@HighEliteMajor

Li Ning is endorsed by Dwyane Wade and also by Evan Turner and Dorrel Wright. Anta Sports, the outfit I mentioned on my original post (2nd from the top) had Keving Garnett and Klay Thompson wearing its shoes.Peak Sports has Tony Parker and George Hill, who both have signature shoes; Carl Landry is also signed with Peak.

The Chinese shoe-cos are already here and it is a matter of time before they become big players. Like most Chinese products, the quality is inferior but you can always buy 3 or 4 for the price of a brand name item.

I buy a lot of electronics from China and a local product that would cost me $100, I can buy the same generic Chinese product for $15 including expedited shipping from China; a no brainer really.

I had to buy a sensor for the significant other's Mercedes Benz and I called one of the on-line auto part retailers. He asked, do you want the brand name part or the generic version? I asked what is the difference? He said they are the same product made in the same factory in China, one is labeled with a brand name the other is not, the brand name is $150 the generics is $29...guess which one I got...

By now, most of the brand name shoes are probably made in China and it is just a matter of time before we are given the same choice, brand name or the same shoe with a generic/Chinese brand for a fourth of the cost.

It is impossible to compete with China in manufacturing even when American workers are twice as productive but Chinese workers hourly rates are one tenth of its American counterparts, work 12 hour days and do not have unions or labor issues.

I believe he also played shortstop for the baseball team at KSU.

UA appeal has been to the younger, urban people where it is extremely popular but that is a demographic with reduced buying power. The older, more affluent crowd are the ones that have the money to pay for all that over hyped and overpriced apparel. I see a lot of younger kids here in suburbia wearing UA gear but the parents are still wearing Nike/Adidas.

No doubt. When you are fighting with only one third of the weapons you normally have, it places you at distinct disadvantage. If the fight was under MMA rules, McGregor wins in less than 3 rounds.

@ICTJayhawk

As I said, the lack of a strong football program limits the options.

Adidas Pays • Aug 27, 2017 08:59 PM

Without a strong football program, KU's options are limited. Nike already has a big presence in the Mid West so I would not think KU is high in their list. Under Armour is East Coast based and trying to get a foothold in markets with a young urban presence (West Coast) and KU does not fit that demographic. Adidas is likely still the best option.

Obviously, a strong football program would change the equation and I am sure the AD is aware of this and hence the big emphasis in upgrading the football program and facilities.

Adidas Pays • Aug 27, 2017 05:53 PM

@ICTJayhawk

Louisville is consistently ranked as the most valuable program in Men's basketball plus they also have other sports, particularly football, that do very well.

KU has one of the top ranked valuable programs in men's basketball but other than women's volleyball and track and field, neither a big audience draw, there is not much more; football has been a drag, although there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel...hopefully the tunnel does not collapse. :smiley:

There are two dominant sports in college sports, men's football and basketball; KU does very well in one and very poorly in the other. The Adidas deal with KU is based almost solely on the success of the basketball program, without it KU would have a contract with Anta Sports.

@BShark

The "alleged" issue with Arthur was in HS. At KU he kept his grades up and stayed eligible. Doolitle did little AT OU and became ineligible.

@globaljaybird

Wow, I wish I had know about it, I would not pay to watch it but I can do the free thing.

Not an unexpected result. There is no way an AMA fighter using only a third of his skill (no kicking, no grappling) can beat a pure boxer , and a quality one at that, that is using 100% of his arsenal in a boxing match. A younger Mayweather would have ended the fight in 3 rounds or less even when he was not really a big puncher.

Now, if they fight using AMA rules, then I would have to take McGregor and Mayweather would not have a chance. I was surprised the fight lasted that long; I am sure Mayweather being 40 years old and 2 years out of boxing had a lot to do with it. I understand Mayweather tried to bet $400 K to end in ten rounds or less and obviously they did not allow him to do it. Maybe they stretched the fight to set up a potential rematch?

Brett Baier is pretty good. As I mentioned in my post, Fox has moved to the center and some analyst such as Shepard Smith would be at home at CNN or MSNBC with his constant attacks on Trump; he is now the managing editor of Fox News Channel's Breaking News Division.

Like I said, now that James Murdoch is in charge, the station is getting rid if all the conservative hosts and moving to the left; right now I would consider it a middle of the road.

