Unlikely that DeSousa will be a 4 year player anyway.
Preston was a top talent that would be very difficult to pass. The main issue with him was his school changing and apparently KU did its due diligence and figured out it would be ok ant turned out to be correct. Who would have thought the issue would end up bring a car...maybe KU should have but it did not and now it is paying dearly for it.
If you recall, not too long ago many coaches, including Self, did not care for OAD but it came a time when they had to accept that it was the way the new SOP and now the recruit OAD prospects routinely. Not that long ago I used to wonder why people used texting when it was easier to just dial the number and talk; now I use texting extensively although I still don’t tweet.
You can see where the NCAA would be a lot more careful reviewing an application with red flags for a top ranked recruit wanting to join an elite school with a big megaphone and the resources to contest findings than it would one from a 1 star prospect attending a small, no-name school with no resources to contest the findings, right? This is just common sense and bean counting 101 and something all business do.
I agree with you that the issue with Preston rests primarily with Preston and his family/advisors, secondarily with KU and the NCAA is a distant third with no tangible agenda to act Outside its own guidelines. In the current environment personal responsibility seems to be a forgotten component since it is now easier to blame someone else or to claim racial discrimination and get an compliant audience as it has already done, even in this forum (not by you @Jayballer54).
There is no team in college basketball that would have passed on Billy Preston, even when there were academic flags about his academics due to his school jumping. Big rewards come with big risks, most of the time it goes well and sometimes it does not. KU got top ranked players Wiggins and Jackson among others with no issues; others like Alexander and Diallo came with big red flags that eventually costed KU.
Pound for pound, or should I say inch for inch? Garret is the best rebounder on the team and arguably the best defender as well. Once his scoring comes along he will be one heck of a player.
Déjà vu all over again - Yogui Berra
No, the NCAA does not have a vendetta against Kansas. I am sure there are many other programs in similar situation but we are obviously more familiar with those of KU.
Because of its high profile, KU gets perhaps more attention from the NCAA because it has to be extra careful to get it right. It is obviously not the same to get a wrong ruling against KU than it would against South East Sucotash School of Mines. Also, with the higher reward that top prospects provide, they also bring a much higher risk, as we all know. Had Preston done things by the book we would not be having this discussion. I am sure KU knows that rules were broken and some sort of punishment is forthcoming, hopefully covered by the games he has already sat.
A little help from ESPN ↗ can’t hurt...
Too much parity in college basketball now. The years of dominant teams like UCLA are a distant memory, this is why in this day and age and with the current status of the sport, the KU conference title winning run is that much more impressive and will never be achieved again.
Last year’s ISU team would beat this year’s ISU team by at least 30 points.

@wissox sorry it’s fixed now, if you look at KSU tickets on stub hub they are $120 for GA.
KSU $120?
I am not sure ISU is getting anyone right now. 😁

@HighEliteMajor Do you get the impression they have locked DG in the film room over break with an endless loop of NPOY Frank videos where our hero is talking it to the cup?
Taking it to the cup? I believe that would be EJ’s video? 😂
Perry had excellent fundamentals but his compass needed tweaking, once he got it going he was gold.
Did anyone watch the Wizards-Grizzlies game Friday? Seldom started and Chalmers and McLemore came off the bench for Memphis and Markieff started and Oubre came off the bench for Washington; all in all 5 former Jayhawks saw action in one game...awesome. BTW, Washington won by 2...if anyone cares.
Bob Wischusen and Fran Fraschilla are doing the Monday night game, Jon_Sciambi and Miles Simon are scheduled to do the Tuesday game.
That seems to be the SOP of every team holding a slim lead and wanting to use up clock. The object is to use up as much clock as possible, penetrate and either kick it to the outside for an open shot, score or draw a foul. With a good ball handler the odds of getting one of the 3 options are pretty good.
Remember Perry Ellis? He was having all kinds of problems and missing close shots and rebounds? Then, at the Big 12 Tournament everything came together and never looked back.
As you all know I have been a Mitch fan from the beginning and I am hoping that yesterday was his coming out party and he will continue to contribute like he did yesterday.
A few thoughts on the game. The loss of Kelce was very costly since it took the middle game away and the Titans could concentrate on the run and long ball. While on the subject, wasn’t the hit on Kelce the text book definition of spearing?
Why wasn’t the Mariotta fumble not a fumble?
