Does Only KU Sell Out Home Games? β€’ Feb 22, 2017 04:22 AM

I believe there is some quantum physics involved here. (I know I feel like subatomic particulate matter while watching games in AFH)

No question, there is a constant high demand for tickets to KU games in AFH.

Supply and demand largely determines prices on the secondary market.

Fans that don't have regular season tickets clamor for ANY tickets.

Kansas games with "less talented" teams strangely often end up having almost equal demand than the games with "more talented" teams.

Why? Because there are so many fans that can't pay the super high prices for the big games so they circle the smaller games and then go on the hunt.

This is my theory. I bet you could be a student in just about any area and create a quality study relating to games in AFH.... (hint)

Unfortunately, I have first-hand (I mean, "first-knee) experience with this subject.

None of us can really assess Dwight's recovery time or whether or not he will ever fully recover to get back his previous athletic capabilities.

There are several possible "fixes" for an ACL tear, and the path taken depends on many factors including the severity of the injury as well as the potential to make a come back and play again and also the skill set of the surgeon. Surgeons in the sports area obviously tend to be more gifted at repair procedures giving the athlete the best change of a full recovery with ability to play competitively again. My ACL tear was only part of my injury as a I also suffered a complete patellar tendon tear.

Because of my age (being in my mid-30s) and the fact that I wasn't making a fat pro salary (or ever would) and because of the severity of the injury my playing days were over. I had a top-notch sports surgeon who wasted zero time telling me that I would need play again.

Many ACL injuries require a tendon graft, and those grafts can be taken from various places. Here is a pretty good read on that, where the graft is taken from the patellar tendon.

http://www.houstonmethodist.org/orthopedics/where-does-it-hurt/knee/patellar-reconstruction-acl/ β†—

And then there is the psychological side of it all. My injury happened over 20 years ago and I still do not have the same trust with that knee, and I battle pains, stiffness and permanent muscular atrophy in my quad, even after extensive rehab that took 2 solid years of suffering to accomplish. I had to learn how to walk again and then there was back issues that followed. Since I don't play or even run at full speed, the trust issue became known the first time I climbed a ladder. Luckily, Dwight's injury wasn't as extensive as mine, but the point is that every ACL tear tends to be slightly different and has many factors involved so we can't just lump prognosis into one common statement.

I liked Bill's explanation.... that Dwight was cleared to play but just hasn't received his "snap" back.

My guess.... either it is psychological (trust issue), it is a physical issue (most likely related to strengthen all the tendons/muscles in that area), or most-likely a combination of both. The "snap" issue is quite complex to fix when athletes don't get it back quickly. Many then never get it back, regardless how hard the athlete works to rehab. Genetics also plays a key in this.

It is always fun to make a joke out of their "burnt orange" 70s school color.

I recall one of the old houses near Memorial Stadium had one of those old burnt orange couches they put by the road with a derogatory Longhorn statement on it before we played them.

What does a Longhorn and basketball have in common?

NOTHING

VOTE: Frank Mason! β€’ Feb 17, 2017 12:38 AM

@brooksmd

I dug a little deeper into your info on Royal fans cheating on the all-star vote.

A Royals fan had made a claim that he easily hacked the voting process. As we all know, the Royals dominated the all-star vote in 2015. Immediately, all of baseball flipped out and pointed blame at those "cheating Royals." My bet: this "Royals fan" was actually a "Royals hater." He/she wanted to smear the reality that Kansas City fans are the BEST fans in baseball! That is now well known all through the MLB and is often supported by players, coaches, management and fans of other teams!

I hacked the MLB All-Star voting page in under 20 minutes β†—

Later came the truth -

The All-Star vote hack that never happened β†—

And in the case shown by @ParisHawk ... consider it very similar to the Royal hack that didn't work.

We really don't need to attempt to hack the system to put Frank on top. All we have to do is be good Jayhawk fans. Organize, execute and be persistent throughout the process.

VOTE: Frank Mason! β€’ Feb 17, 2017 12:26 AM

@brooksmd

Yes.... but did they cheat? I thought that was because they put on a full blitz media promotion to get fans to continue to vote. I believe that was the biggest push ever to get players in the all star game!

Trae Young β€’ Feb 17, 2017 12:24 AM

Congrats to Trae for making his pick. It will be good to compete against him next year and beyond.

We have nothing to worry, and can now focus more on Trevon.

If we don't land either of these players, we will still be fine. I'm with @Texas-Hawk-10 , Devonte would be nuts to leave this year with his draft stock low, never getting the top marque spot here, and next year looming as his big year.

