@brooksmd lol my 7 year old does the whole routine between in the batter's box just like certain Nationals. Our BP sessions used to be so quick! It is absolutely ridiculous, I agree. I think making them do it without having time granted is a fantastic idea ;)

@wissox nailed it. Plus, local teams should be basic cable, not part of some expensive package. The money is ruining baseball.

@Kcmatt7 Baseball is a beautiful American opera, perfectly proportioned, and timeless!

That being said, out of respect for a generation that has no patience, I'll relent on mound visit limitations, and review of homeruns.

The other stuff.. man! That's baseball! It's not about getting the damn thing done! It's about the experience. Watching your dude round the bases is classic! And the last thing in the world I want to focus on when watching a pitcher deal is a stupid digital counter decrementing. That's just awful.

KUs Greatest Coach??? • May 01, 2017 03:09 PM

@dylans nicely done! I wonder if you can compare someone like Allen to Self. If they were to coach against each other my first thought is Self would coach circles around Allen. But as you mentioned, coaching D-I wasn't the all encompassing thing then that it is now.

You guys see this? I like this as much as the ambidextrous pitcher switching pitching hand. Good on the Yanks to be experimenting.

Paul Pierce • May 01, 2017 02:49 AM

@JayHawkFanToo Sure. Paul did spend a lot of time on the bench watching recently :)

Paul Pierce • May 01, 2017 01:42 AM

I wonder if he'll reach out to Ainge / Stevens about coaching in Boston? He had been thinking about it in 2014 www.cbssports.com/nba/news/paul-pierce-says-he-and-kevin-garnett-talked-about-coaching/

Mason and Graham vs Mario and Russ • May 01, 2017 01:35 AM

@HighEliteMajor I think I'd prefer Frank and Mario over Frank and Sherron. Mario was a killer. I think he goes for 16 against Oregon and steals a couple passes.

I think Frank turned a corner that Sherron never did of not making ill advised drives. Maybe my memories are skewed, but I remember getting a lot more frustrated at Sherron. Whereas I don't remember getting irritated at Mario's decision making, he always seemed to be in the right place and make the right decision.

Frank an NBA All star? • May 01, 2017 01:22 AM

@REHawk one can hope. I do think it would be really good for Frank to check out the world for a few years abroad if NBA doesn't happen, before coming back. From small town PBurg to Lawrence, it's a big world out there. At this point he might try to suit up and get on the court if the freshman punks don't listen.

Nice Streak... • May 01, 2017 12:18 AM

Yeah, as some columnists have pointed out, with a lot of usual contenders faltering hard at the starting gates, it's likely to be a saturated market this year, I think you should move fast to unload.

NBA Combine and why Josh goes #1 • May 01, 2017 12:15 AM

If nbadraft.net is to be believed, 13 of their top 14 projected picks are college kids, only one international. Score one for the NCAA! But, 12 of those 13 are freshman, and the last, a sophomore...

!0_1493597805304_Screenshot 2017-04-30 20.12.18.png ↗

@brooksmd he did! What a day! 6 for 6 with 10 RBIs. Maybe all is not lost. Always feels good beating the crap out of the Mets, even if they're looking broken this year.

NBA Combine and why Josh goes #1 • Apr 30, 2017 11:07 PM

@BeddieKU23 I guess you're right. Fultz is what he is and Boston either takes that or Jackson.

Ball feels like he's hiding to me from an athleticism standpoint. Am I reading this correctly that he only shot 7.6% of his shots from 2 pt range?

http://hoop-math.com/UCLA2017.php ↗

If so, remains to be seen if he can play a pick and roll game. Here's a write up about it.

http://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/why-lonzo-ball-isnt-the-surefire-nba-superstar-people-seem-to-think-he-is/ ↗

Hope Boston still has an open mind and gives Josh a long look over Fultz.

NBA Combine and why Josh goes #1 • Apr 30, 2017 08:13 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Thats true, but in the case of Ball, Fultz and Jackson I think the latter two skipping the combine feels like they're hiding a lack of athleticism and a lack of height (for the 2) and motor, respectively. While there were never those doubts with Embiid and Wiggins.

NBA Combine and why Josh goes #1 • Apr 30, 2017 05:47 PM

Plus with Josh's passing ability he can operate as a point forward and give them a matchup problem if that's what they seek to get from 2 pgs

NBA Combine and why Josh goes #1 • Apr 30, 2017 05:46 PM

Supposedly Ball won't be attending the combine. And Fultz will but won't do on court activities.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/19273805/nba-invites-more-60-players-draft-combine ↗

With an MVP caliber PG on the roster in Isiah Thomas, I think it's more likely Boston selects Josh #1 than Fultz or Ball. I see stories about Boston favoring Fultz but it doesn't add up to me. Feels highly redundant. Their backcourt is already crowded with Bradley and Smart.

