Not even new, ha!

Fair.

Och has to make that wide open three when he gets it from Dave as well.

Dave got about 6 inches off the floor on that block attempt.

So, KU inept passing continues.

Think they are in the “play fast” “don’t let the ball stick” phase of the year where self pushes them to make quick decisions and they haven’t caught up yet. Och has always been a bad passer but I think as team KU will figure it out in the next 3-4 games.

Bill Self "growth stunter" • Jan 05, 2022 06:33 PM

Ok. I’m going to throw this out there but I do think some people may be discounting JWs rebounding as a DEFENSIVE skill. Yes he may bet blown by or miss an assignment, but without him (and new Dave last night) we have struggled to END defensive possessions.

The rebounding WAS the difference last night. Getting this offense more possessions is a fairly simple recipe for success. And yes, to this point, this team has been successful as someone above pointed out the only loss coming on a last second miracle.

Can we break the curse tonight? • Jan 04, 2022 09:40 PM

@Kcmatt7 said in Can we break the curse tonight?:

The advantage we have is that Bill seems to save things for B12 play and crank it up. Hopefully he has saved a few easy buckets and set plays from getting on tape by not playing TCU and Colorado.

Could learn a lot about how the rest of the season goes from tonight's game

That set that got the lob from Harris to Mitch right down the middle was sick. And the more I’ve watched it I’m not even sure how to guard it better because Braun, Och, and JCL were spreading the floor and any help off one of those guys could have been 3 points instead of 2. Hoping to see more looks that utilize all 5 players as a threat. You know self has a few more tricks up his sleeve and the out of bounds plays haven’t even started kicking in I feel like.

Bet we see at least one lob to Och on a back door screen this game to punish the inevitable pressure OSU will bring.

Bryce Thompson & Okie St • Jan 04, 2022 03:01 AM

@drgnslayr the big 12 will all depend on how we do on the road. I think with fans back the phog keeps us in the hunt. Baylor certainly playing with the target on their backs this year though coach beard still thinks the road to the championship still goes through Lawrence, Ks.

If Braun and Och can have a March as good as their December we can definitely go on a run.

Also still feel like there will be a month or so where Remy averages 20 a night. Who knows when he will pop off but I believe it will happen if his knee truly doesn’t have lingering issues.

We all see the looming doom against a team like Baylor... maybe Texas.. and who knows... ISU? Without question... the team with the highest potential moving forward is Baylor. Not even close!

We all expect this team to hit another gear, but it hasn't happened yet, and now I think we all question if it will happen or not.

What is keeping this team from hitting another gear?

Is it Dave? Jalen? Remy? Everyone? Self?

I genuinely think if Jalen wasn't just a shell of himself that Bill would be going 5 guards 20+ mpg and running teams out of the gym with the best offense in the country. Jalen being back to .333+ from deep and not a total headcase changes the dynamic a lot.

Saw he’s something like 2-22 at 9% and worst in the country from three among players with at least 20 attempts.

Self thinks it the 5 spot. Assuming we get Remy back and he continues to play at his previous level or even improve I’d say self is right. Meaning the season comes down to Dave, jalen, and Mitch.

An argument could be made that some of the lackluster team performance is a result of Och coming back to earth a bit then Braun following suit. Still think KU is tough to beat no matter who is at the 5 when those two are clicking.

Bryce Thompson & Okie St • Jan 03, 2022 10:55 PM

@drgnslayr Crazy that this teams worst games are comfortable wins over lowly opponents and a last second miracle buzzer beater loss. But yeah I do think we are all seeing the writing on the wall for when the competition picks up and the games start to matter.

Just give this team a rim protector and they're good. Throw Jeff Withey on this team and they're automatically a massively improved defensive team.

They don't need any post scoring. There is plenty of fire power on the court. Just catch lobs and block shots.

Agree. Guards/wings are good enough to get to a FF. The post situation will see this team out in probably the first weekend, but best case the second.

Sucks that the WHOLE team has to be good in order to win. Seems like a tall order.

Unless Martin is a full go in practice today, I doubt he plays tomorrow.

I think this is the beginning of seeing more 5 out lineups for KU. Lightfoot is not going to play a ton of minutes and McCormack, as I have said often, just isn't an ideal fit with this team. I feel bad for him because he's a good player and a hard worker. But the team around him is just not the type of team that his game matches well with.

This KU team is just better when they go small, even though that goes against Self's general philosophy.

Some interesting thoughts in there...lemme ask a few follow up questions...

  1. What kind of player would be a good fit for this team, presumably at the 5 spot?

  2. Dave’s a good player? What makes you say that?

If I’m going back in time, Landen would be a very good fit on this team. Always in the right spot, good positional defender, good rebounder, doesn’t need touches.

