Here is another close encounter ↗ of the snake kind....
Both JRE and Hurt are natural college PFs but I have seen a few publications that list Hurt as a SF. I will guess that Hurt can play SF or stretch PF in college. Big Dave and Hurt would be a nice front line with Big Dave staying inside and Hurt stepping out to hit the 3.
Perry shot 37-60, 0.617 in HS. Perry was always able to hit the 3.
KU had two of the best 3-point shooters ever in HS in Greene and Frankamp...how did it work out for KU? I will take a top 20 guard over a sub 75-100 3-point shooter. Chances are you have a better chance improving the shooting of an already elite athlete easier than improving the overall game of a sub 75-100 player.

@JayHawkFanToo Perry didn’t shoot 3’s like hurt does
Perry did not take as many shots because that was not his role on the team and he played primarily inside until pretty much his senior year when he was allowed to step outside and hit the long shot; however, he was a very good 3 point shooter.
- FR - 2-3, .0667
- SOPH - 8-17, 0.471
- JR - 18-46, 0.391
- SR - 28-64 0.438
Career - 56- 130, 0.431
I can’t say I have seen Hurt play much other than highlights but he sounds a lot like Perry Ellis did in HS. Interesting, Future 150 list athleticism as one of his strengths. ↗
He did score 20 points so hard to complain. He did have a decent form in HS so I imagine his shot will get better even when he is really at his best when driving inside.
I showed the chicken coop to my granddaughter and her comment was...don’t KU rivals call KU chickenhawks? Do you really want to see AFH as a chicken coop?...she might have a point...🤔
My post was response to your statement:
It’s same issue with soccer in this country. Soccer is at best the 4th most popular sport in this country which is why the US has always struggled to compete against world powers and and significant factor in why the US failed to qualify for the World Cup this year.
The fist part is correct (but changing) the second is not. I wrote the reason why the US did not qualify for the current cup and now competes with the world power and has recent wins against England, Germany and Italy among others. more kids 6-17 are now playing soccer than any other sport and its popularity is only going to increase. Just my opinion, obviously, but with lots of stat to back it up.
Now, back to basketball...
Soccer in America is already well established and doing well and continues to grow and the level is very good. Look at the record against Mexico, the strongest team on North American and a traditional top 10-15 world power, it is 33–18–14 (W–L–T) overall in Mexico's favor; however, during the last 18 years the record is 13–6–5 (W–L–T) in favor of the US including a win at Azteca Stadium where the US had never beat Mexico before...this is real progress.
Since 1990, US has qualified for the World Cup 7 times in a row and has been ranked in the top 25 every time except 1 and as high as #8. No question that the US was a legitimate top 20 team until this upcoming tournament. Here is a summary...
!0_1528831952112_upload-dc603d0d-41e9-4fb4-9a91-ca51993be46b ↗
The other thing that US is doing that is different than the rest of the world is using very young players (early 20s) and dismissing the older players (late 20s and older). Look at the top 100 players in the world ↗ and you will see that the majority are over 30 years, same thing with most national teams.
Agreed with the popularity of basketball in Panama. Disagree with the status of soccer here. The US has been consistently ranked in the top 25 in the world (currently 25th in the FIFA rankings out of 206 national teams) for a while now and the women's national team is ranked #1 in the world now. The failure to make it to the current World Cup is not because of a lack of talent but because of the politics in USA soccer that have kept some of the better players off the national team. It started when Jurgen Klinsmann was hired as coach and started to bring German/Euro players playing in Europe who could also claim American citizenship instead of selecting and rewarding local talent and it came to a head when he cut Landon Donovan from the team, a player that was still not only very capable and experienced at national and international levels but had also been the leader of the team for many years. The team did not qualify for the current edition of the World Cup for the first time in a long time.
More kids 6-17 play soccer now than any other sport. The Sporting KC sells out the stadium for every game and the tickets are not cheap either. The MSL is doing very well.
Enough of soccer, back to basketball...
I believe it was posted here before that the knock on Dedric is that he cannot jump very high which would be a big disadvantage against the bigger PFs.
