@drgnslayr

Joe College did take on KU, unfortunately for them, they just did not have the law on their side so KU prevailed.

Cafepress might be a KU licensee.

@HighEliteMajor

Texas and its size is going to be a challenge. We can play like we did last year in Austin (very bad) or like we did in Lawrence (very good).
If you cannot match up with their bigs inside, then trapping them and denying them position is an excellent tactic.

Ken Pom (I guess he now writes for ESPN) still has KU winning the conference...

But others such as Dino Gaudio have Texas winning the conference and Barnes as Coach of the year...

Finally we have a real and valid option.

@HighEliteMajor

I agree 100%. I am in favor of traditional designs and colors. I never understood why schools (including KU) suddenly were using black uniforms, when black is not and has never been part of the school colors. I believe @Kip_McSmithers is absolutely correct that nowadays, uniforms are designed with an eye for what is popular with younger generation, such at the Oakland Raider "outlaw black" motif that seem pretty popular with the younger generation that think the "thug culture," talk about an oxymoron, is actually a good thing.

Having said that, I really like the black with blue piping Adidas track suit Coach Self wore in New Orleans in 2012; but then, it is not a uniform. I have not been able to find it anywhere and I imagine it was available only to the basketball team.

@bskeet

This is what the licensing department does. You can write Larry Keating or Bernadette Gray-Little or any big shot at KU and regardless of who you write, I can just about guarantee that you will be directed to the Licensing Department, as I mentioned in my previous post.

KU Buckets T-Shirts β€’ Oct 21, 2014 03:22 PM

@drgnslayr

The owner of Joe College thought the same thing and yet KU prevailed.

As far as asking permission, this is what "licensing" is all about, you ask (and hopefully receive) permission to use the "art work" legally owned by the university for a fee and royalties.

If you write a letter I am 100% sure that they will direct you to the Licensing Department. Depending on the product, the university (through its licensing department and/or partner agency) will either give you permission (for a fee. i.e. "licensing" ) or deny it all together if it feels it is on poor taste or does not follow the guidelines outlined; alcohol and tobacco fall under this category. There is no way that they will let you use and art work owned by the university at no cost, otherwise, they would have every non-profit organization asking for the same exception; most likely you will have to either get a license or use one of the current licensees to produce the end product. There may be a smaller, local licensee (Kansas Sampler??) that is wiling to produce a small batch (under 100).

Lose the Chicken β€’ Oct 21, 2014 02:51 PM

@nuleafjhawk

First, you can understand that having "chicken" in the thread name will not sit well with many fans since we all see things differently; that is the beauty...and sometimes curse.. of any sports forum.

Next, I agree that the Jayhawk logos on the side are too big; the one on the "chrome" helmet is even bigger but only on one side. I too would like to see as smaller, meaner looking Jayhawk on the side of the helmet; maybe something like my avatar?

KU Buckets T-Shirts β€’ Oct 21, 2014 06:39 AM

@JayhawkRock78

Even if you give them away for free, you are getting the benefit of the exposure. You would have to license them through KU and the process is long expensive and you have to pay royalties on each item you produce.

An acquaintance of mine had a flooring business and wanted to make area rugs with big Jayhawk in the center; it took several months and had to pay several hundred dollars to process the application and he has to submit samples before getting approval, plus he had to pay a percentage of sales. as royalties. Unless you are producing large quantities, the cots is prohibitive.

So predictable...

KU Buckets T-Shirts β€’ Oct 21, 2014 02:35 AM

Unfortunately, anything with Kansas University or Jayhawk or even with the crimson and blue color and any reference to basketball would have KU lawyers all over it and there is now a precedent...just ask Joe-College.com

Nice try. Wouldn't be easier to admit you used a non-existent word by mistake instead of trying to justify the error and in the process compounding it?

To each his own as it were, not a big deal to me.

@jaybate-1.0

"octessence"??? You certainly mean quintessence, right?

