Florida moved the ball masterfully in the first half. It looked that in just about every possession there was Florida player wide open; it drove me nuts, and I ma sure Coach Self was not pleased either. Much like Coach Williams before him, Coach Self is a master at making half time adjustments...not many teams beat KU in the second half, UK notwithstanding.
Fair enough. He is fundamentally so sound and even when he misses the shot, the motion is text book perfect. Maybe he needs to start taking more mid-range jumpers instead of threes until he gets his confidence and rhythm As I said before, Svi is not yet a 3-point shooter. maybe in time he will be but at this time he needs to use the tools he has at hand, namely slashing and mid-range jumpers.
I like the banner that used to show up from time to time...
Yes...that just happened!!!
Or words to that effect.
The problem with Svi is consistency or more accurately the lack thereof. He is young and consistency will come in time; until such time he will be a good player but not a great one.
That is exactly how I felt.
Kentucky game plan:
- Send first team in
- Send the reinforcements
- Send the referees
The flagrant agains Texas changed the momentum. Even the announcers indicated tha should have been a charging foul since the UK player extended his arm into the defensive player forcing him to miss the ball. UK went on a big run after that and Texas could not catch up.

Much, much better second half. Selden picked a good game to break the slump. Davonte was gold from the free throw line at the end of the game.

OU beating MU by 12 in the first half...
The women's volley ball team just lost to Arkansas Little Rock. This is shaping out to be a historically bad day for KU sports. Maybe the Basketball team will wake up and show up in the second half.
This is a worse half than the second half against UK.
No defense whatsoever; Florida is wide open all the time. If KU continues to play this way, it will be lucky to finish in the top half of the conference.
The women's volley ball game is more exiting.
Beatty is now officially the new HC. Clint Bowen has agreed to stay on as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.
Harrison twins are 1/8 from the field, Texas up by 5.
Ibeh and Turner also have two fouls. On the UK side Towns and Lyles have two a piece.
It depends how the basketball team is doing, better more applause. My guess is lukewarm at best...but I could be wrong.
Tonight's game, which do you think will happen?
- Oubre plays less than 10 minutes
- Oubre plays 10 minutes
- Oubre plays more than 10 minutes
I will take option 3; I am an optimist. :smirk:
The stupid TV contract alone, IMHO, should have been enough to send him back to the Little Apple where his loyalties apparently lie anyway
Another thing that Bird could do better than any other player is to move without the ball and be at the right place and at the right time to either shoot, pass or collect a rebound, a skill that is grossly underestimated. and he was the master of it.
...this is what I do... :)
If you take a vote among KU fans all over, Bowen would have been the choice of the great majority, and he could have been signed for a relatively low contract cost with performance based incentives.
I would like to think it is not so, but I can't stop thinking that Zenger keeps thumbing his nose at all real KU fans. If Bowen ends up working for Snyder at KSU, then Zenger should be fired.
The Big 12-SEC series so far is looking good for the conference, cumulative record in parenthesis:
- Texax Tech beats Auburn (1-0)
- LSU beats WVU in hearth breaker (1-1)
- Baylor beats Vanderbilt (2-1)
- ISU trounces Arkansas (3-1)
- TCU smacks Ole Miss; TCU is much, much improved (4-1)
Today:
- Kentucky - Texas (at UK). UK favorite by 13, but if Texas bigs can neutralize UK size advantage I see it in single digits (4-2)
- Florida -KU (at KU). Florida missing its four seniors and nowhere near the team they were last year. Vegas line is KU by 7-1/2 but I see KU by double digits when you factor AFH and payback. (5-2)
- Missouri - Oklahoma (at OU). Line is 13-1/2 and I believe it will be close to that. (6-2)
Tomorrow:
- Oklahoma State - South Carolina (at USC). Line started as a pick and now is OSU by3 and it will close to that when you consider game location (7-2)
- Kansas State - Tennessee (at UT). Line started as a pick and now is UT by 2. When you factor the home advantgae, this game is truly a pick. A good game by Foster and KSU gets the win. I will predict KSU wins. (8-2)
I really don't see any scenario where the Big 12 loses the series, it is more of a question of how badly they beat the SEC. While a 8-2 final result is possible, the two games tomorrow could go either way, so most likely is 7-3 and worst and most unlikely outcome is 6-4.
I believe a lot of problems with defense last year can be attributed to the implementation of the new contact rules that penalized teams that payed hard nosed defense, such as KU, more heavily than it did teams that concentrate on offense.
FWIW, I don't believe I would ever characterize Wiggins as a ball hog; just my opinion and obviously we disagree. BTW, Wiggins was named Rookie Player of the Month in the NBA.
All the reports I have seen are based on a post by FoxSports' Bruce Feldman; The KU Athletics web site has no information on the subjects.. I understand he is in Lawrence but it might be for an in-person interview and not necessarily because he has the job.
I understand that Ed Warinner ↗ was interested and in the run.
