My nephew who lives in the Washington DC area, is studying journalism and wants to be a sports reporter and follow the Nationals tells me Gutierrez is a really good prospect and the pitcher, Morel, is very young (17 years old) and very promising. Could end up being a pretty good trade. Hopefully @approxinfinity can provide more details.

On related news, Perry Ellis will be playing for the Milwaukee Bucks in the Summer League and hopefully earns a roster spot.

Only 2 former MU players (Carroll, Clarkson currently in the NBA and neither slated to play. Most of the big names are KU players and I expect the audience to be pro KU.

@BShark

Judgment call for the ref and if he determines the hand was intentional then it is an automatic red card. If the player is facing the ball and the arm is not tight against the body it will always be called, although apparently there was an almost identical play in the previous World Cup (by a Netherlands player???) that was not called.

World Cup Odds • Jun 19, 2018 02:06 PM

@BShark

When you start the game 1 goal and one man down it is uphill the rest of the way, even more so at a World Cup level. Colombia still was the better team but they seemed to be happy with a tie and stopped attacking and cost them the game.

Very unusual from an endorser to say something like this, at least while the contract is in effect or in this case when it just started. I am sure Puma will not be happy.

Silvio • Jun 18, 2018 09:44 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

Always? Really? And you are always free not to read my posts.

Having said that, don't you see the similarities in both indictments?

Silvio • Jun 18, 2018 08:02 PM

@jaybate-1.0

Unfortunately the government does it all the time ↗. Manafort was indicted for the alleged crimes of money laundering and tax evasion that happened in 2005 and 2007 and more than 10 years before Trump declared his candidacy and with clear intent of having him come up with information damaging to Trump. Mueller even had to judge shop since one already told him these crimes had nothing to do with the scope of the current investigation.

The expression a grand jury can indict a ham sandwich was coined to illustrate how a prosecutor can get a grand jury to indict just about anyone.

It is not my intent to introduce politics into this thread but simply to illustrate the similarities of the two investigations/indictments.

Puma signs Bagley, looks to sign others • Jun 18, 2018 06:48 PM

@BShark

Puma has indicated they will be signing more "fresh out of college" players with high upside paying them more than the going rate for a rookie but considerably less than what they would have to pay an established player and having them grow along with the brand. Interesting strategy.

The Converse brand sell very well for Nike so I don't see it selling it.

Silvio • Jun 18, 2018 06:40 PM

@HighEliteMajor

KU has gone out of its way to be careful and proactive when dealing with this type of situations as shown by not playing Diallo, Alexander and Preston even when the NCAA did not indicate they could not play. The NCAA did not officially notify KU at all that Alexander or Preston were not eligible both neither of them played after the potential/possibility of a violation was raised.

Silvio's guardian still proclaims he was not paid and until there s proof he was then it is all allegations.

At this point I don't know what to make of the FBI indictment; it is certainly in the realm of possibility that it jumped the gun before it had all its ducks in a row and now it is running into problems trying to prove the case. Doesn't it surprise you that if the allegations were true and the FBI had Sean Miller on tape we would have heard more about it and he would be out of a job? Instead, we have not heard anything else...and Miller is still coaching.

I see a lot of similarities with the Mueller Grand Jury. They indicted 13 individuals and 3 entities(including one that did not even exist when it allegedly committed the crime) and when defendants requested a speedy trial, Muller asked the Judge not to grant it because it did no have the case ready and when the defendant's lawyers asked for all new evidence they were told there was none, which would appear to indicate it the indictment was a fishing expedition to turn some of the defendants to get information and so far has not worked. The NCAA case appears to be similar insofar as the indictment seems to have been issued with the purpose of turning accused individuals and getting them to provide evidence and it has not happened. Without a conviction or at least the start of a trial, the NCAA would open itself to potential liability if it prevents an individual, presumed to be innocent, from playing college ball and potentially causing irreparable harm to his career.

Puma sponsorship of World Cup teams went from 8 in 2014 to only 2 in 2018; quite a drop. It has had some success signing entertainment celebrities like Jay-Z and Rhiana and perhaps they feel that basketball has a better outlook than soccer even when Nike, Adidas and Under Armour have a tight grip in that sport.

