I can remember Admin/Coaches saying they spend a lot of time going over what's permissible and what's not. HCBS has spoke about this when something else was alleged (McLemore?). Didn't HCBS say you can't follow everyone around 24/7?

You have to hope that kids realize the implications that can befall them or the program if they fail to follow the rules.

No one knows for sure so I am going to wait until the facts come out.

Ellis, Zeigler Earn First Weekly Awards Of March

March 02, 2015

Junior forward Perry Ellis (Kansas) and senior guard Trey Zeigler (TCU) are the latest student-athletes to be named Phillips 66 Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week. Ellis is recognized for the third time in 2014-15 and second time in the past three weeks, while Zeigler is the first player from TCU to earn a weekly accolade this season.

Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week

Perry Ellis, Kansas, F, Jr., 6-8, 225, Wichita, Kan./Wichita Heights
Ellis averaged a double-double with 26.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game as the Jayhawks split contests against K-State and Texas. The junior forward opened the week by scoring 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting versus the Wildcats in Manhattan, adding nine rebounds and two steals. He then recorded his seventh double-double of the year with 28 points and 13 boards against the Longhorns. Ellis, who earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors last week, has scored 20 points or more in three straight outings.

This is his 3rd time this year.

@nuleafjhawk Can't feel sorry for him as each season round about mid-February his players do not like nor listen to him. He constantly throws them under the bus and never acknowledges any issues with his coaching talent or game situations. People here have seen it season after season. When you have so many kids transfer year after year that speaks volumes about a coach and the program it runs. People here cannot understand why his contract was extended and want him gone.

Historic Allen Fieldhouse Celebrating 60 Years

Kansas is currently playing its 60th season in historic Allen Fieldhouse, which has been deemed the greatest place to watch a college basketball game. Dedicated on March 1, 1955, in a 77-67 win against rival Kansas State, here are some notables regarding Allen Fieldhouse:

•Allen Fieldhouse has sold out each of its last 225 games back to the 2001-02 season.

•Kansas won its 700th regular-season game in Allen Fieldhouse with an 80-63 victory against ULM on Nov. 18, 2013. KU is 726-109 all-time in the venue.

•Five of the eight KU head coaches have coached in Allen Fieldhouse. Ted Owens has the most victories with 206, followed by Roy Williams (201), Bill Self (188), Larry Brown (71), Dick Harp (51) and Phog Allen (9).

•Starting with Wilt Chamberlain in 1957, 12 of KU's NCAA-leading 28 Consensus All-American First Team selections played in Allen Fieldhouse.

•Kansas has led its league in home attendance each of the last 27 seasons dating back to 1986-87 and 32 times in the last 36 years.

•KU is second all-time winningest program in NCAA Division I history with 2,148 wins and the Jayhawks won victories 1,000, 1,100, 1,200, 1,300, 1,400 and 1,900 in Allen Fieldhouse. The 1,900th all-time win also won the 2007 Big 12 regular-season title outright.

•Kansas has won 31-straight home season finales in Allen Fieldhouse, including 30 consecutive Senior Nights. In 2006-07, Kansas did not have a senior on its roster.

•From 2006-13 Kansas won 68-straight games against non-conference competition in Allen Fieldhouse.

•Self is 188-9 in games played at Allen Fieldhouse for a 95.4 winning percentage, which includes four of Kansas' 17 undefeated home seasons.

•Self's Big 12 regular-season titles (10) are more than his home losses while at Kansas (9).

•Kansas' school-record 69-game home-court winning streak from Feb. 7, 2007 to Jan. 22, 2011, led the nation for more than two seasons and ranks 11th all-time in the NCAA records book.

•KU's current 22-game winning streak inside Allen Fieldhouse ranks 11th on the school's all-time home-court win streak list and is the third longest in the Self era.

•Kansas is 130-3 in Allen Fieldhouse in its last 133 games.

