Nice to have a response to Cali and KY. I really don't like their OAD model, but this draft shows we are legit in development of players. I hope we can walk the fine line of the OAD, TAD, and others that stay with us longer. I think most on this board love players who stay a long time, if not all 4 years of eligibility
RCJH
Wigs to Cavs, Joel to Sixers
THIS IS HUGE FOR KU VISIBILITY and future recruiting.
Way to go gents and God's speed.
Those who follow the NBA-is this a first?
If we start winning games and getting to bowl games we will start selling seats-and that is when we look start looking at more improvements IMHO.
@JayHawkFanToo LOL
Back in the day we played on an outdoor court near SM East. Summer time during high school and college -evenings-Saturdays. Just open court pickup stuff but competitive and fun-we were in our mid to late 20s professionals who did need to get hurt from a hobby.
One day group showed up from another neighborhood.
Blue collar croud at best and 100% street ball.
We were easily as athletic but quickly got tired off all the cr*p. Ultimately we figured out they were there to take over the court all together. It still ticks me off-
After a while we decided to join a couple of nice health clubs with wooden floors and glass backboards. It was pocket change and soon we realized we could play year round without weather issues. All's well that ends well-but I will always hate street ball.
Well street ball is alive and healthy in girls high school age AAU tourneys here in Texas. I was at a tourney this weekend and the refs basically swallowed their whistles. I do not care for street ball. Basically the kids with the skills get hammered by the less talented players because that is the only equalizer. Sometimes shooters hit the ground with a no call. We had two injuries in four games. We nearly had a couple of fights because the refs lost control of the games and were inconsistent.
I remember the watching the first KU game last year and it was a disaster. Luckily refs and players adjusted as the season went on.
I still think the pendulum swung too far with this change of rules in college basketball.
I suppose this inner city change could have long term effects on the game, but then again-what is it 1% make it to the nba? The cream will still rise to the top.
@ralster
I took my father to San Antonio for those games and splurged for some great seats. I remember being worried about Psycho T having a big game against us-especially when young Cole came off the bench. Man did Cole elevate his game. Shut down Psycho T and gave us great minutes and points.
I've stated this before. We had a track reunion last year at the last Relays in Memorial. Most of us ran in the 70's when we owned the big 8 and had a LOT of All Americans and some world class athletes. (Some of them would have been Olympians-but we boycotted Russia in 1980 because they were in Afghanistan--go figure) but I digress.
There was room to build the track south of Allen Fieldhouse if they would have just reconfigured the layout of soccer field and included it in the infield. It would have been cheaper and more importantly easier on the athletes who have to go off campus to train. 95% of us at that reunion wanted it on campus but that ship had sailed due to Lawrence politics. I will miss seeing the Relays in Memorial. I DO appreciate we built a world class track. I just hope the improvements at Memorial come fast and help the Football team. Heaven knows we need help where ever we can get it.
@drgnslayr
Top to bottom,
Amsterdam
Chania
Paris
Brussels
Hope the link works this time.
I knew about the eye, but not the shoulder. With the bad news he's dealing with nice to see him get a break.
@drgnslayr
Heading to Amsterdam in a couple of months. I will look for your court -can you give me another hint other than the park name - of course I won't be playing-those days ended in my mid thirties.
Darn,
He has overcome a lot and I was a fan. Good to see Baylor welcomes him back as a student and coach. That is the right way to handle something like this. Baylor just went up a notch in my mind. Best of luck Austin.
Thank you so much. After about 5 tries I gave up.
I don't follow the NBA, so I have no clue what team would be best.
That said, if Houston got him I would go see him play-and I believe the team that gets him will see an uptick of ticket sales where ever that is.
I know the game is more physical, but I expect his athleticism to keep improving. The kid just turned 19 in February-just think how much athletes develop between 18 or 19 and 21.
That was outstanding RCJH
Tough luck for sure-I still hope a team high in the draft rolls the dice and gives him a shot. Best of luck Joel. Get well and stay healthy.
@ralster
Great post-I tell my kids everyone has strengths and weaknesses.
Don't rest on your strengths, but try to develop them. And work on your weaknesses as well. (At some point though we all see diminishing returns-at least I did.)
OH MY GOSH-
At the end of the clip other videos pop up including KU AT THE WHITE HOUSE 2008. In the upper left hand corner.
You can see Bill Self wiping the tears of joy from his eyes behind President Bush. Bush also welcomes Danny Manning BACK to the White House. I have a picture in my office of Danny handing a KU letter jacket to President Ronnie Regan at the White House in 1988.
Approx-maybe you can post that with a permanent link with others-as in greatest ku moments?
Yes, both couldn't believe the coach said that-if anything he should have just done a Bill Self soft sell like, "it's a big challenge", etc.
Thanks for the well wishes-I'm fortunate tohave a couple of great kids and we are all having lots of fun-she's a little brainwashed about soccer, and the music she listens to though. But that's a teen vs an old fart.
@justanotherfan
IF, and a big IF that ever happened I think your plan is well thought out.
@drgnslayr
I was watching with my daughter who plays club soccer-she played on a German tour last summer is so wired about this cup-Last night she was screaming at the TV the whole game-thank goodness we won one so it helps her mood-but even she admits we probably won't go far.
@HighEliteMajor
My daughter played "Kato" in "The Pink Panther" school play so we practiced her accent-sometimes it comes in handy.
@HighEliteMajor
Chinese accent would read,
Rook, there Wilt Chamberin, glatest ahh time.
@drgnslayr
We got lucky beating Ghana. I know USA is ranked higher-but that can be like taking a pole. Ghana was controlling the ball much better than we were. Fortunately we got one super early and our late goal saved us.
These A&M grads are doing back flips about the SEC.