@drgnslayr

Coach Self is a creature of habit and while he might try different things, he will always fall back on whats is his bread and butter (Seth Greenberg notwithstanding) which is tough defense and the Hi-Lo on offense. I know that there has been a lot of talk of dramatic position changes, such as Selden paying anywhere from PG to PF, but other than using it as a gimmick, I just don't see it being a permanent fixture.

The following quote seems particularly applicable...

** "plus Γ§a change, plus c'est la mΓͺme chose"- Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr **

"the more it changes, the more it's the same thing", usually translated as **"the more things change, the more they stay the same," **

SMASH BALL β€’ Oct 20, 2014 06:38 PM

@nuleafjhawk

I can see KU playing physical but "smash ball" to me brings images of Big 10 basketball where the games sometimes resemble football games and take away from the beauty of the sport. Maybe I am old fashioned in this regard.

@HighEliteMajor

I can see that but I would think that Mason at 5'11" plays PG and Graham at 6'2" plays either SG or combo guard but I do not see it going the other way.

@drgnslayr

I just don't see Mason playing any position other than PG, maybe Graham but not Mason.

Tarik Black β€’ Oct 20, 2014 02:13 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

McHale was a tough player that was always hustling and he likes similar players. Interesting that Tarik left KU with a reputation exactly opposite of the one he came with...a very positive development that endeared him to KU fans, including me, that were not sure how well he would do under Coach Self.

During a "normal" season, I expect KU to make it to the Sweet 16. A first round loss is a major disappointment, a second round loss a minor disappointment; advancing to the Sweet 16 is the minimum expected outcome, any thing beyond that is as bonus. Of course, depending on the team, some losses can be more disappointing than others, such as the 2011 loss to VCU, when KU had an easy path to the finals, and some wins more rewarding, such as the 2012 run to the finals.

Crash...a metaphor for Tubby's current career status...

News Headlines week of 10/15 β€’ Oct 19, 2014 11:52 PM

@jaybate-1.0

This the player about whom you wrote:

"I would argue that unless Frank, Conner and Svi offer sharply greater net benefit, then I would rather go with a great athlete like Selden for a year's development, so that you wind up with something truly extraordinary the following season."

Do you believe now that he is going to the NBA after this season? Just curious...

Maybe the team is not yet winning but you can see where it is competitive. It had a chance to beat OSU (outscored OSU by 6 in the 2nd half) and stayed close at Tech (lost the 2nd half by 3 points) until close to the end. Hopefully one of these days the close games will turn into wins.

@HighEliteMajor

I would not pay much attention to that mock draft; heck, most of the 2015 one and done have yet to decide where they will play and that will dictate go goes and who stays.

As far as Greene, he played so little that many of his turnovers are amplified (some of his passes to the bench were real boners) since we have so little to go by. You are right, Coach Self has made it clear that he is going back to the style that has been so successful for him and it starts with hard nose defense. The change in the foul rules last season wreaked havoc with Coach Self style of play, but one season and one off-season later to adapt, I will guess that KU will go back to being a top defensive team first.

"The team with a great defense coupled with a good offense will almost always defeat the team with a good defense and a great offense." - Forrest Clare "Phog" Allen

@HighEliteMajor

I am starting to think that the 3-point shooters at KU look better on paper than they do on the court. Remember last year when we thought we had a bunch of players that could shoot the 3? Well, most of those did not pan out

Last season the best 3 -point shooter on the team was Ellis (.471), followed by Tharpe (.377) and then Wiggins (,341), and Ellis did not shoot enough from the outside to be considered an outside threat; I am hoping that he will do more outside shooting this season. BTW, only Ellis is coming back. I understand that arguably the best two shooters on the team are Frankamp and Green but it does KU no good if they cannot get playing time. Green shot .333 from 3 but he made only 10 of 30 while racking up 15 TOs and getting burnt on defense so much that his nickname should be "toast;" these numbers will not get you time in the rotation. Since the '08 team, we really have not had a team with strong, reliable 3-point shooting; it has been pretty much hit and miss and we have depended on inside scoring, which is Coach Self's preferred approach anyway, With out lack of size inside, the outside shooting becomes more important and I am hoping that Selden and Oubre will be the outside shooters since I am not sure how much playing time Greene and Frankamp will get. Svi is a big unknown,

