@RockChalkinTexas I love it! That's a lot of garden to tame. Wish I had fence to keep the critters out. I made a bunch of pepper spray by throwing some peppers and garlic in a food processor and then mixing it with a gallon of water and some handsoap. My garden smells like my cooking (always heavy on the peppers and garlic!) when I spray it. I can't imagine it not being delicious to the squirrels :face_with_tears_of_joy:
Hmm. Did we know that Diallos trainer may have been paid?

Update: we finally caved...
We are going to get married, just the two of us. And then have a little 10 person celebration with friends.
We are going to have a reception in Jersey and KC at a later date when it’s safer to do so.
Good on you, keeping people safe. When this is all over, the memories you will have! My brother got married in the middle of a hurricane.
@RockChalkinTexas It sounds perfect. Are you attracting the hummers with anything? We have a hummingbird feeder that we haven't put sugar water in. We should.
My little guy loves bird watching. We have a pair of robins that have built a nest on the crook of the gutter where it meets the roof and they're constantly on the deck picking up the grass that fell off their nest. He gets so excited :face_with_tears_of_joy:
It's weird being at home so much with the weather still being crisp. Time has slowed down and it had been moving so fast. I'm thankful for that part.
I'm really glad to hear you're doing well!
@BeddieKU23 we finally got the rest of our indoor plants in the ground. But even our "sunny" garden gets only about 8 hours of light with all the trees foliage in. I would be happy to replace our front lawn with beds but my wife has made it clear that this option is not on the table. ;)
A marble quarry? Wow! Where?
I've been thinking about GOT but don't want to watch the tail when they're mailing it in. I dont think we've rewatched Season 4. Good thought.
Our youngest has been slow to walk (he's the best crawler I've ever seen fwiw lol) but he seems very in tune with when he will poop and warns us when we will need to change him. He's 15. Just kidding. Hopefully we can get him potty trained early.
Impressed with your house renovations. Ive got windows on the front of the house that I need to replace and a treehouse I need to build. But... I've needed to do this for quite some time lol. I need to dig deep and knock it out!
@wissox Congrats on catching the salmon. Im curious about your lighthouse plans. What kind of rocks have you found? Any interesting ones? And your daughters wedding! Wow. I'm glad you were still able to do it. I hardly remember much from my wedding. What I do was good, but I'm surprised I don't remember more. This split between ceremony and reception seems like it will hopefullt leave the couple with more lasting positive memories. Thanks for all the suggested viewing. We too have watched a lot of TV. The Jordan Documentary has been a nice release. New footage of big sports moments in the past is exactly what the doctor ordered.
@mayjay umm. Did Trump say something?
I hate meetings. 90% of the time they're a tremendous waste of resources. I have been called out for not attending a meeting maybe twice in 7 years at my company. I don't go if it doesn't seem necessary, and I think that is the healthiest policy. We are adults. We should know whether its important or not for us to attend. If on the off chance we missed somethign important by accident, someone else should easily be able to bring us up to speed. That is much more efficient than attending a bunch of meetings that are not important.
@DanR hey thanks for calling out how ridiculous the dishes are atm. Reminded me to ease up on my boys. Dishes are their chore and it's often pulling teeth, but the volume is crazy right now.
@jayballer73 Thanks for sharing your recollections of your garden as a kid. You paint a vivid picture and it's beautiful man.
Once my kids get going they're into it. Certainly breaks up sitting in the house all day, which is what we did most of the week. And with it being wet and overcast, the hammock doesn't have the same allure today.
We took a drive yesterday. Amazed at how busy everything was (worries me), but that's a story for a different thread.
@DanR I tried to grow mixed greens with grow lights vut when I moved them outdoors the stems were too weak and a thunderstorm last night wiped them out. I think I'm going to reboot by planting seeds in a shadier part of the garden. Need our salads!
Thanks for the recommendations on Brit shows. Have watched season one of end of the ****ing world already and thought it was great. Will look into Happy Valley.
Glad to hear you're painting. I should be writing more. That's what I did at school. English, Religion minor, Poli Sci (9 creds), education minor (30 creds).
@kjayhawks I've been meaning to watch The Last Dance. Maybe tonight.
I was trying to get some cedar planks for an above ground garden but they didn't have any at Lowe's or Home Depot. Asked on Reddit and someone directed me to a good local lumber place. Realizing how dependant I am on the internet for all the answers. I'm appreciating reddit more and more as I start to contribute to it.
@BShark I wish our property was bigger. The neighbors don't do social distancing and walks around the block feel like playing Frogger.
What's the most entertaining thing right now? Need some fresh ideas. I've been working on the garden. Green beans, squash, cucumbers, green onions, potatoes, tomatoes, celery, carrots, watermelons, cantelope, basil, jalepenos. Anyone getting into anything enjoyable? Also we watched Mindhunter. Not for people who can't hear vulgar, despicable ideas being expressed, but excellent script and acting.

