It's always a trip seeing my cutout in the front row at AFH. Only had seats like that a couple of times as a student.
Beautiful bounce pass to Mitch
WTF was that lazy ass pass Tristan?
@wissox Realistically from a financial stand point, the B10 would've been crucified for not helping OSU out. Without the B10 title game, there was a decent chance of OSU getting left out of the College Football Playoff and costing the B10 millions of dollars in revenue.

B12/SEC Challenge against Tenn. is on Jan. 30.
@BeddieKU23 Jay Wright isn't leaving Villanova for anything other than the 76ers.
@jayballer67 The women are still bad and doing what they always do by beating up on bottom feeders and getting blasted by other major conference teams. Ole Miss blasted them by 17 last week.
@BeddieKU23 By letter of the law, technically Adidas is a booster, but the rule has never been interpreted that way prior to the FBI investigation. Eventually, the NCAA Bylaws are going to get updated as a result of these cases to add a section specific to corporate sponsorship of programs.
The NCAA is using this argument as the basis of the accusations against Louisville, NC State, and KU so if the IARP rules against the NCAA in the NC State case which should be the first one to have a decision announced, then that's a good sign for KU and Louisville on that accusation specifically.

By how many points will we to lose to Creighton?
We're not losing that one. Today was mostly KU looking ahead to that one with some fatigue from 3 games in 5 days mixed in.

We lost to Liberty once and Richmond in AFH. This happens on occasion
When did KU lose to Liberty? Worst home loss I remember is Oral Roberts.
Two things today. One is KU is tired. 3rd game in 5 days and their shooting is reflecting a lot of tired legs in their shooting. The other issue is KU probably looking ahead to Tuesday night against Creighton.
@AsadZ said in Coastal Carolina game:
I read that a number of players have put their names in the transfer portal? Why so many kids are leaving now? Is this a warning sign for Miles?
I don't see much to worry about. The transfers are upperclassmen who have been passed over on the depth chart by younger guys. With the extra year of eligibility, these guys still want to play college football so leaving KU is how that'll happen for them.
Sparty held on for a 7 point win. Rocket Watts is a really good player.
Michigan State and Detroit Mercy tied at 62 with 7 minutes left.
@jayballer67 When you would have like Eliot to teach these players his system? During spring practice? Oh wait, we didn't have a spring practice this year. During fall camp? Oh wait, that got stopped and started multiple times because of Covid, legislation, and the NCAA.
Opt outs, Covid, and injuries this season resulted in KU starting 5 guys on defense in their first or second year of college football including a couple of guys playing a different position last night.
These guys are inexperienced and limited in what they can do in practice because of Covid restrictions and there's only so much film study and chalk boards can help with in learning schemes. Eventually players have to get on the field and actually practice to get the hang of what's going on with these schemes and responsibilities.
When the DC is forced to play a lot of players before they're ready to play or playing them out of position, and have limited practices because of Covid issues.
When a position group is isolated because of exposure, that also means you can't run a full 11 on 11 drills at practice which also hurts development. I'm not a big DJ Eliot fan, but there's so much stuff working against him this year that's beyond his control.
There's also a big difference between firing a position coach and firing a coordinator midseason because a position coach doesn't affect the scheme a team runs. Firing Eliot also means having to teach a new defensive scheme mid season which would just make the defense even worse.
Looks like Baylor knocked off KSU on a last second FG to win by a point.
Miles Kendrick has looked really good tonight. This version of him tonight is the best any KU QB has looked all season.
@jayballer67 How would you like Elliot to address all of the injury issues the defense has had this season? The line up KU is putting out there on both sides is probably one of the youngest line ups in the nation.
The biggest issues with the defense are inexperience and lack of size because of their youth. It takes time and defense has some nice pieces and this should in the next couple of season's.
Miles Kendrick in at QB and moved KU down the field with ease and scored on 4 straight passes.
KU might have something with Pesek-Hickson at RB.
Defense left the TE by himself again for another TD. 31-6 now.
KU also started 6 true freshman on offense including 3 on the OLine including the center who keeps launching snaps. The other two are the LT and RG along with Daniels, Pesek-Hickson, and Grimm.
KU has looked like KU so far outside of two plays. A fake reverse where Daniels somehow hit Lassiter in stride for a 48 yard TD and then catching TCU off guard with an onside kick. Outside of TD pass, KU has -42 yards of offense thanks to a center that's launched multiple snaps over Daniels head and several more where Daniels and MacVittie have had jump to retrieve the snap.
The defense has been torched on the ground and then 2 blown coverages have given TCU TE's two scores where nobody was within 20 yards. And special teams has also given up another punt return for a TD.
24-6 TCU after the first quarter.
@Kcmatt7 And now I'm supposed to think that copying that system is going to be what puts KU over the top?!?! GTFO with that shit take. KU's only shot this year is to to working to develop Dave so there's an post presence.
@Kcmatt7 said in EMPEROR OF BASKETBALL:
@Texas-Hawk-10 pick any 5 in the NBA, put them on the Rockets, and the Lakers are still the NBA champs
No shit, how many times have I told you specifically that the Rockets system would never win a championship? And guess what, it got Mike D'Antoni fired because his system cannot beat elite teams. He's proved it in Phoenix with Nash and Stoudemire by failing to beat Kobe, he proved in New York where the Knicks were an absolute shitshow and he proved it in Houston with Harden and Paul/Westbrook that even with elite players, his system doesn't win championships.
It also doesn't change that LA played through AD instead of LeBron against the Rockets because the Rockets didn't have anybody capable of slowing him down unlike LeBron.
@Kcmatt7 said in EMPEROR OF BASKETBALL:
Literally nobody stopped AD all year though 😂. Small or big. He’s a top 5 player in the world rn. It had nothing to do with strategy.
Actually that was their strategy because the Lakers played through AD instead of LeBron James that entire series except for game 1. But if you think AD is a better player than LeBron and that the Lakers played through AD instead LeBron all year, I can't do much for you on that one. That was their game plan because the Rockets literally had nobody to match up with Davis unlike LeBron and the Lakers exploited the hell out of that strategy to run the Rockets off the court in games 2-5.
@jayhawks2010 said in EMPEROR OF BASKETBALL:
Rockets only lost when the lakers switched to small ball and stopped playing davis at the 4. They got worked when they played Howard and McGee. Lakers were just better at small ball lol.... this team can absolutely win playing small. They have several 6”5-6”8 guards. No reason to think you need a big guy. Sure there will be a game that Dave or Mitch will help but the best team ku has is playing small
Rockets got their ass kicked by Anthony Davis because they didn't have anyone big enough to guard him. That's the damn point is that Rockets got their asses handed to them once they ran into a legit big man in Anthony Davis. None of the Lakers wins were competitive at all and even in the one game the Rockets won in that series, Davis still dominated the paint.
Don't come at me trying to claim the Lakers played small ball against the Rockets when Anthony Davis played more minutes than anyone for LA in that series because the Rockets couldn't stop him with anyone on their roster.
@Kcmatt7 said in EMPEROR OF BASKETBALL:
I was told we don’t want to go Rockets/Warriors small ball because it doesn’t win
I see someone likes twisting what other people say to fit their narrative instead of using statements in context.
I never mentioned the Warriors because they never played a 5 guard line up. They always had a post player whether it was Andrew Bogut, Javale McGee, Kevon Looney, or Boogie Cousins.
And guess what, the Rockets small ball experiment failed because they got ran off the court when they ran into a team with a legit front court.
A 5 guard line up can win games, but it doesn't win championships. KU will not win a national title with Jalen Wilson at the 5.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I’d venture to guess that being a top 25 team and packing the arena would have been worth the extra funds...
Not when OSU was under NCAA investigation and ended up with a self imposed postseason ban this year.
OSU was not an attractive long term option at the time and they weren't looking to spend a lot of money at the time to keep Underwood because of that investigation.
@Kcmatt7 said in Non-KU Games Thread:
Does Brad Underwood really have Illinois in the top 10?
How did OSU let him leave? How did KSU not go after him harder?
The answer is $$$.