Wasn’t Mariotta past the line of scrimmage when he threw the pass that came back to him?
West Virginia gets away with so many fouls, I get the impression the refs get together before the game and say...we cannot possibly call all the fouls on West Virginia so we will call only the more egregious ones and may God have mercy on the other team. The NCAA has tweaked the rules to give an advantage to offenses but apparently grand fathered WVU into old school thug ball.
The typical football program takes 20-30 players every year and since there is a limited supply of 5 and 4 star players, the average 3 star player can name any program and has decent chance of getting there. At the bottom programs like KU he would be a starter and at the top programs likely a role or practice player.
Basketball is different insofar as the typical program has only 4 or 5 spots available and the top programs will take the the lion’s share of the top players and, even when many players might and do list the top programs as potential destination, in reality most do not have a realistic chance of joining any of the top programs they list.

You see a couple of bad plays and suddenly Malik is a turnover machine? The numbers do not support your assertion.
What makes you think that Newman is a turnover machine? With which comparable former player would you compare numbers?
If you can find one for a reasonable price...
I am hoping KU gets its act together and pulls a win against TCU; a loss would place KU in a hole to start conference play.
KU's best defensive player, Dorance Armstrong, declares for the Draft ↗. leaving an already thin team thinner. Not necessarily unexpected but sure makes Coach Beaty's job a little more difficult.
The top 6 players for ASU played 188 minutes, the top 6 players for KU played 185 minutes. I guess the concept of primary rotation escapes you so I am done wasting my time.
Dotson and Zion would actually complement each other nicely.
Arizona State that just beat KU at AFH used a primary 6 man rotation and 2 other players that played a combined 12 minutes at that game and has played that rotation through the season to date. Lots of other programs with short rotation; you can do your own search.
TTBOMK, none of the mentorship you named are prohibited by the NCAA; Wayne Simien is a mentor to many players through his Called to Greatness Campus Ministry. The problem happens when mentors start providing impermissible benefits, particularly when the benefits involve a quid pro quo.
The principle that an individual is “presumed” incident until proven guilty is not unique to our legal system, it is part of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states: "Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence."
Having said that, the NCAA is not a court of law, it is an institution which universities voluntarily join and have a saying in the operation. Likewise, student athletes do not have to follow the rules and they do not have to play NCAA sports, they can play under different organizations with different rules. If they choose to play for a NCAA member school they must follow all the rules. It is really that simple.
Lots of teams playing limited rotations like KU and they seem to be doing fine.
You need to come back from the edge.

It is the inferences that his family is dragging their feet to not comply because they are crooked, and the accusations that KU compliance is screwing up, that I think are based solely on the delay, that I think are unjustified.
I can't remember anyone saying that Billy and/or his family is/are crooked. In fact, I specifically indicated that even if they received money/car/benefits from a third party, there is nothing illegal or crooked about it...it just happens to be against NCAA rules designed to provide a level field and that every othre student athlete complies with no issues.
I don't seem to recall any allegations either that the Compliance Office is screwing up. I have pointed out that hey are just doing their due diligence as any competent and responsible office would do.
The NCAA is a big, easy and convenient target for people that really are clueless about its role in college sports.
The great majority of student athletes go through the process without any issues and it is the tinny minority that in many case have been given passes before college that believe the rules don’t apply to them that get in trouble and the “go to” answer is to blame the NCAA for doing its job.
“If there is a problem, which we are not saying there is, but if there is one, he has already sat how many games now? Fourteen games? Gosh dang,” Self said. “We certainly hope and believe that would be sufficient (penalty) if there is one (problem). We are not even admitting there is one. That’s where we are at right now.“
I believe this is called a non-denial denial? 😎
Newman position at the next level, and much like Chalmers, will be PG. It is indeed surprising that he is not playing more PG, particularly when you factor in the need at that position. The only thing I can think is that he has shown to not be willing to share the ball when he should and try to take the ill advised shot or drive himself instead of passing to a better positioned player. The concern might be that with this frame of mind and as a PG he would become a veritable black hole where the ball would go to never be seen again.
If they did things right, the issue would have been resolved in a day or there would have not been an issue in the first place. If they did things right, KU would be playing Billy and not sitting him while the investigation goes on; remember that KU sat Alexander when it sensed a rules violation and it turned out to be a wise decision? If Billy and family felt everything was done above board they would have asked that Billy start playing a long time ago; even now, the family has nor asked that Billy start playing, at least not publicly or that we know, right?
