Why can’t Dave catch the ball?

@KirkIsMyHinrich communication on switches has looked rough this game. Saw a couple Braun/yes miscues that led to points. Probably why we need more bench minutes on the regular.

Chucking the threes this game. Hopefully the percentage improves just a bit in the second half.

Dave's line is 0 shots taken, 1 rb 1 TO. Might as well stayed home and played xbox. Dave only gives effort in 1 out of 3 games.

Is argue the effort is always there but the execution is the problem. The ball bounces out of his hands so easily it’s bizarre.

I remember him going down hard in the last game after banging knees with someone. Wonder if it’s from that.

Got my results today and as expected I am also positive. Actually feeling better today than I have the last couple so hopefully I’m on the back end of it.

@Crimsonorblue22 doing alright. Definitely tired, still have a runny nose and lots of coughing and sneezing. Being vaccinated and boosted is hopefully helping.

We are all quarantining here too. My partner got a positive COVID test two days ago and while my at home COVID test came back negative I’m pretty sure I have it too. Nothing too serious thankfully but still feel pretty crappy. Waving at family on the porch will be our Christmas this year…

Post Tournament Thoughts • Nov 30, 2021 09:21 PM

I think the biggest positive for this year is that even in the games where Och seems to not be FULLY engaged, he's providing scoring when the opportunities present themselves. Plus when he is turned all the way up, he can go for 30 and completely dominate a game.

Unfortunately, scoring isn't what this team needs most. We all of the sudden have an abundance of scorers. Braun and Remy can get 20+ if given the looks. And despite what we've seen of Dave so far, if he gets it together he's shown in the past the ability to go for 15+ from time to time.

We've scored over 70 in EVERY game. Traditionally, if a Self team can win the race to 70 the defense has been strong enough to get the win. I still believe this team can get there and be DANGEROUS come March.

Post Tournament Thoughts • Nov 29, 2021 04:01 PM

@BeddieKU23 The rebounding problems are contributing to the defensive problems. A lot of the easy looks in the iona game came off offensive rebounds. It's a delicate balance when you try to play fast and push in transition. We have guards leaking out instead of crashing the boards. Not sure if that's by design or guys trying to "play fast" without really knowing what Self means by that. We have a few guys that are just watching when the ball goes up and then reacting once it's rebounded by someone else. This is one area where hopefully Self is giving Remy some praise to go along with all the criticism he is surely sending his way. Remy boxes out pretty well for a guard and is always hunting the ball once it goes up.

Pastries for Thought • Nov 29, 2021 03:45 PM

I thought Yesufu brought really good energy in the second half and also in his limited minutes v dayton. If Harris isn't providing A+ defense in a game his minutes need to drop. Love the guy but he hasn't developed into a playmaker yet mostly because of his hesitance to score. Harris is also hurt by the lack of defensive effort of his teammates. He can provide ALL the pressure in the world but if he doesn't have help and good rotation from the other guys on the floor, that pressure can turn into easy buckets.

@approxinfinity said in Iona Game Thread:

I think Mitch can do all the things we expect from Dave. Rim runner that rebounds, plays positional defense and doesn’t cough up the ball or play plodding back to the basket offense, passes willingly.

Was late watching the game but this comment stood out to me looking through the game thread. To me, Mitch scores the points that Bill draws up. He is in the right spots, makes the right cuts, and finishes when the play call gives him the free look at the basket. Like the box score might as well give all those points to Bill. And I think that makes Bill happy. He's not going to do a lot of scoring outside of those sets. I think he had one bucket where he actually made a move and then scored. But he also doesn't TRY to make a move and score every time. I mean, dude got to double digits in back up minutes just by knowing the system. I wish others would see that and learn from it. Bill can make the game so easy for big guys but some of them seem to make it so hard.

Could definitely hear Self early in the second half say "get him out of there" after watching Dave fail to grab 3-4 rebounds in a row that went right to him. Hard to say what to do about that. Hard to say how to help a guy make easy layups when the set lays them out on a platter. Hard to say what to do about Dave in general. He showed at the end of the year last year he can be an impact player. But hard to say how long you give him to get back to that level this year.

