Dok's back... • Dec 31, 2017 05:19 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Wasn’t the same for KU? I don’t believe KU even got in the bonus until very late in the game when Texas started to foul to stop the clock, I believe with 22 seconds left?

Who’s the pretender? • Dec 31, 2017 05:08 AM

@Jayballer54

Can’t you really say this about every player? So far, Trae has not los a game for OU and has won a a bunch of them. I’ll take him any day.

@Crimsonorblue22

Is there any reason why he cannot sell the car? More importantly, is he still driving it?

Dok's back... • Dec 31, 2017 04:45 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Texas shot 14 FT in the second half alone, KU shot 15 the entire game. Svi had 4 fouls which to me is being in serious foul trouble. Just sayin’...

When the eff are we getting Billy?!?! • Dec 31, 2017 03:50 AM

@BeddieKU23

Then sell the effin’ car and use the money to pay to whoever gets the money. He needs to prioritize what he wants; if the car is the priority then he does not belong at KU.

I understand that just came out yesterday. If that is the case, wouldn’t the logical answer be if you don’t have the money, give the dang car back?

Embiid has not had any back issues in the NBA that I know. He had a broken foot that did not heal properly and was reinjured and then a torn meniscus on his left knee.

I am curious, what exactly would you like him to say when that is all the information he has available to him? Until he announces the NCAA decision he will critized by some regardless of what he says.

Gotta strap it up fell'as • Dec 30, 2017 08:47 PM

@HawkChamp

I agree.

On a separate note, I don’t like the TCU court, too light and bright and reflects too much light and when the video cameras compensate the broadcast looks like the place is dark, particularly with the cameras located higher. Ughhhhh....

Gotta strap it up fell'as • Dec 30, 2017 08:38 PM

Is TCU that good or just playing an overrated OU? Does Young get star treatment from the refs?

I agree. The one on Svi was just bad but Bilas, who sounded like a high school girl with a crush on Bamba, would not say a thing. Surprised Bills was doing a Big 12 game.

Texas Down, Four to Go Until Morgantown • Dec 30, 2017 05:54 AM

I thought KU dealt with the press just fine. For all the pressing Texas did the forced only 1 turnover; I would call it pretty damn good.

Why do you think he is overrated? Very unfair to say he could be crooked because you think his brother is. Sean Miller has been very successful everywhere he has coached and has anyone stated that he is crooked...other than Jaybate, of course? Even the FBI investigation did not mention him personally unlike Pitino :smile:

Yeah this is a typical slog team from shaka. We have to bring one of our best offensive games to prevail in this one. I can see bamba being a big factor

KU will be bombing away from the outside anyway. If the 3s are falling it could be a blowout, if not a close game with Bamba being a factor.

Big 12 down • Dec 29, 2017 08:44 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Archie Miller si the best up and coming coach. A few years at Indiana should have him ready for KU.

Ok guys come on , have some fun • Dec 29, 2017 08:43 PM

It could be a blowout or more likely a close game with KU winning 70-65. I have WVU over OSU in a squeaker 76-74, ISU over KSU in a two point game in the low 70s and Tech over Baylor in a close game in the mid 70s. Looks like 70s will rule the day...I wish the temperature was that high a round here. :frowning:

@BeddieKU23

In the conference, Texas is second in scoring defense allowing only 60.4 ppg but it is also last in scoring offense with only 72.4 ppg. If you look at the overall conference stats, ↗ Texas is at or near the bottom in all the good stats and at or near the top the top in all the poor stats. The only good stat where they lead is blocked shots with 6.3 bpg; KU is 5th with 4.8bpg. Bamba leads the conference in blocked shots with 4.3 bpg.

Big 12 down • Dec 29, 2017 08:02 PM

@HighEliteMajor

My two top choices would be Brad Stevens and Archie Miller. Stevens has put together a nice team in Boston. Did you watch last night's game against Houston? Boston Came back from 26 point down to win the game. Most interesting part of the game is Smart getting two offensive fouls on Harden on Houston inbound plays with seconds left in the game. Smart has had lot's of practice but these were Hall of Fame worthy flops, not that Harden did not push and they normally would not be called, particularly on Harden, but Smart sold it both times and the ref had to call the charges. Unbelievable.

Thon Maker went to a Canadian Prep School for a "fifth" year, so his class had technically already graduated and he was old enough and I indicated at the time that it was likely that he would jump to the NBA, which he did. Not quite the same situation with Silvio whose class will technically graduate at the end of the school year (May-June).

No need to get upset, it is just a friendly discussion in a sports forum.

I never said Dixon is not a good coach, I said and I still believe he is just not elite. Is Dixon better or equal to Self, Huggins and Kruger? In my opinion, no. Would KU hire Dixon? The answer is probably no which means he is just not an elite coach...again, in my opinion.

Big 12 down • Dec 29, 2017 07:08 PM

@truehawk93

Prohm has been very good for ISU, not quite the mayor but few would be. Having said this, there is a chance the mayor comes back to ISU; his stint in the NBA so far has not been good and Bull's fans are just about out of patience. This year (0.353) they are way behind the previous two years when they were a 0.500 team. Uunless they make a run they will finish out of the playoff, again, and Hoiberg will be history.