I just called the local FM sports talk radio station (104.9 The Horn) and asked them whether or not Holmes was going to get to play because of the flagrant 2 and the producer told me that "It was certainly possible but we haven't heard anything one way or the other and as soon as we do, we'll be sure to announce it."

Nothing on the UT site either.

GameDay Quick Facts

• TELEVISION: The game will be televised nationally by ESPN. Dan Shulman (pxp), Jay Bilas (analyst) and Shannon Spake (reporter) will call the action.

KANSAS SERIES INFO:

• Kansas leads, 24-8. Last meeting: Kansas 75-62 (Jan. 24, 2015; Austin).

• Saturday's contest marks the 33rd meeting between Texas and Kansas.

• The Jayhawks hold a 24-8 lead in the all-time series that dates back to a 36-34 Texas win in Austin on Dec. 16, 1938. UT was coached by Jack Gray and KU by Dr. "Phog" Allen.

Notables

• BARNES GOES FOR 400TH win AT TEXAS: With a win in Lawrence, head coach Rick Barnes would become just the NINTH active NCAA Div I coach to reach the 400-win milestone at his CURRENT school.

• BLOCK PARTY: Texas set a new team single-season mark for most blocked shots (207 through first 28 games) in Tuesday's loss at No. 20/19 West Virginia. The Horns rank FIRST nationally in blocks per game (7.4 bpg) through games of Feb. 24.

• YANCY ON A ROLL: Sophomore guard Kendal Yancy has averaged 17.3 ppg and 5.0 rpg in 32.3 mpg over the last three contests while hitting 19-of-39 (.487) field goals, including 9-of-20 (.450) from three-point range.

**Kelly needs to guard Yancy and not let him get any open shots. **

Our crowd will give us +5 points so I'll go 75-59 KU.

PLAYER-ONLY MEETING. • Feb 27, 2015 12:31 AM

Kansas University sophomore point guard Frank Mason III said the Jayhawks held a players-only meeting on Tuesday night at Jayhawker Towers in the wake of Monday’s 70-63 loss to Kansas State in Manhattan.

The meeting was called by Perry Ellis and Wayne Selden.

“Just getting back on the right page,” Mason said of the purpose of the meeting.

“We obviously don’t want to be the team to mess up the Big 12 streak (10 straight titles). So we just got together (to) talk about the things we need to do, becoming better on the defensive end, just doing everything coach needs us to do.”

The loss to K-State dropped (22-6, 11-4) KU into a tie (in the loss column) with Iowa State in the Big 12 race. However, Baylor beat Iowa State on Wednesday night in Ames, meaning KU again holds a one-game lead over ISU, West Virginia and Oklahoma with three games remaining.

“Different guys stepped up, said different things, had their own opinions,” Mason said of the players meeting. “We just all took it and tried to make it positive and make the change.”

More on the meeting and KU basketball in Friday’s Journal-World and on kusports.com.

They didn't play that poorly. Problem was Fred waited too long to stop the 12-2 run and its damage was done. Then we couldn't get a rebound or a defensive stop. Turned the ball over severall times, and Niang tried to be the hero and forced a bunch of garbage at the end. Fell apart in the last 8 minutes.

OK KU

The gift is wrapped, the conference title is yours again. Congrats. Now step up, take advantage of the great March Maddness seeding and represent the conference. Your national reputation for great seeds and early chokes can be muted a little this year. Your all time average high seeds and less than 2 wins per tournament reflects poorly on us all.

And say they do lose.. ISU has to win 3 in a row just to tie. This thing is Kansas' all the way. Oklahoma has a better chance. 2 home games and a road game at ISU, which Baylor just proved is a place you can win. OU can shoot and we don't defend the 3. Baylor part 2 unless we actually guard somebody.

Nice made-up statistic there. The actual statistics are this: **KU has appeared in the NCAA tournament 43 times and has 96 tournament wins. That is 2.23 wins per tournament. And keep in mind that this includes tournament appearances during the era when just making it to the tournament was a tremendous achievement because only 8 teams did. KU's win percentage in the tournament is 69.6% (6th best). **

Step up buttercup, make us proud.