@KUSTEVE

He led KSU to two big 8 championships as PG under Jack Hartman and was the Big 8 player of the year 2 years. As Coach he led KSU to 4 NCAA appearances in 4 years. Not bad.

@approxinfinity

I like Lon Kruger. He is not only a good coach but an upstanding individual as well...and a Kansan to boot. :smiley:

@kjayhawks

I really wish that what you wrote comes though but based on past experience we know it will likely not happen...at least not quite yet. At this time, I would be happy with 4 wins and anything over that is gravy.

Where is the investigation? • Aug 26, 2017 04:52 PM

@Kcmatt7

My point was that FOX is no longer the ultra conservative, right wing media it used to be portrayed to be. Of course, compared to the other ultra liberal, left wing MSM, it is still conservative but in my opinion, it is now middle of the road and with the new leadership at the top...moving left and definitely not pro-Trump. Citing Fox News as pro Trump is a miss-characterization.

While some specific commentary shows such as Hannity or O'Reilly have or used to have a conservative tilt, the news programs were fairly balanced.

A few years ago, a fairly liberal friend of mine took a position in KC and while searching for an apartment he stayed with me for several weeks. He used to complain about Fox News bias and I asked...how often do you watch Fox News? and his answer was...I don't because they are too biased. I said, why don't you watch Fox News for one week and then we will talk. At the end of the week he said he was very surprised at how balanced it was and how on every segment they had there was always one guest from the right and one from the left, something that other news networks seldom do.

Again, most people that comment about Fox News don't really watch it and just parrot the cliche that it is right wing source; it really is not.

Where is the investigation? • Aug 26, 2017 04:59 AM

@approxinfinity

Have you watchef FoxNews lately? Remember the slogan...this is not you father's Olsmobile? Well, Fox news is not what it used to be a few years ago when Ruper Murcdock and Roget Ailes ran the network. Now, his son James Murdock, Chief Executive of 21st Century Fox, the parent company of Fox News is running the show and he has a very liberal tilt and is no friend of Trump. Ailes is gone as are several of the more conservative commentators including
O'Reilly. Megan Kelly made herself a name by attacking Trump, have you heard Shepard Smith? He is constantly attacking Trump an he is not the only one. Chris Wallace is a liberal leaning commentator and constantly criticizes Trump on his Sunday show and his guest always include known liberal public figures.

In short, when you quote Fox News you are no longer quoting a conservative or right wing source but at best, a middle of the road one.

Is this Beaty's defining season? • Aug 25, 2017 04:35 PM

Four wins is what I would expect; three wins would be tolerable but would show only minor improvement. At least one conference win is needed to show progress; no conference wins and it is the same ol' same ol'...

In this case, what difference does the publication make? I simply posted a story with a summary of how much or how little coverage the various publication have given to the issue. Hard to cite liberal publication when they just ignore the issue and will not write anything about it, wouldn't you agree?

Really good reading with a lot of inside information but no real bomb shells. I am curious to see what your take is.

What About Mitchell? • Aug 24, 2017 05:23 PM

@mayjay

He can go to any school he wants and that will take him including KU or even JuCo, he just might not be able to play basketballs at schools under the NCAA and he might have to pay tuition like any other student.

3 on 3 Tourney at Final Four • Aug 24, 2017 05:13 PM

@mayjay

Please re-read my post. The slam dunk and 3 point competition do not have a monetary award, right? Like I said, take the prize money out and it's all good...just like the 3 point and slam dunk contests.

The school did not approve the gifts from boosters, Coach Williams unofficially indicated it would "probably be ok provided the gifts were not large;" they were not. The school got penalized for "allowing"gifts from boosters since the players themselves could no longer be penalized...like Darnell Jackson.

3 on 3 Tourney at Final Four • Aug 24, 2017 04:52 PM

@justanotherfan

And now, the $64,000 question, who pick the players? What are the chances a player feels he should be on the team and someone else gets selected with $25K at stake...lawsuit?

Like I said, take the prize money out and now you have something.

3 on 3 Tourney at Final Four • Aug 24, 2017 04:28 PM

@mayjay

This is not correct; the money was given by boosters and not the school and Coach Williams issued a statement at the time indicating that he approved the gifts and it was a mistake.

As far as the 3-point shooting and dunk competition, neither offers a cash prize....huge difference.

