@kjayhawks That's still 6 FT's possible. We need more attempts which would've happened had the refs called fouls that were fouls.
@kjayhawks We only took 4 FT's, more attempts would be nice.
KU should be up 7-8 with competent officiating.
@wissox Or ask Adrian to donate some of his.
Crap call on Graham
@chriz WVU student paper told them to. He's their bum of the game.
Stop to check the clock after the play, not when Mason is driving the lane.
Mitch with the nice block.
Why the eff do younstop the game there? Tgere were no injuries or fouls. If WVU's players can't get off the floor, TS for WVU.
Bobby Knight would love that pump fake Jackson used.
@justanotherfan You did not describe a difference in intensity, you just described a difference in talent. An average player in the Wichita city league guarding a future pro is not going to appear to be playing as hard as a pro because of the talent difference.
If you or I tried guarding Josh Jackson and then LeBron James tries guarding him, it's going to appear James is playing harder every possession because of the talent difference.
Game is off to a crappy start start. Mason gets whistled for a phantom call to start the game. 3 fouls in the first minutes total
@drgnslayr There is little difference in the intensity from college to NBA to the over 40 rec leagues. The difference is talent, ability, and fitness between those levels.
@jaybate-1.0 I agree that shortening the game was UT's best strategy because that's always the way for inferior teams to veat more talented teams. To Shaka, screwed up by not trying to get Lucas and Bragg into as much foul trouble as possible and turn the game into a FT contest and hope KU's FT shooting issues return. That was his biggest game plan mistake.
@ParisHawk Again, that's what ALL politicians do, left and right. Obama's team lied about stuff as well that was provable. Both Bush's, Clinton, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, go back as far as you want all the way to the beginning of recorded history and you will find that political leaders lie about stuff that could be proven. Trump is no different.
@ParisHawk Keep politics out of here. Jayhawks fall on each side of the political spectrum and every politician has lied about about promises to gain votes.
Trae Young would probably be treated similarly to how Blake Griffin was treated at OU and he may not want that much attention or pressure. At OU, he'd be viewed as a savior of the program type guy whereas at KU, he'd just be the next guy in the list of guards that have rolled through Lawrence under Self. Young would likely be scrutinized more on the court than at OU, but he also wouldn't be the only one in the spotlight because he wouldn't necessarily be the best player on the floor for his team at all times like he would at OU.
Mitch did his job of providing a few minutes in a normal 3 out 2 in line up to give the guards some rest. That's going to be his primary role this season. He's not going to get a lot of minutes, but he's a competent player for the role he has. As small as he is, he needs to develop a little bit more of a perimeter game before he can start turning up the minutes because his body won't playing extended minutes in the paint.
The Detroit Pistons knock off the Washington Wizards courtesy of a Marcus Morris tip in over his brother Markieff Morris as time expired.
I think what KU did today is what Self would like to do every game. Build an early, and be able to allow the team to play a slower tempo and blow teams out. I know we'd all like to see KU win every game by 20+ and have Tyler Self and the rest of the EoB guys a few minutes a game, but that's not going to happen with this team.
Self is going to have to rest guys by having KU go on short spurts like 8-0, 10-2 or something similar instead of the 20-5 type runs we're accustomed to. It takes less energy for these short spurts and this team is good enough offensively to keep opponents at arms length without losing. It's basically the same philosophy Self used in 2012 when KY and Teahan were the bench and KU won a bunch of close games.
So basically, I think Self is buying rest by getting KU up into a 12-15 lead range, then take some possessions off and let teams get back to within 4-5 points, rinse, and repeat.
If KU wins on Tuesday, KU goes 4 up on WVU and the Big 12 race essentially becomes a two horse race between KU and Baylor.
Here's my thoughts on why KU doesn't put teams away this year. It takes a lot of energy to do go on those huge runs and with KU's lack of depth, these short spurts followed by plays where KU looks slow is Self's way of resting players without actually resting players because he can't sit guys for extended periods.
@JayHawkFanToo Not this year. Locations are announced the week before this year. Gameday will be at Rupp for the Kansas-Kentucky game next Saturday, but nothing is known of locations beyond that for this year.
@BShark This is a pick whoever you want to fill the scoring column up game so it could be a Lucas game.
KU's currently on pace to win 140-20.
Helluva start!
@JayHawkFanToo Gonzaga and UCLA both end up out west. Arizona is the one that'll moved east. Gonzaga won't go undefeated which they need to do to earn a 1 seed this year over UCLA amd they aren't going undefeated because they will get upset at some point this year.
@wissox MSU is an EST program.
@BeddieKU23 The turning point for OU this year was getting Woodard back from injury.