Wichita state-vomit! β€’ Oct 18, 2014 05:01 PM

@KUSTEVE

I understand not liking him personally or what he says. I get that and I feel pretty much the same way as do most KU fans. However, putting him down as a coach is silly. Marshall is almost universally acknowledged to be a top 10 coach and he could be coaching at a much bigger program (such as UCLA) if he he wanted to. Keep in mind that the last two season WSU had arguably better season than KU and finished both seasons ranked higher; you just don't do this unless you have a very good coach.

@jaybate-1.0

Ellis, Alexander and Mickelson are three bigs in the rotation inside.

I have been saying all along that Mickelson will get PT over Lucas; however, based on Coach Self's recent comments, looks like Lucas is farther ahead and in the lead for PT over Mickelson. BTW, where does Traylor fit? He is the guy that brings energy (according to the players) and no way he is left out.

Royals v O's game 4 β€’ Oct 18, 2014 05:16 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

I saw part of the game and at one time Chalmers and Rush were both in the court, although Rush did not play much and left early with a back spasm. It will be interesting to see if Mario regains his starting spot; it would be tough for him not to start after being the starting PG for the NBA Dream Team that won two championships; he did play well in the game, no doubt the crowd provide a much needed pick me up.

Ranking the Big 12 Coaches. β€’ Oct 17, 2014 05:13 PM

@nuleafjhawk

No worries. This is what the forum is for...

Coach Self is just jacking with us and some are making mountains out of molehills. He has group of very talented players that also happen to be very versatile and he is just thinking aloud about potential match ups that he might occasionally use. Yes, he might play Selden at the PG or PF or play other players off-position, but if this happens, it is going to be brief and not the norm.

IMHO, this is going to be the lineup and depth:

PG - Mason, Graham Frankamp

SG -Selden, Frankamp, Svi

SF - Oubre, Greene, Ellis, Svi

PF - Ellis, Traylor

PF/C - Alexander, Lucas, Mickelson

The line between PF and Center is pretty blurry nowadays and the line between SG and SF can be blurry and the players interchangeable as well.

Like I said, there will be times when he switches to a fully unconventional line up, but 95% of the time, the line up above will be it. It is really that simple...at least it is to me.

Big Dipper β€’ Oct 17, 2014 04:52 PM

@drgnslayr

The record for NBA players for the "Sargent" test is 38" by Dwayne Mitchell in 2012 and the record with run up approach is 45.5" by none other than former KU player Kenny Gregory. The 48" attributed to Jordan is not a "Sargent"jump but one with a running start and it was never documented. A lot has been written about vertical jumping, particularly about and by NBA players, but most of it falls in the category of urban legends and very little has been documented. In recent years, the NBA combines have done a better job of measuring and documenting athletes numbers and this is how we know that some of the numbers attributed to some athletes are just fantasy.

Why Can't Selden Be a Good PG? β€’ Oct 17, 2014 06:03 AM

@HighEliteMajor

Spot on. I have been saying all along that to get to the next level you need an elite PG; I even started a thread about bigs and smalls and in my opinion, the PG was the key. A PG that cannot dribble is by definition not a PG but a SG or even a SF. To be an elite PG, a player must be a superior dribbler as well, as you so eloquently outlined in your post.

@jaybate-1.0

Schools were not lining up to talk to Tubby after he left UK and he took the only available job. After Minnesota, even fewer school were willing to give him a chance and this is how he ended up a Texas Tech., not a prime college basketball destination which along with TCU, is at the bottom of the conference prestige wise. I just don't see him getting a position at a bigger, more prestigious program in the near future.

