He already has a pre-existing level of trust with Hudy and with Coach Self to provide further guidance, KU might be the ideal place to rehab. It would be mutually beneficial since KU could use it as s recruiting tool.
I wonder if he will spend the summer in Lawrence working with Andrea Hudy like several of the former players now in the NBA do.
It really depend on the type of frame you have. Shaq and Barkley had much bigger frames (and hopefully bigger bones) that could carry the weight. Putting extra weight on your bones and particularly joints, is a recipe for a short career, specially if you have a propensity to injury like Embiid appears to have. He indicated he played at KU at 230 and it allowed him to be very athletic; at 250 he might lose some of that but might be better equipped to handle other players. I see only downside with anything over 260, but my information is very limited and I do not have any inside information or any data to back it up...so I could be way off, but I don't think I am.
Nice stats...
Looks like both KU and ISU shoot better from the top of the circle than they do from the corners. I would guess that when you look at all the games, shots taken from the corner are less guarded than shots taken from the top of of the key; I don't have any stats to back this up, but it looks to me that when players shoot from the corner, they are more open, more often than shooting for the top of the key and hence the better overall shooting percentage. In the NBA there is a clear advantage to shooting form the corner since the 3 point line at the corners is almost 2 feet closer to the hoop than at the top of the arc.

Can you imagine how frustrated coaches get when they have a good game plan and the players choose to go a different way? I remember Calipari going into the court and physically pushing one of the twins into position...probably should have been a "T."
He was quite the jazz musician as well...
James Garner...Rockford...one of may favorite actors of all time.
Again, you have it right; unfortunately both Perry and Alexander are playing out of position. Perry should be playing the 3 and Alexander the 4, but now because of need, they have been shifted to PF and Center where they are undersized and not performing as well as they could, Having said that, Perry had very good game in my opinion, particularly since he played on 7 minutes in the first half when he was playing great and had 7 of KU"s first 10 points.
With most people, gaining weight is a lot easier than losing it. When I saw Embiid's photo my first thought was...yoga pants. :)
You are absolutely spot on. Perry seems to be a favorite target and so are Selden and Traylor and of course, Coach Self. A few days ago I posted my version of the "whack-a-hawk" game that seems to be the favorite game of some posters.
I know that we don't need to be homers all the time, but posting only about the negatives does not make a poster objective or unbiased; posting both sides does. I tend to concentrate on the positive aspects since I know there are plenty of comments on the other side to more than offset my "crimson and blue" colored opinions.
I agree on the commentators, and I posted before that the only one that seems to have current information on KU is Fran Frascilla; I believe he is ESPN"s Big 12 analyst. The others just point out dated information. I understand that they cannot keep up with every little detail of every team, but their research team with all the ESPN resources should be able to provide up to date information...on the other hand, they seemed to have every little detail on Hoiberg going back to his days as a ball boy at ISU and they also kept pumping out information on Kentucky all day long.
I have no clue, but I am done posting to him.
I am on the record saying that 14-4 will likely win the conference (maybe even 12-6) and holding home court advantage is critical. I thought that Texas. ISU, OU, Baylor and West Virginia were all not just potential but likely loses. I wish KU would have won yesterday but at this point I am not too concerned.
I was referring more to the condition related freshman wall where younger players (more often than not, bigs), physically crash because at this level they get pushed around by other players where in HS they were the ones doing the manhandling; Cliff typically guards players bigger than he is. Yesterday, it looked like he was getting caught off position because he was late to his assignment and did not have the speed or reaction time to get in position to defend. Hopefully he catches his second wind and finishes the season strong.
That is an excellent review that illustrates why Alexander sat most of the second half. Has Alexander hit the proverbial freshman wall?
He was an assistant coach in the NBA and moved to a front office job because of his health situation. I am afraid that the long NBA season and the huge egos in the League are more than he needs health-wise. He has sweet deal at ISU and I don't see him leaving any time soon.
Did you miss the part where OU's arena was 1,000+ people over capacity? No empty seats there and plenty loud. Also, you must really not watch many Texas games; compared to the way it usually is, it was absolutely rocking.