There are NBA PGs at Pepperdine and Ohio. That's insane.
Why is that insane? Look at where some of the other top PG's in the NBA played college ball at. Weber St. (Damian Lillard), Murray St. (Ja Morant), Boise St. (Spencer Dinwiddie), Wichita St. (Fred Van Vleet).
@approxinfinity said in Gonzaga Game Thread:
@Texas-Hawk-10 well to play devils advocate, 2013 had a future POY PG on the bench and a perennial NBA all star at the 5. It's possible that roster management may have contributed to 10 losses there, just as it may have with the commitment to Grimes and hi lo with Udoka and Lawson in 2018 and just as it could this year. It's possible with question marks around the roster this year the losses could mount.
Mason was a true freshman and Embiid was playing injured a good chunk of that season. That team was also insanely young that season with I think only 1 player that wasn't in their first or second season at KU.
The 2018-19 team was title contender until Doke broke his wrist. KU was undefeated and top ranked prior to Doke's injury.
Injuries played the biggest role in 2018-19's season. Like I said earlier, only way this team loses 10 games is if Garrett or McCormack get injured.
@approxinfinity said in Gonzaga Game Thread:
@Texas-Hawk-10 2013-2014 and 2018-2019 were both talented rosters on paper. I think I agree it won't be a 10 loss team, simply because Marcus is as tough a leader as they come and we are returning more talent than 2013-2014, but it's a team that lost its PG and AA Big, that appears to be missing a reliable rim protector unless this showing by Dave is anomalous.
With the Big 12 being very competitive this year, I think 8 losses is likely.
2013-14 had Naadir Tharpe running point, enough said. 2018-19 had all kinds of injury issues and was just a very inexperienced team overall considering half of the current rotation was on that team. Garrett is a far better PG than Tharpe ever was and I would take this version of Garrett over freshman Dotson was.
@Kcmatt7 said in Gonzaga Game Thread:
@BShark I just think we are more like a 10 loss team this year. Will drop a couple of games the three doesn’t drop I’m thinking.
Still wouldn’t want to play us in March/April
Back away from the ledge, this isn't a 10 loss team. If this team loses 10, that means they got bit by the injury bug big time this year. This is a 5-6 loss team.
This group is nowhere close to the profile of Self's other two 10 loss teams here.