Ranking the Big 12 Coaches. β€’ Oct 17, 2014 05:39 AM

@nuleafjhawk

I have always indicated that my first choice would be Brad Stevens; however, Hoiberg would not be a bad choice. Having said that, it would be highly unusual for a coach to move to another conference school, and even more difficult for him to leave his Alma Mater. KU could do a lot worse than Hoiberg and I can think of maybe a couple of other coaches I would pick over him; obviously I think he is the real deal.

Big Dipper β€’ Oct 17, 2014 05:32 AM

@drgnslayr

Vertical jumping is one of those things that starts easy but it gets exponentially more difficult with every inch. Most NBA players can dunk on a 10' regulation basket which means most can reach at least 11 feet. However, with every additional inch, it becomes increasingly more difficult and fewer player can reach the new height until it gets to a point where just a handful of superior leaper can do it. At this point it looks like the limit is around 12'6" with a running start and I would venture to guess that less than 5 players in the NBA can get there.

28-8 is better record than KU had last year and better than KU's record in 5 of the last 11 years; also, ISU beat KU in the Conference tournament last season, right? Keep in mind that winning big at ISU is more difficult than winning at one of the elite programs...just sayin'

I believe Hoiberg is the real deal.

Why Can't Selden Be a Good PG? β€’ Oct 16, 2014 09:51 PM

@jaybate-1.0

No team in its right mind would draft Selden to play PF or even SF; Wayne is natural SG and that is where he would play in the NBA. It really does not make any difference what position a player plays in college, the position that he will play in the NBA is dictated by his build and talent and Selden is the stereotype 2. Frankamp is a better 3 point shooter than Selden or Releford and the chances that he will play in the NBA are extremely small; he is not fast/athletic enough to play PG even in college and not big enough to play SG .

Much like Ellis, Releford is what the NBA calls tweeners, that is players that are in-between two position and typically play one in college but cannot play their more natural position in the pros and cannot make it to the league. Ellis has the mentality and moves of a PF but he just does not have the build and power to play PF in the NBA, and the SF is his more natural position and the one he would play in the NBA, provided he can develop a consistent outside shot and can increase his lateral speed to guard the athletic NBA SFs. Same thing with Chalmers, he was a turnover machine in college when he tried to play PG and was switched to SG, but to play in the NBA he had to learn to play PG because that is his more natural position; it did help that he was good 3-point shooter. By the way, Norris Cole is now the starting PG at Miami and Chalmers is coming off the bench.

As I said, Selden is already a 35% 3 point shooter and he will only get better; he will play SG in the NBA, regardless of what he plays at KU. Keep in mind that in college, players are drafted based on talent/potential and coaches will take the highest ranked player even if they have other players at the same position, and later they will get shuffled to fill team needs. If the team needs a SF and none is available, then the coach will move either a SG or a PF to that position. In the NBA, on the other hand, players are drafted or acquired at any time to fill specific needs; if a SF is needed the team will either draft one or trade for one and seldom play a player outside his natural position...they can do this because they can draft/trade/buy players at any time; college teams cannot.

Specifically answering your question: Selden 3 point average will improve this season and he will get drafted and play SG in the NBA.

@jaybate-1.0

2)Tubby-ring at UK and some pretty good teams there, but foolishly went to UMinn

He did not as much "foolishly" left for Minnesota as he was given the choice of resigning or getting fired. He did not make a Final Four in his last 9 seasons at UK, the longest stretch in the program's history, and fans were placing "For Sale" sign on his front lawn.

He inherited a programs from Pitino that was 69-7 or .907 and 29-3 or .906 in conference, in the previous two yeas and in his last two years before leaving for Minnesota he was 44-25 or 0.638 and 18-14 or 0.56 in conference, not a record that UK fans would accept any more than KU fans would.

His record at Minnesota was a pedestrian 124-81 or 0.605 and 46-62 or 0.426 in conference; his record at Texas Tech. is even worse. Again, I think he is way overrated.

I am curious as to why you think he is better than all the conference except for Coach Self?