Like I said, AFH has been sold out for as long as I can remember and It is always loud; in fact, it is officially the loudest college arena period. Like many other schools such as Duke, UK and Louisville, KU is a basketball school and as such the basketball games are always sold out and very loud. Texas and Oklahoma are football schools and the basket ball programs are distant second to the football programs, much like the football program is at KU and the other schools I mentioned. Comparing the Texas or Oklahoma basketball arenas to AFH is like comparing Memorial Stadium to the Texas and Oklahoma football stadiums on game day...both comparisons are silly.
You asked for an explanation, I gave you one...with facts/numbers. If you don't like the answer, either don't ask the question or reply with with a rational answer that supports your contention. Like every other forum sport or otherwise, what we post here are personal/subjective opinions and when we don't see eye to eye, we politely agree to disagree.
P.S. A comma here and a period there would make your posts much easier to read; by the way, capital letters are also used to start sentences and not just for "shouting" on line.
We must have watched different games. Lloyd Noble Arena has an official capacity of 11,562 and the official attendance for the game was 12,730 and I watched the majority of the game and it was pretty loud, not AFH loud...but then what arena is...
Frank Erwin Center has an official capacity of 16,500 and yesterday the attendance was 13,204, not a bad number for Texas who is really a football school and basketball runs a distant second. Again I watched the majority of the game and at times it got loud, and once again, not AFH loud ...but then, no other arena is.
I think you are spoiled by AFH.
A few observations before and during the game...
During game day the comment ...KU has one top front lines in the country had me ROTFLAMF.
Bilas showed up wearing Nike sneakers with huge swooshes on the side and sat at the end with the Nike logo prominently displayed...how tacky. As far as I could tell all the other announcers wore plain dress shoes.
Jay Williams uncovering an ISU t-shirt under his shirt ala Superman...cheesy way to play to the crow, but then...he is a dukie
Calipari had 2 segment that I saw. In the first one he was asked what he would do if he was appointed NCCA commissioner for 1 day and his answer was: first, eliminate that rule that limits foreign junkets to 1 every 4 years and allow teams to travel overseas basically whenever they want, and second, allow teams to play anyone they want during pre-season including other Division teams ( he mentioned Duke) and the games would not count on the official record, and for the teams that do not want not do this, allow more days of practice before the season. Sounded like a PR attempt to control damage in view of the formation that UK paid for other teams to travel to the Bahamas.
In the second snippet I saw they asked him about the number of players he should play and he indicate that "the ideal number of players in the rotation is 7 and 6-1/5 is even better and 8 is too many and 9 way too many." As I indicated before, most coached favor that number including Self.
Look like ESPN has now elevated Hoiberg to a level reserved only for Calipari and coach K; the whole game day was like a "tribute" to Hoiberg. By the way Bilas kept saying "to be the champ you have to beat the champ" hmmm...where did I see that before? Maybe Bilas reads KUBuckets???
Bilas criticizing the "T" for "bouncing the ball over his head"...Hello Jay...by rule when a player bounces the ball over his head is an automatic T; really a no brainer call.
The referees apparently missed the lecture on over the back fouls. In one sequence there were 3 over the back fouls that were not called. One of my guests (and MU fan) commented that KU was getting shafted. The dunk by MCKay was an over the back foul and he not only got the basket but a free throw as well...this was at least a 3 and potentially 5 point swing and to me, a key play that swung the game to ISU. The charge on Lucas was ridiculous. Looked like the refs did not want fans jumping from the stands wanting to punch them so they decided to call the game heavily in favor of ISU and not risk life and limb.
The commentators repeatedly indicated that KU needed to get the ball inside and every time I kept thinking this the one that sends @HighEliteMajor to emergency. :(
A few game stats:
- First half 3 points: KU 5-10, ISU 3-10
- Second half 3 points: KU 4-13, ISU 6-10
- Points off turnovers: KU -14, ISU 13
- Second chance points: KU 15, ISU 5
- Bench points: KU 19, ISU 14
- Points in the paint: KU 34, ISU 40
- **Fast break points: KU 10, ISU 21 - Most critical stat **
In my opinion, the highlighted stats were key. KU's 3 point shooting percentage dropped in the second half and ISU doubled, but clearly the transition game was the biggest factor.
I have company coming for the game so I will not be able to post much, only follow the chat. Hopefully KU will not disappoint...
