@Kcmatt7 Seth Littrell has already said he has zero interest in the Kansas job. He may be a good up and comer, but he has zero desire to be here, to me to move on.
So you want basketball to operate at about 50%-60% of its earning potential like football does?
@JayHawkFanToo You mention the talent FSU had last year. Even playing with a back up QB, how many people thought FSU was going to be in a position where those 2 cupcakes were must win just to get to bowl eligibility?
My point was never about the FSU's talent level compared to Directional St., it was about FSU having a talent level that far exceeded what their record was.
Want another example of a team doing something that made everyone scratch their head. This team had seasons where their W-L were 10-4, 12-1, 9-4, 0-12, 6-7, 13-0. Nobody saw UCF's 0-12 season coming because their history didn't indicate a season like that was looming, yet it happened
The odds may say KU won't get to 5-6 wins, I don't think it'll happen, but crazier things than that have happened in the recent past of college football.
@JayHawkFanToo Missing the point about FSU. How many people going into last season expected them to be sitting at 3-6 last year?
@Woodrow So you known the future? You know with 100% certainty that KU won't win 5-6 games?
I'll agree the likelihood of KU winning 5-6 games is very slim, but I also didn't think Florida St. would be in a position last year where they needed to win their final 3 games last year just to make a bowl game, but that happened.
@JayHawkFanToo That was the basic premise of my original comment was that football was nowhere near its ceiling for generating revenue. I didn't realize just how big the football revenue was worth under the new media deal. Under the old one, football was about $3-4 million per year more than basketball if I'm remembering correctly.
The B12 isn't terrible, there's just not a title contender outside of OU. TCU, WVU, and OSU all look to be good teams that will be fighting for a second game against OU this year
KU is capable of beating everyone else in the league under the right circumstances. KSU can't score so that game should be close, ISU is still a question mark, but don't seem like they're as good as last year. Baylor and Texas Tech are good offenses, but won't stop anyone. Texas is an enigma, they should be the 2nd best team in the league, but we're seeing what happens when you don't have a top quality QB with them.
@Woodrow Beaty isn't getting fired no matter what. If he gets this team to a bowl game, he'll be back next year. 5 wins, it's possible, but still probably gone. I don't think this team gets to 5 or 6 wins this year so I do think Beaty will be fired after this season concludes, but it's definitely not a no matter what scenario.
@Kcmatt7 KU opened as 3 point favorites. Rutgers is really bad this year.
@JayHawkFanToo KU football doesn't currently generate much higher profits than basketball. They're actually pretty equal at this point in time and that's the problem. KU basketball is generating at it very near maximum profitability while KU football is nowhere near its ceiling of profitability. A good KU football program can generate probably double what the basketball program does as far as profits go.
@Lulufulu How does Beaty winning today lessen how hot his seat is? Ending the road losing streak is great and all, but Beaty still has a lot of work to do this season to avoid a pink slip after Thanksgiving or sooner.
If Long does fire Beaty at any point during the season, he's bringing in someone from outside the program until the season is done after the Texas game and if KU does play another game after that one (either B12 game or a bowl game), then Beaty would legitimately deserve year 5 based on his accomplishments this year.
Jeff Long has been on the job a little over a month, he needs a little bit more time to fully develop his strategy for rebuilding the football team. If Long fired Beaty without an idea of who he thinks would come here, it would be a waste of a firing. Long needs to develop his plan which includes a realistic candidate list along with actually giving Beaty a fair shot to save his job this year.
The OLine did look better today. Pooka is a stud. Rutgers is really bad too. KU will be favored next week.
The road streak is over!
@Kcmatt7 The defense will get a reality check when conference play starts. Probably not next week based on how bad Rutgers is.
@Kcmatt7 Bowl game, 3-9 still gets him fired. All your scenario does is give Beaty the entire season instead of a midseason firing
Rutgers only has 83 yards of offense about halfway through the third quarter. I know OSU is really good, but that's still really bad by Rutgers.
Rutgers is really bad too. That game suddenly looks very winnable for KU and that KU will probably be favored in that one.
