WVU bound and determined not to allow 3 points. KU is only 1-4...
'sup fellow hawksters...
KU 6 fouls and WVU only 7?
At KU, Brown bought a plane ticket so a recruit that was visiting KU could go to his grandmother's funeral; ironic, that the recruit did not even come to KU. KU was arrogant and thought it could win the case with the NCAA with in-house consel instead of hiring attorney that specialized in the subject. Instead of getting a slap in the wrist, KU was banned from the Tournament and cold not defend the tittle in 1989 and broke the streak of NCAA appearances. Even more ironic, as a result of that infraction, the NCAA instituted a program to help prospect in the very same predicament...go figure.
I am not sure about Svi anymore. He will likely be playing for Ukraine at the World University Games; maybe he gets a good offer from a Euro club and stays, although if he wants to play ion the NBA, coming back to KU would be the best way.
The agenda is to represent the USA...with the KU team as the foundation. Technically, Coach Self could use players from other schools as well (not saying he would) but since it is the USA team, any American college player is eligible, right?.
Very familiar with that aircraft. The Warthog is one of the coolest and weirdest looking attack planes but now too slow for modern anti-aircraft artillery and it is being phased out. The pilot sits inside a titanium tub to protect him from ground fire and it is ideal to blow up older tanks and the 30mm rotary cannon with armor busting uranium piercing shells under the cockpit is impressive (and scary) and it is the biggest gun ever mounted on a attack plane. I have actually sat inside the cockpit of the only two-seat version of the A-10 ever build that is stationed at Edwards Air Force Base, although is no longer operational.
One of these days I will have to post a link to a gallery with picture of all the planes (including prototypes I have seen through my work over the last 25 years with the Air Force and NASA..
My favorite looking aircraft is still the old P-51 Mustang...I flew in one so I am probably biased..
Read about Sam Gilbert ↗ and will give you a different perspective on Coach Wooden ↗. Lots of articles ↗about his career and in many ways, the legend is better than reality. No question that Wooden was a coaching genius, but the UCLA program when he was there was anything but clean. There is no way he did not know what was going on and later in life he said that much. Would it surprise you to learn that few year later when Larry Brown (yes, that Larry Brown) was the coach at UCLA his NCAA Finals appearance was vacated?...and yet , no one holds it against Larry Brown.
Wooden is not the one I would name when looking at examples of clean programs. Bobby Knight for all his harshness and abrasive personality run a very clean program that graduated most every player.
Did you say artillery? I will take this Paladin M109A6 self propelled Howitzer...most advance mobile artillery system in the world.
Whether we like it or not in our system an individual still has the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. Regardless of what we think of him personally, there is no question that as a coach he has been wildly successful and, if you look at all the current coach's rankings, he is usually in the top 5 and often ahead of Coach Self. I understand WE don't like him and WE don't agree with the way he has done it or the way he still does it, but you cannot deny his success.
Again, the easy answer is to say that he is not a good coach and he wins because of talent, but that is really disingenuous. Most knowledgeable basketball analysts consider him to be one of the top coaches in college basketball.
Do I like the squid? No. Would I like him coaching at KU? No. Is he worthy of the HOF? Yes.
Like I mentioned, I don't care for Pete Rose the person either, but as a player he deserves to be in the HOF...you cannot deny his success as a player.
OK here is the offense plan. Post Greene at the 3 point line, break the press with a pass to a wide open Greene...Kaching!!! Greene goes 10 of 12 from 3. Just kidding...or am I?
I saw Pete Rose play at the top of his career with the Reds; nobody played baseball with the energy that he did. As a player, he is second to none; however, as an individual I understand that the is a real a-hole. As player there is no question in my mind that he should be in the Hall of Fame...as a coach??? maybe not so much.
I always thought that if coaches/managers were "required" to bet for their own teams to win, games would be a hell of a lot more competitive. Just sayin'
Interesting. Do you field the best possible team since you represent the entire country? Do you reward players that have been in the system? Do you select players that will help you in the future even when the team will not be nearly as good? How do you balance the national versus KU image? Playing as KU, a loss is not that big of a deal, but when you represent the entire country a loss has much different and greater meaning...at least it would for me...
In all fairness, Calipari was never fund to be personally responsible for the violations...we might not like it or agree with the conclusions but that is the what the official record has. :(
...on the other hand, wouldn't a player that has declared (he is obviously good) and is familiar with the system give you better option than an "unknown quantity" incoming player not familiar with the system? Just thinking aloud...