RCJHGKU!!!
IMHO, KU's defense versus ISU's offense will dictate the tone of the game. Whichever team imposes its will on the other, i,e, KU's defense or ISU's offense, will likely prevail.
it depends on whether good KU or bad KU shows up. Good KU wins comfortably, bad KU can lose big. KU has a better chance of winning this game if it stays in the 50s or 60s, the higher the score the better chance for ISU to win. KU's defense versus ISU offense will set the tone for the game...or KU can score 50 in the first half (remember '88?) and outgun ISU. The line has dropped 1/2 point and it is now 3-1/2 which is less than what I think the home court advantage (typically between 3-6 points) would be for this particular game. As amped up as the crowd was during game day and how important this game is in the conference race, I would say the home court advantage would be 5-6 points.
As I have mentioned before, the opening line has a resemblance to what the end result would be, but once the bets start coming in, the line is moved to balance the money bet (not the number of bets) and it has nothing to do on who will win or what the margin of victory will be; Vegas want bet even;y balanced so it has a guaranteed profit.
In the last 3 games Baylor was favored and KU won. Against TTU, KU was favored by 14 and won by over twice that. Against OSU, KU was favored by 7(?) ad won by 10.
Most of the time, the line will open at a number and pretty quick it will settle on a new number that is reasonably close ad will keep bets balanced. Ask yourself, why would the line change when nothing else related to the game itself has? Same teams, same venue, same coaches, no injury report...nothing...It changes because bets are leaning one way and the line needs to be changed so the new bets will go the other way and balance the overall wagered money.
Experienced and professional bettors bet with their heads and they have their own services that provide detailed information and they bet accordingly depending on where the line is. Amateur or occasional bettors bet with their heart and follow allegiance rather than logic. Nothing wrong with either approach; one does for a living, the other one for fun.
I see your point; however, I cannot see any situation where Coach Self would ask a player to get a "T," none whatsoever. If there is a situation where a point need to be made to the refs, he would do it himself and not ask a player...isn't it his job to do this? In fact, many time coaches will do just this to fire up their teams. A heat of the battle "T" that fires up the team and the crowd and enhances team chemistry is not so bad...just my opinion, but then, I tend to be old school...
I absolutely see your point. Mine was more an illustration of how much of crap shoot the NCAA tournament is. Logic would dictate that KU had a slim to none chance of winning and it did; however, there were several years when KU had a great chance of winning and did not. Had the tournament been a best of X games, KU does not win in '88 but likely wins in others. This is why, like many others in this forum, I value the conference title as much as the national title since it implies continues excellence rather than a lucky/karma-ic run in March.
In another thread there is a link to Bilas article that makes some good points and I elaborate on those when I get to my full size keyboard...too much work on a tablet.
The Vegas line has ISU by 4...
Ah...yes. The fine art of couch burning...
Look at the numbers against the last 3 teams KU played in the tournament.
- KSU loss 72-61 at AFH
- OU loss 74-65 at AFH
- KSU win 64-63 at Ahern
- Duke loss 74-70 at AFH
- OU 95-87 loss at Lloyd Noble Arena
- KSU 69-54 loss at Kemper Arena
KU went 1-5 and the only win was against KSU by 1 point.
KU went to the tournament unranked (outside top 25) and was unranked since the 9th week of the season and had a 21-11 record and a #6 seed. The 11 losses are the most ever by a champion. KU was not expected to go past the second round.
At the tournament
- KSU 71-58 win - Elite 8
- Duke 66-59 win - Final Four
- OU 83-79 win - Championship game
When you look at the numbers above, it makes you realize how much of an improbable run KU had in '88 on its way to the Championship.
Did you see Selden's block? That kids can seriously elevate, no missing pop, IMHO, just his timing seems to be off in dunks.
If we had been asked to come up with the best possible conference scenario for KU after a few games in, could we have been able to come up with a better scenario than what we have now? I can't think of any...
