Just what we & Big 12 needed β€’ Jul 22, 2020 01:11 PM

@Marco for body of work I would say Kruger > Drew. Kruger took K State to elite 8, Florida to Final 4 and Oklahoma to Final 4. That team had one star but played as a team. Gutted their way to the FF4 before being humiliated by Villanova.

I think lon made an error building around Tre Young and his roster took a couple years to recover.

Drew has been doing well over the last half decade but he still has a lot to prove.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I hear you. Trump's trade deals were among the less offensive things he's done in office. Also, I don't have a problem with your criticisms of ACA and talking about how it could be improved. Those things are things we should be able to discuss and debate as a country, and the success or failure of which should determine outcomes of future elections.

It's clear why Trump triggers people. Its not attacking ACA or trade deals that make him an awful President, obviously. He's a very real threat to this country, as are those that enable him. We made a grievous error electing him and we're paying for it. As far as hearing each others perspectives, Trump is a poster child for divisiveness, and he needs to get gone before we can start to break down the extremism that is getting a stronger foothold in this country.

@kjayhawks Trump is a horrible businessman. I think Trump was attacked when you mentioned him more than you were attacked. People wanted to add a disclaimer, because Trump is an idiot. And it's hard to call anyone a thing they are really bad at. 6 bankruptcies. :man_shrugging: is someone who can't catch fish a fisherman? Is someone who can't teach a teacher?
I think you were suggesting that his actions were in line with those of a businessman. It's just that a lot of his actions, like tanking the economy by bungling a pandemic in a circus freak show assortment of ways, make one think he would never be a businessman if he wasn't Fred's golden boy.

@mayjay Nice. I had him on my fantasy team last (abbreviated) season. He was dynamic when he was healthy. The Knicks thinks he's one of their franchise cornerstones if he can put it together. He was just oft injured. We'll see. He might have been really good at KU.

@jayballer73 it's everywhere. here in Virginia we have a governor's order to wear them in public but my neighbors still routinely comingle and under 6 feet without masks. The worst problem is that their kids hang out constantly without masks. I wish people would understand that their children too have to make sacrifices. This is a nurse, a football coach and a police officer. Once the virus hits one of them it will roll through them all. They also all quietly think that they've already had it. I hope for everyone's sake that they are right. Really unhappy with people using their kids as an excuse to be irresponsible. Weak.

The "crap on Trump" thread β€’ Jul 19, 2020 01:11 PM

142,000 US deaths. Disinterest and apathy from the president to contain the virus. His intent all along was expressed early "the virus will just run through us like a wave" (from memory). 142,000 largely preventable deaths. That's 47.3 times the number of deaths when Osama bin Laden hit the World Trade Center and he was considered the worst kind of terrorist.

@benshawks08 thanks for this.

We detected COVID-19 in 11.8% of household contacts; rates were higher for contacts of children than adults. These risks largely reflected transmission in the middle of mitigation and therefore might characterize transmission dynamics during school closure

Let's Cancel Cancel "Cancel Culture"! β€’ Jul 17, 2020 11:42 AM

I agree that we need to address Cancel Culture. However, I think we need to be careful to recognize the issue for what it is.

1 This is essentially a presentation issue in UX. We don't need to force people to honor other opinions so much as we need to expose them to them in a constructive manner. We live in bubbles with very little casual exposures to others. Technology has significantly altered humanity and its effects are largely ignored by politicians. We need voices for the sciences at the forefront of policy making.

2 We also need to address the underlying concerns by appealing to a common denominator. This leads us I think to a need for more empathetic, elastic legislators. Certainly there are these people available even in the midst of cancel culture. These people must be raised up and championed, not kicked to the curb for being neither black nor white.

Do We Need N95 Masks For Everyone? β€’ Jul 15, 2020 09:45 PM

Why the hell don't we have N95 masks for everyone? 4 months later.... Does the miniscule size of the government contract with those 3 companies look stupid now?

@nuleafjhawk if I get too negative please keep me in check. Right now I'm angry but not feeling negative but I don't want to cross a line so I'm counting on you.

Do We Need N95 Masks For Everyone? β€’ Jul 15, 2020 09:44 PM

@approxinfinity said in Do We Need N95 Masks For Everyone?:

@HighEliteMajor said in Well Bowlsby pretty well set it straight:

@approxinfinity You're not saying that we should have 300,000,000 N95 masks, right? The use of those is recommended to rotate 5 every five days. So over 1.5 billion?

I am saying exactly that. I don't think 1.5billion is feasible but if everyone had one (just one per person), they could attend all critical public functions with a real mask, while still observing eased distancing.

The COVID-19 particle is between 140 and 60 nm in diameter. N95 masks are rated at .3 microns (or 300 nm) though this varies between 100 and 300 nm by manufacturers. So sure, the n95 is not guaranteed to block transmission. However, they are much much better than surgical masks and surgical masks are 3x as effective as homemade masks. Homemade masks are only better than wearing nothing. I need to make a spreadsheet of this data with links to sources and my remaining questions. But yes, everyone should have an n95 mask.