Or if Senior Doke is available, you take Senior Doke

You obviously always take senior Doke!

But what about Jamari? Fast, tough, athletic…

Too far?

Mitch will start Tuesday per Self.

Definitely a shot to Dave to get his shit together

Wonder how everyone around here will handle the Mitch start? Had a big game but going to be hard to argue he’s one of the 5 best players on this team.

That 5 spot has become such a problem with Dave struggling and Wilson being awful not providing any pressure to play small at the 5.

I think it’s easy to say just play KJ but no one really knows what he will do in extended minutes. He brings energy and bounce but I’m afraid in big minutes he might get exposed. Saw hints of that when he absolutely disappeared on d with that spin move last game.

Wonder if Och will still do the tip with Mitch starting.

Going to be a really tough game to be without Remy. Seeing how this team played without him made me see how important he really is to this group. I think His biggest role is as the emotional leader of this team. He’s the fun. He’s the passion. Braun is second in that department but needs Remys flash to really shine.

Non-KU Games • Jan 02, 2022 01:19 AM

@wissox to me the mindset difference you are highlighting is which subset of people do you care about the most? You seem to favor the feelings and emotions of the fans. Those arguing against you are giving priority to the thoughts, feelings, and decisions of the players.

For me, you may very well be right that fans, commentators, donors, etc are upset by those young mens decisions. The players may have in fact just negatively impacted their future careers because there are undoubtedly people who think the same as you in positions of power in their futures.

BUT especially with football where every game has a negative impact on your future health, I’m going to in the end always fall on the side of the players. They are the ones risking their bodies, their futures, their careers with every decision they make on and off the field. If they are doing what they think is best than more power to them.

Braun making free throws is. Clutch.

How is this 2 shots?

Ditto. Yes seems really uncomfortable running the point.

Just feel like Harris is a pressure release for the other ball handler. Like a comfort blanket. Not going to take up too much space or control the hall but just move it around and help the flow.

I think I’d like to see yes and Harris play together if we are without Remy another game.

Braun can’t make anything today. Just one of those days. Feels like he’s taking good shots.

The d has actually been there. Just haven’t scored in a stretch here.

Mitch really playing good d against an admittedly in athletic big.

It's clear why Yesufu sits on the bench

Bill alluded to him basically being in his own head. Trying to hard to do what he is supposed instead of just freely playing.

Unfortunate to watch because when he is on and has confidence he can put on a pretty good show

In his defense, I feel like it's hard to free play on a Bill Self coached team.

Definitely a tough spot to be in.

Gotta do ALL the stuff you are supposed to do as a bench player, THEN you can play free. Otherwise he just puts the starter back in. Definitely a tough spot.

Reaaaally hate that Bobby got hurt. He is at least a good passer/driver.

Maybe this let’s Bobby skip all the scouting and gives him a chance to have a big run at the end of the year.

JCL is definitely an upgrade from Tristan. At least for this team.

Yes has wheels.

Great d from Mitch there.

Even when we do throw a good entry pass, he doesn't score. Our offense can't be built around that.

It's not built around Dave posting up though.

Okie doke

Dave is averaging less than 10 ppg and less than 7 field goal attempts per game, but you keep claiming the offense is built on Dave posting people up.

Our offense is built on passing it to the low post. Trying to get ball reversal and then throw the ball inside. Because our entry passing sucks an because Dave can't make a dunk doesn't mean that's not our strategy.

Again, Dave is averaging less than 7 field goal attempts per game, and since he's not a guy that passes much, that means he's posting up and getting fed at the rate you think he is.

Because he often loses the ball before he gets a shot up. Because he only plays 19 minutes a game. Our offense is still a high-low offense where we try to feed the post. What have we been trying to do all game?

That's misleading, because he simply fumbles the ball or gets stripped repeatedly. Plus, scorekeepers seem to miss several of his 2 or 3 in a row misses from 2 ft. He's "officially" 0-3 this game, but he missed that many in a 1 minute stretch...

Is it really a shot attempt of a guy is just randomly flailing and the ball happens to go toward the basket?

Bill knows basketball.

What a play.

When Dave is in the game you can’t argue that a majority of the effort of the offense is trying to find a way to get him the ball inside. Yeah it’s not working at a high rate but it’s like the first 20 seconds of every possession. Then a guard has to make a play late in the shot clock. He’s also not playing big minutes leading to those low nimbuses. But when he’s in he is the focus.

And I haven’t even been the biggest Remy fan…

Missing Remy bringing the energy and fun.

First time I’ve seen Och forcing it this season.

Nice mitch

@jessejayhawk he did get 8 pretty smooth points in the first half. But those are I feel like SELF points. Just a guy being tall and doing the right stuff down low as the ball moves for an easy bucket.

We should be up by 15-20 by now.