I take the EJ thought it was better to punch and opponents 'nads instead of his own face?:):):)
1 "T", 3 ft by the Smurf on Steroids - Part Deux, 1 foul on Jamari that limited playing time - COSTLY
Change in momentum and gain in team chemistry - PRICELESS
Vitale is bombastic and prone to hyperbole and his bias for Duke, and also UNC, is really as or more annoying than his voice; However, he is one of the few commentators that has actually coached HS, College and the NBA and he does have a fair amount of knowledge, even when the delivery can be like nails on chalkboard. He also does a lot of work for good causes including the Dicky V foundation. He lives in Sarasota where my dad used to live so I have seen him around town a few times when I visited dad.
Bilas is pretty self-absorbed and a little too full of himself/smug and, as others have mentioned, his support for the new contact rules has turned off a lot of fans. Having said that, he is still the best of the bunch.
I like Fraschilla, He is very knowledgeable and, unlike other analysts, very familiar with KU so his comment tend to be spot on unlike others that only read the Cliff Notes version of the programs before the game and repeatedly misstate facts about the team/program.
Pants backwards used to be pretty decent but over the years has developed a bias against KU; maybe the "pants backwards" chant has had a cumulative effort.
Am I the only one that does not have a problem with Jamari's T?
To me, the "T" sent a message to the younger players that the older, bigger players had their backs. Also, the "T" ignited the crowd and the team and it went on 9-0 run that started to set some separation. I am sure Self was upset because it cost 3 points and one foul but I will guess that deep inside he was proud of Mari and how his actions brought the team together.
It reminds of one time when I was called to my son's principal's office because he had gotten in a fight at school. As it turned out, there was on older, bigger kid that kept bulling the younger kids; at recess he went after my son and his friends and was told to go away and he finally shoved a girl to the ground. This is when my son turned around and drop the kid with one punch (I had taught him some boxing) and the bully would not get up until a teacher would come to help him. At the principal's office I told my son that it was not a good thing to punch another kid, all the while I had a big grin on my face. The principal asked my son to leave the office so he could "talk" to me, and then he proceeded to tell me that I should not be smiling because the next time it happened there would be serious consequences for my son. I told him I was grinning because I was proud that my son had not only stood up to the bully but also stood up for his friend, and if it ever happened again he would not be seeing me but my attorney who would be getting his information so we could sue him personally as well the school district for allowing bulling....of course it helped that the parents of several other kids that had been bullied were waiting outside the office. He was never bullied again and at the end of the term I understand the other kid was "asked" to transfer to a different school. My kid was never bullied again and he did not get into any other fights in school.
Afterwards, I had a long talk with my son on this issue and at the end I gave him the same advice Mr. Myagi gave Julie in the Karate Kid...
Julie-san, fighting not good. But if must fight... win.
It still brings a smile to my face when I think about it 20 years later...maybe I am too much old school. I hope Coach Self will also remember it positively in the future.
The NCAA tournament is really a crap-shoot; I am as loyal KU fan as there is but KU winning in '88 was a fluke. On the other hand, there were other years when it should have won and it did not.
If you shoot pool, you know that players that concentrate on the 9 ball seldom win. Yo have to play the ball at hand and position yourself for the next one, always keeping you eye on the 9 ball, until you get to the 9 ball. If you start concentrating only on the 9 ball you will miss the ball at hand and never get to the 9 ball; this is what all the top players do.
We can extend the analogy to basketball and you play to win the game at hand and then the conference, which in turn will prepare you for the tournament and get you a high seed. Remember when UK was concentrating on the tournament and taking the regular season for granted? They ended up losing to Bobby MO in the first round of the frigging NIT. Nothing prepares you better for the tournament than a good run in your own conference. A few weeks ago Pick Pitino stated that the only reason the tournament is single elimination is to give EVERY team a chance (basically, a crap-shoot); if the format is changed to a best of X, then only the elite teams would have shot. Look at it, last year UConn was not even a top 20 team with 26-8 overall record and 12-6 conference record and with a good run in March ended up winning the title...who would have predicted it. If you don't win your own conference, how can you expect to win the national title?
He is probably unhappy because the game is not blacked out and he will not get his customary consulting fee from Time Warner...just kidding about the last part...NOT!!!
...of course, why should he worry about black outs...he has effin' court side seats!!!
I would like to think KU would not do this. KU and its fans take pride on being the cradle of basketball and hold the program to a high standard, and if KU ever did this, particularly on the down low, the fans would be up in arms. At UK, on the other hand, a program with some of the most egregious violations in college sports, they just hold their noses and look the other way.