There is nothing “illegal” with someone giving Billy or you or me (I wish) a car; however, it is against NCAA rules and every HS athlete with aspiration to play college ball knows it. I have gifted money before and you have likely done so yourself and so you probably know that as long as you stay within the $10K IRS limit, is not even taxable. There is now an appeal against the FBI indictments that states there was nothing “illegal” with Adidas or any other firm giving money to an individual; it might be against NCAA rules but it is not illegal. I indicated before that the actual crime might end up being tax evasion by the recipients and not the money itself.
There is no doubt there were “irregularities” of unknown extent in the acquisition of the car and KU self reported it to the NCAA, it would have not done so if it thought it was above board. Don’t you think Coach Self is on the phone every day telling the Compliance Office that it is costing him dearly on the basketball court...and we know his word carries considerable weight at KU? Right?
There seems to be a lot of smoke and likely a fire; it might have been a small fire and already extinguished but the smoke has already created a lot of damage.
The NCAA rules are fairly straight forward and readily available and the great majority of student athletes have no problem following them.
I know you are trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, I understand and I get it but your grasping at straws. Again, if the car would have been obtained on the up and up the issue would have been resolved in one day. The fact it has taken this long and KU chose to sit Billy would appear to indicate that there were irregularities, don't you agree on at least this much?
Then it would not be illegal, right?
Don't you think that being that involved in college basketball and AAU she would know what is or isn't legal?
You don't need to be a perfect parent, just a responsible one.
If you read the link I provided above you will see that Billy's mom partner who is also his godmother was a top prospect at the University of Iowa and part of a class that many consider the Fav-5 of women's college basketball and she also formed the AAU team for which Billy played. Plenty of knowledge of the NCAA rules at that household.
If he was my child, I would have made sure he was not put in that situation. Hard to believe she did not know what was going on.
Let's just say it...if the car purchase was above board this issue is resolved in one day. The fact that KU chose not to play him and potentially jeopardize wins would seem to indicates KU knew there were issues and if that was the case, the chance that Billiy's mom did not know about it is zilch... can't we all agree at least on this?
If anyone has a better plausible explanation I would love to hear it.
This article ↗ indicates Billy’s family dynamics, not really what you would expect and presented without any comments.
So, you think KU is going to finish 4-14 in the Conference? I am not sure you will find anyone that agrees with you; I certainly do not. I am thinking 12-6 or 11-7 are more realistic numbers. If Preston and De Sousa start playing soon, the record will probably closer to 13-5 or even 14-4.
The way I see it, KU has two problems it needs to address.
First, KU is right know a one trick pony and what Coach Self said once upon a time about 3 point shooting being fool's gold, that many made fun at the time, has now become reality. The team has become so dependent on the 3 that when it is not working, even at friendly AFH, KU has nothing else to use. Live by the 3 and die by the 3 is particularly applicable for this team. KU tried to penetrate but it was largely ineffective and too little and too late.
Next, the best rebounder is Garret and he is not playing much. As much as I like Doke, he still has way too much to learn and he has really not come even close to understanding what position and boxing out are. On defense, when he should be boxing out opposing players he is the one being boxed out instead and thus his rebounding is not close to what it should be. Last night Tech. players roamed the paint with impunity and out rebounded KU 44-29 and 18-8 on offensive rebounds. On offense, Doke does not know how to get himself in position to receive the pass inside like Lucas did; last night he should have absolutely dominated inside and yet he had only 11 points and 7 rebounds when he should have had a 20-15 game against a shorter Tech. team. At least, this is the area where De Sousa and Preston can likely provide immediate help, provide they ever play this season. De Sousa will likely playing soon but he would be the lesser of the contributors where Preston could provide immediate help but the chances of him playing any time soon seem more remote every day.
We should evaluate players for their contributions at KU not their rankings out of HS or their NBA careers. TRob was runner up for POY to the Unibrow and his career in the NBA consisted of bouncing from one team top the next and now he is playing overseas, Withey who was a great rebounder and the best shot blocker in recent history has mostly sat on the bench and the player who is arguably the best player in recent memory, consensus POY Frank Mason, was picked in the second round. None of these players have matched in the NBA what they achieved at KU. The same can be said when you compare HS ranking against contribution at KU.
