KU BBall Sucks! (FIRE DRILL) β€’ Oct 25, 2013 09:28 PM

I thought about this a while, but haven't posted because we've been really civil and there haven't been problems. Really, people just shouldn't be jerks. We can deal with stuff as it comes up. Don't sweat it, we got this! :)

Provider had issues β€’ Oct 25, 2013 07:16 PM

Sorry for the outage guys.. provider had issues. Looks like they're back up now.

If they go down again, apologies in advance. I believe they are experiencing growing pains as earlier they were upgrading their servers.

My belief is that this is a rare occurance (my friends who have had servers on them have had 0 downtime for the last 2 months, save Saturday's maintenance and today). Hopefully this is the case.

Embedding pictures β€’ Oct 25, 2013 05:17 PM

I'm not sure.. is it, since technically its being served to the browser from the other site without ever having been on this site? I don't know the legal line here.

[Thanks for] stuff from you guys! β€’ Oct 25, 2013 12:12 PM

Ok guys, who's got some pictures for the site? Anything that isn't a branded logo that we can use... several of you have mentioned they thought pics would be neat, but only @Wishawk sent me some. Send me some pics please, and I'll see if we can fit them into the site layout.

Also, trying to come up with quotes for the Message of The Day (MOTD) can be tough - I'm short on inspiration re: content. If you guys have quotes, please throw them in this thread (link). Thanks!

Message of The Day Quotes β€’ Oct 25, 2013 12:11 PM

Need message of the day quotes -- can you guys drop a few on me so I have something to cycle through? If they're current and entertaining, brilliant, if they're not current but memorable, great too. I want something I can fall back on and cycle through if we don't have current quotes so I don't need to feel bummed out that I'm not jaybate when I stare at a blank yellow box with a blinking cursor in it and nothing comes to mind. Thanks!

Live Coverage β€’ Oct 25, 2013 12:01 PM

I'm considering options for a chatroom style page for in game discussion, but this may take some time to implement. Honestly, the autoupdating on the threads and knowing that its mobile friendly out of the box lends itself well to in game updates. But, the layout is not very compact. I'd kind of like to try out a simulation thread (maybe type lines to a common nursery rhyme so we know what the sequence is supposed to be) as if it were an in game chat, to evaluate on ease of use (how well does it autoupdate, how easy is it to follow along what's happening), performance, and anything else we might not be considering.

Also, if you guys are curious, my test site currently lives at www.localgeneral.com β†— -- so I prove out stuff there before implementing it here. You're welcome to play around there too, and at some point if I have a feature I think we should test, I'll drop in there and maybe ask you guys to hop over if anyone wants to.

Live Coverage β€’ Oct 25, 2013 10:49 AM

Awesome cj! Looking forward to it.

@JayHawkFanToo Ha, I had to do a doubletake when I read global's post too :)

Who are you? β€’ Oct 25, 2013 02:50 AM

@drgnslayr This weekend I'll look into what kind of features I might be able to add; agree with you, we have a lot of power to fix this place up and I'm all for empowering you guys and doing what I can too.

So if its a trailer home, let's at least say a trailer home on a 100 acre lot, and the land is all ours!

Moderator rights for all! β€’ Oct 25, 2013 02:35 AM

I'm pretty confident I can reverse anything Thread Moderators could do, and I'm not really worried about everyone having thread rights granted them at a certain level. It'll be a good thing.

I'm really glad we have a deep team with the new rules coming into play.

You can tell Calipari is giddy β†—, given his depth of talent.

Fact or Fiction? β€’ Oct 25, 2013 02:12 AM

I'd be very surprised if Kentucky wins.

Who are you? β€’ Oct 25, 2013 02:07 AM

@danr you hit it on the head. For the longest time, their ads were not geotargeted or in any other way targeted. They were serving me ads for Lawrence restaurants and I live in VA. To me this means they weren't making money on their ads. Now, I've noticed that their ads are suddenly targeting me as of today, based upon recent Google searches I've done (it was an ad for Redis, the data store for this site, which is kind of funny).

