I want to cry! • Mar 01, 2014 11:47 PM

You all will have to listen to me explain why I think our 2014-15 team will be better than this year's version, even if Embiid and Selden join Wiggins turning pro.

@HighEliteMajor I am very much looking forward to listen to this... all in good time!

Just returning to the original topic of this post -- anyone notice what Virginia is doing right now? A team executing like that but under the radar a bit is dangerous.

More Jaquan Lyle Fodder • Feb 27, 2014 06:14 AM

If Lyle came, his role could be similar to Sherron's role in '08. Tharpe would fill the role that Russ Rob played -- That is, Russ was a starter, but as the year proceeded, Sherron found more PT and ultimately was in the game at important points in the game.

I can't quote T.S. Eliot, but here's my wheelhouse:

"Duke is an ugly word in Kentucky. Nothing in the world compares to the joy of beating those hateful swine from Duke."

and one more for good measure:

"March is a month without mercy for rabid basketball fans. There is no such thing as a 'gentleman gambler' when the Big Dance rolls around. All sheep will be fleeced, all fools will be punished severely... There are no Rules when the deal goes down in the final weeks of March. Even your good friends will turn into monsters."

Welcome to the turning point. • Feb 22, 2014 09:12 AM

Today marks the turning point for this team. But not its destiny.

One path leads to an almost certain 10th B12 championship in 10 years and an opportunity to spring into the post-season with a decade of momentum and confidence on our backs.

On the other path lies a challenge, with confidence rattled. Uncharted territory for a team that is used to handling business at home. A contender on our tail waiting for a slip. And possibly, stumbling into the post-season.

We'll learn more about this team from today's game than any other game so far this season.

It won't determine the outcome of the season, but it sets the stage for the final act.

Mizzery Analysis by H.E.M. • Feb 21, 2014 06:39 AM

@vailhawk I had to give you a 'favorite' click for bringing this out of the archive, even though @highelitemajor deserves it just as much!

@Crimsonorblue22 Agreed.. And I'm good with more floor burns ;-)

By the way-- for those with ESPN3, you can watch the replay of the game ↗ to see the first possession of the game that @drgnslayr mentioned. That's an example of what I was talking about on #3. And there are several other times in the game when we wait for the opponent to set and don't attempt to capitalize when we seem to have an advantage.

This is one of the best threads all season. Great writing, great points..

And now I'm jonesing after the 'basketball heroin' served by viewing Kevin Love's outlet passes.

I'll add a few things that I think we have been missing lately (mostly covered by others already):

1) Passing that breaks the defense down. The kind of passing I'm talking about takes chemistry-- the team must play as a unit. Yes we pass, but lately, we don't often make the kind of passes that create assists. We had 4 assists against Tech. Four! the whole team, the whole game. Outlet passes would be nice too. The video proves that -- once upon a time -- Embiid looked up the floor to see a teammate streaking to the basket.

We've had some great passing teams in the past and I guess I'm spoiled.

2) Which brings me to fast breaks. Which just don't seem to be in this team's vocabulary.

3) A love of opportunistic moments. This is sometimes known as a "killer instinct". This team doesn't seem to look for it. They make great plays and they beat the pants off a few teams like TCU. But to see the definition of opportunistic, see 2011-12 Jayhawks. Also see Butler under Brad Stevens and the legions of mid-majors who make up for the lesser talent by 1) not making mistakes, 2) playing hard and scrappy, and 3) seeking out the moment of weakness of the opponent and exploiting it.

I would like some more of #3 to go with all the talent!

When those two things come together, we'll be hanging another banner in AFH.

Newell: Andrew Wiggins' last-second shot saves KU in 64-63 victory over Texas Tech ↗

Andrew Wiggins, never known to be an emotional player, was grinning as wide as he could as teammates mobbed him following Tuesday’s 64-63 victory over Texas Tech at United Spirit Arena.

Just a few seconds earlier, Wiggins had grabbed the ball after Joel Embiid lost control of it in the post, scooping it up to put in a short jumper with 1.7 seconds left and give KU a one-point lead.

Dodd: Wiggins’ basket in final seconds gives Kansas a 64-63 win at Texas Tech ↗

LUBBOCK, Texas — First, there was a sly smile. Then raised eyebrows, then full-out laughter, like Andrew Wiggins could not believe what he was doing.

It was nearly 20 minutes after No. 8 Kansas’ 64-63 victory over Texas Tech on Tuesday night. It was after Wiggins has scooped up a loose ball and finished the first game-winning shot of his career, after Texas Tech had missed a desperation half-court shot at the buzzer, and after freshman Wayne Selden Jr. had swallowed up Wiggins in a vice-grip bear hug inside a stunned United Spirit Arena.