Does CMU fire their coach? It's happened the last two times KU has beaten an FBS team, lol!
Those stands are emptier than KU's stadium now.
WTH are they reviewing?
And the pass D makes up for with a great pick 6
Disagree with this punt, should've gone for it.
@kjayhawks KU probably wins with Pooka last week.
Pooka is going to be a stud.
Joe Dineen should be an All-American this year. He could also end up being the B12 DPOY.
Rutgers hasn't done anything against OSU today. That game looks winnable for KU right now too.
That was a good play. OLine looked good and Pooka made a couple of people miss.
@stoptheflop I'm fine with what he's doing. Most are pretty short punts that would be hard to field so him letting them bounce is the right call.
CMU would down at least 30 points against a good team today.
CMU is trying to get blown out today.
Yes, KU recovered at the CMU 24 and will settle for a FG and Rui pushed it wide left so it's still 7-0. It's really windy, but that's one Rui should've made.
@jayballer73 CMU receiver fumbled the ball away on the first play of the second half.
Should be a fumble
@kjayhawks This isn't good defense, it's bad offense on both sides.
@kjayhawks It'll depend on turnovers. Bender has done a good job of not turning the ball over so far and if he protects the ball like that the rest of the year, that'll help KU out more.
@BShark Because this game is at CMU, the broadcast of this game is based on the MAC TV deal, not the B12 deal.
Blown coverage on that TD
Gain 7-8 yards and Rui should be able to put KU up 3-0. That's the one aspect of this team I actually feel confident in. Rui is a very reliable kicker with good range.
@Kcmatt7 Starling committed to Nebraska out of high school
Should've gone for it there, not much to lose at this point.
OLine still sucks bad, CMU will eventually win this one. Nicholls is better than CMU though, so if KU can protect the ball, they might have a chance to steal this game.
Girod doesn't have the authority to fire Beaty and Long who does have the authority officially took the job on August 1. Firing Beaty that close to the season means an interim coach for the season. In KU's case, that means most likely Clint Bowen.
Beaty will be fired at some point and won't coach KU in 2019.
I think this will be a great scoring team, but I don't think this will a great shooting team like we've seen the past couple of years. I don't see anyone being 40%+ shooter from deep that you have to guard.
I foresee a lot of teams packing the paint and forcing KU to try and beat them from deep. I think we'll see some games this year where KU goes 7-8 minutes without a FG because this isn't a great shooting team.
Self won't go 10 deep by the time the final rotation is set. Most likely he'll go 8 deep, possibly 9 at the most. I think it would McCormack and Garrett that see the minutes reduction once the rotation is trimmed down for conference play if it's an 8 man rotation and just McCormack if it's a 9 man rotation.
Unless the OLine makes a drastic improvement from last week, the streak is going to 47. Maybe I need to re-enroll at KU since the 2009 football season was my senior year there.
You can also read it if you have an ESPN+ subscription which is nice that you don't need an Insider subscription now.
I will say that I was surprised to see TCU at #6 on their list.
Disappointed I'll only be able to make it to the Baylor game on Waco this year. I'm hoping I can score tickets to the Villanova and drive/fly up for my birthday that weekend, but I'll have to get lucky on when single game tickets go on sale to the public because I'm not paying $450 on StubHub for that game.
@BShark I didn't have an issue with using Kendrick in this game. Using him for 1 or 2 series a game isn't a big deal to me, mainly because he and Bender do have very different skill sets. It also helped that Kendrick did pass the ball on his first series so this isn't a case where Kendrick is coming in to run a single play. Him attempting a pass will force defenses to not 100% focus on Kendrick when he's in. I think at least once this year, Kendrick will be in and he'll throw one over the defense for a TD.
@kjayhawks I didn't have an issue with bringing Kendrick in on that play, my issue was with the play call itself. Lining Kendrick up in a 5 wide formation just flat out telegraphed that a QB draw was coming. Had it been a different play call like a zone read or a run pass option, I think it would've worked much better, or at least had a much higher chance of working.
South Dakota about to try a 50+ yard FG to tie KSU.
