Pretty much all over the news now, 7 years, #147M or $1M more per year than the Padres offer.
Live by the 3, die by the 3, i.e. fool’s gold.
I strongly disagree with you. The NCAA does exactly what it was tasked and expected to do, make sure a level field is in place so a player or program does no get an unfair advantage.
When a student athlete decides to attend a programs under NCAA rules, he agrees to abide by said rules and the NCAA is required to follow up when there is evidence the rules were/are not followed. There seems to be evidence that the rules were not followed by Preston and family and it is the job of the NCAA to investigate; it would be remiss if it did not do so. The overwhelming majority of student athletes go through college with no issues; it is a tinny minority of athletes that think they are above the law that eventually run into problems.
NCAA rules and regulations are well known to student athlete and more so to top prospects who are advised by their current and prospective school every step of the way. Any athlete that breaks a rule anymore does it knowing and willingly; claiming ignorance is the equivalent of a smoker claiming he did not know smoking causes cancer. If there was no violation of rules, this issue would have been resolved a long time ago, the fact it is taking this long appears to indicate willful intent to obfuscate the facts.
The NCAA has no legal compelling authority and cannot force anyone to produce any type of information. It does however have the power to withhold clearance until such time as the student can prove it has followed the rules and regulation when evidence to the contrary is present.
Don’t blame the NCAA for doing its job, blame the prospect and family that knowingly decided to ignore the rules and regulations and avail themselves of improper benefits. One way or another, Preston will be making serious money in the not so distant future and the real losers will be the KU basketball program that will have spent probably over $100K and migh not derive any benefit whatsoever; in fact, it might have prevented another top prospect from joining the program and actually contributing and of course us, the fans, that have had to endure this senseless drama.

@JayHawkFanToo I agree with you but couldn't put it as eloquent. When is somebody held responsible for the choices?
Fire Zenger, I not only have no problem with that, I highly encourage it.
We criticize freely the winningiest coach in college basketball, what makes you think the football coach should not be?
Unfortunately this the society we have become. I read a story where gay groups are filling lawsuits indicating that Christian couples are unfit to adopt children...sigh...
I told you Tech was the Conference sleeper. Worst loss at AFH in a long time.
I agree, patience is the key; however, is Beaty the right coach with whom to have patience?
10 so far...
They got some momentum and gave it right back....
Figures. KU has this bad habit of giving one visiting player a career day.
I disagree that KU has not tried to fix the football problem, it has...repeatedly, it just has done a really piss poor job.
In his case, it would appear he has serious psychological/addiction (?) problems that are now considered medical and he can likely get a one year medical red shirt.
Too bad, he seemed to be such a nice, mellow young man that could play the piano and, if I recall correcty, play chess as well. Hopefully he gets his head straightened up and uses this God given talents in a good way.
My son looks a lot like Hosmer. I keep telling him that he should do gigs as a look alike.
Sounds like were a regular Nurse Betty back then.
I would hate to see Hosmer leave; he has been a very good player for the Royals and pretty much the face of the franchise. Salvy IS the franchise.
Ir was big news at the time.
The Fraschilla kid has been gone for a couple of years now. He was All Conference though...Academics, second team...couldn’t even make first team. Just kidding, he was obviously a good student.
This is a must win game for KU. I have a Tech. as my Conference sleeper team and they have good stats and a deeper rotation, the big advantage for KU is Doke for whom they have no match.
Preston has been with the program since the Summer and by now should be familiar with the style of play and his teammates and thus it is not unrealistic to expect him to contribute like many top rated prospects do. De Sousa on the other hand should take longer to contribute.
Jeff Withey is also 1-1 from the 3 at KU; he has attempted a few in the NBA.
Well...Pollard’s Marvin is the car Preston should have been driving and he would be playing now.
I am not sure what or where your roommate was studying but KU requires 128 credits ↗ to get a BSME which translates to 16 credits per semester for 8 semester or 4 years, This is pretty typical of most Engineering programs which range between 125 and 135 credits depending on the school and program; mine required 133 which is on the upper end. Granted, the upper level classes are more difficult and in some cases considerably more difficult than the average class but perfectly viable. A class or two in the summer makes the load considerably more manageable.
I understand that a lot of students work though school to pay the bills and cannot carry a full load but when you have your tuition, books, room and board paid and tutors available as needed, finishing a degree, any degree, in 4 years is indeed very doable.
I am sure you have heard the expression...you never get a second chance to make a first impression? BINGO!!!
I thought Sling Blue did not offer any of the ESPN channels and this is why I went with Orange since most KU games are on ESPN.
Let’s see, with the players and system he inherited he finished 7th, with his own system and players he finished dead last...yep, his style translated really well.
The better coaches don’t brag, they just deliver. The wannabes brag and don’t deliver. We know where Smart stands and we just agree to disagree.
I would wear out my trigger finger in the first 5 minutes...
Sorry, I meant to say Stretch PF.
Mitch would be playing Stretch PF. Perry Ellis was also listed as PF and he was really a SF playing PF because of need. He did considerably better when he was allowed to step out and hit from the 3 just like Mitch would be if he is not stuck backing up Doke at Center.
I just don’t see De Sousa playing 15 minutes any time soon, maybe towards the end of the season. I can see it being more likely Preston playing 15 minutes...if he is ever cleared. Having said that, if Preston is not cleared by the start of classes I doubt he would want to attend school if he is not playing. He could not wait a few months for a car so I don’t see him waiting a few months to start getting paid; he will likely sign with an agent and get some advance cash against future earnings and bolt.