Mortality rates on this disease are still way high. Almost certainly inflated by lack of tests, so people counted are badly sick...
However, the expected mortality rate is 2% on the disease, but currently in the states, its:
8% in NY - 19.4k dead / 242.5k cases
5.4% nationwide - 41.4 kdead / 746.4 cases
4.4% nationwide without NY - 22k / 503.8 cases
Showing how important it is that our healthcare system does not get overwhelmed like NY, but also, alarmingly high. Lets watch this number and see it go down as testing becomes more prevalent.
But this should be a wake up call to anyone thinking that we're even close to opening everything back up. We need
1. that mortality rate closer to the ballpark of the flu if possible, .1%, or 54x less deaths per cases than present.
2. Readily available testing everywhere. This is not optional.
3. Social distancing policies in place. eased, but still in place. This includes manditory N95 masks readily available to everyone to always be worn in public
4. Contact tracing in place for all active cases
Bishop Glenn held a church service on March 22 despite warnings about social distancing. During the sermon, he preached about not being afraid of death, telling the congregation, “I firmly believe that God is larger than this dreaded virus,” according to CBS affiliate WTVR
It's amazing how short our attention spans are. We are lemmings.
Here's another article (behind paywall, but just to reiterate my point). If you have kidney issues, please consider that coronavirus can contribute to kidney failure and be extra cautious

He's talking about the 2nd amendment in Virginia because of the recent gun rally in Richmond, playing to fears of his base that the Democratic state congress and democratic governor are going to take away their guns. Never miss an opportunity to incite your gun-toting base in the middle of a pandemic. You can see where his head is.
When Gov Northam gets shot because some idiot heard something different maybe we can finally acknowledge that Trump is a disaster.

Curious if anyone knows what Trump means by "Liberate Michigan," "Liberate Virginia, and save your great 2nd amendment. It is under siege!" and "Liberate Minnesota!" I'm trying to keep an open mind but I guess I don't get the context or message being sent here?
Somewhere between idiotic and revolutionary / treasonous.

@bskeet true and what does "more biased" really mean? That's assuming there is an objective center. Is there one? Does it shift? Which way is it really shifting? Is the political spectrum as we conceive it linearly from right to left an artificial construct that abstracts us away from issues to serve our bipartisan two headed master?
@FarmerJayhawk it is disturbing, I agree. So this study is from Feb 2020 right? I would be very curious what the results of the same study would look like in previous years, for instance pre-Trump.
Hopefully this is a reflection of undergrads perception of the toxicity in Washington, projecting it on their peers who endorse each respective party, and if you subtract Trump and Fox News more extreme bullshit years, i.e. the current faces of the Republican party, liberal students will find a more favorable, tolerant stance toward the other side.
If I assumed that all Republicans rely on Fox for their information I'd have a pretty negative impression as well.
Maybe these voices of tolerance and rational thought from the right need to be heard and seen.
@DoubleDD Sure, I blame you and 61,943,669 other people that voted for Donald Trump. Duh! :)
OK I'm done. It's not worth it. I need to do something more productive. Good night.