KU has made the Sweet 16 in 6 out of 8 years and has made the championship game twice in that time. They've made the Elite Eight 4 out of the last 8 years.

I hate KU just as much as anyone, but their postseason reputation is just based on narratives from the media and a couple bad losses.

And one final one:

Re: OK KU

Who cares? They are the best program in the conference and that is not going to change this year. I hate KU as well, but I hope they go far in the tourney.

From the paper's Sports Writer:

Golden’s Nuggets: Haven’t we seen this before, Texas basketball?

Posted: 5:22 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2015

By Cedric Golden - American-Statesman Staff

Rick Barnes’ team has mastered the art of playing to the competition, and not in a good way. The Longhorns have been involved in entertaining contests, but one quick glance at the schedule reveals that Texas has beaten only one good team all season, and that’s the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Since taking that 77-50 home win on Jan. 17, Texas has lost six of its last nine games, three by three points or fewer. Saturday’s loss to Iowa State stung because this team is wasting some all-world ball from sophomore guard Kendal Yancy, who has become a real force while more experienced players like Jon Holmes and Cam Ridley aren’t giving the Horns the offense they need to be a legitimate postseason contender, or even a postseason participant at this rate.

If Barnes were summoned to the offices of the NCAA tournament selection committee and asked to plead his case for Texas’ inclusion — aside from being a member of the deepest league in the country — he would be hard-pressed to point to more than one signature win.

There’s opportunity Tuesday at West Virginia and Saturday at league-leading Kansas. This is where going 0-4 against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State kills the Horns. Last week’s late collapse in Norman is the one that will keep Barnes awake this offseason if Texas finds itself back in the NIT or worse.

With the Longhorns having four games left and at 6-8 in conference play, I can’t see them going any worse than 8-10 and still getting in without winning the Big 12 tournament. It’s an all too familiar scenario for Texas hoops fans: A great start followed by a late-season swoon. With their 3-8 record in their last 11 games, it’s difficult to envision the Horns putting it together over the next couple of weeks.

@Kip_McSmithers But But But Jon Holmes went into the WV locker room after the game and apologized to the whole team. At least that's how they played it here on all the sports broadcasts last night. That made it nicey nice in their eyes.

Rick Barnes is literally playing the next 3 games for his coaching job. No one in Austin believes they can beat us. He has proven again that he does less with all the talent. Javan Felix is scared that one more concussion will end his career and Taylor is trying to do way too much by himself and not feeding the post. Yancy has stepped up so maybe Kelly guards him. I just don't think we lose at home especially after Monday. We have to come out and pound them from the get go and not let up.

Do we root for Baylor tonight? • Feb 26, 2015 04:19 AM

Baylor held Iowa State to just four points in the final 6:26, and its hot streak helped the Bears sweep the Cyclones for the first time.

TIP-INS:

Iowa State: This was the first loss to Baylor at home in 13 tries for the Cyclones...Dustin Hogue committed three turnovers in the first four minutes of the second half.

Baylor: The Bears were 7 of 13 on 3s in the first half but just 3 of 7 from the line. They led 40-37 at halftime...Coach Scott Drew used all of his second-half timeouts in less than 12 minutes.

UP NEXT

Iowa State travels to Kansas State on Saturday.

Baylor hosts West Virginia on Saturday.

OU has TCU who beat Tech tonight rather handily.

Wildcat Fans are a Disgrace

Gentlemen:

As a former resident of Leavenworth, Kansas, I was appalled at the vulgar words (heard and seen numerous times) and actions by the Wildcat fans at the game last night that my children and I were subjected to. It sheds a VERY HARSH LIGHT on your program and you and your fans should be ashamed of themselves. Your fans should act with some graciousness and not show themselves to be void of any regard for the safety of the Jayhawk players and coaches and fellow fans. It only points to the losing season you have this year.

I have since filed a complaint with the FEC, ESPN and am doing so here now with you. I will never try to defend any Wildcat team in the future. You don’t represent the Big 12 and its ethics.