Big 12 down • Dec 29, 2017 06:54 PM

I would rank the Conference coaches as follows:
- Elite coaches - Self, Huggins Kruger, their records speak for themselves.
- Top tier but not quite elite- Dixon, Drew and Weber. Most of us don't care for Drew or Weber but Drew has made Baylor relevant and kept it as a consistent too 25 team. Might not like Squeaky and he can't recruit or keep players in the program but he can flat out coach.
- In between - Prohm, he has done well with Hoiberg players and he is coming along; not quite the mayor but not bad.
- Still too earl to tell - Boynton and Beard; we shopuld know more after this season.
- Overrated - Smart. So far he has shown that he reached his level of incompetence when he joined a major program. Worst W-L record among conference coaches at 51.3% and it is not even close, next is Weber at 61%

Big 12 down • Dec 29, 2017 05:04 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

We did not have Doke either and this year we don’t have Mason or Lucas. I was simply pointing out that the win was agains a KU team at less than full strength. This year KU’s team is quite different than last year, probably not as good at this time but can get considerably better once Silvio and Cunliffe start to contribute and more so if Preston becomes available.

Texas Longhorns - Friday - 8 pm - ESPN2 • Dec 29, 2017 04:58 PM

@justanotherfan

Don’t forget Texas Tech., they Are probably the conference sleeper and will surprise.

I have KU, WVU an OU as the top 3 teams in the likely but not necessarily final order. Next I have Baylor, TCU and Tech fighting for a top hal finish and finally Texas, KSU, OSU and ISU at the bottom. We have a very small sample on the teams so far since games against weak teams don’t tell us much. We will have a better idea after this weekend.

Keegan • Dec 29, 2017 06:42 AM

@Jayballer54

SOS at this time is very misleading. Look at who are the teams with the highest SOS, they are all team ranked in the 300s and with losing records. Poor teams play and lose to the better teams and thus end up with super high SOS which means nothing. Once conference play starts the numbers are going to flip and the SOS for the Teams in the better conferences is going to shoot up and the SOS for the teams in the lesser conferences and with current high numbers is going to drop.

Using the SOS at this stage to predict conference finish is silly. All the SOS indicates is the level of competition a team has faced and not really how good or bad the team is.

@JayHawkFanToo TCU had won 6 Big 12 games total in their first years in the league. Dixon won 7 Big 12 games including the tournament win over Kansas last year. He also more than doubled their win total from the previous season in his first year.

That's major immediate progress no matter how you look at it.

Correction, TCU won 8 games in the conference prior to Dixon, 10 if you count the conference tournament; Dixon won 6 games, 8 if you count the Tournament and finished 7th and a trip to the NIT with some pretty decent players he inherited and 2 he recruited, Fisher and Bane, that were the 4th and 6th players on the team. Like I said, he inherited a decent team with nowhere to go but up and brand new facilities. He has made good progress, there is no denying it, but with his recruits and a veteran team let’s see if he can finish in the top half of the conference.

P.S. KU did not have Jackson when it lost to TCU. Just sayin’...

Big 12 down • Dec 29, 2017 04:34 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

I was referring to both coaches having their programs start to regress and leaving before being fired, like I said Tubby more so than Dixon. The last 5 years at Pitt were below average and now Dixon has a unique opportunity to show how good he is; a top half finish in the conference would show real progress.

When the eff are we getting Billy?!?! • Dec 28, 2017 11:44 PM

@Jayballer54

Scholarships don't have a specific year attached to them. The school can carry only 13 players on scholarship at any one time, regardless of whether they are freshmen, seniors or red shirts. If the school uses only 10 one year, it cannot carry the unused ones to the next year. It was lucky that KU had one left this year so Silvio can use it and he will be using one of the 13 next season as well.

I think this is what you were asking?

Big 12 down • Dec 28, 2017 11:33 PM

@Jayballer54

I will be perfectly hones with you, I have no clue what your point is. I did not say Dixon was a bad coach; in fact, I said that I liked him and he was better than Tubby Smith. Again, I am not sure why you are attributing to me opinions that I did not express.

I likened Dixon's situation to that of Tubby Smith because both had success initially but the programs seemed headed in the wrong direction, perhaps they became complacent and did not work as hard as before...who knows. In the end, both were close to be fired when they chose to leave; Smith was probably a lot closer while Dixon another sub-par year away. I also indicated that moving to TCU was good move since it gave him a chance to start fresh with a program with nowhere to go but up. I am not sure what else I can add to it.

We both have opinions that at times are different and are just that...opinions, and unlike facts, they cannot be right or wrong just different. At no time I said you could not have an opinion or that you have to agree with me, I simply stated mine that happens top be different than yours and I still don't see what the issue is.

Please re-read my posts and if you have questions please don't jump to conclusions, just ask.

I am with @FarmerJayhawk. Preston would be gone by now if the staff or Preston himself thought he would not be playing...unless he has made a deal with KU that he will stay one extra year, which given his actions to date does not seem likely.

