Bracketology: Strong profile pushes Kansas to top line

Dave Ommen Jan 21, 2014, 11:54 AM EST

Since losing to San Diego State, the Kansas Jayhawks have put together a five-game surge that includes victories over its biggest competitors in the Big 12 conference – Oklahoma, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Baylor. Two of those (Oklahoma, Iowa State) were on the road. Add in victories over Duke and New Mexico in non-conference play, and KU has notched eight Top 50 RPI victories. That’s two more than Syracuse, four more than Arizona, and three more than Michigan State – the other members of today’s No. 1 seed club. It’s also worth noting that Kansas has played the nation’s toughest schedule and currently sits atop the RPI. That’s a pretty strong profile (despite four losses – all to Top 25 RPI Teams), and the primary reason why the Jayhawks received the No. 4 slot on this week’s seed list (s-curve). When evaluating KU’s overall body of work, it’s pretty strong.

We still have two months to go and several other teams could reach the No. 1 seed line by March. Teams like Florida and Wichita State are building strong resumes, as is San Diego State. And it’s too early to count out Iowa, Michigan, or Wisconsin from the Big Ten title chase. The final contenders will be much more clear by mid-February.

On the flip side, January hasn’t been a good month for teams like Ohio State, Baylor, and North Carolina – or Georgetown for that matter; as the Hoyas are among the First Five OUT today. Through the first third of conference play, the Buckeyes, Bears, and Tar Heels own a combined 4-12 record (in league play). Some of that is due to scheduling and some of it has been inconsistent play. Either way, it would be a good time for those squads to reverse course. By the time we reach mid-February, a seriously sub-par conference record will not be endearing to the Selection Committee.

One of the best things about college basketball is that we never know what will happen. Enjoy the hoops.

From the Baylor Bears website - says alot!

STAT OF THE GAME

Kansas shot 58% from the field, while Baylor shot 39%.

I can't wait to see this team in person when they come to Austin Feb. 1st. They will get some well-deserved rest this week but cannot look past TCU with Iowa State coming to The Phog next Wed.

Baylor Intel Estimate • Jan 20, 2014 08:58 PM

@jaybate 1.0. You forgot their 3 point shooter, Brady Heslip. A Forte wannabe.

@ParisHawk All talking heads try to keep themselves relevant.

Nothing for us to do except go out and play the game we know and love. Tarik, Jamari and hell even Landen should all come off the bench to keep bigs out there.

Little off topic but not worth a new post.

Walking around during lunch in Austin today with my 9 Straight Big12 Conference Champs t-shirt, came upon a group of 6 from ISU decked out in their Cyclones gear. They play UT tomorrow. 5 of them sneered at me and only one told me "Good Game." :-)

I think the Longhorns have a good chance to beat ISU as long as Coach Barnes doesn't screw up taking the hot players out (which he always seems to do).

@KansasComet But here is what is posted on NBC Sports this morning. Only problem is they say the flip occurred in STILLWATER and not on our home court. Geez.

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: No. 9 Oklahoma State at No. 15 Kansas, 4:00 p.m. EST

Rob Dauster

This is going to be a doozy. Let’s start with the obvious: Oklahoma State and Kansas are the two best teams in the Big 12. And while the preseason luster of Marcus Smart vs. Andrew Wiggins (who, at the time, were considered the two favorites to win National Player of the Year) has faded a bit, there is still a bit of animosity there. Marcus Smart called out this year’s freshmen class in the preseason. He also infamously did a back-flip after the Pokes knocked off Kansas in Stillwater last year. Add in the intrigue of Bill Self being a graduate of Oklahoma State and, well, you have your pick of storylines heading into this one.

The basketball should be just as intriguing, although I think that Oklahoma State is going to have some trouble with Kansas for one reason: Joel Embiid. He may actually have the highest ceiling of any prospect in this draft class, and as a 7-footer with a low-post game, he is going to give an Oklahoma State team lacking in post front court depth problems. Travis Ford is really going to feel the loss of Michael Cobbins on Saturday.