All they want is a game against hated Texas-otherwise they don't give a sh*t about the Big 12. I don't know about NU, but there must be some who miss the long term affiliations going back to big 8 and before.
@icthawkfan316
Don't know if the writer was aware Smart was good enough to go to the NBA after his Freshman year or just avoiding a questionable Sophomore year.
@DoubleDD
Don't know-I just know we were solid, then on the ropes for a while in danger of losing a chair when the music stopped, and now we are a solid power conference.
I would rather play it safe with the Big 12(ten) than roll the dice
@drgnslayr
That thinning hair is normally caused by high testosterone levels. It should mean Hudy and the Training Table could do wonders for CF. But I'm not sure about his frame. I've never seen him up close but my impression is he isn't very big boned. That could limit his physical potential.
I will just say this about that. If there was money thrown at the athletes in the 70's above and beyond housing/tuition/meals top athletes I was very close to,some I roomed with at Jayhawk Towers or on the road on road trips NEVER mentioned anything extra to this day.
I still believe KU runs a clean program-but has OUTSTANDING support for bball- and in my day football was also on top (two bowl games).
Dominating Big 8 swim and track teams-including WORLD CLASS Track Athletes didn't even get a nod.
I for one am really disappointed we could raise so high as the Orange Bowl bid, let alone win it-to the aftermath are in now. We went through the same thing TTech did over a loser with loser parents. As a former athlete it burns me- and we are still suffering YEARS later. It makes me want to go after the pu$$ies that destroyed our program by attacking the coach.
WHAT LOSERS!!! As a former alum and/or student athlete they should NEVER be allowed to associate themselves with KU or show themselves on campus. Frankly if I ran into one of them on the street I would enjoy punching them and the parent in the mouth as well.
This is directed at Manginos attackers.
@nuleafjhawk
I though Jed said he learned to sipher (add) at Oxford, as in where the Ox ford the stream.
I remember Max Falkenstien calling Ron Kellogg
"Special K". Seems he played his best on Saturdays.
Ditto on the athletes. I could add a ton more but won't.
Your list of coaches is okay -are you only including coaches you've seen work? If so, I'd put Self first, and Brown a notch lower Brown above Roy,Roy a notch above Owens based on what they delivered. If this is really all time I put Naismith on top for inventing the game even though he had the worst record and then Phog Allen above the three you listed.
@drgnslayr
By the way Slayer-I like the signature. I do my best to grab a beer at the Wheel whenever I'm in Lawrence. (Which isn't often enough.)
@ralster
Great post.
Pistol Pete was VERY VERY special. I remember hearing that he practiced dribbling while running down railroad tracks. As a former Gandy Dancer that would have never occurred to me as a training challenge. I could run the track hitting the ties with my feet but no way dribble them
And I doubt many could today-remember there is large gravel between and above the ties.
If you don't know what a Gandy Dancer is-we carried ties and drove the spikes to secure the rails to the railroad ties.
@JayHawkFanToo
OOPS!!! My bad- my memory is playing tricks on me.
@icthawkfan316
That Zona loss was tough-at least Lute took them all the way for a title.
@nuleafjhawk
You named every loss I would put on my list.
@nuleafjhawk
Sad to say it probably happens every year.
@KansasComet
I was there at Reunion arena. I remember Archie Marshall got pretty much tackled on a lay-up and tore up his knee-there was no foul called.
If I recall Conner Frankamp led all scorers in the McD all star game and shot a record breaking "Near perfect" 30 of 33 in the 3 point contest. I may be off in my stats-and I love Conner, but next level IS next level.
I've learned not to count my eggs with freshman until they are well through a season of Div 1 ball.
Danny Manning as a soph didn't show in Dallas in 1986-4 points if memory serves-I was there. As a senior he put the team on his back in the National Championship game.
I loved the BMAC, WIGS, EMBIID hype but they all show up some games and disappear in others.
I hope the mix gets us further this year-at least a final four and by gosh I want a NCAA title in the next 3years.
RCJH
I am not putting anybody down, but you can't judge highlight shots of top high school athletes unless you are talking a McD all star game and even then it is geared to offensive flash and not much defense per sey.
He looks great-they all do. I can't tell &@%β¬ until they play against Div1 players.
@MoonwalkMafia
That's funny- Just think if you still knew that person-you could tell that story to his kids.
In general I don't care about the NBA unless a Jayhawk makes OT to the finals. So I hope Mario fares well.
On a side note I sat next to the Admiral on a plane once.
A. The man's biceps were the size of my thighs.
B. I asked for his autograph. He wrote Matt 6:33 and then D Robinson.
We don't hear enough about the good guys in the pros.
@Wigs2
I think spellcheck got you. My addition is BUD Stallworth.
@brooksmd
I was a big chiefs fan when they were good-late 60s early 70's, then became a college football fan while at KU in the 70s. Followed some of the Ku players who made it to the NFL like Cromwell if it was televised. Otherwise it was too much money to go to a game. Even now I choose to spend my money elsewhere-in fact "The Skeeters" AAA club down in Sugarland Texas are a lot more fun than the Astros for pennies on the dollar. And I only go about once a year-I just don't care about pro sports other than pulling for a Jayhawk at that level.
Seriously these guys that try to raise a stink late in life.
If there was a system in place and you worked it-and then came out years later and NOW you want to point fingers???
I have posted here that I was a student athlete from a great SMN school. I was an A student in English there but needed help to adjust to a KU English prof-finished with a "B" thankfully I had a KU athletics tutor-and was in sessions with Norm Cook and Donnie Von Moore who needed more help than me but were in class and working hard. I don't know about the pud course work- I know those boys were struggling but they were not taking basket weaving 15 hours a semester. I hope KU is still on the up and up
