BMac is a special man. All our Jayhawks are... but BMac has taken his early struggles in life and put a huge smile on his face now while carrying a monster heart for humanity. He truly is special in his own way!

@jaybate-1.0

I think Self has it right. 5 losses. And if it is us, it could be we lose one more at OSU, after we already have the Big 12 locked up.

I hope not. I hope Self is wrong and the winner only has 4 losses!

Breaking Wooden β€’ Feb 22, 2018 02:24 PM

Both the streak and national championships mean a lot to me. But right at this moment, when we can separate ourselves from the Dukes in the world... I want that streak to be owned strictly by Kansas. We are seeing just how much publicity it is giving us... plenty... and I feel MORE than if we traded 14 league titles for a single NC.

Just my opinion. Doesn't make it right or wrong. Just how I feel about it.

I want BOTH this year! Why do we have to settle for one or the other?

More than anything... I want Kansas to win every single game we play in. I hate losing!

@Blown

I am honest when I say I don't know if I can really be unbiased. I know I don't want Kansas to get a free ride anywhere. That has always been what I hate about Duke. I don't want Kansas to be the next Duke. But that doesn't mean I can look at a game with Kansas and think my calls are the right calls.

I know I find some wrong calls where we get the break and see it as wrong. When Svi took 3 1/2 steps to clinch our home win against KSU last year, I even built a graphic of Svi Airlines to point it out.

Still... I will never claim to be the right person to judge Kansas treatment overall. I often feel we get ripped off. I think that is typical fan behavior... making me typical.

Trae...Deuce...Un Young: KU 107, OU 74 β€’ Feb 22, 2018 01:21 AM

@mayjay

I'm just guessing... because, as I said, in the end, after he's gone to the league, we will have a better idea of second-guessing.

Not sure what that says about Trae's flexibility if he has to have his way. He'll be just a squirt in the NBA and will be taking orders from everyone, including his agent. Over time he will be able to earn more leverage but it all starts by being a newbie and proving himself in the league.

16 minutes left and OSU is up by 12!

Welcome to the top of the Big 12, TTech! You get everyone's best shot!

HighEliteMajor said:

That said, I strongly believe that the last 8 minutes went substantially in our favor -- like really substantially. We were down 10 and that swing helped create our comeback. Thanks refs. Next time we'll be the victims.

I need to go back and just watch those last 8 minutes before forming my own judgment of those 8 minutes.

But... even if we all agree that Kansas received a benefit... is that benefit because we are Kansas and it is AFH? Or, is it more of a common factor that typically gives all home teams that same advantage?

Refs are humans. How can they not be impacted by a home crowd... especially when their home team has a come-back momentum thing going on? And AFH is the loudest (or one of the loudest) venues in college basketball.

Do you think we get ref benefits just because we are Kansas?

I think Huggy played a card in hopes of gaining a benefit next year, or even in the Big 12 Tournament. He may even be playing that card for years... Huggy is a real competitor. He is TIRED of losing to Kansas. He is TIRED of losing the league. Simply... he'll do whatever it takes to dethrone us.

Think about this... if Huggy would have stayed polite in this game, no one would be talking about that discrepancy now. It would have appeared within a sports media bleep, and would now be long gone!

Trae...Deuce...Un Young: KU 107, OU 74 β€’ Feb 21, 2018 11:47 PM

@CRH107 @mayjay @benshawks08

This is just my opinion... and I think we will only know what was right after a year or two from now, depending on how Trae's future goes.

At this moment, I'm leaning NO and MAYBE.

Right now... I see a Trae that is well-equipped for college basketball, but very unprepared for the NBA. I look at a talent like Trae and can really only think about what would do him best at the next level. It is clear to me that Trae probably took the right path for just getting to the league the fastest. His draft stock may be higher because his stat line and global attention have been huge because of going to OU, where he could just do whatever he wants with their offense, including pumping up as many shots as he can. I doubt he would have put up anywhere near those numbers in a Jayhawk uniform. We have too many scoring options to just dump it on one guy, especially a freshman. I just don't see Trae as ready for the league. He needs at least another year in college. He still has the body of a boy. OU is not famous for strength and conditioning in basketball. Kansas is. And Trae would have put up lessor numbers as a freshman at Kansas. He would have to learn how to operate within a system and be a lot more "team oriented." So... perhaps... Trae's draft stock may have been less and he may have received quality advice to stay in school at least one more year. Imagine Trae's body after 2 years of Hudy! The kid needs physical development. If he thinks he is banged up now, just wait until he plays 100+ games a year where the battles are about players' livings. "No Boys Allowed!"