That student that purposely ran into Jamari Traylor needs to be found, forced to publicly apologize to Kansas University and its fans and lose his rights to ever attend any games in the future.

KState Article • Feb 19, 2015 12:56 PM

From FoxSports Kansas City:

K-State played like it would rather read Norm MacDonald's tweets than listen to Weber

Sean Keeler

FOX Sports Kansas City

FEB 19, 2015 12:00a ET

Trailing 35-15 at the half to Texas Christian might be understandable, even a little palatable.

If this were football.

Alas, it was a frigid Wednesday in February, on a high-school gym floor in Texas, at a Big 12 basketball showdown between one purple team with little hoops history, finding its feet, and another with a proud basketball legacy content to shoot off toe after toe with a sawed-off 12 gauge.

We would say Kansas State (the one with the shotgun and the self-inflicted wounds) ran into a buzzsaw, falling 69-55 at TCU. But that's not exactly right, either: "Running" would infer desire or passion or hunger or will or any gutsy adjective of your preference.

The Horned Frogs (16-10, 3-10 Big 12) are better than you think -- or hope, in this case -- but the fact remains:

It takes some effort to get smoked in Fort Worth.

Or, in the case of Bruce Weber's Wildcats (13-14, 6-eight), a curious and disheartening lack thereof.

"I just want guys that care," Weber told reporters after the game, basically throwing the doors open on a locker room presumed, at present, to be somewhat dysfunctional. "That's all I want: Guys that care and want to play for K-State."

If there was a bus in the back of the gym, right then and there, the coach might have taken that moment to throw half his team under it.

The disconnect between Weber and his kids -- or a segment of them, at least -- is out in the open now, a fissure for all the world to see. The Wildcats missed 20 of their first 24 attempts from the floor and looked, senior Nino Williams (14 points, 10 rebounds) and freshman guard Tre Harris (14 points, two treys off the bench) notwithstanding, as if they'd rather have spent the evening reading Norm MacDonald's Twitter feed than having to worry about running some kind of offense against TCU.

Which raises its own set of soap-opera plot twists, not the least of which include whether Weber can get his guys to circle the wagons again -- league-leading Kansas visits next Monday in what could be one of the last serious chances to win back some fan goodwill, followed by league-title-chasing Iowa State on Feb. 28 -- or if his team has shut him out for good; what the fallout will be, in terms of roster and/or staff, coming off a season in which the 19-21 expected wins are just about off the table, mathematically; and, most critically, what will become of the on-again, off-again, on-again, off-again relationship between Weber and his star wing guard, Marcus Foster.

One week, Foster sinks the Sooners; the next, red flags pop up like dandelions.

Again, the sophomore didn't start. Again, he didn't appear to respond to not starting all that, shall we say, comfortably (one-for-six shooting, one-for-five from beyond the arc, five points).

The 'Cats are remarkably easy to anticipate in this particular regard: When no. 2 nets 12 points or more, they're 11-6. When it's 11 or less, they're 2-5; when he's suspended, 0-3.

Maybe the answer, if answers will salvage anything at this point, is more of Harris, the 6-foot-5 Illinois native with the shooter's roll (nine-for-20 beyond the arc in Big 12 contests), one of the few bright spots of a discouraging four weeks.

It's worth noting that with Harris pulling the sled, the Wildcats opened the second half on a 15-2 run, scoring as many points in the first six minutes of the second period as they had the entire 20 minutes of the first. The freshman's layup with 14:11 left in the contest even shaved the Frogs' cushion to 37-30.

Thomas Gipson's layup pulled the 'Cats to within seven again, 41-34, but the hosts got up after the counterpunching and landed more body blows, stringing together a 9-1 run to push the score to 50-35 with 8:08 left and prompt a Weber timeout.

Whether anyone on that bench was actually listening at that point, well -- there's the rub. In Weber's defense, it's hard to sugarcoat a tilt in which you end the first half by not scoring the final seven minutes and 47 seconds, and by not hitting a field goal for the final 9:42.