Bedore: Andrew Wiggins’ first game-winner lifts Jayhawks ↗

Kansas University freshman phenom Andrew Wiggins — who has already accomplished superhuman feats in basketball, evidenced by all of his driving and dunking highlights shown on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” this year and last — added a first to his hoops résumé on Tuesday.

“It’s my first game-winner ever. It’s a great feeling, something I’ve dreamed about for a long time,” said the soon-to-turn-19-year-old Wiggins, who sank a one-footer with 1.7 seconds left, providing the margin of victory in KU’s 64-63 victory over Texas Tech before 12,667 fans in United Spirit Arena.

Oklahoma State's loss is KU's....loss • Feb 19, 2014 04:39 AM

Lotta butta-- y.e.s. But consider this, Roy Williams just got his 300th win at UNC this week and Bill Self got his 320th win at KU tonight.

Roy Williams was on track to be a HOF coach before he jumped even w/o a NC.

Bill Self is on track to be a HOF coach in less time. If you look at the numbers, he's the best of the 9 coaches (all time) at KU. If you look at the recruits, he's the best coach. If you look at his ability to graduate and to run a clean program, its as good as any.

Maybe he isn't as innovative as Phog and maybe Larry did something more magical and maybe Roy cemented the Silver Age of basketball at KU, but Bill Self has defined success in a new way.

I think he's deserving of something with his name attached.

Oh so true. Tharpe made me want to eviscerate myself in the final 2 min. Ellis was as absent from this game as he was present from the TCU game.

Let's also give Tubby a little credit. He does know how to coach and got a lot out of a club that is not nearly as talented.

I know it looked like we didn't deserve to win this, but that team was playing over its ceiling and the officials were oscillating between this universe and some other universe where blocks and player control fouls are reversed.

On Brandon and Bill • Feb 19, 2014 12:31 AM

Rush was a greater player than Simien, because he was the hub player of a national champion.

@jaybate 1.0 I'd like you to expound on this logic a bit. On the surface, I'm not sure I agree. I loved Brandon Rush -- he was a key player on a team that made an amazing run -- but that doesn't justify his jersey unless we change the rules substantially.

I'd like to know what rule could be devised to allow his jersey without adding at least a half dozen others at the same time.

Personally, I like the select number of jerseys hanging in the rarified air of AFH. Adding more jerseys too quickly dilutes the remarkable feat that each jersey represents.

OAD or the sleeping Giant. • Feb 16, 2014 08:02 AM

I like to think that Perry Ellis is the most valuable player, but Naadir Tharpe is most important.

Maybe it's just semantics, but I see those as slightly different. I agree Ellis is consistent and that's the key to his value.

Meanwhile, we can continue our superlatives thusly:

  • Andrew Wiggins: most athletic
  • Joel Embiid: most naturally gifted
  • Wayne Selden: most diverse
  • Frank Mason: quickest
  • Jamari Traylor: most inspirational

Short-sighted 'leadership'.

As good as the basketball is in Kansas, the political leadership is bad.

Unfortunately, my statement is not just limited to the decision about funding a housing project for the flagship state university...

JIE: Warning--WVU Dangerous • Feb 08, 2014 07:10 PM

Glad I'm not alone in my apprehension of WV. While I think we have the advantage for this meeting -- playing at home -- I am particularly worried about the game in Morgantown, which is the last game of the season.

Can he score 40? Yes.

Will he score 40? Probably not.

He's not asked to score 40. Kobe is. McDermott is.

Wiggins' role on the team is different. Self likes teams with balanced scoring-- where there's a threat from every position. And why not? That was the formula for success in 2008.

I think we will see him score 30 but probably not 40 unless it's a game with an overtime or two.

I think Andrew views success as positive numbers in as many categories as possible and no turnovers. His line from Baylor shows his focus on the whole game:

  • 14 points on 4-13 shooting
  • 2 blocks
  • 0 turnovers
  • 3 steals
  • 1 foul
  • 5 assists
  • 7 rebounds

His shooting will improve, but his focus and impact is on all aspects of the game.

February 5: News Headlines Digest • Feb 07, 2014 04:49 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 LOL seriously?? That is twisted desperation.

We win at Baylor • Feb 05, 2014 05:33 AM

We can win when Wiggins has 3 points.. We can win when Embiid has 2 points.. We can win when Selden and Tharpe and even Ellis have off nights.

And on any given night -- any of them could score 20 points or more.

None of the starters have reached their ceiling; the team keeps getting better and better!

And our bench depth is fantastic. Probably the best in the country.