I have MAYBE on the second question. It could have gone so well to have Trae working with Devonte... back to a 2 PG offense. And Trae wouldn't have had all that pressure to run everything himself in year 1. And just look at Trae's supporting cast! Wow! Let's face it... college basketball hasn't seen a passer like Trae in a long, long time! But then there is the risk that he conflicts too much with Self and his philosophy. He was just a freshman coming in... and our other players would most-likely stick behind Self and his ways. MAYBE!

@KUSTEVE

So much of stats can be manipulated to see anything someone wants to see.

My question on the home court advantage stat... was that calculated against the same teams' road record? If so... Kansas can't be at the top because they play well on the road (in comparison to other teams, like ISU).

I don't always see eye-to-eye with Bilas. But his words on the WVU were right on.

We are fortunate to live in a world with DVRs. No more recounting the events of a game with no method of going back to check.

Trae...Deuce...Un Young: KU 107, OU 74 β€’ Feb 21, 2018 08:19 PM

I still ponder; Was it better for Trae to go to OU over KU?

I also ponder; Was it better for Kansas for Trae to go to OU over KU?

I'm curious what everyone in here thinks about that...

@jaybate-1.0

I always appreciate and respect your opinion. I will continue to keep an open mind about that game. I just haven't seen anything fishy by watching the game several times.

I know I can't be unbiased... but I try and I often see things different than most Kansas fans.

I saw several situations where we didn't get the calls in that game. I totally agree the numbers were weird. Sometimes there just isn't an answer to a game's results.

@jaybate-1.0

I've watched the game 3 times now. I just haven't seen it where we received the help from refs. WVU relied on the long ball and didn't push it to the rim enough. And when they did, Doke did a good job of not fouling. They shot 26 treys.

In the OU game, OU shot 13 FTs... 2 more than us. Why wasn't that game rigged?

All of this says more about our current culture than the reality at hand. I agree the WVU was an anomaly... but to just point at something and call it "rigged" when there simply isn't any supporting evidence says more about all of us than the refs that called the game.

The politics we live in today is having an impact on the way we see things, the way we interpret things, the way we communicate things. Just wait until March. This year may easily see fans screaming more about "rigged games" than all years prior.

We can expect to hear some of the same verbiage as used in politics... "fake refs" etc etc etc.

I'm making this point because I noticed our political climate has impacted my own thoughts and how I express them.

Devonte was right. The discrepancy should have been even further apart because WVU got away with murder.

Half of their players were holding our guys with both hands... even wrapping them up. The refs were giving warnings instead of blowing the whistle.

Huggy Bear had a strategy to play physical. He knew his biggest chance of winning was to win by playing more physical. When it didn't work, he played another card... to get thrown out to plant a seed for next year.

I'll tell you... Huggy doesn't miss a thing. He belongs in the HOF and he'll get there. He's one big March run away from knocking down the door to get in.

I just don't see this next round being about Adidas teams. If it is really so devastating to college basketball, covering half the top 16, then it must be (largely) about Nike schools.

@nuleafjhawk

Don't be concerned.

While all the other teams in our league would like to see us lose the conference... none want to do it by handing it over to TTech. They'd all like to do it while making themselves conference champs.

Heck... maybe I am thinking this wrong. Maybe the other teams who know they won't be winning the championship PREFER Kansas to win it!

Think about it... our entire league gets a ton of publicity from this Kansas streak.

What does it do to their recruiting results? I don't know... we recruited Trae Young heavily and he still chose OU.

I'm pretty sure the upcoming NBA draft will not feature a Jayhawk first representing the Big 12. Hmmmm.... Young... Bamba... maybe Konate?

If it truly is turf toe he can make it a lot worse by playing on it. Not sure if we are talking permanent damage as much as just "spraining the sprain" and increasing inflammation. The pain threshold continues to climb.

I'm guessing Beard will sideline him from all practices and just have him suited up for OSU with hopes of not having to use him.