That takes some effort, too.

Remember: Anger may be constructive, but apathy is fatal. K-State brass can endure a line of fans bringing torches to Bramlage Coliseum, snarling at Weber and gnashing teeth over a season gone south. It's when they stop bringing themselves to games that the real problems start.

RPI - Seeding • Feb 19, 2015 12:46 PM

From FoxSports KC:

If KU nets No. 1 seed, it can thank its schedule -- the toughest in Big 12 history

Sean Keeler

FOX Sports Kansas City

FEB 18, 2015 4:03p ET

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- With less than a month left until Selection Sunday, the forecast in Lawrence is the same as it ever was: The Kansas Jayhawks (21-5, 10-3 Big 12) appear earmarked, at worst, for another No. 2 seed in the Big Dance, a journey that figures to start in Omaha.

But if KU should happen to creep into the conversation as a 1 seed -- and it might have to win out in order to move up a peg -- it'll have its dance card to thank.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Jayhawks rank No. 1 in the country in terms of opponent strength of schedule -- by the Ratings Percentage Index, Ken Pomeroy, anybody with a calculator and a pulse. But KU hasn't just played the toughest schedule in the country: According to at least one prominent database, it's in the back nine of the single-toughest schedule in the last 35 years of the program -- and the single-toughest slate in the short history of the Big 12, which opened for basketball business in the winter of 1995-96.

Sports-Reference.com keeps a running tab of Division I college basketball teams' strength of schedule (SOS) dating back to 1979, assigning a numerical rating -- 0.0 is considered average, and 2.0 through 8.0 are generally typical -- relative to the quality of the opposition, with non-Division I foes being thrown out of the calculation. S-R.com rates the '14-15 Jayhawks as having weathered a 12.4 strength of schedule so far, tops in the nation and the most challenging under coach Bill Self, besting the old mark of 11.4 set during the short-lived "Wiggins Era" of last winter, as well as the slate played by Roy Williams' 1990-91 national runners-up (11.37).

If the modern NFL timeline starts with the AFL-NFL merger of 1970, the modern college basketball era coincides with the Bird-vs.-Magic, Indiana State-Michigan State national championship showdown of spring 1979. The Jayhawks' 12.4 SOS rank is the second highest among Big 12/Big Eight programs dating to '79-80, topped only by the 13.1 score posted by Johnny Orr's Iowa State Cyclones in 1990-91.

Rating systems aren't universal in their love for KU's performances -- lopsided losses to Kentucky and Temple tend to take a big bite out of the bytes -- but they're fairly uniform in their regard for the Jayhawks' slate. Another useful metrics site, TeamRankings.com, tracks SOS for all games played between Division I opponents dating to 1997-98. KU's .643 score this winter isn't just the highest in the country -- it's the highest score of any Division I school over the past 18 seasons.

"A lot depends on how we do nonconference," Self offered up, almost prophetically, during Big 12 Media Day late last fall. "Let's just face it: We need to play well nonconference, because that sets your RPI up for the entire year."

And it has. The Jayhawks hit the midweek ranked first in overall RPI, much to the annoyance of fans of, say, Kentucky (26-0) and Virginia (24-1). But the RPI -- it's just a tool, remember, one of many considered by the highbrows on the NCAA Tournament selection committee -- puts its weight on the quality of the teams you've beaten and the quality of the teams those teams have beaten, regardless of the margin, with greater weight on road victories.

The top-ranked, unbeaten Wildcats, as of Wednesday, have faced six foes ranked 180th or lower in the RPI (including Missouri -- ranked 189th -- twice). The Cavaliers have played four, with one more (Virginia Tech, 222nd) coming up.

KU? None.

In fact, the worst RPI team on Self's schedule is a league foe his squad has already beaten twice -- Texas Tech (rank: 163). The Jayhawks played Kentucky (RPI rank: 2) and Michigan State on neutral courts, splitting the two contest; beat Utah (ninth) on a semi-home court (Sprint Center); and won at Georgetown (23rd).