Something to ponder. Worst case...we get another 2 top recruits and we somehow get the 3 pro players mentioned and Oubre and Alexader declare. If the 3 incoming players are selected along with the 3 pros and the two declared players, that leaves 4 spots for returning players and 7 spots for players that would play next season. Granted, this is a doomsday (or some say best case) and highly unlikely scenario but possible nonetheless. It would be a difficult decision to pass on the pros or to tell the incoming freshmen they will not play...lots of tough decisions.
Me neither. Probably we will not know until they are ready to select the 12 players and start practice . Until then it is just speculation.
I agree. We should support ALL teams, regardless of gender, but the reality is that men;s sports will always have the greater audience.
I followed the track and field teams last season and they were great and the Volley Ball team was also exciting and fun to watch; however, wouldn't be nice to also have men's volley ball and soccer teams? I would bet that we would have a large number of people interested, particularly for soccer, but this not an option.
P.S. Do you realize that in my area even the women's sports are blacked out? I know I wanted to watch the women's volley ball and basketball teams until I found out I could not...how stupid is that!!!
Why would they not be eligible if they declare? They are still student only a couple of months removed from KU. If current NBA players that have been gone for while are eligible, the players still at KU that just declared should be eligible, wouldn't you think? Just signing for a summer class might not be enough, the requirement call for "completion towards a degree."
Again, lots of uncertainty until the time when the rubber hits the road and the 12 players have to be selected.
What exactly is this "baseball" sport you speak of? :)
If you ask most male athletes, Title 9 was and still is an utter failure. KU now fields only 6 men's teams and 10 women's teams and lots of male athletes that would love to compete in sports other than those 6 cannot. Unfortunately there are not enough women interested in sports and if they were to increase their participation more men's teams could be added but this is not the case, despite Athletic Departments efforts to draft more women. Our idiotic AD went as far as restricting men's BBall and FBall broadcasts in order to promote women's sports that have a essentially non-existing audiences and in the process alienated a huge portion of the fan base.
I am not at all anti-women and I wish they can field as many teams as possible, my point is that men's sports have been disproportionally and negatively affected by the lack of women participation. It should not be this way. Title 9 was a political solution that made the Merlot drinking, pot smoking, politically correct crowd fell good about themselves while completely ignoring the people they hurt; Like most political compromises, the unintended consequences were larger than the actual benefits. Just my 2 cents.
P.S. I am not anti-women, actually I am quite the opposite, so please don't use my words above to label me as such.
A few thought about the subject...
First, as I understand McLEmore has been taking classes hoping to eventually graduate, so he might be available. TTBOMK, TRob has not taken classes recently so he is more likely not eligible. Tyshawn graduated form KU, and unless he is taking course towards a graduate degree he is more likely not eligible. Also, if any of these players is under contract with a pro team, chances are slim to none that they get permission to play (remember Paul Geoge?); teams are discouraging players to play even for the National Team so playing at the World University Games seems even less likely.
Wiggins, Embiid and Svi, if they play at all, they would be playing for Canada, Cameroon and Ukraine and not for the team that represents the USA since you need to be a US citizen to play for the USA; this much is pretty clear.
The good: KU gets to have an early start on practice and not incur the wrath of the NCAA; however, since only 12 players are allowed, It is not clear if only these players would be allowed to practice or the entire team. A good showing at the Tournament would enhance KU's reputation plus a trip to China for the selected players is big plus.
The bad: How about the players that do not get selected? If KU signs a couple of more big time recruits, do they have a place on the team? How about the players (if any) that elect to go to the NBA, say Oubre and Alexander, do they get a place and practice with the team even when they will not be there next season? If this is the case and we also get some current NBA players, how does this really help next season's team? Let's keep in mind that KU will be playing against all-star teams with a lot of professional players and a bad showing for KU could hurt more than help. If NBA or NBA bound players are selected it might leave as few as 7 spots for players that will be at KU next season...what effect will this have on team chemistry? I believe it would not difficult to have the AD or donors pay for the entire team to go on the trip even when only 12 will play; however, I am not sure if the NCAA would approve it.
Maybe some of the items above are not really big issues but it might end up putting the coaching staff in a difficult situation...BTW, there might also be a limit on the number of coaches and support personnel allowed so more choices might need to be made.
Not at all. What I was trying to say was that family-wise there seems to be no pressure for Oubre to go after one year, although the way he is playing It wold not surprise me to see him gone after this season. I don't know how much pressure there is or isn't on Cliff to bolt o the NBA so that part of the equation is an unknown; however, going by what he has shown to date, I would honestly say that he needs an extra year, but you know...the NBA drafts on potential, yada, yada, yada...so whether he is ready or not might not be nearly the factor we think it should be. Also, and as I mentioned before, a good showing at the Dance can change perspective in a hurry.