Pretty good chance he is done for the year. He probably won't know until he puts it to the test in full-speed play.

KU/OU Recap β€’ Feb 20, 2018 03:58 PM

What impressed me was we finally saw a killer instinct!

We need to see more of these smack downs! We know we have the ability to win close games. But we didn't know if we had the ability to put our shoes on another team's throat and take them out!

This year has been a different kind of year than we are used to. Maybe we needed it to go this way. In most years, we peak earlier. It feels like we are peaking at the right time this year!

There are ZERO REASONS why this team should lose again this year! We should be hungry now and we have the depth it takes to win it all. We have plenty of offense available from most of our guys, so we don't have all our eggs in one basket (like OU has).

Devonte has finally become the player I always knew he could be! I am outrageously pleased with him taking ownership of this team. BTW.... Devonte hasn't even peaked yet! He continues to improve as the season goes on! And look at his supporting cast... ALL of our guys are finding more improvements.

This team still has a heck of a lot of upside left! Self has played this right by controlling energy spent outside of games to save our guys' legs. Even though Devonte (and others) have played so many game minutes... they still remain fresh enough to go a hard 40 minutes in games.

I can't ever recall a Self team preparing so well for March! He's done exactly what you expect from a HOF'r... he was dealt a tough hand this year and he turned it into a positive!

Yeah... I smell a run!

Keenan Evans is day to day β€’ Feb 20, 2018 03:35 PM

@BeddieKU23

TTech is learning what it takes to win the conference. They are being tested and we will just see how this turns out. One thing we should all take out of this... Chris Beard is legit! I'm excited for him being in the Big 12!

Sounds like a toe sprain... often called "turf toe."

I was lucky to never suffer from that, but I've been around players that have. It will slow down the player if his pain tolerance reaches the limit. I've seen guys grind right through it, too.

Even if Keenan can handle the pain without slowing down much, it will be on his mind and he will have a battle trying to remain full engaged (mentally) in games.

In the short run, players often compensate and some even up their game because of the adrenaline (see my Isiah Thomas post)... but over a longer period, the negative effects are sure to surface.

Think about off-the-court life for Keenan. He will have to deal with sleep loss, practice limitations, etc., and Chris Beard will have to develop "Plan B" which will also mean he has to reduce "Plan A" preparation. Another thing... pain, over time, creates fatigue even beyond the loss of sleep. Pain is very tiring all on it's own!

I hope this turns out to be nothing serious. I want to see us battle the best in our league at full strength!

SILVIO!!! β€’ Feb 20, 2018 03:19 PM

I don't think most fans realize just how big and strong Silvio is. He is going to be a handful for Hudy. She better put in an order with the AD for additional iron weights.

Marcus Garrett β€’ Feb 19, 2018 05:16 PM

Malik is learning. Actually...look back at the video. Malik is bouncing while standing in place. But I know what you are talking about. When Malik's man has the ball, Malik typically isn't bouncing. He tends to spread his stance and bend his knees more. And credit to him, this is what he is taught. Bounce isn't always the answer, especially when trying to defend in the ball handler's grill!

One more thing... look at Svi in this video! He is playing far off the ball and he's got some bounce, too!

This idea that some people have that Svi isn't capable of playing good defense just gives up on Svi. He is capable of playing good defense. He just needs to keep focused on defense. Sometimes he loses his focus, and gives away points on a bad switch or doesn't hedge right on a drive, or doesn't know how to play good weak side defense. He is a lot more capable than people give him credit. But he needs to stay in the defensive NOW and so his reflexes are better and he's not making mistakes.

An "old school" strategy for tonight's game would mean we can expect to see Cunliffe used for his 5 hard fouls on Trae...

I don't expect to see that happen because we rarely bring much of a specific strategy into our games against specific opponents.

This game was just an anomaly. We need someone like @Jesse-Newell to run the stats on KU home games showing the calls, and then also comparing that to say... WVU home game calls.

If you want to know the truth.. If anyone should be mad, it would be Self! We have a team that just doesn't want to rumble! Since WHEN does a Kansas team finish at the bottom of the Big 12 in FT attempts? That proves one thing; our guys just don't want to play a physical game.

So we get into a big game with the team that is easily the most-physical team in our league, but we refuse to get physical back with them. I am in awe that we won this game. I still can't believe we won.

