Bad habits left over from the Tech game. JW + Juando = 52% of the total team shots. 9 for 30. No passing. All one on one. Joe took more shots than Gradey. The early clinching allowed us to cakewalk. We were walking zombies- no energy, no fire in the belly. Here's the good news: these guys have bought themselves 4 days of pure hell from Bill. This terrible loss could be a springboard that reenergizes the team. Hopefully, we're now through the personal accolades part of the season, and we can get back to playing together as a team. Maybe even pass the ball, and move without the ball, etc.

To me, I think it is time for Bill to take a step back and get this team playing "fun" basketball again. Free and easy ball. I don't what they need is to get drilled by Bill for 4 days.

He needs these guys to get some confidence and swagger back on the offensive side of the ball.

I think my words might've conjured visions of browbeating and boot camps- which was not my intent...lol. I don't mean he'll literally make them run laps or anything, but he will get their attention, get their focus, and get them back to playing winning basketball. I predict we will see a much better defensive team as well as a much better approach on offense in the conference tourney.

@Jethro we are a bad team when Jwil is shooting it 15 plus times to get 20 points

I wouldn't go that far. We've won a slew of games shooting not so good. We're not elite, though.

We didn't play together as a team. They aren't setting each other up for the best shot. Too much hero ball. I expect a much crisper effort in the B12 tourney.

Bill Self for COY • Mar 03, 2023 03:15 PM

@kjayhawks said in Bill Self for COY:

Not to take anything away from Tang but he only retained 2 players from last years roster, he didn’t take a 14-17 team and coach them up. He used the portal to build his roster. TJ did the same thing last season in Ames and hasn’t really retained that magic this season. Now that shouldn’t impact this years COY but let’s pump the brakes before y’all build a statute of him. Not sure I’ve seen a team lose as you said 70% of its scoring, 3 starters and the first 2 guys off the bench and end up back as a number 1 seed after winning it all. Winning the toughest conference in the land by a few games, not sure I’ve seen it before or will see it again is my point.

Above is my response to KSU fans all the sudden thinking Tang is better than Self. ESPN radio talked about how he was hands down the greatest regular season coach of all time which I agree with. I personally don’t think in a single elimination tournament you go off of it entirely. The tournament is a lot about viewership on the men’s side. If they changed it like the women’s tournament and had teams host the first 2 rounds you wouldn’t see the upset we do. I’ve always said do that and then have the sweet 16 be double elimination at a neutral site. Then you know who the best team is most years. Downside to that is we probably don’t win it last season but probably have more titles with the 07,08,11,13,16 and 20(if they played it) teams playing.

Their coach of the year fantasy is better than their "we're a football powerhouse for winning the conference" fantasy. You win 1 game against a team you lost to earlier in the season. You're passed over for the playoffs, then you get humiliated by Alabama. Yet, you take a barnstorming tour all over the state, dragging your conference trophy around even though you just embarrassed yourself on national tv. The most irrational, ignorant fanbase in all of sports.

Hanni & Gurly brought this up post game last night - -weird year - -Stating that the teams widely considered non factors for championship gave us more trouble at home then the true title contenders.

At the phog we struggled with Okie State ( 69-67 ) - -Oklahoma ( 79-75 )- - Iowa St ( 62-60 )- - WV ( 76-74 ) & - -Texas Tech ( 67-63 )

Where as with the Serious title contenders was easier at home - - -K/State - - ( 90-78 ) - -Texas- - ( 88-80 )- - Baylor- - ( 87-71 ) - -just really weird.

Guess we need to consider ourselves fortunate things came out the way they did. - -could of easily possibly three more losses

They amp up, and amp down. If every game is national championship caliber max effort, then we have a burned out team come tournament time. Bill has tried that method before, and years ago we would come out flat as pancake in the tournament.

How we feelin’ about March • Mar 01, 2023 11:08 PM

8/9's I'd prefer not to play:

Arkansas

Illinois

4/5's I'd prefer not to play:

UCONN (although Bill vs. Hurley is a 10 pt advantage for us)

That's about it.

I think it's almost 100% certain that UCLA will be the 2 seed in our region. That doesn't bother me a bit. The only way that doesn't happen is if Purdue keeps losing, and plays their way to the 2 line. Then Purdue would be our number 2 because UCLA would be a number 1. I'm fine with that, too.

It would be great to get the #1 in the MW and play in KC.

@cragarhawk It’s like the year KU had Wiggins and Embiid. KU was ranked high even though they lost nearly all the games to the top ranked teams that year. -Almost all the losses were to good teams, but you’d think you’d have to beat one to earn a high ranking yourself.

Being a Kansas homer I still think with a healthy Embiid KU makes noise that March.

No point guard.

Another little tid bit of information about the consistency oh KU . KU has 20 more wins against top 25 teams then any other School in the last Decade.

In the last Decade KU has 80 wins - -Michigan State has 60 - Other Schools of interest Duke & Baylor have 59 - -KU has 21 more wins then Duke - - 29 more wins then Carolina - -& 37 more wins against top 25 Schools then Kentucky in the last Decade - - got to love those numbers

The Baylor media stooges speculated we only were that far ahead because "we won them all at home". Kind of a Scott Drew whiny bitch extension argument. Now they stand corrected. Hard to deal with that level of ignorance.

I hope we can find 2 wing scorers, that's what this team will need unless Kev returns.

I was going to edit again and comment on this more.

I think it's likely the staff is pretty happy with our post situation. If Zach goes you probably portal for a guy but KJ/Udeh/Zuby is a nice group. The big thing is Jalen and Gradey are leaving so we need shot takers. With the scholarship reduction down to 12 it really is hard to find room for a developmental big. Plus Evans might want to play immediately as well. The primary focus has to be the starting 4.

Is it an impossibility that KJ works on his shooting and steps out to the 4?

I really don't understand this idea that KJ can't be effective at the 4 unless he can shoot the 3. He has range to the free throw line and creates amazingly well on the short roll. Bill was able to find ways to get Marcus Garrett downhill. I think he can probably do the same for KJ...

To further my point, KU is 250th in 3PA this season. And not particularly effective at a .354 mark (thanks Gradey). On the contrary, we are 51st in 2PA on the season. Teams don't even really guard Kev from 3. It isn't like we are watching an offensive juggernaut this season. We are watching a team that passes the ball exceptionally well, runs in transition well, and plays very good defense. I don't know how KJ at the 4 changes any of that.

That was my thought.

We just set a new national record by winning our 15th Quad 1 win in a single season. We're 15-5 in Quad 1 games. We have played the toughest schedule in all of college basketball by far. 2nd place has 10 Quad 1 wins. We are winning what they are saying is the toughest conference in college basketball in the last 20 years.

West Virginia is ranked 20th on Kenpom. West Virginia has played the 5th toughest schedule in college basketball. They aren't a bottom feeder. They are in the toughest conference in college basketball in the last 20 years. The first time we played them, they didn't have a point guard. This time they did.

All I'm going to add is my sincere thanks to this coach and this team for a truly amazing job this year. To lose 6 of your top 8 scorers... to win 24 games playing the toughest schedule in America, to be in first place in the toughest conference in college basketball in the last 20 years and in position to win Bill's 17th conference title in his 20 years, to be ranked in the Top 3 (after winning a national championship the year before) is truly an incredible accomplishment. My opinion is we're playing with house money, so every victory is a blessing.