I just finished reading a couple of stories on Dedric that indicated that if he were not listed at 6'9" he might be playing the 3 instead of the 4 and no one would be surprised. I also saw a few draft prediction where he is actually listed at 6'8" with shoes and 230 Lbs. so he is pretty close in size to Lightfoot and many have commented that Mitch could be playing the 3.
If Dedric and/or Ligthfoot can reliably hit the 3 then I could see where either could really play SF and let the really big guys play up front. Coach Self mentioned that he sees Silvio more as PF than a Center so he could play Doke and Big Dave at Center, Silvio at PF and Dedric alternating between PF and SF, same as Lightfoot. A lot of flexibility/overlap and lot of talent at all positions; maybe Coach Self will come with scheme we have not seen before...it should be fun.
I really felt bad for the Panamanian team. Some of the smaller countries should really reconsider sending teams to competitions of this level. Yes, it is an experience for the kids but not necessarily a good one as the team was truly embarrassed by a much superior opponent; hopefully they will do better against weaker competition.
45-0 run to start the game...if you can even call it a game. 118-26 final score.
Supporting cast for Anthony at UK >>>>>> supporting cast for Bamba at Texas...and much better coaching as well...and better facilities...and better audience...and better exposure...
Technically, LeBron can go to any othre team but realistically is just a few that have the cap space to accommodate what will likely be the largest salary ever. Philadelphia would have top get rid of several player top make room since it has several players that will be coming off their low rookie contracts and demanding top money; Embiid already has gotten a new contract and Simmons is next along with some key player like Redick that have high dollar contracts. Golden State has the highest payroll and Durant will be getting much larger contract than the $24M he gets now and after next season Klay Thompson is up and he will also be getting considerably more than the $18M he gets that could be considered a bargain and if he decides to leave, he would the the top player for a lot of other teams instead of the third wheel after Curry and Durant The same is true for many team and only a few have the cap space to take on LeBron and the supporting cast he will demand. LA has the cap space and the Knicks can shed a lot of contracts and have money to sign LeBron and another big name to go with Porzingis to create a contender, particularly in the weaker East Division.
Also, there is the chemistry aspect. Kyrie went o Boston because he did not want toi play with LeBron and if he were to sign with Boston, Kyrie likely is gone. I saw someone mentioned Milwaukee but I am not sure LeBron and the Greek Freak would be a good match, particularly when many consider him the next best player in the League and would be in direct competition with LeBron; it might be the same case with Houston and Harden plus Houston might not have the cap room because resigning Paul and Capela will not be cheap. Lebron does not just move to another team, he takes over the team and demands players he likes and even new coaches, something that does not sit well with most players or GMs.
Lebron will be 34 next December so he is getting to the end of his career and, much like Kobe, he started right after high school and played high minutes everywhere he has been so he has a lot more miles than other players his age. Realistically he has 3-5 year left, probably closer to 3, and with the current make up of the League his chances of catching Jordan title-wise are pretty slim, so my guess is he want to end his career in one of the bigger markets with an eye on his future after basketball and LA is without a doubt the place and the fact the he bought a second mansion there would appear to indicate he will be living there after he is done playing; I understand he spends a fair amount of the off season there already. LA has the cap space and few young promising players already and if it can get George and Leonard then it has the core for a real contender.
Remember? KU was one big away from a national championship. With Big 12 Title and a NCAA championship he is the next Anthony Davis...
Same role but much different results...
GS 3-point shooting percentage against Cavaliers.
- Game 1 36.1%
- Game 2 41.7%
- Game 3 34.6%
- Game 4 36.8
just sayin'...
I agree if it is a serious or major groin injury but a groin tweak is a much less painful albeit constant inconvenience while cramps are extremely painful and will actually prevent you from even standing up until the trainer manages to massage them away. This is why Wayne was able to play 35 of 36 games that season and averaged 33 mpg.
Both Golden State and Houston have free agents coming up and only so much money so their make up in a couple of years will be in all likelihood different. This has been the norm in the NBA and the period of dominance by a single team runs in cycles.

@JayHawkFanToo Mid to upper 30s? Starting the weekend early?