But maybe we are crossing the defensive threshold now. Maybe this team can actually prove something RARELY or NEVER accomplished in basketball; playing tough defense without playing physical! I still have a hard time believing it... but this team has had this philosophy all year and is so talented athletically... This is what they believe and they work hard at their game, including defense... so who knows? It did work out on Saturday.

Contrast this with the interview with Sherron Collins... who was asked how he would stop Trae tonight. Here is what Sherron said:

"β€œI think you have to be physical with him. I’d hit him every time you get a chance to,” Collins said. β€œNo easy layups. You have to hit the floor. Hard foul. I don’t want anybody to hurt anybody. You have to attack him. I’d attack him every time.”" ~ KUSports.com

That is what I think exactly... but I am "old school." It is what I said the first time we played him. Wear him down! Put him in hard ball screens, etc. Just keep putting body on Trae to wear him down and he will become too tired to be effective at the end of the game. Now... he's been beat down all year and showing definite signs of being worn down. It works! It works in a single game, and it applies damage to Trae for the rest of the season.

I don't know... I am open-minded for whatever. I have the teachings of the game that are ingrained in my brain and soul. But times change, and I've already passed the threshold of just name-calling on millennials because they bring a different way on many things. I've seen many impressive changes once I opened my mind!

Svi and malik β€’ Feb 19, 2018 04:43 PM

IMHO... we all need to recognize that we are all "hyper Jayhawk fans." What? You don't think so? Why are all you in here reading and posting today when you should be working your job, playing with your kids, etc.? Therefore... most of us in here are victims of "hyper thinking." I, for one, openly admit my guilt!

So we hyper think about everything concerning Jayhawk basketball. So suddenly, our team has stepped out of bounds with our standards "norm" by being in 2nd place in the Big 12 race and falling out of the Top 10. So a fan like @HighEliteMajor introduces the idea that we may have a player feud going on. And I introduce the idea that we have a "green team" perhaps promoted by former Jayhawk BGreene.

Hyper thinking by all of you helped us all address these possibilities. None of us know exactly the truth in any of this. But this is a forum to present ideas. And going off in these directions is healthy. It's a lot better than just calling our players bad names when they screw up. That does nothing but prove the poster doesn't have the mental capacity to post with any depth. And even worse is the possibility that we just have a kumbaya site... feeding fluff to players to build their egos so they never have to hustle or struggle to get ahead.

Don't worry y'all.... I'm not about to go off on another one of my "chip" narratives! LOL

Bracketology thread for the next few weeks. β€’ Feb 19, 2018 04:29 PM

I don't understand the "logic" used to pick brackets and seedings.

Kansas a #1 seed, says Lunardi? Gheezus. Okay.. we have some nice wins. What about some of those horrible losses? This is the sort of junk that creates Jayhawk haters... putting us in the same "rigged narrative" as Duke.

Marcus Garrett β€’ Feb 19, 2018 04:23 PM

I'm a huge fan of Marcus. That move shown from the ISU game is what other NC teams master. Right off the bat, I'm thinking of Villanova.

Notice how Marcus keeps his arms busy... going straight up for the deflection on the feed, and keeping his arms loose and out.. ready to attack. It makes it easy for him to jab at the ball, like he did in this video. Another big thing... notice how he stays bouncing. If he is guarding on a spot where he isn't moving lateral, he will still keep bouncing. That bounce helps keep his feet reacting quickly with his brain and ready for a fast reaction. Also... it is thought that defenses showing more motion, even if positioned in one spot guarding a stationary player... the motion of 5 guys bouncing and showing energy creates a level of chaos for the offense, often leading to anxiety and speeding them up. Watch tape of any game where one team suddenly gets motivated and starts showing lots of defensive motion... usually... it leads to TOs or rushed shots.

Trae is wearing down. It really is that simple. His teammates were exposed in November... it has always been known that OU would only go as far as Trae took them. Their margin of error is almost zero.

But if we think Trae is done and OU is done... we are in for a big shock come Monday. This game is the definition of "trap game!"

Question: With all the shootings recently, especially at schools... does the Mountaineer mascot have the right to bring his prop weapon to other college campuses?

On the wake of all the devastation... what kind of message does that send?

I believe in the 2nd Amendment... but what about sensitivity in times like we are in?