Having said that, if it will make money and annoy the fans, Zenger probably would do it.
Maybe we will. However, you can go on those pre-season junket only every so many years, so UK will home bound next season and the experience level will be quite different where KU will have ton and UK very little...the reverse of this season.
These are the 3 better known rankings:
KenPom still has OU at #12, 2 spots ahead of KU at #14.
Massey has KU at #5 and OU at #27
Sagarin has KU #11 and OU at #18
The composite of all ranking has KU at #7 and OU at #17. Of the 40 computer rankings, as of last Sunday, only Ken Pomeroy and 5 others (BVL Least Squares, The Power Rank, T-Rank, Pigskin, Stat Fox) had OU ahead of KU. As of today, ONLY Ken Pomeroy and T-Rank have OU ahead of Oklahoma and all the others have KU ahead...that is 38 out of 40 who have KU ahead, which leaves Ken Pomeroy as a true outlier compared to all the other computer models.
With all due respect to @Jesse-Newell, I just don't see any objective way you can justify having OU ahead of KU; 38 out 40 computer models agree with me...and the NCAA RPI as well...
It paid big time. UK played 6 games in the Bahamas 2 pre-season exhibition games and two official games before KU; that is 10 games to get their act together. Ku on the other hand had 2 pre-season exhibition games and 1 official game (UCSB) for a great total of 3 games before playing UK. No wonder UK was ready and KU was not.
Next season, KU gets to practice in the summer and play international competition at the World University Games...I wish we could play them at the beginning of the season like this year...oh well...
Cal does pretty much what a pusher does, offer kids what they wants and is popular while staying one step ahead of the law.
Cal's pitch :
Cool Nike gear, playing time (even if has to platoon), celebrities like Drake visiting the locker room, LeBron attending games. World Wide Wes ATM show on call, nice digs; other financial and personal considerations he never, ever does in person but uses surrogates, so he always has plausible deniability (See UMass, Memphis), we don't expect you to stay more than one year and "you are ready for the NBA" and with our connections you will get there, we are just giving you a 1 year luxury stop on your way to the League. That was his MO at Memphis as well.
Self's pitch:
KU offers a great coaching and training staff, you will have to attend classes to play and you will have to earn your minutes, cool Adidas gear, you are not ready for the NBA but if you stick with the programs we will get you there when you are ready.
Now, if you are the typical 18 year old who thinks he is ready for the NBA and know more than the coach... which one would you pick?
ISU is averaging 70 points in conference play and in the last 3 games (2-1) they have out scored their conference opponents by a total of 3 points (2 OSU, 2 WVU, -1 BU). KU has averaged 69 points and outscored its 3 conference opponents by 42 points ( BU 1, TTU 31, OSU 10).
Defense-wise, in conference play ISU has allowed 69 ppg and KU has allowed 55 ppg.
Both teams beat OSU at home, ISU by 2 and KU by 10.
Both played Baylor away, KU won by one ISU lost by 1
P.S. Playing TTU skews the stats in KU's favor.
I was hoping to get a yes/no answer from you, but since you asked, I would say yes, he would continue to get the same recruits he gets now.
Amazing. As long as booster are paying for the other teams, not much the NCAA can do about it since the other teams are not under the jurisdiction of the NCAA. I bet there is some mighty creative accounting there. The kicker is playing overseas and not home; KU pays most non-con teams that come and play at AFH. Ohio State paid over $1M to Navy to come and play one football game at OSU. It is a big business and now, some small schools play their entire non-con on the road and earn enough money to support the entire athletic program by becoming punch bags for the bigger programs; sad but true.
Good one..:):):)
...on the other hand, they sell out their huge football stadiums and we don't sell our own not so big one. No question that Texas is football country.
MU? I could not care less; I am sure they are regretting building that new arena that is an embarrassment every time they show it on TV and is not even half full; for some games they had just over 5,000 in attendance or 1/3 full...pathetic.
...I was hoping for "yes/no" answer???
Pat Forde called...he says AFH is way overrated and the Mizzou Arena (aka "Only sold out when KU comes" Arena) is the real deal
