Listened to The Joshua Tree first time in a long long time today. Hit the spot.

U2 was one of the bands I listened to in high school that got set aside when I went to college and never really given my attention again. Their stuff pre-Zooropa is still really great.

Who Will KU Be This Season?...Now • Sep 15, 2018 11:45 PM

Yeah. As much as we talk about the talent of others in our front court Mitch made many a clutch play for us last year. I can see him surprising everyone who doesn't think he'll get minutes.

@mayjay "reputedly" is when it is the general opinion that something is the case. I agree, that doesn't fit @jaybate-1-0 's apparent intent (maybe apparently woudl be better?). I think you're talking more about something like "allegedly" which is when something is said to be a certain way, but there is no proof?

Who Will KU Be This Season?...Now • Sep 15, 2018 04:46 AM

We are going to have one of the deepest frontcourts ever. There is no way Bill doesn't play to this strength. Bill will also want to play length on the perimeter and give PT to the diaper dandies. That means by years end its a core identity of Dotson, Grimes, Vick + endless Bigs, only one of whom shoots from distance with accuracy (Dedrick). That means that "who we are" is:

Lock down and rebound on D.
Feed the hot hand on O, and terrorize the boards.

That means that Udoka is peripheral to the core identity unless he can rebound well. And so is Moore, unless he can D well. Though, I think Self will leave them out there, regardless of whether they are "who we are" or not.

@tis4tim no worries man.

I think Mitch suffers from short shirt syndrome. He might have caught it from Perry Ellis, though my recollection is hazy. Have no fear, most young men outgrow short shirt syndrome when they go pro, and it's a healthy sign that they are not circumventing NCAA rules to get paid collegiately.

@jaybate-1.0 today, the Alamodome; tomorrow, Beijing National Stadium!

Will the focus on anti-corruption legislation on the national stage spill over to areas like college basketball? Or maybe the opposite, will it hog the limelight leaving other seedy underbellies underbellied?

@jaybate-1-0 I just found this guy on the interwebs, inspired by your post. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/author/frank-breslin ↗

Frank Breslin is a retired high-school teacher with 40 years of experience in the New Jersey public school system, where he taught English, Latin, German, and social studies.

Now I am well aware that huffingtonpost can veer wildly left in their stories. This guy appears to have been given wide berth and is apolitical in what I've read; so far so good. In particular, I plan to read the following, having read the first and a browsed a handful of others (you'll see them if you scroll down)

@jaybate-1.0 Your argument that the 1% is disrupting male and female archetypes to divide the 99% is fascinating, and that Serena, being the embodiment of a new female archetype, is being used by larger forces. I don't know that I buy that a conscious effort to divide is present here, but I do think market disruption is key to private sector.

Serena Williams • Sep 12, 2018 01:50 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I like it better. Thank you. I realize that my perspective may seem frivolous. This is why particularly the words chosen to illustrate the exchange in The Post piece matter to me. When they describe the character of Williams in that passage, they omit that in that ceremony, Serena did appear to show emotion and praise to Osaka. They only describe her as stone faced, showing no emotion toward Osaka.

!0_1536760223551_Screenshot 2018-09-12 09.47.37.png ↗

I still think she's a horrible sport on the court and I don't agree with justifying her actions as her being an activist for women's rights; I don't agree that it is appropriate to threaten line judges or call them liars and thieves. I think these things are rediculous.

@JayHawkFanToo I'm not disputing the quotes. I'm saying that whatever they have to say about stonefaces, and whatever they're omitting, or whatever narrative they're selling i'm completely uninterested. Rupert Murdoch and his spin rags are dead to me.

I may even see the situation the same way. But I don't want to be fed an opinion.

Serena Williams • Sep 11, 2018 09:31 PM

@JayHawkFanToo These lines you quoted are from a spin news source it seems, NY Post, i.e. Rupert Murdoch. I haven't seen the ceremony afterward, so not sure I trust the source on anything except assuming that the quotes they extracted to fit their narrative were accurate.

@jaybate-1.0 Ron Artest is your most recent comp though, and that was 14 years ago. Also, I'm pretty sure if a tennis player jumped into the stands and beat a fan they'd be banned for life, even in 2004.

@Kcmatt7 I'm sure you could elaborate with noble things she's done off the court that I'm probably unaware of, but I am inclined to disagree with you when you say she's a fantastic role model. As a professional athlete, your primary platform is on the field / court. You can get larger than that obviously, but first and foremost, your behavior on the court will be what the largest audience sees, and as a role model, what the largest number of people will model behavior after.

@DoubleDD Roe v. Wade is the settled law of the land according to Kavanaugh. So you and I can agree that this is BS that he doesn't believe. Good. We may be getting somewhere.