@jayballer54 Woodard is the only reason OU won tonight. This is what happens when you are totally dependent on one player to do everything for your team. He will make turnovers, he will put some bad shots, and he will not be as efficient as people want because he is doing everything.
OU had a chance to steal one in Morgantown in regulation, but Jordan Woodard missed a FT with 3 seconds left to win it for OU. Woodard is a career 85% or so FT shooter so definitely a surprise. Still hoping OU can pull it off and hand WVU a devastating home loss they can't afford if they want to win the Big 12 this year.
@Lulufulu Aaron Rodgers has a ring. Green Bay beat Pittsburgh in 2010/11 and Rodgers was MVP of that Super Bowl.
@JayHawkFanToo The rotation size isn't different than usual, the lack of depth is. If a guard goes down, Tyler Self is next guard off the bench. That's how little depth KU has in back court. Anytime Mason or Graham take a bump or fall, Tyler Self is that close to being a factor this year.
Let them shoot the 3
Make this and ice it.
KU got lucky on that possession.
That missed FT was killer, needed to make it a 3 possession game.
Bragg, you're 6-10, you should dominate any 6-5 guy out there.
Quit crying ISU fans! Biggest bunch of whiners in the Big 12, even worse than KSU fans.
I think I'd rather have Higgins ref this game than these clowns.
Lucas is so much better on offense than last year. I would've loved to have seen what this Lucas could've done in the high low with Perry Ellis last year.
@BShark Considering the amount of time he spent at the same school that churned out Emanuel Mudiay and Terrance Ferguson, I'm preparing for him to be ruled academically ineligible just they were along woth others who have spent an extended amount of time at Prime Prep/API.
@BShark I will take matador defense out of Preston next year considering one of the very possible alternatives is him playing in China or Europe next year.
@BeddieKU23 Those schools exist in their current form because of the current AAU system. They don't compete in their state organizations (public or private) and they primarily play tournaments agaisnt other basketball factories. Those basketball factory schools are nothing but a different form of AAU ball.
AAU has ruined American basketball.
@JayHawkFanToo The NCAA can say whatever BS they want to. They weight the RPI far heavier than anything else. It's the only reason why 8 and 9 loss KU teams entering the tournament got 2 seeds when we lost to Stanford and a 7th seeded WSU team that was rated top 15-20 in the polls and computer rankings most of that year. Those were KU teams that should've been 3-4 seeds at best.
If you want to bet, don't try and stack the odds in your favor that much and expect anyone to bite.
@jaybate-1.0 OU boosters don't give 2 sh*ts about basketball. They only care about football.
@JayHawkFanToo The Big 12 does not get 7 teams in. Not even close. The selection committee still values RPI above all else (there is no disputing this one). The Big 12 ends up with 4-5 at large caliber teams. Baylor (1), Kansas (5), West Virginia (23), TCU (25), ISU (47), OSU (52), and KSU (53) are the only teams in at large range. OSU isn't getting in and unless ISU picks up their play, they won't get in either. KSU is also down low enough that an at large isn't guaranteed for them either.
The Big 12 has 3 good teams, 4-5 average teams, and 2-3 bad teams. The Big 12 is down from years past.
I don't care what Sagarin says, the ACC is better top to bottom. The Big 12 might be the second best league (Big 12 and Big East are neck and neck to me), but that isn't saying much because the B10 is way down this year and the PAC 12 and SEC have no depth beyond the top 3-4 teams in each league.
This is going to be a year with a lot of mid majors making the tournament.
@HawkChamp The short bench is causing issues because Mason is playing 35 mpg and Graham is playing 34 mpg. Those numbers are only going to increase which means those 2 can't rest and conserve energy to play defense.
We've already seen Graham's shooting suffer this year and his tired legs won't go away this year. Mason's shooting won't continue either playing 35+ mpg either.
KU's offense will not keep up with this pace unless Self starts forcing Lightfoot and Coleby into the line up more in a traditional 3 out 2 in line up to give Mason and Graham more rest to keep their legs fresher.
KU is dealing with a short bench, a post position that has no depth and production beyond Lucas, and has struggled to beat the teams sitting 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th in the league.
Basically KU has struggled to put away the bottom half of the league and now gets the top half of the league along with Kentucky thrown in there.
Combine the way KU is playing right now, the schedule KU has coming up over the next 7 games (3-4 is a legitimate possibility with the way KU is playing right now), the Big 12 being down (the Big 12 will be a 4-5 bid league this year), and KU's nonconference schedule rating tumbling as Indiana and Duke keep cratering and you get the possibility of KU not getting to go though Tulsa/KC looks like a real possibility right now.
