hates KU. When a survey was made a couple of years ago among analysts about the best college basketball venue, AFH was in the top 2-3 in every ballot except one and finished (as expected) as the #1 venue. Pat Forde did not have AFH even in his top 10...if you can believe that....this is not just ignorance, it is unfiltered hatred for KU, totally unprofessional behavior, and probably one of the reason he is no longer with ESPN. I would take any thing he writes about KU with a boulder of salt.

Cliff • Mar 06, 2015 06:54 AM

All schools including KU have extensive programs to inform students and parent on what is and isn't permissible. Student in particular go through an orientation program before the season that outlines in great detail what is expected of them. With all the NCAA information readily available and all the precedent out there, any player that claims ignorance of the rules, to me is the equivalent of people suing tobacco companies claiming they did not know cigarettes caused cancer...right....

Ken Pomeroy jumps the shark...again. • Mar 06, 2015 06:09 AM

@sfbahawk

Models are designed to "model and predict." They are weak at the beginning of the season when there is not enough data but at this stage of the season they have reached what is called the "steady state" and should be pretty good. The interesting part is that Pomeroy's model is at odds with most every other model out there, which begs the question is Pomeroy right and all the other models wrong or is it the other way around? One way to evaluate a model is by what is commonly called the "reasonableness test" in which the question is asked do the results look reasonable? If the answer is no, then there is a problem with the model. Obviously Pomeroy's results do not seem reasonable and the majority of other models verify this fact, which logically implies that the Pomeroy model is flawed.

@Lulufulu

So far Manning season (13-17 overall and 5-12 conference) is nothing to write home about; Turgeon, on the other hand, is having perhaps his best season as a Head Coach. I love Manning as much as any Jayhawk fan and I thought he did a great job as an assistant; however, his capability of leading a big time program is yet to be determined.

Ken Pomeroy jumps the shark...again. • Mar 06, 2015 04:56 AM