NFL Draft • Apr 30, 2017 06:12 AM

I reread and edited what I posted earlier. Sorry about disrespecting football. I have my opinions, but I acknowledge that they are biased, probably unfairly, and I know there are lots of decent people that play football and can keep their aggression in check off the field.

@wissox I agree we did but it takes a tough dude to not slump in the leadoff spot. And every one of our hitters struggled at lead off last year. Don't want Turner there because he can also hit for power. He went 0 for 3 at lead off today. Right back where we were last year minus a couple guys that could have helped the staff.

NFL Draft • Apr 30, 2017 01:31 AM

@DoubleDD I dont know this kid, nor do I want to know him. There are the gladiators on the gridiron and there is my world, and never the twain shall meet.

My 7 year old kid was playing basketball on the blacktop when a football player kid tackled him and broke his foot a couple months ago. Before I had back problems I was playing pickup when the guy guarding me, a football player, came up behind me and pulled me down while I was shooting. My back has been downhill since. I have a pretty negative opinion about the mindset it takes to play football, hard to be cool with it. Not sure how these guys can be violent on the field and peaceful off of it. But, I understand gladiatorial sports and their appeal. Every culture has it's bloodletting.

Why @wissox why?!

Such a promising start to the offense for my Nats, coming in waves, scored 42 runs in 3 games against Colorado. And then down goes Adam Eaton, torn ACL, and all my optimism for this season is dashed.

NFL Draft • Apr 29, 2017 02:31 PM

Mixon pulled his "get-out-of-harassing-and-punching-a-gay-woman-in-the-face-free!" card. You only get one of those. Let's get him back on the field where he's encouraged to assault other humans.

Edit: I guess I misread. The woman wasn't gay, Mixon called her friend a faggot. And apparently he was accused of punching some girl before in high school as well. And he's an RB. So everything I said is a lie. Unless you consider smashing into someone as an RB assault. I'll stick to my guns on that one.

Larry Bird • Apr 28, 2017 07:33 PM

Remember when the Pacers traded for Brandon Rush to play the SF and Paul George was just a twinkle in Fresno State's eye?

@HighEliteMajor :100: I have no problem with Caepernick but you're right on the money. The lack of objectivity, delivered by unlikable windbags like Stephen A Smith is, for sports coverage, about the worst offering I could possibly imagine.

@justanotherfan I think the quality of programming on ESPN has really suffered because they are often a monopoly, especially with these exclusive TV right deals, and operate in a vacuum. If they were getting their asses handed to them by other companies delivering better material, they'd be more adaptable. I do agree that the way ESPN is structured including the way their contracts are structured is doomed to failure and threatens to drag the sports they cover down with it.

Too bad for Eamonn Brennan. Thought he did some decent stuff.

@HighEliteMajor The story about Serena calling
Nastase racist that they ran with pissed me off. The guy asked if Serena's bi-racial child would be "chocolate with milk". To me, Nastase is a product of a bygone era, and hypersensitive to race. Serena too is hypersensitive to race. Kids today don't look at that baby and say "oh, that kid is 50% black". They say "oh, that's a cute baby". It's unfortunate that that's what came out of his mouth, and a really stupid way of announcing his hyperawareness to race, but that comment alone doesn't make him a racist. It's interesting to me that ESPN changed the title of their article. If you search for it, it comes up on Google as:

"Serena disappointed by Nastase's 'racist' words"

https://www.google.com/search?q=espn+nastase+serena&oq=espn+nastase+serena&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i64.6791j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 ↗

When you click on it, the title is now:

"Serena Williams disappointed by Ilie Nastase's remarks about her unborn child"

The second is more accurate. Also, more clearly a non-story.

KU's Next BBall coach - a game! • Apr 26, 2017 11:47 PM

I'm not a Few fan. This was by far his most successful season and most talented team ever and I would be shocked if he is able to repeat it.

@Crimsonorblue22 ha well in this case I didn't say anything because I figured we'd just not give him any points back if his post got more than 3 thumbs up.

Transfer trepidation • Apr 26, 2017 07:15 AM

@dylans I often say the opposite. Imagine how less dominant UConn women would be if they had a reason to leave early.

KU's Next BBall coach - a game! • Apr 26, 2017 07:09 AM

@dylans lol! I can't argue with your logic here, practically Joey Buckets Lunardi level of airtight prognostication

@drgnslayr plus (and correct me if I'm wrong @jaybate-2-0) building classes transfer-first seems to lessen the shoeco affect of recruiting , a year removed from the AAU Shoeco complex.

@Crimsonorblue22 Nice!

KU's Next BBall coach - a game! • Apr 26, 2017 03:37 AM

@wissox I didn't have the pleasure of watching KU during the Hinrich era. Was he well spoken in post game talks? Always seemed like a quiet vet to me in the league. His teammates loved him and he worked hard (Joakim Noah called him Kirky Worky). That def translates, just was curious how he well spoken he was.