I did not say he had a big ego but like many other players he had his circle of “advisors” filling his head with ideas and telling him he should move to play pro ball when he was not quite ready. Not the first player to do this and he will not be the last.

Last year, Calipari coached the U19 team that included several college players and lost a critical game to Canada in the semi-finals but won the rest by a lot. Coach Self is coaching the U18 team that does not include any college players.

I understand KU has very strict controls in place top monitor academic performance; players have been suspended for games before when they did not perform academically.

In Vick's case, I believe he just got a big head and an inflated idea of his own talent and got a dose of reality after burning bridges.

He was listed as a PF in HS and I just don't see him playing guard although he did play guard for a few minutes in the Oregon HS title game against Kevin Love's team (Lake Oswego?) when the PG fouled out but prior to that he was matched against Love. I see a big with ball handling ability bringing up the ball after a defensive rebound but not a guard. Have you seen Kevin Durant play? Often when he gets a rebound he brings the ball up court himself and no one will call him a guard. He was listed and played PF for Duke and he is listed as SF in the NBA. We just agree to disagree.

No More Blocking Transfers • Jun 14, 2018 07:18 PM

Many points are missed or misinterpreted.

First, we have to differentiate between the capable student athlete that wants to go to college, get a degree while getting a free ride and then move on with his life and the elite athlete that wants to bide his time until he can move on to make money playing the sport and has no desire to graduate and college is a necessary nuisance in the way of a pro career.

I would say that with occasional exception, players that go to Division 2 or 3 schools have really no intention or a realistic shot at making it to the pros so we can safely say these student athletes just want to get a degree with as little debt as possible and really have little in common with the OAD.

The great majority of players that go to Division I schools are pretty much the same as above, they want to get a degree and move on with their lives and sometime they try to move up to a better program, not necessarily because it gives them a shot to pro sports, but because it is the highest level they will ever play and after that they are done.

At the other end we have the elite players that have a set goal, sometimes unrealistic, to move to pro sports as soon as possible. The NBA drafts 60 players every year and a few more get contracts and when you consider the influx of foreign players, maybe 10-20 have a good shot at a career in the NBA and 30-50 will get a shot to the top league. Add another 50 that will play overseas and you have maybe 100 players every year. When you consider there are 351 Division I programs and over 5,000 players, less than 2% of the players are really trying to dictate terms, change the system and ruin it for the other 98% that just want to attend college and play ball while getting a degree.

I am all in favor of doing away with the NBA one year wait...and OADs...and adopting the baseball model of staying in college of waiting at least 3 years if they decide to go to college in the first place; this benefits both athletes and the schools. Yes, we would miss the one year phenoms but I believe the overall product would be equal or actually better.

I am with @HighEliteMajor 100% on this. Presumed OADs and elite athletes have options other than college and if they don't like the rules in place, they do not have to go to college.

How often are scholarships for players that came in with one are actually pulled in basketball? Coaches recruit over current players all the time but the end result is usually lack of playing time and not necessarily a loss of scholarship. The only recent players at KU that, as far as we can tell but don’t really know for a fact, had scholarship pulled are Giddens, Tharpe and maybe Greene and Bragg and all 3 were due to non-team related events.

I will guess that the majority of transfers are due to players wanting to leave hoping for more playing time and not necessarily having a scholarship pulled.

I will be watching. Brazil is always a favorite and always has talent but it is not always used correctly (see Brazil 2014), Germany is always solid and a true contender, Spain had for many years the best team but it is somewhat down now but still a great team, France and Belgium have very good teams with a decent shot to win it all. Argentina had great talent and the players have been together for a while and has a decent but not a great shot, same with Uruguay and Colombia. The rest are longer shots and the only other team with a shot is Russia who has the home advantage which can be considerable.

In short, if I had to list the top candidate teams in order I would go Brazil, Germany, France and Belgium. All the rest are one step below.

Spectrum Sports ↗) is what used to be Metro Sports and carried the KU games that were blacked out thanks to #*%@ Zenger. It is now carried by Charter/Spectrum/TW as well as Comcast and Midco. I believe the contract runs through at least part of 2018, after that who knows, probably ESPN3 until the new AD sets up a new contract.

Midco ↗) is a subsidiary of Midcontinent Media and providesh internet/cable/phone services in limited areas including Lawrence, Kansas; if I understand correctly, the parent company is Comcast.