I seriously doubt that Bowen would stay after being passed and it would not surprise me to see him end up working with Bill Snyder , who indicated the that he offered Bowen a position in his staff but was turned down.
Maybe this is what Zenger wanted in the first place
Yes, they were, and the previous time they went there Tarik got booed.
12 total fouls called on Utah and they include the 2 they had give in the last minute since WSU was not in the bonus.
Mickelson wanted out of Arkansas when Anderson came in and they would not let him off and ended up staying 2 years.
Yeap. They broke ground and it is schedule to open in 2017. It is roughly on Hwy 7 and 135th.
I don't think you can do that anymore. Refs are looking for that and with the circle under the basket, if the defensive player is outside the circle he gets the charge, if he is inside the circle is a block every time. With instant replays and multi-angle cameras, the refs get feed back fairly quickly. Where PGs have an advantage is when being guarded outside and the defensive player cannot use a hand check like they did before, if they do it is called a foul every time.
As far as blocking, Withey was special insofar as he could jump straight up and down without leaning and his timing was amazing, a result of his volley ball playing, no doubt. Look at the game a couple of years ago when Nerlens Noel had a record number of blocks and I posted pictures that showed that he was fouling while blocking in most of the plays and he was not called for that.
Endurance/stamina perhaps? The college game is considerably more physical than HS and having a defensive player bearing on you wears you out.
Florida has lost several senior and a lot of experience and it is not nearly as good as it was last year. KU has more experience than it did last year when it started 4 freshmen, is playing much better defense and the game is at the Cathedral of Basketball. Advantage KU.
WSU was way behind and went on a 14-1 run to take a 2 point lead before Utah scored to send the game into overtime. A no-foul call when Baker was smacked on the head while scoring in OT probably was the difference. Whether we like it or not, WSU is a solid team.
Th Olathe School District is first rate at ll levels. Now we have Olathe West under construction.
Unfortunately Olathe North West was recently rocked by a tragedy when two student committed suicide with days of each other. No question it was tragedy for the school, the district and the community at large.
By definition, a "cartel" is a voluntary group of "producers" (not "consumers") created with the purpose of maintaining prices at a high level and restricting competition, a de-facto monopoly if you will, so shutting off the supply does not affect them, right? They just keep on producing...and actually helps break the monopoly.
Perhaps what you would need to do shut off is the distribution to the consumer, assuming the member in question does not have its own, and this is very difficult because all it has to do is lower the price and consumers will flock and independent distributors will flourish.
Now, if you are talking about a group of consumer banded together to get a better product under more favorable terms then what you have is more of cooperative or alliance rather than a cartel, right?
Better yet, can we just have a thread in plain English without using analogies that confuse the issue?
Maybe the thread should be: Calipari cheats, we all know it, we cannot prove it, how do we stop it.
I think you are selling Perry well short. By all account in his more recent games Perry has been a lot better on defense and he is also leading the team in rebounds with 7 rpgs, as comparison, Marcus Morris averaged 7.6 rpg in his best year, Withey averaged 6.7 rpg as junior and Embiid averaged 8.0 rpg in his only season, so 7.0 rpg seems like a pretty decent rebounder for his position.
13 scholarships available,
We know for sure these 11 players have scholarships:
- 0 Frank Mason III
- 1 Wayne Selden Jr.
- 2 Cliff Alexander
- 4 Devonte' Graham
- 10 Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk
- 12 Kelly Oubre, Jr.
- 14 Brannen Greene
- 31 Jamari Traylor
- 33 Landen Lucas
- 34 Perry Ellis
- 42 Hunter Mickelson
2 out of these 4 players probably have the other 2 scholarships
- 5 Evan Manning
- 11 Tyler Self
- 15 Christian Garrett
- 22 Josh Pollard
As I indicated I believe Garret was given White's and the remaining one (Frankamp) was either given to Pollard or is still available.
It has always been my opinion that Perry will leave after he gets his degree since he is an outstanding student and his family has been supportive. Given his scholastic history, It is very possible that he can graduate in 3 years.
I am not sure that you can get a freshman OAD that would performs at the level of a senior Perry Ellis.
If you see my post, the team is allowed 13 scholarships. I am pretty sure that all players except Self and Manning are on scholarships. I think Garret might have gotten Whites scholarship and I am going to guess that Frankamp scholarship went to Pollard; no sense in leaving one unused. It is possible that technically Frankamp might still have one until the end of the semester since I believe scholarship are assigned before the semester. This is why Conner waited until his tuition and fees were paid before announcing he was leaving the team; I will guess that he is no longer living with the other Athletes? It might be somewhat weird/uncomfortable if he was still there.
Let's see if this works...