What About Mitchell? • Aug 24, 2017 04:06 PM

Again, the waiver is given to the school that requests it and not the player. The school cannot request a waiver until the student has enrolled. Fair or unfair these are the rules and Robinson was or should have been aware of them. Having said that, I would think that there are back channels schools use to get off the record info from the NCAA and I will guess the word is there will not be a waiver and this is why there are really no takers left.

3 on 3 Tourney at Final Four • Aug 24, 2017 03:21 PM

Here is another angle. Remember when KU was penalized by the NCAA because a booster gave seniors with no eligibility left and after school was over a couple of hundred $ to get suits for graduation after the Tournament? What do you think the NCAA is going to say/do about$25K? Playing for money makes the player a de facto professional while still at school and a member of the program which could land a program in trouble with no consequences to the players involved.

I think paying college players, even those with no eiligibility left, sets a bad precedent and starts the proverbial slippery slope.

You can't help yourself? • Aug 24, 2017 07:13 AM

@justanotherfan

The IRS is large because it is incompetent, bloated and not even familiar with the tax code it s supposed to enforce. One more than one occasion my accountant had to write letters to them pointing out they are enforcing the code incorrectly because they did not even bother to check out filing status. The standard answer is to ask for additional information and when you point out that you already sent it and have the signed receipt to prove it, they simply indicate that it must have been missplaced and you need to send it again while costing you thousands of dollars in legal expenses. Unlike our legal system, with the IRS you are presumed to be guilty until you can prove yourself innocent under the threat of penalties, fines and interest. Ask any business owner that has had to deal with them and they will all vouch for its incompetence. The tax code can be greatly reduced with no financial loss to the government and would only affect the class that makes a great living dealing with them.

Our legislators need experience not to solve the issues but to navigate the extremely complicated legislative system they created for self preservation. A simplified system could achieve the same result without all the current bureaucracy.

I could go on, but let's just agree to disagree and get back to KU basketball.

3 on 3 Tourney at Final Four • Aug 24, 2017 01:48 AM

@mayjay

I think you missed my point or more likely I did not stated it clearly. Say the potential team from a conference that would be playin in this tournament is a favorite to win and one or more of the would be players are in teams that made it to the Elite 8. Now, the player or players decide it is financially more advantageous to loose in the Elite 8 and play in the for pay tournament...see where I am going?

The obvious answer is either take the money out or wait until the tournament is over.

3 on 3 Tourney at Final Four • Aug 23, 2017 03:39 PM

@mayjay

So, a shot from outside the arc now counts twice as much as a shot inside? I can see teams with two outside shooters and one big to rebound.

What happens if a senior decides it would be more advantageous to play for $100K in this tournament instead of a trophy in the NCAA? Makes you think.

You can't help yourself? • Aug 23, 2017 03:27 PM

@justanotherfan

Unfortunately politics is now a career and politicians are interested first and foremost in staying elected; they spend an inordinate amount of tax payer's paid time raising money for the next election and less time in conducting the business of the country.

A good start would be for Congress to follow the same rules as the citizen that pay their salary. No exceptions of any kind, all the rules concerning retirement and health care should apply to them and they should not vote themselves Cadillac Health Insurance plans or gold retirement plans funded by taxpayers.

How can they possibly understand the plight of the average citizen trying to get affordable health care when they have their own plan? How can they understand the worry about Social Security when the gave their own retirement plan? If Congess would participate in both plans, the issue would be solved very quickly.

Our government is way too big andtoo invasive and intrusive. Half to the laws can be done away with with very little or no negative effect, the IRS is a bloated bureaucracy and the tax code is a shining example of what is worst in government. Tax laws can be cut by 90% and the net financial effect would be unnoticeable except for all the surplus IRS personnel.

Enough ranting for one day, back to work so I can pay taxes to suppport our bureaucracy.

LAWSON BAR BILL • Aug 23, 2017 02:55 PM

@REHawk

No problem. Padgett was a solid player who thought he was better than he actually was. He was productive at KU and at Louisville but not good enough for the next level.

Giddens is a different story. Very talented player whose big mistake cost him his place at KU. If you read Beyond the Phog and hear his side if the story, it gives you a different perspective an I will just leave it at that. He did very well at New Mexico after sitting one year and he was MWC Player of the Year in his senior year and drafted by the Celtics in the first round. After the first contract, he gas played overseas.

You can't help yourself? • Aug 23, 2017 08:06 AM

We can have a much better system with some changes.