KU's Next BBall coach - a game! • Apr 26, 2017 01:46 AM

@DoubleDD ha! Love it.

@chriz that list left off Withey. Withey and Young were the first really successful transfers for us.

Looking at that list I can see no downside to the transfer strategy. Those guys were all beloved. It seems more suited to Bill's team anatomy than going after unproven top shelf kids that we might only get 1 or 2 years out of anyway.

KU's Next BBall coach - a game! • Apr 26, 2017 01:19 AM

@Lulufulu ok! I agree, has to be a fine fine coach. My guess is Fred Hoiberg. I think he's got his eyes on the job and got in thick with Bill when leaving Iowa St.

KU's Next BBall coach - a game! • Apr 26, 2017 01:12 AM

Ok let's play a game to guess KUs next BBall coach. Hopefully we don't get to verify the results for a long time. Think of this as a time capsule that might be fun to open up in a decade.

Here are the proposed rules:

  • each post must contain only one guess.
  • first person to guess correctly gets 15 pts, second person gets 10, third gets 6, fourth gets 4, fifth gets 3, sixth 2, seventh 1.
  • for every wrong guess you get -1 pt, unless you get more than 3 thumbs up. That gets you your point back.
  • any post that is modified is disqualified.
  • don't delete or purge posts. Just don't be that guy. I think I can see if you do, but just don't k?

Seem fair?

@DoubleDD @BShark that's right. Even so, it's important that these kids know they have a buyer that is offering the right stuff before declaring a transfer. That's why it is good for a. Kansas to be a repeat transfer destination and b. have a couple high level destinations also in the transfer business. Like putting a house on the market, you want to do it when you feel the market is strong. And it seems like it is there now so no need to do stuff below board.

Transfer U ... 4 guard lineup.... How much shop did Self talk with Hoiburg?

@dylans I reread your thread about transfers you covered the McLemore angle there. Guess we are all dreaming bout the same thing. Bill Self 4 Prez!

@BShark makes perfect sense. Something tells me Preston isn't going to be an OAD. If he ends up being one it's likely Bill didn't get as much out of him as he was hoping by recruiting him. Or maybe regardless of whether Preston contributes at a high level, keeping the OAD pipeline open is important enough.

@DoubleDD yeah man I wonder the same thing. My thought about being the clean way is if you average a couple transfers a year and you're a blue blood program like KU, that's all you need to advertise. The kids will find you.

So as I said before I think Bill is attacking all the neglected vectors. Short, under recruited Towson commit from PBurg. Backup center from Africa that only played 3 years ball in high school. Grad transfer, other transfers, partial qualifiers. We got all these pipelines. It's a fantastic thing.

And I'll say one last thing. I think this stuff is happening in tandem with Hudys masterpiece. Her longevity project. Self knows if he can keep the short rotation healthy, which he likes anyway, a short rotation, then all of these things play together. The proof there is in the bionic POY.

I also neglected to mention McClemore and Jamari. Not transfers but partial qualifiers. I don't mean to get hung up on Tarik as he got to play immediately and I wanted to also continue on @BShark s point that these guys that sit a year and develop and bring it all in practice. Get the old school out of their system, get KUs system figured out off camera. Low pressure confidence building. It couldn't make more sense. Bill gets to stock up a roster like Coach Cal without managing as many egos at once.

@BeddieKU23, you mentioned your concern about the short rotation with the transfers in the Moore thread and I've been mulling over this idea the last couple days. I just had sinus surgery this AM (all good) and am on pain pills so if this post doesn't get where it needs to be can someone carry the idea over the finish line please?

@BShark also made a good post here regarding high level transfers and attitude and @JayHawkFanToo you also said something that jived with this.

I couldn't agree more. I don't think it is a coincidence that Self is grabbing 3 high level transfers this year, and Malik and Cundliffe last year. That love for Tarik thread says it all.

Bill Self is a builder. What he builds is culture.

And in that light Tarik is just as valuable a recruit of that class as Wiggins and Embiid. Not as valuable as Frank. But the two wunderkinds? Yes!

On court, Wiggins might have been saving the goods. Embiid gave us what he could but got injured and couldn't come back.
These two get us high level OAD recruits, but did they contribute to the culture more than Tarik? I would argue no. This guy came in a wise grad student with an exemplary attitude that settled a young team and did everything Self asked him to. And now after the fact, the floodgates are open for high level transfers. Even if Tarik was a OAD grad student he was a recent exanple that this is what Kansas does for a transfer. Nevermind that it didn't work out for Mickelson, look at Tarik and Withey before. Bill has clearly polished this sell and I think we owe Tarik a debt for helping Bill knock the dust off it and make it shine.
