Carlton Bragg was 6-8, 220 last season. This year, he's 6-10, 240. He's gone from a Morris twin body type to LL's body type. He's having to learn how to play as a post player instead of a stretch 4. He's also having to do this in a primarily 4-1 line up. In practice, I'm guessing it's almost exclusively 4-1. Bragg to Lucas high-low with Bragg in the high post would work great, but I don't think Self can do much of that in practice because KU doesn't have the bodies in practice to do so. KU literally has 4 healthy big on the roster and by healthy I mean healthy enough to practice and play in games when needed because Coleby is nowhere near 100% from his ACL injury which is why he isn't playing more when he could be a solid role guy for this team if healthy.

It does appear that Bragg's new size has diminished his athleticism which has kept him from doing some of the good things he did last year on offense. Bragg is learning how to play in his new frame and is struggling to make the adjustment to a physical presence because he was always much more of a finesse guy before.

Several thoughts • Jan 15, 2017 10:12 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 very true, our non conference SOS will improve after we go to Lexington, UK has the same trouble with the SEC looking like a bigger joke than the B12. I would still bet we end up in KC if we win the big 12.

Several thoughts • Jan 15, 2017 02:27 PM

@KUSTEVE That's the 2011-12 season you just described. KU didn't win pretty and heavily relied on bad ball to keep guys out of foul trouble.

@Crimsonorblue22 I would've assumed Nova at 2 this week, but that didn't happen though.

Who's replacing Baylor on Monday, KU or Villanova?

Thankfully Jackson didn't hurt his ankle on that one.

Not smart taking a shot that early. Gotta run clock at this point in this situation.

@approxinfinity Svi picked his 4th with about 12 minutes left, that's why he hasn't played much this half.

No defense for that hook shot.

@DoubleDD Defense wins championships, always has and always will. A great defense and average offense will always have a much better chance at a championship than an elite offense and average defense.

@HawkChamp Self only seriously recruited Marcus Smart. They never seriously pursued Forte like OSU did. It was known that Smart and Forte were a package deal and Ford recruited them as a pair and Self focused primarily on Smart.

Hawks vs Pokes Game Thread • Jan 14, 2017 08:16 PM

How different would KU be today had they seriously recruited Forte instead of a token offer and KU had landed Smart and Forte.

@KUSTEVE When you look at a circular version of the political spectrum, Fascist Germany is not very far from extreme left political ideology.!Political.Circle.jpg ↗

I'm amazed OSU is 0-4. They're a much better team than that, but they've also had arguably the hardest opening to Big 12 play of anybody too though. Only their UT loss is really a bad loss, the rest are more expected if a middle tier team playing upper tier teams.

Kansas Football offseason news • Jan 12, 2017 10:59 PM

KU has hired TCU's Doug Meacham as offensive coordinator and receivers coach. This is a big get for Beaty because Meacham had a huge hand in the installation of the Air Raid at TCU with Boykins. Meacham was also one of the names that was popping up on people's wishlist when Beaty got the job. Meacham has plenty of experience with the Air Raid at TCU and Houston as an OC and at OSU as passing game coordinator.

This is a homerun hire for KU at OC.

Jackson shooting 28% from 3 this year.

Just slightly worse than his FT%

But I'll still take him and his T's.

Jackson has a swagger and attitude that KU hasn't had since the Morris/T-Rob years.

Boom them Sooners chat • Jan 11, 2017 03:06 AM

@Blown KU moving into transition D has nothing to do with giving up 50% offensive rebounding rate to KU. KU is already on defense for these attempts and just doing a very poor job of not giving OU second chances.

Boom them Sooners chat • Jan 11, 2017 03:03 AM

@Blown This is one of those nights where a small line up is punishing KU on the glass. OU is getting 50% of the offensive rebounding opportunities, that is not a good thing.

Worst half of the season.

Baylor's Short Stay At The Top • Jan 10, 2017 05:00 PM

@drgnslayr Weber has always had the reputation of being a good game day coach. His first years at Iliinois and KSU back that up pretty solidly. The guy just can't recruit very well which is why his programs are always up and down after his first couple of seasons.

That was reputation even at Illinois before KSU hired him.

Some misc, possible concerns: • Jan 10, 2017 12:59 AM

@kjayhawks Coming in for foul trouble is not the same thing as being a rotation player. With UA down, Self has shown that he's going to go with a 7 man rotation with Vick and Bragg as the primary bench guys. If Self didn't turn to Lightfoot in the TCU or KSU games in a meaningful way, he's not going to this year. The only way Lightfoot becomes a rotation player at this point is another injury to someone. Other than that, he'll get spot minutes when both Lucas and Bragg are in foul trouble.

Baylor's Short Stay At The Top • Jan 09, 2017 11:40 PM

@benshawks08 The road to the Big 12 title does go through Lawrence because you have to win road games most teams can't and and KU is by far the most difficult venue to get a road win in the Big 12.

The Missouri rivalry is just different from every other rivalry KU has had or will ever have. The fact that people here still pay attention to their program and are aware of their struggles is a big sign of still caring about and missing the rivalry. You don't pay attention to programs you don't care about.