Low 30s would be 30-33, mid 30s would be 34-36 and upper 30s would be 37-39, right? so the mid point would be 36-37 add a +/- 1 and we are at 35% to 38% which I thinks is very achievable. We should review these numbers around the end of the year and see if how they shape up. I will guess that whichever one of us is correct will certainly bring it up.
LeBron bough a $25M house in LA a couple of months ago and now has two homes in LA and the one in Cleveland/Akron. He wants to finish his career in the biggest entertainment place in the country and that is without a doubt Los Angeles. It would not surprise me to See the Lakers shed a few players and get LeBron and another big name to make a run for multiple championships...of course, LeBron will also need a Former Jayhawk to win more titles...
I understand Garret has been working hard on his outside shooting and I would not be surprised to see him shoot on the mid to upper 30s which would be a nice bonus.
Would you say that Davonte is injury prone?...and yet he played most of his junior season while cramping up which is a considerably more debilitating condition that a groin tweak. If you have a serious injury you just don’t play 35 of 36 games while averaging 33 mpg...it just does not happen.
As far as the draft, many expected Simien to go lottery and instead fell all the way to 29 with many teams passing on him because his iffy upside and Miami hoped he would develop but his game just did not fit the NBA. If his injuries were that serious he would have retired at that point but played another 3 year for a second division Spanish team. Players with top potential are selected and kept despite injuries, see Embiid and Noel and when the injuries are severe players retire, see Oden or Ming.
I think you are taking Coach Self’s words out of context; he did not call it an injury but a groin tweak and he played 35 out 36 games that year and the rest of the “injuries,” other than the shoulder, were minor and something that most players, both in college and the NBA deal with on a daily basis. If you look at pictures of locker rooms before after practice and games you will see lots of players getting treatment for one type or another of minor assorted ailments. I played only to JuCo level varsity sports, which is not even close to the level of Division I, and I can tell you that at one time or another every member of the team had an injury or tweak and we just had our before and after game/practice procedures to deal with them; it is the nature of the business.
Injuries did not prevent Simien from sticking in the NBA, he was the stereotypical tweener whose game did not translate to the NBA. TRob, who was the runner up for POY, had the same issue. Embiid who did not have nearly the success Simien had in college was out his entire first NBA season and most of the second due to injuries and he is in the League. If a player has NBA talent, he will stay in the League regardless of injuries (see top 76ers players) and not just go play overseas, unless the injuries are career enders such as Yao Ming.
Yes, indeed. He injured his shoulder in January and had season ending surgery. Graves had himself a nice NCAA tournament and opened the door for him to play some at the higher level.
I remember Simien being pretty upset when Coach William left and uttered the famous..."I gave my right arm for him, literally. I gave my right arm for that man."
Simien was healthy in his freshman, junior and senior years and only injured in the last part of his sophomore year; I posted his stats above. I don't know where you get the idea he was "snake bitten" at all. A player does not get to be an All American for two years running and National Senior POY by being snake bitten.
His short stint in the NBA had nothing to do with injuries, unless you count salmonella (which he had during the summer league) to be an injury; his game simply did not translate to the higher level...pretty much like TRob.
Perhaps you have him confused with another player?
@Ralster as well. I always enjoyed his post and having attended a Coach Self summer camp he had interesting "insider" information.
Simien had a shoulder injury at the end of his sophomore year and was healthy his last two season when he received All- American Honors in both seasons and played 32 of 33 games as a junior averaging 32.7 MPG and almost a double double and 26 of 30 as a senior averaging a team leading 34.3 mpg and a double double. Much like TRob, Simien was tweener, great in college but not necessarily suited for the NBA and this is the reason he did not stick in the League and played overseas for 3 years after which he left because of a higher calling.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Simien was pretty high I think. Played for Self but recruited by Roy.
Just to be sure, he played 2 years for Coach Williams and 2 years for Coach Self.
Again, agreed. My point was that with all the player talent it has and all the help it gets teams cannot even break even. How exactly does daddy Ball expect to stay in business under his current business model?
