Tharpe Exits: "Addition By Subtraction" • May 02, 2014 05:23 AM

Anyone that has had sick child knows he would do anything to be near the child and do whatever can to help. If this is the case, I am sure the NCAA will grant a hardship waiver and allow him to play closer to home.

Naa has been a loyal Jayhawk and has been an integral part of the team's success over the last 3 years. Regardless of how many in this Forum feel, let's not forget that we are losing our most experience point guard and one of who could have come back next season as a much improved player. I hope there is a positive outcome for him and his family and that he finds success wherever he lands; hopefully we will not have to face him in the NCAA.

@DoubleDD

That is a pretty harsh thing to say about Coach Snyder. I could understand you wishing he retires, but pass away?

I have nothing but respect for Coach Snyder; he is and has always been a class act and college football could use more coaches like him.

Last Myles Turner Comments • Apr 29, 2014 04:37 PM

If you like Isaiah Austin you will love Turner. They are booth very tall players that prefer to play at the top of the key and hit 3s rather that bang inside. Austin did OK at Baylor but he really did not separated himself from the field; it would be interesting to know how he would have fared had he chosen KU.

Mixed emotions on Anderson as MU Coach • Apr 29, 2014 04:25 PM

MU has the resources and the money to hire a top tier coach but, IMHO, they hit a single when a home run was needed.

A program that chose Snyder over Self obviously does not have the vision or desire to become an elite program. They are happy with their football program and basketball apparently is not priority.

He has had Gregg Popovich as his mentor. He ended his career at San Antonio and was hand picked by Popovich to be his assistant, so he obviously must have seen something in him and I think that with decent personnel he could be very successful; he is a bright individual. I think he would be a leading contender when Self retires, no question about it.

@nuleafjhawk

The Orlando Magic, the house Dwight Howard built...and tore down. Have you seen the Magic roster? Hard to win with a team where the two top players are Arron Afflalo and Jameer Nelson and their top PF is Kyle O'Quinn (he of Norfolk State beats MU fame), and whose entire payroll is less than the combined salary of James and Wade .

Considering the players he has, it is amazing the Magic win any games at all.

@Crimsonorblue22

The NBA playoffs have been ubber-competitive this year. Lots of overtime games and lots of wins by visiting teams...an a lot of very physical play. I guess there is a lot more parity in the League now.

Big Man U? • Apr 27, 2014 06:48 PM

@JRyman

The Ewing, Mourning, Matumbo bunch is very impressive; however, they are all retired. To the best of my recollection, the only Georgetown players currently playing in the NBA, that can be considered bigs, are Monroe and Hibbert.

@ralster

My first choice would be Brad Stevens and I don't agree with the not able to recruit part. For a small school like Butler, he did extremely well. Butler does not get the the A-list players, they get what is left after the elite programs have had their pick. At a program like KU he would be competing for and getting top players.

Fran Martin off the court is a really classy individual who cares deeply about his players. His on court persona is not representative of the real Frank Martin.

@Virgil_Caine

Harden wanted superstar pay and OKC is/was already paying the max to Durant and Westbrook and they wold have busted the salary cap even higher with the corresponding penalty. When you factor Ibaka's and Perkins' salaries, OKC just could not afford that many highly paid players; after all, OKC is a very small market and does not get the added revenue that teams in big markets such as the Lakers get.They should have gotten rid of Perkins instead, who I believe is one of the more overpaid players in the league, but I will guess his contract prevented that.The trade did allow OKC to shed some players it was not using (including Aldrich) and get some players and draft picks in return. Keep in mind that if OKC did not trade Harden they would lost him to free agency,

There is no way Oklahoma fires Scott Brooks; he is one the better younger coaches in the NBA and has done a great job with the Thunder.

The whole story started with a tweet from Westbrooke's brother which was promptly erased. Kietzman is a moron that will take anything that could negatively affect KU and make it into a big deal; I would not pay too much attention to anything, KU related, he says.

That is no-brainer, Davonte Graham.

Fair enough...the stars and the Easter bunny are aligning themselves with KU, better? :)

Why It Is Vital We Land Myles Turner... • Apr 25, 2014 10:22 PM

I believe UK has 14 players and 13 scholarships...so, who get his scholarship pulled? In view of the twins coming back, do any of the incoming players asks to be released?