Well the important part, as Dan mentioned, is that ads are sold by CPM (Costs per impression β†—) and so if you visit the comments 50 times, versus visiting it once or twice, thats the lion's share of the advertising revenue if they implemented their ads the standard way (which they didn't before if they were trying to sell me food in Lawrence).

They most definitely are feeling the pain of losing that revenue, considering they're trying to implement targeted ads now. The blog section is more crucial to them than the story for CPM.

Moderator rights for all! β€’ Oct 25, 2013 01:52 AM

Ok, you don't have moderator rights yet... But read this.

So, there's a feature that grants Manage Thread status to people at a certain threshold of Reputation. I want to bring that number down to get people involved (possibly to 10? Seems low, but you guys are a tough crowd - not giving each other rep!), but its not configurable at the moment. There's also a higher threshold that unlocks Manage Users status. I would also bring that threshold down I think.

Of the features I have as admin, I'm assuming they correspond as follows:
Manage threads - move threads from bucket to bucket, and I'm assuming delete messages? (not sure if this falls into the next status)
Manage Users - again, not sure about delete messages (this actually just deactivates the msg, it doesn't delete it), and Ban Users. I'm imagining that this is also not permanent.

It is my full intention to give you all these burdens.. erhmm cough i mean these rights as soon as those thresholds are configurable.

How do Favourites and Reputation Work? β€’ Oct 24, 2013 08:39 PM

Funny :) you nailed it except for the favourite part. I had nothing to do with that!

sorry I didn't see your th read first. Haste makes waste! thanks Paris

@RockChalkinTexas Board is now on latest and you should be ok with IE9. Maybe now that you're using a different browser you'll never want to go back :) .... I haven't confirmed yet though...

(Migration complete) Next stop: performance β€’ Oct 24, 2013 11:02 AM

@careful you --- I had seen a few instances of bad latency like this during peak hours of activity as well, and so thats what prompted the move to the better server. Great report, and please keep me in the loop if the problem resurfaces.

Hmm interesting, not sure syntactically how/if I can @ someone with two names in their handle.

@julian Had to just move the rdb... I wanted to replicate, but then I discovered my provider didn't allow internal networking on the current boxes, so I got distracted rebuilding the new box. Next time man!

Migrating to new server tonight.

At around midnight EST, going to migrate our site to more powerful server. Expect downtime.

example of how to open new window with link --- thinking instead of using the markdown syntax for our story links, and do this which generates a new tab, it will be less disruptive of an experience going back and forth between this site and news sites.

EDIT : I don't think the html will work any more with latest board version.

Thanks to aprox for setting this up! β€’ Oct 23, 2013 05:23 PM

Thanks guys. I want to reiterate that i am really happy with the Nodebb platform and really happy we are on it. I evaluated a couple solutions but was still lucky that we ran with one that has worked out so well. It's been straight forward to setup and maintain and the feature set is great. So big shout out to the developers of Nodebb. They're unsung heroes here.

All is not lost. The internet isn't evil. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Privacy is not a fallacy. Chosen names are not anonymous. They are just chosen and that doesn't mean anyone is hiding behind them. Discretion is the better part of valor. Choose what you share of you. And share the very best of you. Isn't that what great people have a knack for doing?

Someone mind posting any midnight stories?

Items TBD β€’ Oct 22, 2013 03:01 AM

@kchiefs I'd love it if you want to try your hand at skinning the site; all of their themes, at least those that come standard, are minor derivations on the same standard layout. It'd be interesting to see what a real departure from what they've got could look like. I got latest on their repo but the header bar of the layout seemed to have problems; someone here also mentioned that the header bar was too massive on their Nexus 7, so maybe that's somethign we could look at. Also, several people have mentioned pictures and somehow tying them in, and someone sent me a couple pictures of KU campus. Would be interested to see if they and/or other pictures could be included in the layout without being overwhelming somehow. Please email me and we can hash this out further. Thanks man! -- approxinfinity@gmail.com

Are Nested comments and sorting possible? β€’ Oct 22, 2013 02:45 AM

No worries. I asked the guys at NodeBB about it here (link β†—)

:alien: -- thought maybe they included these β†— in the NodeBB posting functionality. nm.