Daddy Ball just posted that after Lonzo contract is over, he will only play for a teams that signs all 3 of them...i get the feeling Lonzo was not consulted on this...
Agreed. The G League that has considerably better basketball drew 1.6M fans total including the playoffs which drew large audiences and inflated the numbers. When you consider it had 25 teams playing 50 games, it averages an attendance just over 1,000 per game. Most team have ongoing promotions the include 2 free children tickets with one adult ticket which means the paid attendance is likely under 1k per game at $5-$15 per ticket. I try to catch games with former KU players and the attendance looks to be in the hundreds. Since the teams are associated with NBA teams, they get to use the facilities at little or no cost, most of the teams have some sponsorships and none is even close to being profitable.
I hate snakes...and spiders too...

Looks like the Ball League ↗ has been a comical failure so far...
Not really. With last year’s lineup, Mitch played almost exclusively the 5 which is not his natural position and was often overmatched physically by bigger opposing centers. Coach Self himself indicated that because of need Mitch was forced to play out of position; the arrival of Silvio helped some.
Now, he will be playing at his more natural position which is the 4 or even the 3 and with additional bulk to booth and, with his extended shooting range, he is becoming a stretch 4 which KU has not really had since the twins. If his shooting % from outside stays high he can even play the 3 which in most case would result in favorable matchups, particularly with his new size and blocking skills.
Exactly. That was the question I asked on a previous post. We don’t know what position Silvio and Big Dave will be playing and there is a good chance Mitch is the first backup at the 4 and, given his 3 point shooting, he might play the 3 as well; either way looks like Mitch will get decent playing time.
...only if he is wearing his $500 Chinese made Baller shoes of which he must have lots left since not many were sold.
It sure is going to be fun watching KU play Michigan State, Villanova and UK with a front line with size, experience and depth, potentially the best Coach Self has had at KU and a backcourt equally as good. If a couple of players develop into 40%+ 3-point/shooters this could be his best team and anything short of the Final Four would be a disappointment.
The Lakers indicated the have no interest in Liangelo that already worked out for them and little Ball is a few years away. In any case, if they get in the way, Lebron will squash them and ship them out like he has done before with other players. Daddy Ball is no match for LeBron's clout.
Zion was in the original list of candidates...how he could not be? But he was not in the list of the 32 original players since he was “...no longer able to participate” according to the USA Men’s under 18 web site." target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2018/05/mu18-tc-starts.aspx) ↗
The injury appears to be the hand/thumb one he suffered at the McDonald All-American game that required a cast and apparently is not fully healed or else a new one.
He played 20, 26, 35, and 19 games in HS with his junior year being the healthiest and his senior year the least healthy.
I believe LeBron wants to finish his career in the biggest stage which means either L.A. or NYC. He bought a second mansion in L.A for $23M a few months ago and if I were a betting man I would say the Lakers are the most likely destination.
With the players Duke has coming in there are several players that can take over games such as Barrett and Reddish who both are ranked ahead of him and even Tre Jones, whereas OU had just Young. As far as playing time, I just don’t see him playing the 35 mpg that a Young played considering than in his Sr. year in HS Zion averaged only 23 mpg.
There is a huge difference between HS and Division I. Where he could overpower just about all HS players he faced he will not be able to do quite the same against the much bigger college players and it will take a much heavier toll on his endurance. As @Crimsonorblue22 mentioned, he has been injury prone and no doubt his weight contributed to it; he was not selected for the US team because he apparently is injured again. No way he averages 35 mpg like Young did.
If Mitch had any plans of becoming a coach, Engineering would be the last thing he would be studying, don’t you think?
Don’t do what you are good at, do what you are passionate about and become good at it.
Now, what position do you see Silvio and Big Dave playing? I see Big Dave as a Center and Silvio playing the 4 or 5 when Doke is resting while Mitch will no longer be playing 5 but primarily 4 or 3. KU list KJ as a guard so he will likely not be involved in the bigs rotation. Mitch might well end up being the primary backup for Dedrick and as such get decent playing time.
Government has become too big and way too intrusive. Kids cannot even have a lemonade stand without a permit...give me a break.