It’s the first game going against a team that will be in the top 5 all season. It’s impossible to judge our season’s success now. With that said I have no doubts that West Virginia and Baylor will beat us easily in both games.
Same shit people said after the 30 turnovers against Duke last year. KU will be fine. This is what happens when not the best team in the country plays the best team in the country.
@BeddieKU23 said in Gonzaga Game Thread:
Texas, West Virginia. The list goes on
Those are good front courts, but still nowhere near what Gonzaga has in both quality and depth.
@Kcmatt7 said in Gonzaga Game Thread:
@Texas-Hawk-10 I’m judging Dave off of 2 previous seasons. He was shit last season too which is why we went 4 guard
Dave was played out of position last year which is why he looked like shit until he played the 5 backing up Doke.
Please tell me what front court Dave will see the rest of the season that's as good as what Gonzaga has?
This is the third time I've asked this question in general now and nobody has yet answered it because there isn't better front court than Gonzaga this season.
@Kcmatt7 said in Gonzaga Game Thread:
@BShark I mean I realize that he is going to play some. But I just don’t know he’s capable of being better.
This was the best front court in the nation and you're judging Dave's season based on what he did against the absolute best front court he will face all season.
Name a better front court Dave will go against this season? Baylor is the only one in the same neighborhood, but Baylor's front court is in the back of that neighborhood where the lesser homes are.
The defense will get better the more these guys play together and get their chemistry working together.
We know Dave isn't Doke, but he's also not going to shoot 3-9 every game either. This is where losing Silvio is going to hurt the most because what's going to hurt Dave the most is not having another legit big to practice against everyday. Silvio was going to be that guy, but now it's an undersized Mitch or a too skinny Gethro guarding Dave in practice.
Not having Silvio also means that Mitch can't play the 4 next to Dave and help on defense which is Mitch's biggest strength on defense.
With the length KU has, I'd like to see Self develop a zone defense to take advantage of KU's perimeter length. Not something to run all the time, but it can be weaponized to great effect to disrupt the other team.
Gonzaga has a real shot at going undefeated this season. Baylor is going to be the biggest threat to Gonzaga going undefeated this season.

We will need Dave to improve and he will. I like a lot of other things regarding the team.
Maybe senior year he will be serviceable defensively. I'm not expecting it though which is why self signed 3 bigs
This is also by far the best front court in the nation and the biggest reason why Gonzaga is #1.

@Texas-Hawk-10 But if you pull it down to tell, why even wear it... adjust.
What adjustment is there to make? I can't yell louder because I'm already yelling during a game near the top of my volume level. I'm not buying a cheaper mask that does nothing. I pull my mask down for a couple of seconds while I'm calling a play out and pull it back up when I'm done.
Quite frankly, if I'm catching Covid at my school, it's not going to be from basketball, it's going to be from one of my overcrowded in person classes that I don't have enough room to properly social distance my students.
Bad pass Braun
@benshawks08 said in Gonzaga Game Thread:
@Texas-Hawk-10 in a mostly quiet gym pretty sure they can be heard. They may not FEEL like they are being heard.
With the artificial crowd noise being pumped in, it's a lot more difficult than you would think to hear, especially with the type of mask Self has on. I do coach basketball in empty gyms and still have to pull my mask down so my players can hear a play call.
I've even had to pull my mask down in practice so my players could instructions for a drill because my mask was muting my voice more than I thought and I'm one of the loudest teachers on my campus.
@benshawks08 said in Gonzaga Game Thread:
Just a note: mask don’t work if you pull them down every time you yell and spray your spit everywhere.
Players on the court also can't hear what a coach says with a mask up so coaches need to pull it down to call plays or get a refs attention.
With KU's length, mixing some zone would help a lot with keeping the ball out of the paint some.

@Texas-Hawk-10 But their good shooting was our gift to them, for the most part. Too many easy shots at the rim.
I still don't see them hitting at that rate in the second half because they were still making shots when KU's defense was solid too.