Conservative Justice • Sep 10, 2018 02:48 AM

@JayHawkFanToo yes, I do see the difference. I was just trolling you. Literal vs interpretive, I suppose. Both sound like BS.

Conservative Justice • Sep 10, 2018 02:28 AM

@JayHawkFanToo hmm. Good find.

The group's stated mission is to "promote the vitality of the U.S. Constitution and the fundamental values it expresses: individual rights and liberties, genuine equality, access to justice, democracy and the rule of law."

Hmm. Imagine that. Lawyers wanting to uphold the Constitution. Oh the horror. Lol

Believe in something • Sep 09, 2018 08:41 PM

@mayjay I get all that, and Agassi and McEnroe were 100% horrible a-holes on the court too and those two are from 30 to 40 years ago. This doesn't excuse her behavior.

I'm tired of hearing about her like she's a martyr or a strong noble woman, especially to hear her speak about herself in those terms. She's a spoiled mega-rich brat who happens to be female, have a child, have a strong frame, and be black. The latter set of characteristics do not make the former set invisible. She is not a likeable person.

Here's the quote, after the ref penalized her for being coached from the stance:

“You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live. You are the liar,” said Williams. “When are you going to give me an apology? You owe me an apology. Say it you’re sorry. And you stole a point from me. You’re a thief, too!”

and then later...

“I thought he took the game from me, other men said other things,” said Williams, “I am here fighting for women’s right and women’s equality. (He) made me feel like a sexist remark, he never took a game from a man for saying thief.”

This isn't an isolated incident. Remember when she previously threatened to kill a line judge? I'm pretty sure Serena has the worst attitude on the court of any high profile ranked player, male or female (I'm willing to hear otherwise). Her reputation precedes her. I'm not certain that if her modern male counterparts said the same things they wouldn't get the same treatment. I guess we'll never know because they have more class.

Congrats to Naomi Osaka! Sorry your childhood hero is a horrible sport and overshadowed your victory by making it all about her.

@JayHawkFanToo I'd be happy to hear what groups you think are comparable to the Federalist Society and liberal. Show me a liberal organization that cultivates liberal judges from college all the way to the Supreme Court.

Anyway, my point was that we know where Kavanaugh stands. You can window dress him, call him a great baseball coach, or cart out someone on the liberal side willing to shill for him. That doesn't change a thing.

Beaty DESERVES a 5 Year EXTENTION!!!! • Sep 09, 2018 06:49 PM

@JayHawkFanToo interesting. thanks for this. Is this 2017? Where'd you find it?

Conservative Justice • Sep 09, 2018 06:19 PM

@JayHawkFanToo so this is an endorsement for Hillary Clinton in the eyes of conservatives right? Wait... A knock against Brett Kavanaugh... Hold on, this is aimed at liberals to make Kavanaugh appealing.... But... real liberals hate Hillary too... I'm all confused. Nobody liked Hillary so nobody should like Kavanaugh and so this lady is just weird, right? :)

This is just pillow talk. The fact of the matter is that Kavanaugh is a Federalist Society product and it's very clear where he stands and he's not going to go Sandra Day O'Conner on us when Roe v. Wade gets challenged or Affirmative Action gets challenged.

Serena Williams is out of control @Crinsonorblue22 . She wants to be seen as a powerful female who is a role model and fighting for women's rights, but really that seems to be a badge of honor she hides behind to go out on the court and be a horrible person.

I wasn't super surprised the way Frank stepped up his senior year to average 20 and 5, being that we knew how tough he was, how hard he worked, and how good he was his junior year. That being said, getting to that next plateau that he got to was still amazing and difficult. He has to be part of this convo even if it was not a shock to a lot of us.

Sportsmanship and life • Sep 06, 2018 04:30 PM

I play an online game. Most of my opposition is college kids. So frequently I hear them say in their chat "ez" and brag about their accomplishments when they do well. Much less frequently, I hear people call out specific things others do well.

I make a point of praising particular plays that are executed well, and call people out for disrespecting their opponents.

I've coached a lot of youth sports and seen some atrocious behavior from kids in handshake lines that does not get corrected by their coaches.

I'm concerned that we are creating a culture of "me" with little investment in others. Our standards are getting inverted.

To me, children insult. Children brag. Adults praise others, or offer constructive feedback.

To me, this is a big problem that is not being addressed. Sport is a facsimile of life.

Does every kid need a participation trophy? Really, I don't care about that. That's a talking point that people hung their hat on that is arbitrary.

Much more importantly, kids need community, where they are recognized, encouraged to interact, and they recognize the positive qualities of others and challenge them to be better people.
