KU's bigs under Bill Self • Mar 06, 2015 04:46 AM

@Lulufulu

PFs and Cs are considered "bigs." A stretch 4 or 5 is simply a Center of PF that can also hit from the outside and "stretch" the courts like Love and Nowitski in the NBA and Kaminski in college to name a few. Technically Perry plays PF so he would be considered a "big." I personally think that he will eventually move to SF in the NBA. Many people also consider SFs as bigs and many do not; in many ways they are players not big enough to play PF and too big to play the skilled positions (PG and SG), and hence they are often referred as tweeners. Markiff and Marcus were both considered "bigs" in college since they played Center and Power Forward but in the NBA only Markiff, who plays PF is considered a big since Marcus now plays SF. Interesting that the article mentions Marcus and not Markiff who has been more successful in the NBA and now starts and stars for the Phoenix Suns while Marcus comes of the bench. I also think that omitting Withey shows the article author did not do his homework since he was the best rim protector at KU since Wilt.

Ken Pomeroy jumps the shark...again. • Mar 06, 2015 04:08 AM

According to Ken Pomeroy, KU is ranked behind Baylor, Oklahoma and Wichita State. FWIW, the consensus/average of all the computer polls shows:

  • 8 - KU
  • 10 Baylor
  • 12 _Wichita State
  • 13 - Oklahoma
  • 15 - ISU

KU just won the Conference outright, has a better overall and conference record than Baylor and OU (3-0 against those 2 teams), has the #1 strength of schedule...how can Pomeroy be so consistently wrong and so off the consensus when it comes to KU? By the way, he also has Texas ahead of West Virginia.

!KenPom.PNG ↗

I believe that KU will advance to the Sweet 16. From there on it will depend on match-ups. With a good draw KU will advance to the Elite 8 and from there on it's a crap shoot and "survive and advance." The strong non-con and conference schedule and games like Florida and West Virginia where KU had to come back from way behind will help in the Tournament. An Elite 8 appearance would make me happy, anything beyond that is just gravy.

TRob signs with Sixers... • Mar 05, 2015 11:38 PM

@Lulufulu

The Sixers are hard to figure out. They just traded Michael Carter-Williams, their best players and reigning rookie of the year. TRob should do well there.

@Lulufulu

Turgeon was at KU from '83 to '87, Manning from '84 to '88.

Turgeon is 50 and in his 17th year as HC in College basketball,

Manning is 48 and in his 3rd year as HC in College basketball,

Not even close in HC experience.

Jay bilis • Mar 05, 2015 11:25 PM

There are currently several programs battling for the "best program" tittle. Some are the "dirty" programs such as UK and some are the "clean" programs such as KU and Duke. Bilas has a vested interest in taking KU down a peg or two since it directly benefits Duke. He is as much a Duke homer as Pat Forde is a MU homer....we need to get us a KU homer in the analysts ranks.

@wissoxfan83

The thread is about Turgeon and Self being COTY candidates...logical assumption, wouldn't you think.

As far as Turgeon and Manning, I don't believe either one is ready to take over KU. although, if they were the only two choices, I would have to go with Turgeon based on his experience and record. Manning still has to prove he can coach a top program; his time at WF has been rocky, to say the least and I would not consider Tulsa a big program but more of a steppingstone.

FWIW. Even well into conference play, Greenberg did not think KU would win the conference...show how much he knows.

Hate to give all that money to Missouri. I wish they could convert the Sporting Kansas City Stadium at the Legends into an arena and hold the Tournament there.

They played Saturday at Baylor; it made no sense to go back just to leave shortly again.

@wissoxfan83 said:

@JayhawkRock78 Why?

Must you ask why? Because Coach Self is "our" coach and as KU fans...this is how we roll....

Big money maker and PR bonanza for the Conference. Also, one lucky bottom ranked team can get lucky, win the tournament and grab the automatic conference bid.

TRob signs with Sixers... • Mar 05, 2015 10:38 PM

TRob has signed with Sixers ↗for the rest of the season. Hopefully he gets the opportunity he deserves. To all of us familiar with the personal tragedies he endured, nothing would please us more than to see him succeed in the NBA.

Now, I need to catch up on the 20+ threads I am behind due to travel and other work engagements.