Scott Drew, meet Tubby Smith. • Jan 17, 2014 12:33 PM

@nuleafjhawk I've noticed the same thing for every Big 12 game except at ISU. No one has the home crowd like us, even UT. The local sports writer here in Austin the other day posed that "if UT had George Strait play at halftime they just might get some fans to show up." Ever look at the stats for home attendance throughout a Big 12 season for each team? Very telling.

That is why The Field House IS the BEST Home Crowd Arena.

What is the deal with UK and Coach Cal? • Jan 16, 2014 12:19 PM

I recall reading that Billy Donovan had invested a LOT of time trying to get Joel and was not happy that he picked us.

@JayHawkFanToo Scott Drew looked just as sorry last night when Tech beat Baylor. Baylor failed to make a field goal in the final 4:24 of the first half. HaHaHaHaHa (giggle) (clap)

So did our L&A keep ISU from making their 3's or is it the old "Live by the 3, Die by the 3" adage? Or all of the above, combined with our defense?

When Coach told them they were starting conference play and it was reset to 0-0, there had to have been a big sigh of relief for the team to put the hard non-conference schedule behind them and start fresh. It's like a whole 'nother team.

Loved that every time the crowd would amp up we put a run in and before you knew it we would be up 7 or more.

Did you see the callout by ol' Doc on one of our in-bounds play ...."LOB, LOB, LOB"? Hoiberg bought into it and then the whole team did too. Turned out ol' Doc wasn't right. :-)

3-0 Baby in conference! Only team undefeated.

The best part............we don't have to listen to every pundit posit about how tough it is to play in Hilton Colisieum.

BTW, how did ISU move UP one notch in the new AP Poll when they LOST last weekend?

Duh. • Jan 14, 2014 12:00 PM

Being at EVERY home game during the 75-76 season. Suttle, Morningstar, Gibson, Von Moore, Greenlee to name a few, I am a '73 graduate of Leavenworth High School (where Simien came from) and my senior year dated then junior, Clint Johnson, who played on the 75-77 teams. They went 19-8 overall, 11-3 in conference and 1st in Big 8 with Coach Ted Owens.

In the NCAA, they lost 77-71 in the Midwest first round to Notre Dame.

@joeloveshawks FYI ISU is 2-1 right now.

Jan 11: Post-game Roundup: KU vs K State • Jan 13, 2014 08:10 PM

From the kittykat's website:

“We started the game okay, but it was more when they had their second group in there,” said Weber. “They picked us apart and made shots. They built their margin, got their confidence going, and we didn’t have any answers. I didn’t think we were very efficient, offensively. We kind of froze. They switched some things and stayed with ball screens, and we didn’t move the ball well enough. We got some open shots and went 1-of-11 from 3-point range. That is not going to cut it when they go 8-for-18 from beyond the arc, and that was probably the difference in the game.”

Would Hoiberg be dumb enough to play Kane and take a chance that he causes his ankle injury to become worse and impact the rest of the season or is he smart enough to not play him (even if it is against KU) to make sure nothing happens to affect him come March?

I believe that is what is at stake here and we will see what Hoiberg thinks matters. Kane did turn it bad and even a day of rest can't shake the fact that he walked out on crutches after the OU game.

Huge game for us. I don't buy into the "we can lose this game" and stay in the race. We've got to take them in the paint and get Niang and Ejam in foul trouble early. Defense needs to show up big time and double/triple guys like they did w/KState.

Odds of Embiid Staying? • Jan 10, 2014 06:25 PM

I don't know that I could put a number on it, and like you, my gut tells me he is leaning more to staying now than everyone pushing him out earlier this season. I would like to see him get the most of his experience at KU. His quote about "shouldn't he learn to drive first" was telling. Also, Jay Bilas was right when he said he needed to get his hands stronger. Joel, luckily, is in a position not many kids these days are in when it comes to the financial part. I think his father would welcome the additional year of classes/school/learning.