In many cases, most of the pressure comes from relatives eager to get a piece of the student-athlete earnings. In Oubre's case, I understand his parents told coach Self that Kelly is not necessarily a OAD and to do whatever is necessary to develop him as a player.
Realistically, who is going to the NBA after this season? or perhaps the better question should be who will be ready for the NBA after this season? Based on what I have seen to date, my answer to the second question would be...none.
If this is the case, and all players return what is the scholarship situation? Currently there 15 players listed.
Garret is a senior and will be gone, 14 eligible players left.
Self and Manning not using scholarship, 12 eligible players left and one scholarship available.
Pollard goes back to walk-on status not using scholarship, 11 eligible players left and two scholarship available.
If no one leaves (or transfers) there would be at most two scholarships available, is this correct or am I missing something?
Now, for every player that leaves or transfers there would an additional scholarship available.
So...who do you all think will leave for the NBA or transfer?
I imagine the volume is going to urn up quite a bit about KU in the World University Games after the NCAA Tournament; too many other news during the season.
Next year KU will have a gigantic jump on everybody, since it will be practicing for and playing in the World University games representing the US. I wonder if they will recruit some former players as allowed by rules; McLemore might be eligible since he is two years out and still taking classes at KU.
...on the other hand, Wiggins, Embiid and Selden would have started even if they were 4 year players, right?
McLemore is finally starting to come alive; his defense has always been good and it is what has kept him in the starting lineup but his offense is now clicking and we are seeing the new and improved McLemore.
On the other hand, I understand that his tattoos tell a story but I can't say I care or understand the allure of tattoos myself...to each his own, I guess... :)
I don't believe I would quite call Coach Self a OAD coach; he starts only 1 freshman, so... maybe a hybrid?
If Hunter graduates this school year, he would not be graduating early; he is already a senior so he would be graduating on schedule albeit with one year of eligibility left which would allow him to play immediately at another school. Tarik graduated in 3 years so he did graduate early.
As far as bulking up...Hunter indicated that Anderson asked him to bulk up and his stats went down all across at the heavier weight. It is true that a bigger heft will allow you to occupy more real estate and give you and additional edge in rebounding; however, rebounding is all about position and that is an area where Mickelson is very deficient. While having length helps rebounding, being in the right place is a lot more important; look at Rajon Rondo, he is one of the shorter players in his team but he is the second rebounder at 7.7 rpg, second only to Sullinger who is at 8.5 rpg. BTW, I have likened Mason to Rondo in this regard. In short, bulking up did not help Mickelson get more rebounds and negatively affected the one good part of his game.
Mickelson is not a good rebounder, scorer or overall defensive player; what he does best is block shots and that was what his off-season conditioning was supposed to improve and it did, since he apparently gained 6 inches in his vertical jump. How much he plays depends on what Coach Self determines the team needs most; if it is blocking shots and protecting the rim then he will get playing time but apparently Coach Self feels that he needs more scoring and particularly rebounding. so Lucas gets the nod. In comparison, Aldrich and Withey were great rim protectors but they could also rebound, score and draw fouls, things that Mickelson does not do.

The one thing that stuck out to me was this current KU team never stopped going to the rack even though it was futile. Why is that?
If you saw the ;press conference, Coach Self pretty much said that game plan was to penetrate and create for other players and the guards did not do a good job as they tried to score.
Here ↗ is a link to the press conference; there was question that specifically addressed this issue.
Link fixed.
Hard to move KU up since there are many capable teams sill undefeated. FWIW, KU is the highest ranked team that is not unbeaten.
The Big 12 is now ranked as the #1 conference and it is not even close. While may conferences have some very good top teams (ACC, Big 10, SEC. PAC 12) thy also have a large pool of cellar dwellers. The big 12 has only 2 teams projected to be at the bottom, TCU and Texas Tech, and TCU might actually be better than expected. Five team in the top 20 and realistically the Conference could send 8 teams to the dance. The most recent Bracketology has 7 Big 12 teams and West Virginia is not even listed and now they are a top 20 team. The conference race is going to be a gauntlet and a race for survival; a 13-5 record might win the conference.

Spot on. Much like KU in basketball, Nebraska has done a great job with its football program, even with a very limited local recruiting base.