@KUSTEVE

The key is that we finally learn how to finish at the rim when there is a shot blocker waiting. We haven't shown that skill yet... and in some of these games we give our opposing shot blocker a record-breaking stat night!

I can't help but think all the way back to a game we had against Kentucky... didn't they have something like 16 blocked shots? Ridiculous!

I'm pretty sure this game will be decided by the outcome of Konate. If we play it wrong, he will have 10 blocks or so and stay in the entire game. If we play it right, he will spend half of the game on the bench with foul trouble or just not have many blocks because our guys pull up.

This is why I mixed my original post with the idea that we must customize our prep to match the opponents we face.

All our guys today need to get some tips on how to score on a shot blocker. They have to take it to the body of the blocker and use their body to shield the ball. If you really want to foul out the blocker, use one arm to shield the ball, too, so he will have to foul to get to the ball, and then go strong to the rim, preferably with a two-handed slam. You use your arm by putting that arm between the ball and defender. Never two-hand slam aimed "direct on" to the rim.

Another trick is to see the defenders arms and intentionally rake your arms over his. Trae Young did this masterfully in a recent game on a 3-point attempt that earned him 3 FTs.

NCAA Basketball Corruption? β€’ Feb 16, 2018 04:40 PM

I have reasons to feel optimistic about Kansas in all of this. Here is why:

  1. If you look at the first round of those charged, it was all assistant coaches. The first place to look is at our assistant coaches. Self has been with these guys for a long, long time. Our assistants are not young guys, except for Snacks. Snacks... I'm not sure about. But I haven't heard of any of our old assistants having past ethics issues.

  2. Because of our past issues with the NCAA... Kansas stepped up huge with a compliance department that is second to none! It's a model program that has actually helped dozens of other universities setup quality compliance. Granted... that doesn't mean coaching staffs won't go behind their backs... but it puts a huge emphasis on playing by the rules and that someone is watching.

  3. The first round of busts were centered around Adidas and Jim Gatto. I don't know this to be fact... but from my own whispers I have been informed that the next round will target Nike schools. This would mean a much larger group of schools would be vulnerable to the snare set by the DOJ. I just don't see a possibility that Calipari can escape this time. He's finally met his match because the investigative body of the DOJ has capabilities far outreaching the investigators of the NCAA. You all know how I feel about Nike. I've been saying it for years... it is an Int'l crime cartel that makes all the drug cartels seem like choir boys. Adidas is guilty, too... but they don't have the same setup of illegal laundering and cash slush funds that Nike has. I could be wrong about that because most of what I have seen outside of US borders involved Nike.

Just imagine if this really does go down... and if Kansas isn't involved? We are talking about a reshuffle of the blue bloods. I remain hopeful, though I still have the occasional panic attack that many others are having.

https://deadspin.com/ncaas-three-year-investigation-into-fake-classes-at-unc-1819441583 β†—

They are off the hook.

"By leaving the ability to determine what academic fraud is to the member schools, the NCAA created an easy pathway to success for UNC."

I always knew the NCAA to be a bogus institution.... but this should be tried under federal law because of the widespread damage it did to all UNC grads. In the very least, it appears that every student was defrauded on a standards academic commitment made by the university.

NCAA Basketball Corruption? β€’ Feb 16, 2018 01:23 AM

What I will never understand... where was the DOJ when it came to the UNC bogus classes?

That should have been an obvious federal case.

Nothing.

Then... here comes this case. Perhaps this case is important because all kinds of fines can be levied?

Yeah... I smell corruption... but it isn't just the corruption of coaches.

We should stomp WVU with this team... especially in AFH.

I screwed up in my main post by not putting in "primary" along with "secondary." We should have more opportunities with primary finishes because WVU is quick and their defenders are stuck on our guys. I know Konate often waits at the rim to get his blocks. No problem. How about our guys learn to pull up just a few feet out from the rim? Or... take it to Konate and use body between the ball and go into his chest? He is a solid defender, but a good offensive player can always take it to a good defender.

Over the past 13 seasons, we have been able to take a kind of "elitist" attitude to Kansas basketball.

Who can argue with the results during conference play? 13 consecutive conference titles sits atop the NCAA record book!