These are characteristics of a team that goes deep in the tourney.

February 2: News Headlines Digest • Feb 02, 2014 09:40 PM

I couldn't believe how many times we drove toward the basket with heavy contact, but nothing was called.

@Wishawk Agree. I'm a bit baffled by what the officials are doing this season. First any contact earns a whistle anywhere on the court..

These days, they still call touch fouls on the perimeter by guards.. but if you're in the lane and going to the basket, it's open season. They swallow the whistle... I'm not just talking about our game. Note the no-call contact on the dunk attempt at the end of the Duke - Syracuse game.

@DinarHawk & @Lulufulu85 Agree that there's a deja vu about this team. I find my heart glowing with pride about the players and the collective team the way I felt about the '97 team.

I'm hoping this is the year the Basketball Gods fix the whole in my heart that remains from that loss to Arizona.

OUR DAILY THREADS FOR January 27:

It's #1 Seed Or Bust: The Path To The Title - @HighEliteMajor

Kansas now seems back in the mix for a #1 seed. Seemed improbable three plus weeks ago. But here we are. Back in the discussion. This fact may be the most important development in our pursuit of a national title.

However, with four losses and a challenging conference road ahead, a #1 seed seems unlikely, doesn’t it? Right now, there are two undefeated teams that look like locks for a #1 seed: Arizona and Syracuse. Then there’s Wichita St., who might run the table; and a host of others -- San Diego St., Kentucky, Florida, Michigan St., or Michigan -- for that last spot. Lots of competition with two that have beaten us head to head.

1-1-1-2/Say What! Or Out of the Cradle Endlessly Masking - @jaybate

Though it flew under radar, as in almost no one seemed to comment, Self deployed that rarest of rare zone presses, yes, a 3/4 court 1-1-1-2.

SAY WHAT?!

Yep the one and only time I saw it was against Arizona State a few years back, when that little known Okie Baller was interim head coach and was assisted by some connoisseur of weird defenses. Both names I now forget. They ran the 1-1-1-2 and it gave KU some problems beyond simple surprise and recognition. Why?

** Jan 25: THINGS TO DO IN FORT WORTH BEFORE THE TCU BEAT DOWN - @jaybate**

~Try to visit all 1,000 natural gas wells tapping the Barnett Shale formation under Fort Worth. Each well site is a bare patch of gravel 2-5 acres in size. City ordinances permit them in all zoning categories. Some wells are secured by masonry fences, but most are secured by chain link.

~Skip the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and go straight to the adjacent National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. Women already in the hall of fame include Georgia O'Keefe, Sacagawea, Annie Oakley, Dale Evans, Enid Justin, Temple Grandin, and Sandra Day O'Connor. As you view the honor to Sandra Day O'Connor recall It was reputedly at the 1985 National Press Club's Salute to Congress at 529 14th Street NW in Washington D.C. that Riggins drunkenly told Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to "loosen up Sandy baby" because she was "too tight" when the two reputedly met at dinner.[29] Riggins then reputedly fell asleep under the table.[30] The incident created a national stir.[citation needed] The next time Ms O'Connor and John Riggins reputedly met at a function years later, she reputedly gave Riggo a dozen roses.[31] {The above was found at John Riggins wiki page.}

** Jan 25: tough losses by coach @lighthawk **

Thinking of the TCU game last year as a heavy surprise it wasn't a tough loss, rather it made a point and chance for coach to bring lofty team to reality, get ready for the rest of season and March in March.

Tough loss by coach: Ted Owens, Wichita State and Texas Western. Larry Brown, Oklahoma AFH & Duke Final Four Dallas Roy Williams, Arizona Elite Eight & Syracuse Bill Self, maybe it was Bill's 5th loss against Missouri, oops my bad, played MU 19 times and only lost 4 of them, sweet!

Why do Bill Self teams turn the ball over at a high rate?

Jan 23: Picking the Elite 8 - @lulufulu85

I want to add a thread for today. Would anyone care to venture a very premature guess at this years elite 8 teams? I say that because IMO the field is still too wide open to pick just 4 teams out of the 20 or so teams that could possibly make it to the Final 4. But, there are some really good teams out there that have started to separate themselves from the pack. Back in November during the time KU played in the Champions classic with Dookie, Michigan St and Kenstinky, I made a guess that that line up could be the '14 Final Four. shakes head Nope, not gonna happen. And without further ado, but a lot of rambling because I work the night shift and I have been up since 6pm yesterday, I will start with my 8 teams whom I think at this point in the season will make it to Elite status.