Big Man U? • Apr 25, 2014 09:57 PM

@truehawk93

Dang...and all this time I thought he was a soccer fan of the Manchester United or Man U as it is commonly referred...:)

@Crimsonorblue22

I guess it depends on what he wants to do. If he wants immediate success, the KU is the logical destination; however, he will have to earn the position since we have several big coming back. His game is similar to to Isaiah Austin in so far as he prefers to play facing the basket and likes to shoot 3s; it could work well with Alexander down low and Turner up high.

SMU might work well for him; outstanding coaching and one of the premier play makers will also be joining a team that barely missed the tournament. He would be an immediate contributor at SMU.

I don't believe that Texas would be a good fit for him; they have several established bigs coming back and Texas has not had the success that KU has had, even when they had superior players such as Aldridge and Durant.

It was prescription medicinal marijuana for pain. Sounds like EJ's shot was harder than we thought and still stings; he has not been the same man since then.

Big Man U? • Apr 25, 2014 07:24 PM

@VailHawk

Typically centers and forwards, at least PFs, are considered bigs, although some also include SFs.

To the best of my recollection, the name was started locally after Danny Manning took an actual coaching position at the end of the 2006-2207 season and fans presumed he would coached the bigs.

Players considered bigs since then include: Arthur, Khan, Jackson, Wright, Kleinmann, Aldrich, the Morris twins, Withey, Robinson and Wesley. All except Kleinmann (and of course Wesley) have played professionally in the NBA except Khan which chose to play in Russia where he makes a lot more money.

Again, this is just my recollection and others might remember differently.

@Crimsonorblue22

Yes, and now Texas has all its available scholarships taken.

Why It Is Vital We Land Myles Turner... • Apr 25, 2014 06:56 PM

@truehawk93

With that signing UT has all scholarships taken. To sign Turner, one player would have to go off scholarship or transfer and it is getting late in the process to find schools with open scholarships.

Aldridge went 1-2 against KU in his two years at UT. UT finished 5th in his first year and tied for 1st with KU in his second losing to KU in the Big 12 Tournament final.

Durant went 0-2 against KU in his one year at UT, finished 3rd in the conference and lost to KU in the Big 12 Tournament final.

Aldridge and Durant are a combined 1-4 against KU; Turner is much better off playing at KU if he wants to win.

@drgnslayr

UK is going to be taller than most NBA teams...

UK lineup... ↗

Let's not lose track that all these loses hurt, and many if not most are considered upsets, because KU is such a good program. If KU was middle-of- the-road program these loses would not be considered upsets, would not sting as much, we would be glad we made it to the tournament in the first place and would not be talking about them at at all; in fact, this forum would not even exist. Every other elite program has a comparable or much larger list. If you think our loses are bad, they don't look so bad when compared to UK and its band of superstars losing to Bobby Mo in the opening game of the NIT; now, that is embarrassing.

Let's be happy that we have such good program where every loss is an upset and stings...after all, how many other programs can say the same thing?

Let's not forget the Battle of New Orleans and 1 point loss Wichita State. Luckily the last time we played them we beat hem by 49 points.

One painful loss was that to Texas-El Paso when JoJo's shot was disallowed and UTEP went to beat UK in the NCAA title game. That UTEP teams was later portrayed in the movie Glory Road, a movie rife with inaccuracies.

@Kip_McSmithers

I don't believe he is considering UK, regardless of what that site may indicate. He is down to 7 schools, KU, Duke, Texas, SMU, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Oklahoma State.

Now, if both twins leave, UK would have one spot open, but they also had one available last year after Kyle Wiltjer left in the summer; probably one of the walk-ons got a one year scholarship, much like KU has done in the past when one was available after all the recruiting was done.

Former KU players • Apr 23, 2014 08:40 PM

@Virgil_Caine

I agree on all your points. Kirk has been a fan's favorite for a long time and they loved that he came back to Chicago. He did get a technical earlier in the game and was in some foul trouble, which explains his below average playing time.

