Thursday nights starting 5... • Jan 26, 2021 01:42 PM

Since we're playing TCU and we already ran them by 29 at their place, I would put Harris into the line up, take Braun out and slide Garrett to the 2 spot.

McCormack had arguably his best game of the season against TCU so unless he's one of the guys Self said didn't respond well in practice yesterday, I'd keep him in the starting line up at least for Thursday.

I still think as long as Self is going to play through the post with roster instead of basing the on motion, pick and roll, screen and roll and other action to open up driving lanes, the offense is going to struggle with consistency.

Brandon Schneider should've been fired 3 years ago . It's the same thing every year with him. Build up a nice non-conference record against sub 200 ranked programs and then win 3-4 Big 12 games.

For everyone wanting to see more Harris, I would play him over Braun at this point and slide Garrett to the 2.

Self also appears to be playing to prevent Baylor from getting out in transition so we're gonna get destroyed on the glass tonight too so KU has to make shots to have any chance.

John Higgins is reffing tonight, does anyone really expect balanced officiating when he does a KU game?

Baylor Game • Jan 19, 2021 02:15 AM

Baylor is the best defense in the country and Self still hasn't developed an offense suited for this personnel grouping. This team really needs to base its offense on pick and rolls and screen and rolls.

Cheapest Way To Watch KU Basketball... • Jan 17, 2021 07:04 PM

It's getting to the point where cord cutting isn't guaranteed to be cheaper anymore because of everyone having their own streaming platform. You still have to have an ISP to watch at home which isn't that cheap, and usually more expensive per month when not bundled with another servoce. You'd need a subscription TV service and decent one is going to start at about $50 per month and up because not all include a sports package with channels like FS1, CBS Sports, or NBC Sports. Then you'd need an ESPN+ subscription to see games like the one KU was supposed to play yesterday which is either $60/year or $6/month. Depending on which subscription package you go with, an antenna to pick up local channels when KU plays on CBS, ABC, or Fox.

Ballpark, you're probably still looking at around $150 per month specifically to watch KU and that doesn't other streaming services like Netflix or Disney+ that could easily push a monthly bill to the $200 per month range.

Decide what all you want and price it out because it's getting to the point where cutting cable isn't guaranteed to be cheaper anymore depending on which subscriptions you have/want.

This is a weird team this year that's hard to get a solid read on.

I guess that's part of the relative inexperience of this team even those with experience taking on new responsibilities this season is creating a very inconsistent team.

There's a lot of relatively inexperienced players on this team. Self's less experienced teams don't have a great track record of making deep runs.

Rock Chalk

TCU isn't a bottom feeder this year. I'm not saying they're a great team, but they're definitely a tier above ISU and KSU this season. I could see them finishing as high as 6th battling with OU and OSU for that spot.

@hawk4life JRE doesn't change much with this team specifically. His skill set doesn't really address the glaring weakness in the paint for KU. He's a bad outside shooter (32%), a terrible rebounder (sub 14%), and average at best defender on his best night.

The answer for the Marcus Garrett issue is, and I can't believe I'm about to type this, Garrett needs to shoot more 3's. He's making 40% from 3 this year, but only taking 2 per game on average. That's how Garrett gets himself easier shots is by taking more 3's and forcing defenses to respect that shot or let him beat teams from deep and open stuff up for others.

The other group I'll throw in are Caribbean players as well, Haiti in particular. That's starting to be an area that's producing some talent as well and there's still a lot displaced people from the earthquake a few years back. Skal Labissiere a few years ago is by far the most high profile example at Kentucky, but I'd also be curious about all of the details of Gethro Muscadin's recruitment as well.

Today was as bad as I can remember KU playing in a long time. It looked like a combination of having an 11am top off combined with having 11 days between games I believe. I think Self messed up by not getting a game on the schedule between Christmas and New Year's because this team came out flat and not in game shape.

The decision making was terrible today. I'm shocked KU had only 12 turnovers but I guess it was because a lot of the bad passes were on drives that should've been shot attempts and instead were bad dump offs and kick outs for worse looks. Only 6 assists on 20 made FG's isn't good. The bench players today we're absolutely atrocious. Only 10 points in 60 minutes from bench players (TGF and Enaruna each had 5).

Just an ugly game all around.

Tshiebwe • Jan 01, 2021 08:31 PM

There's got to be a better way to deal with African recruits because it seems like there's usually a lot of drama involved with high level African recruits. 2 of the 3 players that have KU in the NCAA's cross hairs are Africans.

I don't know what a good solution could be, but African recruiting seems to be the most dirty of all types of college basketball recruiting.

@BeddieKU23 It's not the players that are likely to cause a suspension of the program, it's the coaching and support staff that interact with the players that aren't pretty much isolated in McCarthy that will likely be the issue for KU.

As long as none of the players test positive this week, I'm not worried about a player being the one responsible for an outbreak and shutdown.