Dave showed he can make big shots down the stretch in close games last year. He just started out sucking this year and he needs to get his head right. If he can’t do that without the ball always going through him then I don’t want to ride the struggle bus to get there, nor do the other 9 rotation guys.

Dave should NEVER be the guy we play through with a minute left. You have two players in Ochai and Remi too good to play through Dave.

Jesse Newell can talk about Remy hero ball, but literally all Frank did down the stretch was hero ball. Same with Graham. It’s what you do with PGs who can score the ball the way Remy does.

I do think Jesse hinted at the real issue which is Bill doesn’t trust Remy. Their relationship HAS to evolve (from both of them) for this season to go the way we all want it to.

Remy still gets pulled for defensive mistakes and Jalen no D Wilson comes in for him on the last defensive possession. When Remy gets pulled you can see it kills him. He does not hide his disgust. He plays hard and wants to win but his game and selfs game are not the same. Hopefully this game does something to bring them together. They both gotta give.

From what we’ve seen if Remy so far vs how he was at ASU the ego is from one side of this equation… Remy has for the most part been a patient and willing passer/teammate and decent enough defender . Some has to check their ego at the door and it isn’t the 23 year old.

I do think they are both trying but like Self said, they just don’t see things the same way yet. I think they’ll get there. I hope Dave does too. He was big time for a while there at the end of last year. Disappointing that that’s not what we’ve seen to start the year but if I had to pick I’d rather he come on late than early and drop off.

Dayton Game Thread • Nov 27, 2021 04:30 AM

@approxinfinity Do you think Dave getting going or Remy and Self figuring their crap out is more important to late season success?

To me it’s Remy/Self. This team has shown flashes of greatness already and those flashes have all involved Remy.

We got the ball to Dave in the exact situation Self wanted several times this game and he blew it every time. Just can’t imagine being in that situation with a must score possession and having watched the last few games and saying yep, let’s dump one into Dave. He will get the angle and score it!

Like where does that idea come from?

@Texas-Hawk-10 Och is the option. If he’s gonna be the man he’s gotta be the man. He’s my pick.

Not today he shouldn't have been. Braun should've been the choice today.

Fully disagree. Och is getting the press for a player of the year type season. He’s the senior. He came back to be the go to guy. He’s scoring 20+ a game. He’s the most athletic and best shooter we’ve got. He’s shown more creating his own shot this season. He can catch and shoot coming off a screen. Pump fake and drive it, pull up for a mid-range shot.

Braun had a great game. But his points were mostly effort points and being in the right place at the right time in the flow of the offense. He wasn’t creating for himself or others. He wasn’t hot from deep. He doesn’t really have scoring threats outside of open threes and layups/dunks. I don’t know that we’ve EVER seen him in an ISO situation to know what he would even do there.

Dayton Game Thread • Nov 27, 2021 04:07 AM

@approxinfinity To be clear I agree the game should have never been that close. And the first fifteen minutes of the first half (and really the last 5-10 of the first) are much more significant. But many games are going to come down to crunch time and if Dave is the go to guy at the end of the game I’m just not sure what we are even doing.

Jesse Newell has a piece about why the last play went the way it did. He argues it ended up with Dave in a bad spot because of Remy. Which seems accurate but the call was still to go to Dave which to me is a dang coaching mistake.

It will. That was a designed play to get Dave a look at the hoop, everyone knows he doesn't pass. That's after the game he's had while Och Remy and CB had provided all the offense. It's bad coaching on that play. Regardless of the bad call it was designed to get him the ball because at no point in the game had we pinned Dave in the lane to go get a bucket

If KU actually shown any effort the second half, it doesn't come down to the final possession. That's why this game is on the players and not Self. Bill Self was not the one on the floor saying fuck it foe 15 minutes and not giving any effort.

Agree with this. Hopefully they are engaged for all 40 minutes on Sunday.

Bill ducked around in the first half with the Harris/Bobby/JCL/Wilson/Mitch lineup too though. Could have put them away earlier… had every opportunity to be up 15 at half

Do think this is a valid point. Seems like he sometimes intentionally will break a teams momentum in the first half so as NOT to get a huge lead. That lineup definitely took the foot off the gas after an explosive start to the game with a lineup that included both Harris and Dave.