Add: I believe McLemore was much farther along than Ouubre is right now. McLemore had been in the system for 2 years and was starter (and star of the team) his entire second year or the first year he was eligible.
Withey had foul problems in his first two season and then he went to almost completely eliminate that problem, but there is no question that from early on he could block...
Withey stats 2010-2011 - So.- 162 minutes, 6.2 mpg, 2.3 ppg, 1.8 rpg - 19 blocks - 1 block/8.5 minutes
Withey stats 2011-2012 - Jr. - 968 minutes, 24.8 mpg, 9.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg - 140 blocks - 1 block/6.9 minutes
Withey stats 2012-2013 - Sr. - 1144 minutes, 30.9 mpg, 13.7 ppg, 8.5 rpg - 146 blocks - 1 block/7.8 minutes
Lucas stats 2014-2015 - So. - 214 minutes, 11,5mpg, 2.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg - 8 blocks - 1 block/26.8 minutes
When it comes to blocking Withey and Lucas are in completely different levels.
Much like KSU, WVU's schedule is back loaded with the better conference teams. At one time KSU was second in the Conference and getting top 25 votes and then...reality happened. Hard to believe that KSU swept OU; some times it is more about match ups and less about overall talent; KSU appears to be a bad match up for OU.
Four players from the Wolves were in the NBA Rising Start Game; they have great potential to be really good in the near future. Wiggins was the MVP of the game and Zach LaVine won the dunk contest.
In addition to what you said, Withey had better timing (the key to blocking shots) than just about anyone I have seen in many years in college BBall..
He is a red-shirt sophomore; this is his third year at KU.
We have seen players leave before they are ready because of their family situations. I don't know what Cliff's family situation is but is conceivable that he could leave early even if he is not a lotto pick. Oubre's dad, on the other hand, while not wealthy has indicate that Kelly will stay in college for as long as needed and he does not have to be a OAD.
While Lucas skills are not elite, he does have solid fundamentals. seems to work hard and he is a smart young man. I am not sure if we will see anytime soon the height and timing combination (for blocks) that Withey had. Looked like Mickelson might have that combination, but so far it does not seem like he does.
I have deleted my post as you requested for the sake of harmony in the Forum. I stand by what I wrote and I sincerely hope you mean what you said.
I want to thank the members that reached out in support. Let's hope that today is indeed a new day.
To the best of my knowledge and recollection, Calipari was a (grad?) Assistant at KU from '82-'85 and Self took his position in '85 when Calipari left for Pittsburgh. Calipari left at the end of the '84-'85 season and Self joined KU for the '85-86' season. Their stints at KU did not overlap.
I feel bad for Frankamp, a Kansas kid with a lifetime dream of playing for KU and after reaching his dream losing it, "apparently" as a result of his own actions. I hope he gets his act together and manages to salvage his college career since playing in the NBA seems like a very long shot at best. He is now Marshall's prized recruit and/or problem.
I don't believe either one was a full assistant under Larry Brown; they were graduate assistants and Self took Calipari's position when he left to become and Assistant at Pittsburgh. I am not sure about Coach Self at OSU, he might have started as grad assistant and eventually moved to Full Assistant. In any case, Calipari started as a HC 5 years earlier than Coach Self; Calipari also coached 3 of those years in the NBA (NJ Nets)
I believe you are right. Much like Markiff, Alexander's decision will be made just before the draft based on the position where he would be drafted. Last time I checked, most boards had him as a middle to late first round and few as borderline lottery pick with a couple of lottery picks as well. Like most elite program coaches, Coach Self has access to many NBA scouts and execs and can fairly closely project where he would be drafted. With a good showing at that showcase we call the NCAA tournament, he has a chance to move up. If he is projected to be a lottery pick he will leave, middle of first round 50-50, late first round or second round he stays...I think...
I don't believe Coach Self qualifies...yet. These are the qualifications for induction ↗ and Coach Self does not quite have 25 years as Head Coach and/or Full Time Assistant. Calipari started as HC in 1988 at UMass and Coach Self started in 1993 at Oral Roberts. I am sure that once he meets the requirement he will be inducted, no question about it.
It should not be that complicated for a reporter to get a copy of the arrest report or the transcripts of the Court proceedings. It is possible that a judge could seal the record but cannot think of a reason why any judge would do that.