LOL. SZ would be a lump of coal by now.
I understand you have to get a special e-mail invite ↗ to get the offer. I tried with no luck.
KSU did us a real solid a couple of years go when they beat then top ranked OU.
Smarts comments reeked of arrogance, disrespect and insecurity and the shot was directed specifically to Coach Self and KU.
We have had big name coaches before that actually accomplished something on a consistent basis come to the conference and not boast like Smart did. So far he has shown that, as they say in Texas, he is all hat and no cattle.
Think about it, the whole myth of Smart is made out of smoke and mirrors. He did not win a single conference title in the Colonial conference...we are not talking about the West Coast or Conference USA or even the Missouri Valley, but the Colonial Conference that averages less than 2,500 attendance per game and he could not win one when VCU moved to the A-10 either. the entire mystique of Smart is based in one lucky NCAA run that included a win over KU, that is it.
I will guess that if went to the Big 10 instead and made the same comment about Wisconsin, you would probably be all up in arms..or maybe not.
You are missing the most obvious fact...if those bigs would be at KU, Lightfoot would not be playing out of position at 5 and likely playing SF and hitting 3s from the outside. More likely scenario than yours.
I posted on a different thread before that the red shirt option would be more likely if he plans to get a graduate degree. Most engineers I know used to finish their undergrad degree in 4 years but maybe things are different nowadays; like I said, I could be wrong.
First, here is a link ↗ to the article in question so you get it firsthand.
Second, Coach Self has always been high on Mitch and he knows better than all of us combined what he can or cannot do since he sees himself practice just about every day and we don’t. I know that some posters believe they know more than HOF Coach Self, this is just laughable.
Coach Self understands that he has Mitch playing way out of position and one he is not physically equipped for holding; the personnel shortage has dictated this course of action. Mitch should be playin more like Senior Ellis did, some PF but still being able to step outside and hit the 3 which he appears to be capable of doing. The availability of De Sousa would indicate that this is what Coach Self plans to do and thus the he will not see less minutes comment. @mayjay explained this nicely.
Unless he is an Embiid-like savant, De Sousa’s contribution will be limited for a while until he learns the system and how to play with his new teammates. By the end of the season he could be a contributor; Preston has been with the team a lot longer and is better equipped to provide an immediate boost.
Last, there seems to be the assumption that Mitch will red shirt, either voluntarily or otherwise. As strange as it sounds to some, many student-athletes take the student part seriously; one that enrolls in an Engineering program falls into this category and most want to finish their degree in 4 years and get started with their careers. If this is Lightfoot’s end goal, he will not redshirt.
Just my opinion and I don’t claim it is correct and I could well be wrong.
Bilas has his own agenda that he has been pushing for a while. He was a much better analyst before he let it get in the way.
...and it is apparent to all but you that you don’t draw fouls only when driving to the basket. KU players were frequently bumped on the outside, something the NCAA says you cannot do any more with nary a foul being called...but then, apparently you know better.
I mentioned before that Tech. might be the sleeper team in the conference. Hopefully KU does not get too confident or cocky. Hit them early, hit them hard and don’t take the foot off the gas pedal.
Buddy Hield had some pretty impressive numbers and was twice Big 12 POY and once National POY. Other great players with impressive stats include Tucker from Texas, Tonny Allen, James Anderson and Marcus Smart from OSU, all 4 Conference POY.
You also left out consensus POY Frank Mason for KU.
You have to read all the contemporaneous articles to get the proper context. He confidently indicated that his goal was to win the Conference, one that boasted current and future Hall of Famers such as Self, Huggins, Smith, Hoiberg and Kruger...and even squeaky...who have accomplished a hell of a lot more at bigger stages than he did at smaller conferences; you don’t think the other coaches took notice? His comment in question was clearly a jab at Self and KU and came out as arrogant, disrespectful and infantile for someone whose claim to fame is basically one win against KU. Smart never won a Conference title before at either the Colonial or the A-10 and so far has finished 11-7 and 4th in his first year in the Big 12 with players he inherited from a Rick Barnes and 4-14 and in last place with his own team; this season he will not finish in the top half.
Looks like his words came back to bite him in the a$$.
You keep saying that Trae is eventually going to lose you a game but you can say this about very single player that enters a game and 99.9% will not give you the production Young does. You cannot say he is selfish when he has 14 assists, no way, no how, think about it...14 assists. Regardless of the 8 turnovers that you mentioned, every and I mean EVERY player in college basketball would take these numbers, no questions asked, and more importantly, EVERY coach, with no exceptions, would take him and start him in his team. He might be a freshman but he is arguably the best PG in college basketball.
I heard that but I don’t think is correct. UCLA had a couple of seasons in the 60s when it went undefeated including the NCAA and Indiana did the same in 1976 and was the last team to do it. Kentucky almost did it a few years ago before losing in the Tournament and KU lost its firs game in January during the 2010-2011 so at least those teams were undeafeted going into the next year and I will guess there are lots of others including Wichita State not too long ago?
Now, perhaps they meant the earliest when no teams were undefeated since 1948?
Patience is wearing thin in Austin; another poor finish and his seat gets very hot.
Oh yes, it happened, here is a link... ↗
Not a single unbeaten team left before the end of the year.
Could be an interesting or a really stupid story.
Efficient 3 point shooting is called a zone killer. Shaka not so Smart gambled KU would cool off from the 3 and lost that bet.
We already know that obviously he is not that smart otherwise he would not be in this mess.