Love it. Enjoyed watching him destroy Dwight Howard (albeit a recovering Dwight Howard) last year in the preseason (link β†—). If JJ Hickson can start there the majority of last season and average a double double, there's gotta be a role for a rebound first guy like TomRob.

Are Nested comments and sorting possible? β€’ Oct 21, 2013 11:48 PM

Agree completely but would be best if Nodebb guys build this into framework. Will request.

KUSports policy discussion. β€’ Oct 21, 2013 10:51 PM

I was trying to account for the comments pushing the stories up to the top of the stack... since we're used to KUSports always scrolling down by timestamp and stories kind of going away naturally because of that, since the comments push the story up, I think it lends to the feeling of things being slightly chaotic and disorganized. Maybe we'll get used to it, but I thought maybe timestamp first would help. If its at the end of the post it would probably get truncated with the ellipses for some of the longer posts. I was also thinking about mentioning it to the NodeBB guys to see if they are planning to add sort options and a configurable default sort. That would be ideal. Or I might try to check in the change myself once I get familiar with their codebase. I agree with you that the synopsis is really the meat of what a human would want to read, the descending postingdate sort should be default for threads that represent news stories.

KUSports policy discussion. β€’ Oct 21, 2013 05:07 PM

Thanks Blown and Dan. It's good advice.

Financially it's not a problem yet but let's see how it plays out if I get more servers. I am not anticipating a problem but I will let you guys know.

I could use the help of a few moderators grooming the forums but I need to know how best we should choose moderators. Also I think it would be good to agree on a standard set of guidelines regarding news posts. Would you agree that the title should be of a standard format : yyyy-mm-dd source synopsis? And I think links should be hyperlinked in the content with no extraneous subcommentary in the initial post for a thread. This keeps things clean and consistent.

Also can we agree that the forum sections regarding the two sports should be only used for links to stories and moderators can help move other stuff to appropriate buckets. If that sounds good who should be moderators? If not let's talk about what else we should consider.

The bottom line goal here is to provide the greatest good for the greatest number of Jayhawk fans. I believe that comes from a reliable consistent experience, ie a stable home board.

Paris, thanks for posting the story.

I'm happy to do everything I can to give this community a nice place to hang out, intact. I would like to make the suggestion that we might give the discussion about going back to KUSports its own thread/threads in the discussion forum.

For me, as I'm sure it was for you, the overnight change in authentication policy and having everyone vanish was disruptive and felt really unsettling. I feel like the talk about going back might be better placed in a concerted discussion on its own thread for when people are seeking it out, instead of being constantly reminded about it. We're in a position of leverage here, we don't need to stress out about it. Can we move this talk over to this thread? (link)

KUSports policy discussion. β€’ Oct 21, 2013 12:26 PM

Dedicated thread for those who want to talk about:
Should we stay? Should we go back to KUSports? Under what conditions should we go back? Etc.

Jayhawks reluctant to run β€’ Oct 21, 2013 04:02 AM

@sarcastichawk Thanks. The way Ryan put it out there, it was pretty much that he didn't like this board because of the layout, which is customizeable. He also made no mention about collaboration.

As far as real-time chat, this chatboard already updates threads in real time, so I believe just creating a chat thread would suffice for in game discussion, but we'll have to see how it performs. So far I'm really happy with the feature set on our CMS and I think it's better than vBulletin, the platform Ryan has chosen. I've seen some pretty negative reviews of vBulletin (link β†—) but I don't have more than a cursory opinion on it at this point.

Our software is pretty new so maybe we'll see some bugs surface, though to date it's done really well. It's actively being worked on very aggressively, and its built on a cutting edge node.js tech stack that allows features like responsive design for mobile, chat, real-time status updates and it runs fast, whereas vbulletin is built on php / mysql and is more of an old school board format.

Jayhawks reluctant to run β€’ Oct 21, 2013 01:31 AM

The offensive repetoire seemed evident from the highlight reel on the KU Sports vid. Who takes the over on scoring 100 in at least one game this year? Given SOS, not sure, but we came close last year, just our bench scoring was anemic. I say over at least one.