I am firmly in the camp of those who would love to the rivalry restart. I underatand and accept it won't happen any time in the near future, but that doesn't mean that I don't miss the rivalry. There's just no other program that generates the emotion from KU fans the way Missouri does. That T-Rob block doesn't generate the same emotion if it had happened against Baylor or OSU or even KSU. Only Missouri could've generated that level of emotion.

@ralster When the crowd cheers for Tyler to shoot or for Jordan Jueneman to play, ir any other end of bench guy, those are not Bronx cheers. That is genuine emotion because KU fans know those guys bust their butts in practice everyday for little recognition publicly.

When those guys come in games, they're rarely going against the other teams starters, it's usually against their end of bench guys too.

Teams don't win championships without tgese end of bench guys running scout team in practice daily making guys like Mason and Jackson better everyday. An opportunity to play a couple of minutes when KU is up 25 against someone at the end of the game is an opportunity for the crowd to show their appreciation for the hard work those guys put in.

Fran Makes Monumental Flub Up.... • Jan 09, 2017 12:34 PM

@HawkChamp The issue with Knight pointing it was that he was doing it every other possession without adding much else towards the end of his Big 12 run.

Fran Makes Monumental Flub Up.... • Jan 09, 2017 04:42 AM

@HawkChamp Knight was a good broadcaster early on, but he got progressively worse each season. Nonstop talk about playera not using a shot fake. His final year of doing Big 12 games, a couple of friends and I did a drinking game for every time Knight talked about a shot fake. We had to stop at halftime so nobdy wpuld have to go to the hospital.

@Crimsonorblue22 I want to play them again, but I understand Self's position on it.

Baylor's Kim Mulkey had the best response in regards to Baylor and A&M continuing to play in women's basketball beacuse they won consecutive titles right before A&M left (A&M in 2011 and Baylor in 2012). She compared it to a divorced couple where one party cheated on the other. The cheater then asks the faithful one for help and faithful one basically tells the cheater F-you.

So while I would love to see KU run Missouri out of the gym in basketball, all it does is help Missouri.

I do think we could see a renewal of the rivalry in the future, but it won't be until after the Big 12 is dead when the current TV deal is up and KU is in the B10.

@BeddieKU23 Graham was a late bloomer. He committed to App St., App St. had a coaching change, Graham wanted out of his LOI which App St. wouldn't agree to. Graham then decided to go to prep school for a year instead of App St. That summer is when he started catching the eyes of bigger programs and chose KU over NC State.

@JayHawkFanToo Graham still has over half a season left.

Welcome Back Devonte • Jan 08, 2017 08:28 PM

Graham will get a shot at the NBA. He'll be a late 1st or 2nd round pick, but he'll get a shot.

Recruit visiting • Jan 08, 2017 07:56 PM

@JayHawkFanToo It's still 12 official visits for basketball. A basketball recruit cannot take an official visit to any school until January 1 of their junior year of HS so any prospect who is not already a senior in HS that visits for Late Night is on an unofficial visit.

Grayson, you decide • Jan 08, 2017 07:44 PM

Allen has no benefit of the doubt at this point. The ACC is full of crap for saying they can't tell if it was on purpose or not. I would thoroughly enjoy if some other ACC sent out an end of bench guy specifically to trip Allen and take him out for awhile

Recruit visiting • Jan 08, 2017 07:37 PM

@JayHawkFanToo My source was the NCAA Rulebook itself. The version I saw was from 2011-12 so numbers may have changed, but there's a hard cap on the number of prospects schools can bring in for official visits that varies from sport to sport. For football, it was 50, basketball was 12, and baseball was 25. Each prospect can only take 5 official visits and cannot take an official to the same school mutliple times.

I did not see a cap on the number of prospects schools can host for unofficial visits or the number of times a prospect can visit the same school on unofficial visits. Trae Young could in theory come to KU every home game for an unofficial visit if he wanted and could afford to.

Recruit visiting • Jan 08, 2017 02:42 PM

@mayjay Unless rules have changed, schools are only allowed to host 12 official visits per year. At a place like KU, I don't think they can afford to waste an official visit on a kid they have no interest in, especially when KU could have up to 7 openings this season.

@BShark Steelers are not as good as they early on and Chiefs are better than they were early on. Chiefs will beat Pittsburgh and lose to the Pats in NE.

@Bwag Xavier was the second leading scorer behind Sherron, best 3 point shooter and best perimeter defender. Xavier was a huge part of that team.

@BShark Alex Smith may not be elite, but he doesn't beat himself. The Chiefs are a very tough team to beat because they don't make many mistakes.

The Texans on the other hand only made the playoffs because the AFC South was garbage. Brock Osweiler was a huge waste of money.

@Bwag I don't disagree with Jackson being better, just think Xavier had the better supporting cast.

Looks like Baylor is gonna hold on against OSU.

@bskeet Xavier had a great and experienced supporting cast too.

Baylor with the ball up 2 with 37 seconds left.

Baylor up 4 with 1:28 left.

Did Fran really just call Mason a Wooden Award candidate? I agree, just shocked Fran said it.

Shouldn't fouling someone going up to catch a lob be considered in the act of shooting?

Did Fran really just call OSU the 7th or 8th best in the Big 12? I don't think they're in the top tier, but they're not the bottom of mid teams either.

@BShark KU has 2011-12 depth at this point. Better overall talent, but very short bench just like then.