He hit a bunch of mid-range jumpers in the first game against Baylor . I just don't think he has the range to shot the 3 which SF need to to.

One night ONLY: An Iowa St. fan • Mar 02, 2015 03:46 AM

Interesting. Not too long ago we all thought we would be cheering for OU to win the game since ISU was nipping at the heels...oh, how things change in a blink of an eye in the Big 12...

I have said it before, fans from other conference teams see Perry as an All_Conference player; it is mostly some KU fans, including some posters in this forum, that do not see him this way. The grass is alwasy greener on the other side of the fence...

HOW NOT TO GET AN OPEN LOOK THREE • Feb 28, 2015 07:27 AM

@HighEliteMajor

Amazing. You continue to misrepresent what I said. Let me put this in simple terms:

Greene said "We’ve got to get our spacing right. Guys are on top of each other,"

Do you really think that coach Self plans to reduce the space where player operate and plans to have players on top of each other? I don't and no one in his right mind would think that. This is simply what I said ...Coach Self plans likely do not include players having the wrong spacing and he most definitively does not plan to have players on top of each other; when this happens, as Greene indicates, it IS NOT because Coach Self instructed them to have the wrong space and be on top of each other, it is simply because the players are not executing the plan correctly and that is the end result.

You can spin it or interpret it any way you want but i t does not change what I wrote. I explained it once before but you chose to see it your own way and in a way that makes Coach Self look incompetent, it is not the first and likely will not be last time you do it.

Have it your way...I could quote Rhett Buttler but why waste any more effort on a lost cause.

@jaybate-1.0

Wooden played a hybrid 3-2 zone with his shorter teams, with 3 players playings outside man-to-man and 2 player inside playing a loose zone. It worked for him then, but those were different times.

HOW NOT TO GET AN OPEN LOOK THREE • Feb 28, 2015 03:56 AM

This was my statement:

"We’ve got to get our spacing right. Guys are on top of each other,” he said.

"Unfortunately that comment would indicate the problem is one of execution rather than planning; there is no way a coach would plan for that"

It clearly indicates that no coach would plan for the wrong spacing or players being on top of each other. I did not indicate that coaches do not have plan "B" when the main plan is not working (the other team defense is wise to it) or it is not being properly executed; in fact, I have been saying all along that Coach Self is trying to develop the inside game as his plan "B." Amazing how a comment can be taken out of context just for the sake of being a contrarian. My last post on the subject.

He did have excellent timing though and he made a very good living in the NBA blocking shots and rebounding.

IS BRANNEN JUST A SPOT UP SHOOTER? • Feb 27, 2015 09:10 PM

@wrwlumpy

Looks like the writer has been reading my posts. I have been saying for a while now that Greene is the best spot up shooter and that his defensive rebounding has improved...now, if he can learn to use screens to create some space and his own shot, then he would be something else.

New post season uniforms unveiled... • Feb 27, 2015 05:55 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

If I understand correctly, as part of the agreement with Adidas, KU has to wear a "new design" uniform for at least few games every season. Remember the camo/zubaz pants debacle? KU ended up wearing them for a couple of games in the Big 12 Tournament. Unfortunately, this type of clothing is favored by the younger crowd who really does not have a clue what style or traditions are, and after all, Adidas pays big bucks to have big name teams promote them...at least they are not as hideous as the camo unis. This is the price you pay for having a big clothing manufacturer give you a lot of money...there is no such thing as a free lunch.

New post season uniforms unveiled... • Feb 27, 2015 05:28 PM

What exactly are those squares on the bottom corner of the leg? Cell phone holders?

The wide waist bands make me think they made the shorts too small (maybe they are surplus Adidas soccer shorts???) and added a waist band to make them longer...at least that is what comes to mind every time I watch Louisville.

HOW NOT TO GET AN OPEN LOOK THREE • Feb 27, 2015 05:13 PM

@drgnslayr

"We’ve got to get our spacing right. Guys are on top of each other,” he said. "

Unfortunately that comment would indicate the problem is one of execution rather than planning; there is no way a coach would plan for that...although a couple of posters will probably disagree. I love our 3 point shooters but most are spot up shooters that need to be set in place and open to score. The announcer at the last game indicated that Devonte is the only player that can create his own shot, Selden can also get himself open to receive the pass and a lot of Mason's hi9h percentage 3s come when the defense is not quite set and he is still open. Greene is arguably the best pure 3-point shooter ever at KU, but he cannot create his own shot if his life depended on it.; he needs to learn to take advantage of screens and lose the defender. Obviously this issue will not be resolved this year but in the off season, Greene needs to work on improving his defense (which he has done to some extent, his defensive rebounding has been a nice surprise) and create his own shot by creating space to operate.

