CAM ALERT MAYBE

I knew I couldn’t watch this game without drinking.

Keys to the game:

  • Play more gooder.
  • scorer morer
Other games • Feb 07, 2023 12:39 AM

Duke has 2 legit footers, and Ryan Young is still getting 20mpg 😂😂😂

Blake’s has to be one of the least efficient players in America, getting 17 mpg lmao.

Other games • Feb 07, 2023 12:36 AM

Because this is a Calipari squandering of talent… not exactly “poor.”

Put Lively on like any other team in America and they are top 25. Dude is blocking 5+ shots per 40.

They are letting Filipowski shoot four 3s per game at a .289 clip.

I legitimately can’t figure out what they are doing. All of the pieces are there.

Other games • Feb 07, 2023 12:31 AM

@Jethro what do you mean by poor?

Tonight's Game vs Texas • Feb 06, 2023 06:55 PM

Keys to tonight's game:

Definsively:
- Force Hunter to make threes. Sag off of him big time.
- Guard Timmy Allen. He ate our lunch last year in Austin. We held him to 9 when we won at home.
- Double Disu in the post. I don't think KJ can guard him by himself.

Offensively:
- Take care of the damn ball. We want fewer than 12 turnovers.
- Shoot the ball if you are open, and play through some contact. We get scared to finish at the rim for some reason. (Looking at you Kev, Juan and Bobby).

It would be nice to see Gradey and Kev find that stroke again, but clearly we cant count on that. So ultimately I just want us to focus on what we can control. Play aggressively on offense, and either get layups or draw fouls.

I definitely trust Bill to get this group back on track this next month. We saw how good they could be at times. Just have to get that swagger back.

Tonight's Game vs Texas • Feb 06, 2023 06:25 PM

@rockchalkjayhawk I think playing D1 basketball is a huge adjustment for most of these guys. It clearly looks like he is playing in slow motion out there. Either he is injured, his motor isn't what scouts thought, or he is having trouble adjusting to the speed of the game. Or perhaps a mixture of all of the 3.

I REALLY hope he is back next season. But every game that goes by that hope dims just a bit.

Tonight's Game vs Texas • Feb 06, 2023 06:19 PM

@Jethro I genuinely like the matchup for us. I think them not having a great scorer in the post helps us a lot.

But I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't worried about getting a lead early. We will need to score points tonight to keep up. Because Texas well. We don't even get the advantage of UT having to travel because they got to play KSU Saturday. Should be as rested of a UT team as they could be for a Big Monday road game...

Tonight's Game vs Texas • Feb 06, 2023 05:02 PM

@BeddieKU23 Seems pretty clear that MJ doesn't fit here. I fully expect him to be gone after the season.

Maybe I'm wrong, because back issues are both nagging and difficult to deal with. But it just has the feeling where MJ will benefit from a fresh start.

It is unfortunate, because I'm sure by the time he is a senior somewhere he will be quite a player.

Fran Hate Us game chat • Feb 06, 2023 12:48 AM

@BeddieKU23 Yea I totally forgot about the guard post ups. Maybe we need to go back to that with Kev early to get him engaged.

The offense has definitely gotten stale.

Fran Hate Us game chat • Feb 05, 2023 09:12 PM

@BeddieKU23 don’t have anyone you can force feed to get a basket.

No Frank type of guard you can uso.

No Big. Oh how I miss Dave, and I never expected to say that.

No use crying over spilled milk. I learned last year you can't give up on a team because you never know when they could take off. Myself, I can't wait until we go to the expanded basketball conference schedule next year. This is the downside of being in the best conference in basketball. 2nd game in a row against a Top 10ish team. And now we have a 3rd game against a Top 10 team 2 days later. You're playing Top 10 teams every game.

I remember when the Big East was the Big East, and considered to be the best conference in basketball. They would slug through so many big conference games, they'd be all bruised and beat up by the end of the season. Give me a home game against BYU / UCF in between these Top 10 gladiator fights.

That Big East won 3 nattys… UConn x 2 and Cuse.

This DEEP run of B12 has produced 2 nattys and 2020 KU and Baylor were two of the favorites.

The conference schedule is a grind, but I wouldn’t say it is bad for us in the long run. This is just an exceptional year where bottom feeders hired good coaches. We need a few guys to get poached 😂

UNC is in serious trouble of missing the tourney. Absolute must win for them Tuesday at Wake

Fran Hate Us game chat • Feb 04, 2023 11:06 PM

You’re just not going to win when your opponent shoots 17 more shots than you do. Rebounding was bad. Defense was bad. Offensively we pass the ball too much while in the air and try to make the “extra” pass too much.

If you’re open shoot the ball.

Would have like to see Bill go with a “big” lineup today for a bit with KJ at the 4 and Udeh at the 5. I think it lets you post KJ up and offers a better rebound and defensive matchup.

This was always going to be a tough game. Was an L on the books already. Show up Monday. I actually like the matchup against UT.

2022-23 stats-PER, Kenpom etc • Feb 03, 2023 06:22 PM

@BeddieKU23 I really hadn't paid attention to them. I just see the Kenpom stuff and can't help but see that Marquette team stick out...

I'll have to make a point to watch a Marquette game before March.

2022-23 stats-PER, Kenpom etc • Feb 03, 2023 06:10 PM

@Jethro Maybe the pressure to showcase those guys for the NBA caused him to not make the team as good as it could be too. That is a tough thing to balance. Bill Self gets knocked for NOT doing a good job of this, and that's part of the reason he doesn't get nearly as many top 5 guys anymore. It really takes special freshman to play for Bill Self early.

I feel like anyone who is willing to get into bed with OADs understands that you have to do that to an extent though. Selling your soul a bit to get talent in the door.