Jan 23: McDermott VS Embiid VS Wiggins - @drgnslayr

John Gasaway, over at ESPN, wrote an op ed called "Top 25 Players in College Hoops", where he ranked current players based on his own value system for how they impacted the college game instead of how NBA scouts rank players for draft status, based on their potential at the next level.

Gasaway concluded that the top player in college basketball is Doug McDermott. Joel Embiid finished 9th and Andrew Wiggins finished 21st.

I was unable to finish reading his story because I don't find enough value in the ESPN media to warrant paying to read their opinions. But... I'll go ahead and post my own ideas around this story and the rankings that came from it

Picking the Elite 8 • Jan 25, 2014 01:28 AM

So much depends on the seeding and match ups.... but screw it, Let's Play.

Of course, I expect (1) KU to be there.

I like to see the other Kansas schools doing well, so I'll pencil in the (2) Shockers, even though I have a suspicion they will fall short.

Getting away from sentimentals-- I think two teams have the potential to surprise: (3)Ohio State and (4)North Carolina. These teams have been inconsistent, but have talent, quality coaches and tradition. Craft is not to be underestimated. I will say that until they are bumped from the tournament, which I do not expect to come easily or early.

Now here are four teams that are obviously solid and not too controversial to pick: (5) Michigan State, (6) Syracuse, (7) Florida, (8) Arizona.

Some of these teams won't have the chance to make it to the elite 8 because they will face off in an earlier round. So, playing probability, I would guess that there's another Big 12 team and another mid-major.

OSU? ISU? Texas? Who knows. I'd put more money on ISU.

As for the mid-major, San Diego State is a popular pick.. But it wouldn't shock me to see McDermott put the team on his back and push for the Regional Final (Davidson 2008 anyone?).

And what of Kentucky? Could they? Would they? I suppose if you follow the logic that KU will make it, you can't deny Kentucky's chances.

That's more than 8, but hey, it's all hypothetical.

OUR DAILY THREADS (JAN 22):

Why Self Said FTs Probably Won the BU Game and Some Implications - @jaybate

Self said FTs probably decided the game. Why?

First, KU achieved its apparent defensive objectives. It took away the rim game by guarding hard inside the arc and fouling shots taken there, especially off offensive rebounds, while at the same time giving short jumpers to a team that did not shoot those short jumpers very well. Essentially, KU took away one of BU's two strengths--inside scoring.

BU's other strength, trey shooting first went red hot the first half, then cold the second half to shoot back to its usual still decent trey average by end of the game.

“I think he’s done well,” Self said. “I think that there’s another step he could take. He leaves me wanting more, so when people say certain things, I can’t be upset they’re saying them because he leaves me wanting more too.”

Newell: Against Baylor, KU basketball wins statistic we rarely talk about ↗

Baylor hit 13 of 27 threes and grabbed 48 percent of its missed shots. That's a recipe for a huge offensive game and also a potential upset at Allen Fieldhouse.

And yet, it wasn't. So how did KU still manage to win comfortably after allowing those totals? The biggest reason was the percentage we hardly talk about: 2-point percentage.

Selden’s toughness on save ‘contagious’ ↗

Like thousands of Kansas University basketball fans, coach Bill Self has reviewed the clip of Wayne Selden’s all-out hustle play against Baylor several times.

Naadir Tharpe, Joel Embiid pick up more awards ↗

Kansas University point guard Naadir Tharpe on Tuesday received Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week honors from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association for his stellar play for the Jayhawks in victories over Iowa State and Oklahoma State.

Joining Tharpe in being honored by the USBWA on Tuesday was KU freshman Joel Embiid, who received the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week honor.

OUR DAILY THREADS (JAN 21):

Its the Free Throws, Stupid! - @Jaybate

"The KU-BU game produced a bunch of fascinating stats, and both coaches did some remarkable things, but the 10 point game was won and lost on the FT line. To wit:

KU 26-29 89.7% BU 9-20 45%

KU's free throw defense was awesome as usual.

But KU's free throw offense was anomalously great..."

FLOOR BURN AWARD: KU vs BU - Jan 20 - @drgnslayr

I think we can make this FLOOR BURN AWARD short and sweet:

Wayne Selden

In case anyone on the planet hasn't seen Wayne's sudden desire to leave the Baylor game and join the third row to steal some popcorn...

Andrew's New Mentor; Kobe Bryant - @drgnslayr

I caught the following post today and want to offer up some new ideas:

@Blown - "Wiggins is just a Gorillas Grip on the ball away from finishing those drives. Here to hoping Hudy has a hand strengthener in her fantastic arsenal"

I think Andrew needs to reexamine his game. I'd like to sit in a video room with him and go over file footage of Kobe Bryant's NBA career. This is the player that Andrew needs to model his game after.