Players eligible for next season • Dec 24, 2020 05:12 AM

@Marco Marcus Garrett will be playing professional basketball this time next year. If Mitch Lightfoot isn't playing basketball at KU next year, he'll probably be a GA somewhere next season.

@Bosthawk In theory yes, but it's doubtful Garrett will choose that option.

I don't see how either of them could. If Cuffe reclassifies we're already one over the scholarship limit. They would still count as scholarships, right?

Read my initial response. A situation with either Garrett or Lightfoot returning next year would more than likely involve them paying their own way. That's not an option that makes sense for Garrett because he'll have his degree and be playing pro ball somewhere next season.

Mitch Lightfoot on the other hand while still not very likely to return has a higher % than Garrett. Lightfoot doesn't have a pro future in basketball, already in grad school and should finish up his master's degree in 2022. There's a plausible scenario where Mitch gets enough academic scholarships to cover his costs for next season and comes back in something like a hybrid GA/player-coach role to go mentor the incoming big men because Lightfoot screams future coach with his love and passion for the game.

Mitch coming back on academic scholarships means he'd be a walk on officially and not count against the 13 player limit.

How bad of a team cancer has Fletcher been for Cal to publicly throw him under the bus. Say what you want about Cal, but he's not someone that has the reputation of throwing his players under the bus unlike some other coaches we know. Because of that history, Fletcher has to have done a bunch of really dumb/bad stuff for Cal to throw him under the bus.

Players eligible for next season • Dec 20, 2020 09:47 PM

@wissox I'm sure it'll be like football where not everyone will be invited back and teams will be restricted by scholarship limits so if a senior wants to come back for a super senior year, it may end up being on their own dime some in some cases. I'm betting that a lot of seniors are going to choose to move on based on what's happened with other sports as well and probably most super seniors will end up as grad transfers to mid and low major programs if they're coming from P5 programs.

KU is already full for next season on scholarships as they have 12 players this seasin with 3 incoming freshmen (Adams, Clemence, and Curry) and 2 outgoing seniors (Garrett and Lightfoot). There'd have to be a transfer to open a scholarship, but I'd be curious to see what happens with Lightfoot.

Mitch obviously loves KU, already has his undergraduate degree and I believe would be a year short of his master's degree after this year. Would Self invite Mitch back as kind of a hybrid GA, player/coach type situation to help mentor and coach up the incoming freshmen? That's something I think Self and staff should consider because Mitch has a high enough GPA that he should be able to get enough academic scholarships to cover his costs if there's financial need and then he can go get a coaching/support staff job somewhere with his master's already completed.

Yeah. Good to decent teams in the SEC.... Tennessee, LSU, Florida, Arkansas and...Missouri? A lot of chaff.

Imagine the KU fan base if this happened. Good news is it's so unlikely as long as Self is the coach. Weak 2020 class hurting Cal.

I'm not going to say unlikely because Self loves scheduling a lot of good teams and if KU gets hit with sanctions, what's going on with Kentucky this year becomes a more realistic possibility.

@FarmerJayhawk True, but too often a player is overlooked simply because of size. Not overlooking legions of undersized guys; just saying that size doesn't mean everything when it comes to recruiting. There are some small guys in pro sports doing quite well after doing well at the collegiate level.

Todd Reesing checked pretty much every box other than heighth when looking at a QB. If he was even 6-0 or 6-1, he probably would've been a 4 QB and competing with Colt McCoy at Texas instead of coming to KU. If he was 6-3 or taller, decent chance he could've been a 5 or very high end 4* player.

Missouri up 3 on Illinois with 41 seconds left.

Les Miles has said that he'd like to have 5-8 seniors return next season. Kyron Johnson has already spoken about wanting to return so that's likely 1. Miles has said he'd like convince Parchment to change his mind and stay. Here's the list of potential seniors that could be brought back next season.

• Ricky Thomas, S

• Elijah Jones, CB

• Stephon Robinson Jr., WR

• Thomas MacVittie, QB

• Kwamie Lassiter II, WR

• Ezra Naylor II, WR

• Denzel Feaster, LB

• Nate Betts, S

• Liam Jones, K

• Malik Clark, LG

• Adagio Lopeti, OL

• Chris Hughes, OL

• James Sosinski, TE

• Jack Luavasa, TE

• Sam Burt, NT

Out of that group, I wouldn't mind Stephon Robinson, Kwame Lassiter, Denzel Feaster, Malik Clark, and Sam Burt being the guys Miles asks back. Maybe Ricky Thomas as well with Davon Ferguson officially announcing his intentions to transfer. That group plus Kyron Johnson would be 7 returners and are all guys that would figure to be on the 2 deep next season which is what you'd want in a situation like this.

As much as I'd like to see Drew Prox return, he's just so injury prone that I don't see it being worth bringing him back to likely miss a big chunk of 2021.