First, term limits, one 4 year term for congressmen and 1 6 year term for senators or something about these lines. Let's go back to the original concept of the citizen legislator, where a citizen takes a few years of his career to serve the country and then goes back to his original career. With no re-election fund raising worries, you take away most of the influence of lobbyists.

Second, while in congress they are subject to the same laws as the rest of us with no exceptions, i.e. no lifetime pension after serving one term; they participate on Social Security of 401 plans and the same health care plan as the rest of us, no special retirement or health plans for congress. The health program would be fixed immediately.

It is really that simple but unfortunately it will never happen.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 23, 2017 07:46 AM

I was not a top 10 player in basketball so I would not know how difficult is to make this type of decision; I imagine pretty darn difficult. Also, think back when you were 18 years old, how good was your decision making? Mine (and I suspect most of us) was not that good so I will cut the kid a break.

If he decides to go back to WKU, I am sure they will take him back,. In today's environment you just don't say no to that kind of a talent.

Big 10 Schedule • Aug 23, 2017 07:38 AM

I have always maintained that 10 is the ideal number for a conference. Play all conference team in football (9 games) alternating home and away and play all conference teams in basketball home and away (18 games).

LAWSON BAR BILL • Aug 22, 2017 03:54 PM

This was KU's team on Coach Self 1st season:

!0_1503414935313_upload-ec55b668-a25a-4e76-afbc-5ae6d7866e2c ↗

It was a very good team but do you really think this was a championship caliber team? Once you get past Langford, Simien, Miles and maybe Graves, the rest of the team consisted of role players and inexperience freshmen. Coach Self led the team to a 2nd place finish in the conference and advanced to the Elite 8. He has won the conference every year since that first team.

Do you really think Coach Self and Tubby are on the same level? I do not. Coach Self improved every program he led and his record speaks for itself; can't say the same thing about Tubby. Both coached at Tulsa and they both coached in the Big 10 and Big 12; compare the records and it is not even close. Smith does not have a single season with a conference winning record in the last 10 years while Coach Self has won how many Big 12 Titles?

A large number of players have transferred out of Memphis in the last couple of years (under both Pastner-6 and Smith-4) and not necessarily because of playing time. Memphis has 2 returning scholarship players and it is taking Junior college transfers...I have no doubt he would take the Lawson brothers, and not just Memphis, just about every program would. Just my 2 cents.

What About Mitchell? • Aug 22, 2017 03:18 AM

@drgnslayr

As I understand, the school cannot officially request any information or waiver until the student has officially enrolled. I would think there are back channels through which a school can at least get an idea of the potential outcome of the waiver request. I am sure the staff has done its due diligence and at this time it looks like Robinson is not coming to KU.

Eclipse Updates • Aug 22, 2017 03:10 AM

Woke up to heavy thunderstorms and cloudy skies. The sun peeked in and out between 11 and 12 and then it stated to get cloudy again. Pretty cloudy during the eclipse and somewhat anticlimactic other than getting darker and colder; no crickets chirping here.

Interesting. ESPN has Missouri as #23 in the pre-season poll and with chance to contend for the conference title. Lunardi, on the other hand, has MU in the play in game...go figure...

LAWSON BAR BILL • Aug 21, 2017 11:09 PM

@REHawk

Tubby would take the Lawsons back in one New York minute, no questions asked. Tubby is a very average coach, at Kentucky he lucked out into a National Title with Pitino's players and once they were gone it went downhill. Since he left UK, he has coached 10 years at 3 different schools and conferences and he has yet to have one winning conference record; his best finish is 5th in the AAC. Like I said, a very average coach who would not mind getting the Lawsons back, issues and all. Keep in mind that the Lawsons were not the only players to leave Memphis, several did. Just my opinion.

Last year with the alleged rape at the dorm where the basketball players live

I am curious. Why do you bring up the alleged rape at the building where KU players and other students live? By now it is abundantly clear that it nothing to do with the basketball team so why even bring it up?

The Alleged happenings with Lawson - -Ya, Ya, I know Coach was satisfied with what Lawson had to say right?

The bar issue turned out to be a non-issue so gain, why even bring it up? The tone of your post appears to indicate that coach is just letting it slide. You don't have to believe Coach Self but maybe you can read the post by the bar manager where he indicated there was no issue at all and hope would Deric comes back again.

There are enough issues as it is, why add some that were proven to be false. Again...just curious...