The gov contract was for 39 million masks to be made by Owens and Minor, 3M and Honeywell. So 13 million each. For I believe $133 mill. What was the limiting factor here? Money or capacity? Surely with trillions of dollars in a bailout we could have spent more than $133 mill on the one piece of critical PPE to preventing transmission?

"We want our country safe. We don't--unlike Biden, we don't want to have criminals pouring into our country." -- Trump today

β€œAfter reviewing the development of the spread of COVID-19, Mexico brought up to the United States the extension for another 30 days of restrictions to non-essential land travel along its common border,” -- Mexican Ambassador Martha Barcena today.

Congratulations, Donald Trump, you "secured our borders" by making the United States the epicenter of a global pandemic.

@Crimsonorblue22 I mean Jesus Christ. I didn't watch a single episode of The Apprentice because I had zero interest in listening to a soulless idiot wield power over people less privileged than he. Little did I know that half this country would some day want to subject us ALL to his despotic lunacy. Come on people! Learn to judge character! Or, if you realized what he was and voted for him anyway, please let's come to an agreement now that he's not fit to be President and that we'll never again vote for someone so stupid and selfish.

The "crap on Trump" thread β€’ Jul 14, 2020 10:12 PM

Listened to The Daily today and they reran an episode from mid March that I remember listening to then. They interviewed a doctor in Italy who explained that 30000 people had tested positive and 2000 had died. 20 had died at his hospital that day. He explained how visitors weren't allowed and people were dying alone. How they decided who would get the limited beds : younger patients getting priority on beds because the old likely would not survive. I remember my sadness then. It was a disaster. Now look at us.

Last week that Italian doctor's hospital had zero Covid patients, and they had a moment of silence for the dead, and a round of applause for the survivors. He was knighted for his efforts. They overcame.

We've done nothing. We squandered the warnings. We've fought with the scientists. We've reopened when we shouldn't, neglected to wear masks when we should. We've got teenagers running around on the beaches without a care, a deathtoll piling up, and politicians who want to open our schools in the middle of this.

What plane of hell is the United States in right now? Is Donald Trump an idiotic Antichrist?

Differentiating fact from opinion on COVID-19 β€’ Jul 14, 2020 07:40 PM

@justanotherfan :hundred_points:

@benshawks08 it's a spectrum. White Democrats should be asked to give a little more, within reason. This is where I think socialist policies are more attractive. Spend more on education for all, which also means spending more on black people. Healthcare for all, etc.

@benshawks08 said in How white Democrats poll on "Big Ideas" to fix racial divide:

This quote Has been and continues to be very true in my experience:

β€œ The broader finding here is clear: White Democrats β€” definitely before Floyd was killed but most likely afterward too β€” are more circumspect about ideas promoting racial equality that might be disruptive to the status quo for white people.”

Racism (individual and systemic) continue to be an issue beyond political divides.

So re: your point here, I agree that there is racism on both sides, but I don't take the quote you used to be indication of a racist view. Of course they are more circumspect about policies that could disrupt their own wealth. That's human nature. It is a balancing act between individual and systemic wealth. I know you did not say this specifically, but I feel there is an implication that needs to be dismissed. Seeking a balance between individual wealth and systemic wealth for all does not make one racist.

The "crap on Trump" thread β€’ Jul 11, 2020 07:12 PM

The polls are so overwhelmingly pro-Biden. I see no basis for your assumption that Trump will win in a landslide other than fantasy fan-fiction @kjayhawks.

To your second point, as I said a few posts up, this goes beyond politics, it's evil vs not evil. By evil I'm referring to Trump being an incompetent heartless idiot, and all of his cronies being on board for enabling this hellride. This is way beyond traditional Republican and Democratic positions. It's about the people.

The "crap on Trump" thread β€’ Jul 11, 2020 05:40 PM

@benshawks08 Jesus. Can we exercise our right to be optimistic? I feel like that's been taken away from us.

This election isn't just about politics. It's about evil vs not evil.

Evil will lose when it is exposed because evil is hated, because evil violates the golden rule.

I anticipate a resurgence of true morality in this country. Better times ahead.

Is Keon Coleman good enough to get minutes for Self or is that pillow talk?

@jayballer73 in my mind, if we were taking this seriously, we would stop activities until Covid is under control, not starting anything early to avoid doing it later. That doesn't make sense to me. But neither has most of our response to this pandemic.

I know there is disappointment, uncertainty and sacrifice involved here, but the sacrifice should be the things other than lives. And the uncertainty should be about those things, not what the plan is to combat Covid. It's mind boggling that we don't have an agreed upon approach. And it's because we want to keep all the other things we are juggling up in the air.

This country will be stronger for all of this. It has to be. Just as any war where hundreds of thousands of people die, we as a country and as a planet have to learn from this and get better at handling pandemics, and reevaluate what it means to be among the living and what we want life to be like for each of us individually and for everyone as a society. I look forward to a United States of America!
