Every team in the Big 12 has at the most 2 loses or less except Texas that has 3...no other conference comes even close to this. Think about it.
It is hard to tell anymore who is a Center or PF. Some players that are listed as Centers can go outside and hit the 3 so they are really more Stretch PFs than Centers. Gobert and Jokic are really good.
The Big 10 has Michigan State and Purdue and it drops big time from there.
Because of his shot blocking prowess, how about “Mitch slap” an obvious play of words with the other word that starts with a “b” that seems fitting.
Sorry, I have not heard that for a while now. All the computer rankings have the Big 12 as the top conference and is not even close.
What @justanotherfan said and I would also add Marc Gasol, the Unibrow, Kevin Love,Jokic, Gobert and Karl Anthony-Towns right of the top of my head, although some are considered PF/C. I don’t disagree that Embiid is a very good player but before we anoint him as great we need to see more than 25 games.
Who say the conference is down?
As good as Embiid is (when healthy) there are other proven players as good or better in the NBA at his position; anyone that says otherwise obviously does not watch the NBA enough to know better. Like @whipperboy73 mentioned in the Christmas Day game, Kanter played equally as well or better than Joel.
The issue with Embiid has been and will continue to be his health until he proves beyond a doubt he can play entire games day in and day out. This season he has played the most games of his very young career but has played in only 25 of the 33 games the Sixers have played; I understand that he is in quite a bit of pain in between games and receiving constant physical therapy. Hopefully his career will not be cut short like the one of another great promising player named Yao Ming.
It might surprise some people to know that there are still student athletes for whom a degree comes first. Kids that are studying Engineering, like Mitch is, seem to be more concerned about finishing their degree and less so on going to the NBA. If sports are more important then you go to West Virginia and study Sports Management, it must really be a good program since 6 players on the UWV team are in that program.
Unless Mitch is planning on getting a Master’s degree, my guess is he will not red shirt, will complete his engineering degree in 4 years and move on with his career. He has already achieved his dream of playing for KU and it is my guess that he does not have NBA aspirations. Of course I could be completely wrong.
I believe his graduating class has to be one year removed which will not be the case for Silvio.
Keep in mind that if he stays he still has to attend classes and maintain good grades. In the G League is all basketball all the time.
My hope is that once Silvio and Preston start spending time backing up a Doke, Mitch spends more time playing his more natural position of SF/Stretch PF and continues to score from the 3 at the same .500 clip.
Mahomes is at this time largely an unknown. You just don't get rid of a proven QB for an unknown. I say keep Smith and have Mahomes learn from Smith and in a couple of years, when Smith is ready to slow down, let Mahomes take over with Alex Smith tutoring him.
Agreed, neither is Shaka Smart.
Nothing personal and I don't want to impose my religious believes on anyone but comparing coaches losing in the tournament to Christ being crucified is way over the top and offensive to me personally and it might be to other posters as well. I am speaking only for myself and I don't claim to represent anyone else and perhaps other posters are OK with it.
Perhaps a better comparison would be climbing Mount Everest; very few make it to the top and most end up in the first aid posts along the way.
Doke needs one more year to learn basketball fundamentals and improve his athleticism. I would be shocked if Preston comes, back; in fact, he might bolt if he is not cleared by the time the Spring Semester starts. Newman’s plan (and his dad) has always been to be playing for money next season; at this point the NBA is not within reach so overseas is the more likely destination.
Trae Young is realyl, reallyy good and puts out great stats...so does Russell Westbrook and his team goes nowhere. The 3 main computer ratings, KenPom, Sagarin and Massey still have KU ahead of OU. Oklahoma has one really good win at Wichita State and one bad loss to a pedestrian Arkansas team; in a couple of weeks we will know better how good OU really is.
Ed Hightower refereed the finals in '88 and '08...I wish he would still be around so we have another shot at the Title.
You don't think Jason Kidd and/or Steve Nash deserve to be in the HOF?
Wishing a Merry Christmas to all my fellow forum members and a Great New Year, hoping it brings a National Title.
2 MVPs, awesome. KU’s 2018 class is scary good. Thanks again for the links.
Wouldn’t he better Suited for the Washington Generals? :smiley_cat:
Thanks for the links, great information. IMG will really miss Silvio. Looks like all 3 KU signees had double doubles.
I thought we were selecting players for the HOF but I’ll play. If you had to start a team and you could pick your PG from Kidd, Nash, Billups, Hardaway and Bogues you would pick Bogues?