The RPI doesn't care that the Jayhawks fell by a combined 57 points to UK and Temple. It only cares that the 'Cats and Owls keep winning. Ironically, Kentucky's winning percentage (1.000) is doing more for the Kansas' RPI than what beating the Jayhawks did for the 'Cats. As far as the computers are concerned, a rising Big Blue tide lifts all boats -- KU's included.

Anybody see the violations by WVU in no more than 14 sports - illegal texting was mentioned?

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The NCAA placed West Virginia's athletic department on two years' probation Wednesday for recruiting violations involving illegal text messages and phone calls in 14 sports.

The NCAA said a Division I infractions committee determined that coaches in 14 sports sent impermissible texts and made phone calls to prospects and parents between June 2010 and February 2013. Most of the infractions occurred in women's gymnastics, football, women's basketball and women's soccer.

Most of the women's gymnastics violations were committed by one assistant coach, who was placed under a one-year show-cause penalty, cannot recruit during a 30-day signing period and must attend an NCAA regional rules seminar.

The committee determined that infractions in other sports were limited.

The NCAA said several coaches involved in the violations believed there was a misunderstanding in some of the recruiting communication rules.

"Additionally, the school did not fully understand how to use compliance software it purchased to monitor phone and text activity," the NCAA said. "It wasn't until the software company updated the software that the school learned of the violations."

The NCAA said the violations occurred while the school was on two years' probation from a previous infractions case involving out-of-season coaching and the use of non-coaching staff to work with players.

West Virginia athletic director Shane Lyons was named last month to succeed Oliver Luck, who left for a position with the NCAA. Lyons said he was aware of the issue when he interviewed for the job.

"While I am disappointed with today's NCAA report, I do take note that our department found the infractions, self-reported them and worked with the NCAA in full cooperation to address and correct the issues," Lyons said. "I am confident that the department has taken the necessary steps to correct its compliance and recruiting software program, re-educate the staff on updated NCAA changes on the rules surrounding text messages and phone calls and fulfilled our obligations to the NCAA concerning the situation long before I started as athletic director back on Feb. 2.

"Moving forward, I expect our department to continue its strong dedication to NCAA compliance."

In addition to the probation, West Virginia self-imposed penalties adopted by the panel that include a reduction of telephone contacts in the 14 sports for portions of the 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years, reduced off-campus recruiting in football, women's soccer, women's basketball and men's basketball, and official visit restrictions in women's soccer.

The football team also was stripped of one scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year.

Associate athletic director Keli Cunningham said there was no failure to monitor, lack of institutional control or failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance.

"There was no systemic effort by any of our coaches to violate the rules or gain a significant recruiting advantage, and that is reflected by the NCAA's decision," Cunningham said. "We take this very seriously and we accept the NCAA's findings."

The probation period runs through Feb. 17, 2017.

@drgnslayr Look at their schedule tho going forward. All against ranked teams and nothing easy. Our Texas game is special because of celebrating various championship teams (anybody know which ones?) and we will be wearing our throw back unis. I think we take them pretty easy especially with the crowd pumped. Their bigs don't play well together and Taylor really can't shoot. Turner is just not utilized and he doesn't really run that well. I'm not worried about that game at all.

@JayHawkFanToo And how many times shown on the local sports channels? Last night - 4 here in Austin - ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox affiliates all had it and each sports anchor almost relished in talking about it during the tease and then when back for the segment.

Sure he apologized quickly because it sunk in to him (or someone else explained to him) that this was the kind of thing that would hurt HIM going forward. No one knows his real intentions but my gosh you don't do that to someone lying on the floor. He never even attempted to reach for the ball.

@JayHawkFanToo Sterling Gibbs transferred from UT. He wasn't liked here and the writing was on the wall - even under Rick Barnes - that he needed to find someplace else.

Too bad Longhorns couldn't have helped us out by taking out OU last night.