When the eff are we getting Billy?!?! • Dec 28, 2017 07:11 PM

@HighEliteMajor

The one big maybe even huge upside of having 3 top 30-40 players joining in this late is that the team will continue to improve until the end of the season and maybe even peak by tournament time. Most other teams have by now pretty much reached their potential and will improve only marginally while KU will continue to get better.

All the scouting teams have done of KU will go out the window, if Preston is able to play and DeSousa and Cunliffe develop as expected.

When the eff are we getting Billy?!?! • Dec 28, 2017 07:05 PM

@BeddieKU23

Most every major programs has plenty of issues, we are just more attuned to the ones at KU.

Big 12 down • Dec 28, 2017 06:59 PM

@truehawk93

In many ways Dixon situation is similar to that of one Orlando "Tubby" Smith who resigned from Kentucky one step ahead of being fired. Even when he had won a Title (with Pitino players) the program had gone down and donors and fans were ready for a new coach. Since he left Kentucky, I don't believe he has had a single season with a winning conference record in the Big 10, Big 12 or American Athletic Conferences.

Look at Dixon's record for the previous five years and you will see that the program was not nearly as good as it was in his previous years (complacency???) and he was one below par season away from getting the boot. At TCU he inherited a programs that had gotten new facilities and was beginning to improve and as the bottom team in the conference had nowhere to go but up. Win-win situation for an alumnus getting ready for a new start.

I never cared for Tubby Smith and always thought he was overrated; I do like Dixon and I believe he is a better coach than Tubby.

Big 12 down • Dec 28, 2017 06:42 PM

@Jayballer54

Where did you get that I don't like Dixon? I did not say anything like that. I simply said let's wait until he finishes in the top half before anointing him as the next great coach. Yes, he has improved TCU but winning the NIT is not at the level of making it to the NCAA Tournament; let's face it, you win the NIT because you could not get to the dance.

TCU is unbeaten because of a very soft schedule. Other than a win over Nevada and maybe SMU they have nothing but teams they should have beaten anyway. Let's see how they do against OU and then we will talk.

Silvio is cleared! • Dec 28, 2017 06:27 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Technically his class will not graduate until the end of the spring. He happened to graduate early because in his native country school start at the beginning of the calendar year and ends towards the end.

It could be argued that his normal class was when he was 18 (graduating in May of 2017).

There is no age that I know that dictates when a student graduating class is. It is when he completes the required course work to graduate, normally a period of 4 years of HS. Many student graduate at 17 or even younger (Svi, Doke) and have to wait 2 years in college until they turn 19, even when his graduating class is one year old or older. Others graduate when they are well over 19 and the age requirement no longer applies only the one year class wait.

Here, school runs someway parallel to the NBA season so the end of the school year is before the start of the NBA season and the end of the school years is close to the end of the NBA season so the one year wait is normally not an issue.

If the NBA allows him to apply for the draft with less than a full season wait, we might see lots of top older prospects suddenly start graduating early and having to go to college for only half a useless season; I don't believe schools would go for that. If KU thought he would be going to the NBA at the end of the season, I am sure they would not waste the time and effort since it would make a further mockery of the system that is almost there anyway with the OADs.

NCAA Attendance • Dec 28, 2017 11:47 AM

@justanotherfan

It is not that simple. Mid majors do not want to play major programs, they also want to improve their records by feasting on lower ranked teams. The bottom one hundred teams are what boxing calls a tomato can or an opponent hired to take a beating.

For the smaller programs, the payout they derive from being a traveling punching bag pays for their entire athletic budgets. A mid major has the option of paying a smaller school and have a nice crowd at home and actually make money or play a major school and get paid nothing on the road and have the same crowd at home on the return game. A big program like KU has the option of paying a small program $50K to play at AFH while selling out the place and making well over $500K with no return engagement required or play a mid major and paying nothing at home but having to play a return game away and deriving no money. Major programs schedule other major or mid major programs as part of inter conference contests or enough to give their programs strength of schedule that will help with eventual seeding. KU supposedly has one of the top schedulers in the business with and eye for programs that will have a bigger upside several years into the future and thus ensuring the SOS will be maximized.

College basketball is a business and money drives the train. I read of one small program that played just about every single pre-Conference game on the road and earned enough to fund the entire athletic budget for the year.

I understand the lure of the NCAA is huge for the smaller conferences that realistically have no change of winning the tournament or in many case even winning a game; we know the top 68 teams do not make it to the dance since the auto qualifiers, that many times are not even top 100, take a fair number of slots and fall dangerously close to the participation trophy analogy that seems to be the new norm. I would favor a tournament with the true top 32 teams, single elimination to get to the sweet 16 and double elimination the rest of the way.

Too much hype around Dixon. His last 5 seasons at Pitt he finished 13th, 4th, 5th, 9th and 9th with only 2 NCAA appearances. TCU finished 7th last season and missed the NCAA. I understand TCU is doing well so far but let’s wait until he finishes in the top half before we call him a great get for the conference.