I watch a fair amount of NBA games and, say what you will about the NBA, but those guys sure can shoot. It is amazing how the better 3 points shooters are able to create their own shot in a blink of an eye and score from 2 feet farther away than in college. Harden will break both of your ankles and then take an open 3, Curry is tightly guarded one moment and in a blink of the eye he is taking an open 3...oh well, wishful thinking.

I don't like to involve families but since Kietzman inserted his own daughter into the conversation, it begs the question...how "homely" must she be that her own dad thinks is OK with her marrying such an idiot?

The Mayor Was Out Coached • Feb 26, 2015 10:47 PM

@drgnslayr

Yeap. Tough to be the team with the bull's eye on the back. Other than McKay, ISU played well below par; McKay has really been a great player for ISU.

The Mayor Was Out Coached • Feb 26, 2015 10:27 PM

Live by the 3, die by the 3. This is what happens when you have one dimensional, 3-point shooting team that goes 6-24 (25%) from the 3 while your opponent goes 14-24 (54%). The two steals in the last two minutes were key as they denied ISU the opportunity to score but more importantly, they used valuable clock.

The "Big XII is Awesome" Scenario • Feb 26, 2015 09:39 PM

@Hawk8086

The winner will go no better than 14-4 and most likely 13-5.

WVU has away games at KU and Baylor and at home against OSU. I just don't see them going 3-0; more likely 1-2 to finish 11-7.

ISU has away games at TCU and KSU, two hungry teams trying to get quality wins and they also play OU at home in a battle to see which one threatens KU; the loser is likely out of the race. Best possible outcome 3-0 to finish 13-5, and if the go 3-0 they will definitely earn their place.

OU has home games with TCU and KU and a road game against ISU. Best possible outcome 3-0 with a chance to tie for 1st place, More likely, the lose at ISU and beat KU and finish 12-6.

KU has home games against Texas and WVU and a road game against OU. Most likely outcome is that they win both home games and then they play OU, if they win they have the title alone if they lose they share the title with the winner of OU-ISU. In this scenario, I would rather see ISU beat OU so OU does not have the added incentive of playing for the title. By holding serve at home KU is guaranteed at least a share of the title. No question that OU having to play ISU and KU has the tougher schedule, on the other hand they also have their own destiny in their hands...and so does KU.

Whichever of the top 4 teams runs the table will likely win outright or share the title .Interesting that TCU has games against both ISU and OU and they might throw a monkey wrench on the the entire process.

@Hawk8086

No.

Do we root for Baylor tonight? • Feb 26, 2015 08:17 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Just a little hyperbole but not too far off. I am not saying that the other items do not count, of course they do; however, match-ups and luck have a big influence. Just close to home...look at KU in '88, it had no business winning the tournament and yet it did; on the other hand, how many KU teams that were clearly the best that season did not? I can think of a least 2 or 3. Look at the most recent season, KU against any other similarly seeded team other than Stanford (bad match up for KU) advances at least to the next round. Also, who would have predicted UConn winning the title? I will guess no ones, since they were a marginal/barely a top 25 team and yet they won with a good dose of favorable match-ups and a lot of luck. Remember...survive and advance. Just my opinion, no lectures please.

Correction: I apologize if I offended anyone's sensitivities. Please feel free to lecture away; as always, I reserve the right to not reply.

@Kip_McSmithers

Message to KSU fans:

Three simple options to end court storming:

  • Option 1 - Become a KU fan. We expect to win every game at home against all comers and we don't storm the court...we've been there before.

  • Option 2 - Become an elite program, like KU, that expects to win every game and usually does.

  • Option 3 - See Option 1

I am asking too much from KSU fans to follow the logic?

Do we root for Baylor tonight? • Feb 26, 2015 07:08 PM

@BeddieKU23

The tournament is all about match-ups...and a whole lot of luck. Most of the time is not as much about how good the other team is but how well it matches up.