@kjayhawks said in The democratic nominee:
@DoubleDD @approxinfinity @DanR We have to be able to see it from the other side without insulting and fighting each other. There is truth to both sides. Have the Dems labeled virtually everything Trump has done including his initial China travel ban racist? Yes, without question. Has Trump back tracked and gave circular reasoning? Yes, without question.
I’m not the one calling names. I’m just posting a different point of view. I guess it’s like how a conservative speaker can’t speak on on a college campus anymore for fear of their life. And conservatives are nazi’s?
Some extreme trolling right here. I didn't call it dumbass trolling. Just extreme trolling.
The point is the Dem party has defied the president at every turn. Ever think how many people got infected that day? Yet we sit here and blame Trump. No blame goes to Nancy
Nancy Pelosi walked around Chinatown on the Feb 24th... How is that defying the President? Your narrative is scrambled here...
Here's what President Trump was doing at the same time:
Feb. 13
In an interview with Geraldo Rivera, Trump characterized the threat of the virus in the U.S. by saying: "In our country, we only have, basically, 12 cases, and most of those people are recovering and some cases fully recovered. So it's actually less."
Feb. 24
In a tweet, Trump wrote, "The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!"
Feb. 26
In a news conference, Trump said: "When you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that's a pretty good job we've done."
Seems like she's jaunting around Chinatown with Trump's blessing? Maybe she actually thought he was making informed statements...
Donald Trump has earned nothing except a swift kick to the curb.
@kjayhawks it seems like there's a whole lot more to Trump's handling of coronavirus than accusations of racism and circular reasoning...
To your point, yeah, we need to stay civil. When Trump is gone we will heal and move on.
@DoubleDD ok. She shouldn't have done that. It was ill-advised. But what's your point? What does Nancy Pelosi walking around Chinatown have to do with the President's clown show?
I don't see why it's so hard to acknowledge that Donald Trump isn't qualified to be president, rather than trying to find some comp of Nancy Pelosi out in public.
I would have done a better job as president handling this crisis. And I'm not special. I'm just some dude. There, I said it. I wasn't wandering around Chinatown late February. I was staying tf home. So I compare the president to me, not to anyone else. And he's a failure. Approxinfinity 4 Prez 2028!
@DoubleDD I think you are missing my point. I don't think he should call you, the person, Mr DoubleDD a troll. However, calling your post a troll is different than calling you a troll in my mind. But it's a nuance you may not see the difference in, and that's fine. People have different sensibilities on that. Doesn't matter.
@DoubleDD the differentiation I'm making is that I read his post as calling you a dumbass troll. But he may have been saying your post was a dumbass troll. Maybe it's semantics but I find the former more offensive. People can do dumb things and that doesn't make them dumb. It leaves open the door to change. Humans are amazingly adaptable. That's my point.
@DanR I may have misread you. Was "troll" a person or an action in your post? Lol
@DanR let's refrain from calling each other [edit] dumbasses. I can get extremely frustrated at @DoubleDD but at least he's trying to have a conversation with people who have differing opinions which is more than we can say about our idiot president. And yes, if @theRealDonaldTrump became a user on here I guess I wouldn't be allowed to call him an idiot anymore and my head would explode.
@DoubleDD Trump sat on his thumbs for a month (and that's a conservative measure) ignoring warning signs and telling the public the coronavirus wasn't issue and that he had a natural gift for being a doctor, proclaiming the closing of the borders as a "mission accomplished" moment, and that he didn't want the Diamond Princess included in his death tally because it would look bad, etc.
If you can't see that this guy is a self-absorbed idiot who was distracted by petty nonsense while coronavirus was spreading in the US, and if you think that the President of the United States doesn't have influence to help stop the spread of a global pandemic, there's nothing I can tell you.
Which is it, very stable genius or idiot who was caught unaware? Or what, did the very stable genius realize what was happening but not do anything because it's the governors' job? This spin job doesn't work.
Stop chugging the hydroxychloroquine.
@justanotherfan said in The democratic nominee:
Donald Trump should not be blamed for not shutting down the country because he does not have that authority. He cannot issue a nationwide "stay at home" order like governors or local officials can. That's outside his power.
So I hold no issue with him on actually shutting down the country.
The problem is the messaging has been confusing at best. Because Trump has a very strong following, when he says something, it resonates with a lot of people, to the point that if he says that something is a big deal, it is a big deal to those people, and if he says something is nothing to worry about, those people won't worry about it.
Doesn't that fanbase include ignorant governors and constituents of governors that are riding on his coattails?
Really hard for me to see the responsibility for lack of consistent shutdowns as being much different from lack of consistent messaging and leadership which had a very direct impact on the lack of consistent shutdowns.
... that someone has exposed which were behind a paywall. I'm merely acknowledging its existence.