Indeed, best 5’3” player ever but as a NBA players go, average at best; definitely not HOF.
Absolutely...and he has a good chance of getting it.
At that point, does it really matter? If he gets an agent he can probably get a chauffeur.
By the start of the Spring season 18 games would have been played with only 13 left not counting post-season and if he has nor been cleared by then the chances only get smaller. Preston is already 20 and he would likely be a 1st round pick based on his HS play and potential.
Jason Kidd, Steve Nash and Ray Allen for sure, Billups and Hardaway possibly, Webber and Wallace maybe. Bobby Jones and Grant Hill were better in college than in the NBA. Some of the rest are very good players but not quite HOF level and some are eligible but don’t need to be in the list.
My guess is that if he is not cleared by the first day of Spring classes, January 16, he will pack his car and leave. I just don’t see him sitting the entire season.
Looks like an East Coast destination.
That is one short handed IMG Academy rotation, 12 minutes and 2 point from the only non-starter.
Dedrick is better than any player KU could get at his position. Likely pre-season All-Conference.
Sorry about your loss, dogs are family. I took me 7 years to get over the loss of my previous one and finally last April I adopted a rescue dog.
...and Durant is 0-2 against KU.
Better than 2 attempts, right? His 3 point shooting average last year was 66.7%.
Excellent point. This year KU, WVU, TCU, OU, TTU and even Baylor can win the conference; Texas is probably a long shot and the 3 “State” schools probably have little or no chance. Holding serve at home will be critical. A two or three way tie is not unrealistic.
Indeed. Snyder is 78 now and had a recent bout with cancer...talk about a catch 22. Too bad Snyder is undoing some of the good will with the school just to help his 48 year old kid. I can understand trying to get your young kid get started...but a 48 year old?
Fair enough. One thing that we have yet to see isDoke as the rim protector he was in high school. Granted, so far he has not done much of that because he is drawn out of position too often. If he can stay in position, he could be a factor in limiting drives to the basket.
Coach Self is very good at planning a defense for a player that has burned you before. Hield had 46 points the first game but only 24 the second game at home. I would no be surprised to see Garret guarding or trying to guard Young, but some sort of junk defense will likely be used. We know that some OU player will have a career day against KU, seems to be a tradition.
Lightfoot might be better off playing as a stretch PF rather than a close to the basket one. He is shooting 50% from the 3, best on the team; a little stat that gets overlooked.
In most cases this is not an issue; however, for foreign players like Silvio who have played overseas, in his national team in his case, and who have a so called “guardian” here, there is always a question of whether they accepted any benefits that would affect their amateur status. Hopefully in his case the review goes fast.
KU pounds?
I understand they are different type of players, but if you remember, we did not think back then KU had anyone that could match up with Hield either; Hield got his point and Devonte did his as well. Also. KU is not playing freshman Hield or Senior Young and considering how well freshman Young is playing, he is the equivalent to senior Hield, both having POY type seasons, and in all likelihood we will not know how good senior Young would be since he is likely gone after this season.
Devonte is still around and might decide to take on Young, hopefully with the same result KU had with him on Hield.
Don't need to be so touchy, it was nothing personal. I was simply laying out the comparison to make the case that KU did it before against a somewhat similar player and can do it again.
Interesting names like Sledge and Rambo and of course KY. More interesting is a super tall guard, Franklin, listed a 6 feet 16 inches...pretty tall for a 175 Lb. player; Manute Bol skinny.

KU swept OU with Buddy Hield which was every bit as good as Trae Young and was also POY. The first game was 3 OT thriller in Lawrence and the second not as close as the first and Devonte went mano-a-mano with Hield and KU cane out ahead. No reason KU cannot do the same again or at least hold serve at home. KU staff is lot more familiar with OU that it was with Arizona State; the team will be ready.
The announcers were very good. Even when the interview with Mason lasted a fair amount of time, it did not feel like it took anything from the flow of the game. DickItch should watch replays of this game and learn how is done right.
I read an interview with SVI about the draft camp and he indicated he was told to be more aggressive and he was that against Stanford. I wish Newman would do more driving to the hoop.
Agreed; no days off in conference play this season. Holding serve at home is essential plus beating the weaker teams on the road and stealing a couple of wins against the better teams away will likely do it. I see Preston as the key since he could be effective almost immediately; DeSousa will take more time and he might be ready to contribute towards the end of the season and post season. Has KU ever won the conference with 6 losses?
Sorry about my double post. I could not see the first so I rewrote it and now both show...go figure.
