I'd say the Plaza Flood and the San Marcos-Wimberlie flood were very similar. 12" of rain in a very short time. Unfortunate loss of lives and property.

Houston is so flat we seldom get fast moving water unless you are in a bayou or creek with high water. There is a lot of property damage but not fast moving water that tears down everything in its path.

Hopefully you have power at your home-I hear 11,000 don't.

MEMORIAL DAY FLOODING • May 27, 2015 01:24 PM

Hi RCIT,
Happy to hear you are okay. I've been watching the water level on Lake Travis for years-most probably know it has been 50 foot below full pool for YEARS. I think half has been filled up in May alone. Yes the floods in San Marcos and Wimberlie were tragic.

Most schools were closed yesterday. I am high and dry, but 2 miles to the east we got 5" night before last and a little further they got 10" that night.

So were are okay so far but another band of storms is heading our way this morning.

Thanks for posting the photos.

Banker Drysdale was always threatening to transfer Miss Hathaway to Moosejaw, Alaska. As a kid I always wanted to visit there and Beverly Hills to see the difference.

  2. Mushrooms (in Houston)

  3. Lonesome Dove

  4. One NCAA title in next 5 years would make me happy.

Cliff mystery revealed • May 23, 2015 12:31 PM

These kids are required to watch a film EVERY time they go go an armature tournament starting when they are finishing middle school.

They have coaches and counselors to help them in high school and college alike. Some of these kids aren't the brightest of the bunch (parents as well) but there are knowledgable people all around them that can keep them informed and out of trouble.

It keeps happening, and everybody looses but the scumbag.

I like Roy in general but this didn't look good when it surfaced. I was hoping this didn't run deep because it hurts the athletes more than anyone else.

@wissoxfan83
Thanks Sox,

I really don't care one bit that a kid goes to the pros early-I could care less how old he is. I care that a scumbag screws up his long term future whether it be college, pros, intl sports or whatever.

These a-holes should be on the hook -as in -sign with me you have X million guaranteed right now-cash up front-or go to college and enjoy the life. Plan A or plan B and if an agent or lawyer crosses the line they loose every penny of the transaction, get fined, fired, disbarred , etc.

So-to make my point clear-and agent-lawyer or what ever commits.
A: You. Choose a college. and good luck no matter how long you stay-we talk when you leave the NCAA.

OR

I give you cash upfront that ALL can see and I will represent you in the NBA negotiations.

Cliff mystery revealed • May 23, 2015 12:25 AM

I've stated this before.

If a lawyer does this he should be disbarred, fined, exposed.

If an agent does this he should be kicked out of the sport, Yada, Yada, Yada. Etc. etc.

SCUMBAGS are killing young people's future who are just a step away from a real lifetime opportunity for the best- so the scumbag. can get money off them a few months early.

They are. Parasites. PLEASE FRY THESE SCUMBAGS!!!

What ever the cause-man, water vapor, cycles you can't deny the glaciers are receding big time. Mt. Kilimanjaro's snow pack is going south fast which meets less and less summer water for the people and critters alike.

My avatar was taken in Alaska the day of a glacier tour.

My grandparents had a beautiful cabin & land West of Salida from the late 50's to 1980. Mistake of my life not to find a way to keep it in the family.

I hope so. A Shell guy I know got transferred down under three years ago and they came back in a year- he said the little kids had a tough time because the pets were away for months-I guess they didn't know about the prep option.

Worse than that they quarantine dogs for months.

Yeah I told my kids they'd have to care for their German Shepard but they keep slacking off. I will say my daughter got to name the dog when she was about that age. Her first name was "blackie". I told her she'd have to do better. She came up with Toffee. Pretty good choice.

The myth of the mid-range jump shot • May 19, 2015 03:06 PM

I. remember Bobby Knight lamenting the fact that the mid range shot, specifically a. 10 foot jumper was seldom used in the game any longer, and very few players had that skill. Just as you said, "take what the defense gives you." I saw that very thing happening in the AAU tournament this weekend in Houston, Players driving into the paint and getting shots blocked when they could have pulled up a step or two earlier for an open shot.

Vick commits • May 18, 2015 03:16 PM

My cup runneth over.

I've been immersed in bBall this week. KU signed another, the rockets win win win, and watched my daughter play in four AAU games.

I took a hit from Title IX and was bitter about it until my daughter got involved in sports.

She has done alright, but I seriously doubt she'll ever play in college because she wants to attend a big school.

I sure hope we've got football on the right track.

Never thought of the squid angle. You could be right.

I was surprised they left out Texas. In general I like UT, but not Shaka.

I hope he struggles even though we need better performance in the big 12.
And I agree Maryland is getting too much love.

I suppose this pole is all about potential.

But since things are slow I will take the hype.

So the coach left. Now What? • May 15, 2015 03:54 AM

I liked Ted. Owens and he took us to a final four while I was at KU., but he did not deliver beyond that. I remember when they made him fire his assistants to buy him time-in the end it didn't matter. UT did the same thing to Barnes a short while ago and he refused. I don't have any comments on either play on either coach or university.

But I did think he had more than enough time for another final four at a minimum. We are a big program and expect big things.

So the coach left. Now What? • May 14, 2015 08:47 PM

I see what you mean about the short visit Brown had at KU. And certainly KU got some breaks with upsets in the 1988 tourney. But Brown has had success elsewhere in the bBall world too.
That doesn't mean I am not a huge fan of his or Danny and that team.
The 50-50 halftime score. We had just been to the final four two years prior so we were the real deal as far as I'm concerned. But just my opinion about Brown over Roy because of the title.
Roy did great things here during his time and I can see how anyone would rank him higher.

As for the youngsters. You are right. My teenage daughter knows players (Withey) is her favorite, and Coach Self. I've told her about other coaches and players-I doubt she remembers any of them but Naismith and Allen.

So the coach left. Now What? • May 14, 2015 06:19 PM

@JayHawkFanToo
Roy second to Bill Self? Don't you mean Bill Self second to Phog Allen? And Larry Brown with an NCAA championship is arguably better than Roy?

I'm speaking of KU stats and ranking of coaches.

So the coach left. Now What? • May 14, 2015 04:36 PM

Just another stat to confirm my old fart status. I've been in AFH to see half of them coach games.

Really, it is amazing we've only had 8 coaches at KU.

Speaking of age, last night was my son's track banquet. This was the last chapter of his track career as he will not compete at the next level. One special thing, he got the last award of the night for Texas Track All State Academic. Pretty happy he is smarter than the old man.

I will be on vacation elsewhere for those games, but will buy a shirt when they are ready.

I think the most popular vote was the iPhoto upper left on this page ( Naismith with ball and kU) followed by:
Naismith invented it,
Wilt perfected it,
We talk about it.

So you want a KU fix? • May 12, 2015 07:52 PM

@oldhwkfan
I was glad to hear it wasn't two separate KU folks with good intentions unknowingly running the price up on each other. As for Duke bidding, good thing they didn't win out. THANK YOU Mr. Booth and Josh Swade..

I promised to order some for approximity (a different design) and had a series of obstacles, and long story short I completely dropped the ball.