@VailHawk ;-) semi-colon, hyphen and end paren

I'm glad to have seen the intensity in Wayne, Perry and Naadir. The bench was engaged the whole game and Coach Self gave encouragement for the hussle when plays occurred. Our staying out in front kept the crowd from becoming a factor. The amount of fouls by us is something that will have to be worked on. Our points in the paint were 20-0 at the half and we totally outrebounded them 36-22. Conner gave us a lift with that first 3 but then he was left WIDE open and if he would have missed, he would have never come back in.

Tarik = 3 fouls in 5 mins of pt. :-(

Wilt was a Globetrotter • Jan 07, 2014 08:37 PM

I didn't remember this at all.

Perhaps the most famous player to ever don the red, white and blue Globetrotter uniform was National Basketball Association Hall of Famer Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain. Chamberlain dropped out of college after his junior year to play basketball professionally, but was barred from the NBA by league rules that prohibited players who had not completed their studies. The Globetrotters, who had no such prohibition, hired Chamberlain to play the 1958-1959 season for $50,000, the equivalent of about $400,000 today. His tenure with the Globetrotters took him and the team to Moscow for a goodwill tour and a meeting with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. After his season with the Globetrotters, Chamberlain went on to unbelievable success in the American Basketball Association and the NBA, becoming the first player to ever score 100 points in a single game. Chamberlain's number with the Globetrotters, 13, was officially retired March 9, 2000. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978.

Curly Neal was the absolute best Globetrotter (IMO).

NORMAN, Okla. -- It's a big week for the Oklahoma men's basketball team, as it will take on a pair of top-25 opponents at Lloyd Noble Center.

The 12-2 Sooners, who won 88-85 at Texas on Saturday to begin Big 12 Conference play, will host No. 16 Kansas on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT before hosting 13th-ranked and undefeated Iowa State on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.

OU is off to its best start in five years and second-best start since the 2004-05 season when it shared the Big 12 regular season title with Kansas.

The Sooners rank fourth nationally with their 87.3 points per game. The last time they averaged more points per contest for an entire season was during the 1993-94 campaign (87.4), which was the last under head coach Billy Tubbs.

Tickets remain for both games this week (limited number for Kansas contest) and can be purchased here or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (800) 456-4668.

Does KU win the Big 12 • Jan 07, 2014 03:10 AM

As long as we stay healthy and can steal an away game or two and hold home court. Tall order for sure. TX lost to OK. WVa beat Tech barely in OT tonight. Iowa St has Baylor tomorrow. Everyone will be gunning for us.

Did Bill Self go too far? • Jan 06, 2014 06:49 PM

@truehawk93 I watched the same game everyone else did and each poster here has their own perspective. I saw the ball thrown off of Ellis' abdomen/balls and not bounce off his legs. I don't let my frustrations about how the game ended to be taken out on other posters. It is a game played by kids and no amount of posting by any of us is going to help or change the way things are done or turn out.
I'm sorry you felt the need to be so critical of me.

Did Bill Self go too far? • Jan 06, 2014 11:54 AM

@jaybate 1.0 All good points. I would add:

Twelfth - As hard as Mason played, he didn't pass to anyone and missed so many of his drives into the lane; he had the t/o on his dribble at the end; then missed the front end of the free throws.

Thirteenth - The whole team carries this loss. Not one person is responsible.

Fourteeneth - Did they not know who to defend? At times our guys were out running around the perimeter and no one was back.

Fifteenth - Joel has got to learn how to get out of double teams. Every team from now on out will do that.

Sixteenth - Why didn't Landen play more?

As high of expectations we all had and still have for this 2013-2014 team, without someone to pose a threat on the perimeter we are not going to post many Ws. The non boxing out just kills me. Everyone else is playing with the same squirrely rule changes but that has really affected the flow of games and our transition game. Guys we need to remember these freshmen probably never played much defense in HS as they were the ones putting up the easy shots. It has taken them a little longer than we all hoped to adjust. And adjust they will or there will be a lot more Ls in our column.

@Crimsonorblue22 I would like to see Wayne guarding Smart as their bodies are similar. Watching the pussycats beat them today, I believe that our bigs, ie Joel, Tarik and Jamari, are going to give OSU lots of problems. They don't have anybody of size in the paint. OSU losing today is a plus for us.