@Kip_McSmithers

The graph is confusing to read but as far as I can tell, and with only Randle and Young leaving, they have 14 players on scholarship, which means one will have to go, unless one or more additional players opt for the draft.

We all knew you were kidding, so was I. Brady toiled in the D-League for a couple of years and at times he did very well and at other times not so well. Obviously he did not do the good things consistently to warrant a call to the NBA; Europe seems more suited to his game.

Happy Easter • Apr 21, 2014 06:39 PM

@truehawk93

18 players were in the roster, 13 scholarships available.

Five players did not have scholarships, Wesley, Manning, Self, Roberts and Garret. Wesley and Roberts are now gone an the remaining three will not use up scholarships.

Three players with scholarships left, Wiggins Embiid and Black so there were three scholarships available; two will be taken by Alexander an Oubre leaving just one available.

Unless, unbeknown to us,Tharpe has graduated and he is granted a release to play his senior year elsewhere, there is no way he would transfer and sit one year just to play one more year, particularly when he is the incumbent PG and the position is his to lose. Even if he loses the starting position, he will still play substantial minutes.

Traylor, Lucas and Michelson have already used up their red shirt year so they are not going anywhere either since they would use a full year of eligibility. Ellis and Frankamp are Kansas boys whose dream was to play for KU; Ellis is the top player returning and Frankamp has nowhere to go but up; they are not transferring either. Selden is the top prospect coming back and likely will be the featured player; he is not going anywhere.

The walk-ons, Self, Manning and Garret are not taking up scholarships so they are not part of the conversation. . Mason will be smack in the PG battle so I just don't see him going anywhere which leaves Greene and White as the only potential transfers; red-shirting would not help as red-shirt players still take up a scholarship.

So, If Coach Self signs 2 more players, one of the current players with scholarship would have to transfer or go off scholarship. There is no getting around the 13 scholarship limit; interesting that Division I women basketball programs can offer 15 scholarships.

NBA Finally Listening to HighEliteMajor • Apr 20, 2014 05:11 PM

@wissoxfan83

The only current limitation is that the student athlete must be 19 years old and one year removed from his graduating class. There is no restriction on what he does or where he plays until the athlete meets those requirements.

An athlete can chose to play in Europe, as several have done, provided he finds a team that will hire him, or he can play in the Development League or he can sit out and do nothing, if he chooses to do so. There is absolutely no requirement to attend college, although most athletes believe it is the best way to not only improve their game but also get exposure that money can't buy...and if they find out they are not ready or good enough to play in the NBA, they can stay in college until they are ready or get a degree, both good things.

Alexander was the MVP fort West and Okafor for the East. Two of the more memorable plays of the game were Alexander's block of Okafor and Alexader's dunk of the backboard. Mudiay had also a nice dunk. Oubre also did great on his way to 24 points. The KU recruits combined for 47 points and 13 rebounds. Alexander also had 5 blocks.

Haith to Tulsa? • Apr 19, 2014 03:17 PM

@icthawkfan316

You and ralster nailed. Miami was happy to see Haith leave since he did not have a single conference winning record in six years.

It was mentioned that he had good mentors but this alone does not make you a good coach. He had one good season at MU with Anderson's players and after that, and with well above average talent, he clearly underperformed. He is obvioulsy better suitedas a coach at a small program and not a Division I program where he has not really had much success.

List of transfers... • Apr 18, 2014 08:45 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Some coaches require that the transferring player does not go to another conference school. It is a controversial area and has gotten some coaches bad publicity for imposing too many conditions.

I see Turner's game a lot along the lines of Isaiah Austin at Baylor, a tall, skinny player that prefers to play outside and can hit the 3. He might work well with Alexander playing Hi-Low game Coach Self favors.

Not really news but, Parker leaving Duke • Apr 18, 2014 02:57 PM

@JRyman

I believe your comment on Tharpe is extremely harsh. I do not think for a second that he "brought shame to the family" as you indicated. Yes, he finished the season on low note but the kid, like all other players, played his heart out. He was instrumental in other wins earlier and was shooting great from the three; once he started passing open shots, his game started to suffer; it is possible that his wrist injury had a lot to do with that. I believe he can work on the weak part of his game over the summer and come back as productive player next season.