2022-23 stats-PER, Kenpom etc • Feb 03, 2023 05:01 PM

Weird Kenpom thing this year (to me) is Shaka Smart coaching the best offensive team in basketball. Incredibly efficient scoring. Was always a "defense first" coach, at least how people looked at him after VCU.

Still can't figure out why he struggled so much at UT. Apparently not just a one-trick pony, and not a bad coach. I think he suffered a bit from turnover. Mo Bamba, Jarrett Allen, Jaxson Hayes, etc. Not excusing his inability to win despite landing elite talent, but certainly weird to see him succeed elsewhere.

Sunflower Showdown Redeux • Feb 01, 2023 12:15 PM

@Jayblaze getting 16ish points from our big men has been about the right number all season when we are playing well.

KJ only got 4 in both of the losses to TCU and Baylor. So you’re right, when the bigs don’t score we definitely struggle. But last night we really did get about our season average, it just took a lot of guys to do it 😂

Sunflower Showdown Redeux • Feb 01, 2023 12:08 PM

@Jayblaze said in Sunflower Showdown Redeux:

@DCHawker KJ on the bench meant 👎 action in the paint. Gonna need Udeh to be a more reliable backup.

He had 6 rebounds and 3 blocks in 10 minutes. I don’t know what more you can ask of a freshman big man.

And then we were +18 on the floor with Zach last night.

If we get this level of play from the backups most nights we are going to be tough to beat.

The betting line feels like a trap. My instinct is to hammer KSU.

The way we've played at home this season... yikes.

I do however think KSU is due for a major regression and could easily drop 5 or 6 of these final 10 games.

Yeah I really don't know. Some models still don't love KSU but they are tough and just keep winning. Their top 2 is really nice and the roleplayers can all actually play.

I just feel like they’ve been on the positive side of poor shooting more nights than not. We are making shots right now, but it isn’t like we aren’t getting wide open looks.

They’ve caught almost everyone on poor shooting nights.

2023 B12 Schedule • Jan 31, 2023 09:06 PM

Looking even a little bit closer I love the schedule even more.

We get UT after they play Bama on the road and Baylor on the road. Wouldn't expect them to be 100% healthy, and at the very least banged up after two physical games.

We get to play OU after a bye week at home. Should be fresh and should have a really solid gameplan.

KSU at home and TTU at home is huge too. If you were going to write a script for how KU wins the B12, it is probably pretty damn close to this schedule...

2023 B12 Schedule • Jan 31, 2023 07:25 PM

As of today -

  • MSU - W
  • Illinois - W - but tough
  • @ Nevada - W
  • BYU - W
  • @ UT - L
  • UCF - W
  • @OSU - W
  • BYE
  • OU - L
  • @ ISU - W
  • TTU - W
  • KSU - W
  • @ Cin - W

Optimistic, but I have really high hopes for this team. Another year in the weight room. Another year in the same offense with the same QB with the same OL. I think they added good bodies on the DL. I think the DB room is probably going to be one of the best in the B12 this year.

Biggest question mark is the DL and LB rooms. I'm not sure we did enough to address either, but its going to be interesting to see if those groups can develop/improve over last season.

More than anything, it will be nice to have a team that comes in with supreme confidence that they can compete with anyone. Nobody is looking at their schedule and guaranteeing a win.

Sunflower Showdown Redeux • Jan 31, 2023 05:23 PM

Hawks in a blowout. Sills doesn’t go for 20. Gradey finds his stroke in friendly confines. McCullar has “it” going again. KJ finishes at the rim.

I thought we did everything we could to lose the last one and that KSU played well. KU plays a halfway decent game and we win by 12.

@BeddieKU23 For some reason I thought back. Not sure why now... Someone had a back injury this year. Either way a bummer.

KU-UK Game Chat • Jan 30, 2023 08:15 PM

Unfortunate for Zuby. Likely will mean his season is over if I were guessing. Back issues are hard for anyone to overcome in a short period of time, but especially for guys his size.

Welcome Elmarko Jackson! • Jan 30, 2023 03:08 PM

Some people are not going to like my comparison (though I love it), but he gives me Tyshawn Taylor vibes. Decent shooter. Will be able to take his man off the bounce whenever he wants. But he is going to have moments where you scratch your head and wonder what the hell he was thinking.

Tyshawn was an All-American as a Senior and legitimately dominated the 2nd half of the season in that National Championship runner up 2012 team and he went on to play meaningful minutes in the NBA. So to me that is no slouch comparison... I know Tyshawn made some people want to pull their hair out, but overall he was a really solid player for KU. If we get that from Elmarko I'll be super happy.

Little bird will have to leave the nest to prove he can do it though. I like him, but he’s got to either leave and try to build his own resume or stay a long-time assistant. I do think he is going to get a chance to be a head coach soon.

Aaron Miles would interest me, but I don’t like that almost all of his experience is NBA much like Vaughn.

@Crimsonorblue22 makes it hard to let a guy go if he isn’t performing up to expectations when you go legacy hire imo.

I’d obviously love a Jayhawk to do it and be great lol. But easier said than done…

@BShark Won’t Cal be pretty expensive to get rid of for a couple more years due to his “lifetime” contract? UK fans are talking more 2024 being his last season. (The little chatter I’ve seen)

Seen a fair bit of talk for after this year or next. Common thing is certainly that people who matter want him out.

It just has all of the feelings and signs of a relationship that is ending in the near future. I think the money works itself out.

This year he has clearly shown his inability to coach. Not getting nearly enough from Toppin. Starting Wheeler. Getting nothing from Fredrick.

And I think other schools should want a polarizing guy like him to come in and bring recruits.

A renegotiated buyout that lets Cal still get his money but leave before it turns toxic makes sense for both parties.