@nuleafjhawk Same here with me on all those. And I'll add I have no cable/dish/satellite TV.

Weekend Preview: Sunday’s big, and not just on gridiron

Rob Dauster

Jan 3, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: No. 21 San Diego State at No. 16 Kansas, Sun. 4:30 p.m.

This is a huge game not only for San Diego State, but for the Mountain West as well. The Aztecs have been one of the more surprising teams in the country this season, but they don’t exactly have a ton of great wins. They beat Creighton and Marquette, who both could end up in the tournament, and knocked off Washington as well, but that’s it. But here’s the thing: even that mediocre non-conference schedule places SDSU near the top of the MWC in terms of performance outside the league. The Mountain West as a whole needs this win.

Can they get it? Well, it’s not going to be easy. Andrew Wiggins was the talk of Lawrence entering the season, but over the course of the last month, the Jayhawks have become a team that pounds the ball into the paint. Joel Embiid, Perry Ellis, Tarik Black. Those are the guys that have shined for Kansas in recent games, and I’m not sure the Aztecs have the front court to deal with them. It will be interesting to see what happens when Wiggins guards Winston Shepard as well. Shepard has been sensational the last three games.

Turner / Lyle • Jan 03, 2014 02:22 PM

I know a few have said BleacherReport isn't worth much. However, we are mentioned as still in the running for both these guys.

Remaining Undeclared Players

There are three big names still on the board that haven't yet committed to a school. Signing one of these players could propel a team from honorable mention to top 10.

Myles Turner (6'11" C)

No. 4 in 247Sports; No. 2 in ScoutHoops; No. 2 in ESPN

The pain of missing out on Jahlil Okafor will vanish in a hurry for whichever team is able to land Turner. The big man excels on both ends of the court and runs like a gazelle. Kansas is the current favorite to acquire his services, but don't sleep on Southern Methodist. Pairing Turner with Emmanuel Mudiay would give SMU one of the five or six best classes in the nation.

Here is a video of Turner:

![turner ↗](

Jaquan Lyle (6'5" PG/SG)

No. 22 in 247Sports; No. 22 in ScoutHoops; No. 38 in ESPN

Lyle is a combo guard who's a bit too big to be a pure point guard, but not enough of a three-point threat to be a pure shooting guard. However, he has great ball-handling skills and court awareness. If Kansas isn't already the favorite to add Lyle, it likely will be after his visit to Phog Allen Fieldhouse on January 11.

Rashad Vaughn (6'5" SG)

No. 13 in 247Sports; No. 13 in ScoutHoops; No. 17 in ESPN

Vaughn is a prolific scorer and could potentially become the cream of this year's shooting guard crop if he gets a little more consistent with his shot. UNLV is the "hometown" favorite, as he is attending Findlay Prep in Henderson, NV. He would certainly fill the scoring void in the Rebels' current class.

@bskeet Couldn't agree more with you on ISU's chip. Their fans have written about it on many blogs already blasting columnists who talk about Big 12 and have us as the #1 rank in conference. They are complaining they should be #1 because they are undefeated. And they still think they were robbed in both games last year. :-)

Home court advantage is going to mean a LOT for each of the top teams. We need to come away with a steal at one if not two of those venues = ISU and OSU. Baylor? Hopefully Naa and Perry will tell them about going to TCU! And how you don't take any opponent for granted.

One other observation. Coach Howard was the one doing the yelling/talking during one of the early time outs and both he and Coach Roberts were yelling out instructions to the guys in the second half. The most active of the supporting cast that I recall all year.

Post-game Roundup: Kansas vs Toledo • Dec 31, 2013 12:29 PM

Positives

Balance in scoring for the first time all season for all 5 starters. 4 in double figures.

We out rebounded them (for Toledo 11/15=26) (for us 15/25=40). I'd say that speaks to the "questions on defense" being raised. Had we not been aggressive on the boards the game would have turned in their favor.

Wiggins played 38 minutes. The most he has played and wasn't yanked in and out. Perry and Joel each 31 minutes. Led to some offense consistency.

Negatives

Mason played 23 minutes with only 2 points, 1 turn, and no free throws.