But this year has been a different kind of year. In the past, a typical conference season starts off with a hot Kansas team, getting out of the blocks quickly and forcing the rest of our league to catch up. We didn't pull away this year. In a typical year, we don't lose a home game, or in the most, we lose one home game. So far this year, we have already dropped 2 conference games at home and we will continue to be tested at home.

In this atypical year, perhaps we need to adjust our strategy moving forward.

In those past "elite years" we carried an attitude that we were the team to beat in the league and were superior to the rest of the conference. So our strategy was to focus all our attention on our own game and not focus on the teams we played and how they could challenge us. This meant a limited focus on scouting our opponents and then putting energy into unique strategies to practice on in preparation to the games to be played.

I believe in those past 13 seasons we also took our "elite attitude" into March. Just look at how we have been beat in March, often by clearly inferior opponents who specifically came at us with a customized game plan on how to win.

I'm not trying to make this an attack on Coach Self's approach to the game. He's a HOF'r and well-deserving of this accolade! I'm just bringing a topic we can discuss that seems to be the best time to talk about it because of the uniqueness of our team.

I still see this team through a half-full glass. We are stocked with talent, and in some areas, there isn't another team in America with more talent (when considering our experience)!

Our biggest weakness appears to be the lack of depth in post players. Granted. But a "glass half full" perspective must see that we are easily one of the best teams in guard strength! The 4-1 offense is the right approach, not only because of the weak post depth but also because of the strength of our guards!

We have opportunities with this team that NO OTHER TEAM in America has! Our biggest strength on this team must surely be "team handles" and "team speed" and "team passing"... three areas where we have not taken advantage of in most games.

Our game with WVU this Saturday is the perfect opportunity to use a completely different strategy than we have run against them in past years. In the past, we always had a preparation strategy of trying to survive their press. So we went into the practice gym and ran our guys against 7-man presses in order to learn to deal with the pressure.

This year, why don't we focus on the STRENGTHS of this team? It is doubtful we will ever have a better team to battle WVU. We shouldn't just be "surviving" their pressure. We should be "attacking" their pressure! We should instantly show our superior handling, passing and speed by aggressively building a huge lead that not only helps us win this game, but puts WVU back on their heels, forcing them to try something else... something that is not where their strength exists.

Amazingly... our biggest undeveloped potential is in the area of "secondary break" offense. We have done a poor job with this all year. Our SB offense execution has shown us all that we do not put enough focus and energy on this in practice. Instead... we just focus on our half-court motion offense. We see how our half-court offense is largely based on a dribble-drive motion offense where our guards often take a one-on-one approach of driving on their defender, into the paint, and either finishing at the rim or feeding out to an open trey shooter. These same skills are often needed to execute a very successful SB offense. But when we do get into the open court on offense, we usually pull the ball out instead of attack the rim. This is one of the main reasons why we rarely make it to the FT line.

If we focus on SB offense, this Saturday, we should blow out WVU by 30+ points! And the really great news is... we will finally start taking advantage of the real strengths with this team!

As we sit today, we live off the trey line. We do get some offensive help from Doke... big time... but we can't count on Doke's offense to rescue us, largely because of potential foul trouble. We all know what this leads to in March. It only takes one game where our treys aren't dropping but our opponent's treys are.

If we add in the most-effective SB offense in the nation to our toolbox, we will have another tool that can help us win and help us from strictly relying on trey shooting.

There is NO REASON why we can't become the most-effective SB offense in the nation as this season closes in on March!

Let's treat this Saturday home game with WVU as an opportunity. Let's realize that we are not superior to any team in America if we don't apply a strategy unique to our opponents. Focusing on SB offense is a definite strategy we can apply on WVU, and we can continue to develop it for the rest of the season... finally taking advantage of the STRENGTHS of our team!

Rock Chalk!

@HighEliteMajor

My old coach that mentored me said the following:

"Momentum is a pathway, and it has to start somewhere!"

Clearly... we had a period where we fell off the path. THAT is what is different from some of the other games. Even our wins looked horrible in that bad period.

My thoughts and prayers are with this team that the hard times are behind us.

On paper, we have one of the most-talented teams in the nation, when you factor in experience, too. Every game we play this year, we are "eating steak."

Eventually... when you eat steak every night you would kill for a bologna/cracker.

I hope our guys are ready to eat steak again!