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

Mixed Bag

AFH crowd seemed to be sitting on their hands most of the game.

WTF = officiating.

Glad Joel wasn't hurt or an arm broken on the Toledo guy when they got tied up.
Joel ended up on the floor multiple times.

AWIII did not get to play.

Brannen Greene did and only had one def. rebound and one foul. ZERO points.

Wayne Selden. Lukewarm and cold. 29 minutes with only 8 points / 4 turns.

Couldn't trust to sub out starters and put in scrubs with 3 minutes to play.

Dec 30 Headlines: Game Day News • Dec 30, 2013 05:29 PM

Here's the ESPN talking heads opinion on KU vs Toledo tonight:

The schedule hasn't been too tough, but Toledo is undefeated. Any chance the Rockets leave Allen Fieldhouse with an unblemished record?

Katz:

Kansas has quite a week with the undefeated Rockets and then hosting one of the least-discussed Top 25 teams in the country in San Diego State. Toledo hasn't yet faced the defensive challenges they'll be forced to deal with Monday. The Rockets may end up being the best in the MAC (still debatable), but they won't be in the Top 25 since it's highly unlikely they'll get out of Phog Allen with a win.

O'Neil:

On a neutral court in March, I'd fear the Rockets. At Allen in December? Tall ticket. No disrespect to Toledo, which is a good, legit team and mid-major threat, but beating Kansas at home is too much to ask.

Brown:

The Rockets have just the right blend of veterans that will make a second-round opponent quiver in the NCAA tournament. While their schedule isn't impressive, you've got to respect the fact that they've already won four true road games. But ultimately, they don't defend well enough to pull off an upset at Kansas. There's always a chance in college basketball, but in this case it's a slim one.

I like this guy's thinking:

College Basketball Talk’s latest top 25

Rob Dauster NBC Sports

Dec 30, 2013, 9:00 AM EST

THE TOP 25

  1. Arizona (13-0, LW: No. 1): The Wildcats picked up another blowout, non-conference win last week. They’ll kick off Pac-12 play with a visit from the Washington schools next weekend. The biggest concern for Arizona right now? Finding some depth. With Gabe York struggling, this team basically goes six-deep.

  2. Syracuse (12-0, LW: No. 2): The Orange made quite a statement on Saturday afternoon, putting a whipping on Villanova despite digging themselves a 25-7 hole. Villanova is a good basketball team, and Syracuse made them look like they didn’t belong in the same gym for the last 30 minutes.

  3. Wisconsin (13-0, LW: No. 3): The Badgers continued rolling along, smacking around Prairie View A&M to end their non-conference season. Wisconsin kicks off league play next week with a trip to Northwestern.

  4. Ohio State (13-0, LW: No. 4): Over the course of his last eight games, LaQuinton Ross is averaging 17.1 points and shooting 48.5% from three. Let’s see how that works out in league play.

  5. Michigan State (11-1, LW: No. 5): The Spartans won by 53 points on Saturday thanks to a career-high 27 points from Keith Appling. Michigan State look like it’s getting healthy.

  6. Duke (10-2, LW: No. 7): Rasheed Sulaimon followed up last Thursday’s breakout performance against UCLA with 13 points, three assists and two steals in 22 minutes against Eastern Michigan.

  7. Florida (10-2, LW: No. eight): The Gators, now at full strength, look more impressive every time out.

  8. Oklahoma State (11-1, LW: No. 9): Wins over Colorado and Memphis stand out, but the Cowboys are going to be tested in Big 12 play. There may not be a tougher conference, top-to-bottom, than the Big 12.

9. Kansas (8-3, LW: No. 13): I know Villanova beat Kansas, so please don’t remind me. But I also think that Kansas is better than Villanova, and the Jayhawks are only getting better as they learn that their best option this season will be to pound the ball into Joel Embiid and Perry Ellis.

Ten. Villanova (11-1, LW: No. 10): I still like the Wildcats, loss at Syracuse or not.

Definitely think gains in offense. Limiting fouling should be another area where the team has realized it needs to improve.

AWIII is my Hawk to Rock!