Even if we did lose Devonte and these two.... Bill finds a way to make it work. He has been pretty darn successful throughout his days at Kansas. If we become desperate you all will be amazed when a kick butt guard suddenly becomes available after March. Players shift..... remember how we got Frank and Devonte?

@BeddieKU23

This is the first year of Jayhawk basketball where I really haven't questioned our guys for having a lack of motivation. Bill feels the same. You can read on KUSports how he is treating this team different from past teams. He isn't nitpicking the small stuff and staying on them about it. He's focusing on staying positive with them.

VOTE: Frank Mason! β€’ Feb 16, 2017 06:06 PM

@ParisHawk

That works for now... but if this process is legit, their tech people will track IPs and will toss duplicates happening within a 24 hour period. All the incognito does is prevent local cacheing, which may trick the way they set it up.

We hacked one of those online servers a few years ago taking a vote on best arena. For a short time it put us in a huge lead. Then they caught on to the hack and filtered out all of the dups. I think we actually received less votes in the end because everyone lost their motivation to come back and vote each day.

In other words.... I think what you are advising will backfire.

Tonight's games β€’ Feb 16, 2017 06:01 PM

@BeddieKU23

Yes... they got hot, but we didn't help the situation with our lack of perimeter defense.

Contrary to whatever the buttheads on TV say.... our Achilles heel this year is perimeter defense. We step up at times, but we haven't been able to put two halves together, and rarely even one half.

I hope our guys are healthy. Hard to say concerning wear and tear, if the "nicks" are lasting or just something between games.

Trae Young β€’ Feb 16, 2017 05:09 PM

Me, too.... but we can't argue with results.

I think Huggybear needs another 10 guys or so on his bench to put that much pressure on for an entire season in order to prevent his guys from wearing down.

Yes, he plays a lot of guys, but he still counts on a core group, especially on offense. Ahmad is stepping up while some of the others seem to be wearing out.

This is a game of attrition.

ISU's game is finesse to the point of trying to avoid any contact in games. Their guys look fresher than Huggy's.

Senior Class Award Voting β†—

Trae Young β€’ Feb 16, 2017 04:18 PM

I think the real decision here for Trae is whether he wants to go to a predominantly FOOTBALL SCHOOL, or go to a predominantly BASKETBALL SCHOOL.

Even though our football program is about to get turned around, Kansas will always be known for basketball and has invested in plush dorms and training facilities. We have (easily) one of the best strength/conditioning programs in the country that is being used as a model elsewhere.

OU is football, with basketball a very distant second.

Whats Up With Danny Manning? β€’ Feb 15, 2017 11:38 PM

@Hawk8086

True.... and the responsibilities of an assistant coach are completely different from that of a head coach.

I don't know how gifted Danny is as a head coach. But I also think that Kansas basketball success is accomplished by team ball, including team coaching. I don't think Bill could have the success he has had without all the help from his assistants, including Danny when he was with us. If Danny comes back to be a head coach for Kansas, he will be supplied with some great assistants.

Anyone know how good Danny is with Xs and Os? Game coaching?

Did You See? β€’ Feb 15, 2017 11:34 PM

@RockChalkinTexas

"While the chant has become part of the rivalry and is a source of pride for many K-Staters..."

When the source of your university pride is wrapped around saying "F-KU" doesn't that say it all right there?

It sounds like the purple kitties main goal in life is to become the next Mizzou. That is reaching high!

I'm trying to imagine watching a nationally televised game from AFH where our fan base goes nuts screaming "F-KSU."

I can't even imagine and if we ever become a trashy fan base I will be devastated!

One of the many treasures of Kansas basketball is the fan base! The class, the knowledge, the humility.

I was never more proud of our fans when we gave Buddy Hield a standing ovation! Buddy LOVES KU! And we love, Buddy!

Many KU fans have expressed deepest sympathies for OU's Woodard after his injury. I'm one of those fans because I have always appreciated his play and just being a quality human being.

You can shove anyone in a classroom but you can't give them class. That is earned.

Here is the "KU snob" in me...

When AFH set the volume record of 130.4 decibels at halftime during the WVU game, smashing the Rupp Arena record they set while playing us, I think I screamed in joy at 130.4 db!

I loved it! Come on, Kentucky. Don't shake a challenge in our faces.... we'll kick your butts every time you do!

I bet if Kentucky had set that record in a different home game this year, the record would still stand. We clobbered their record by 4 db!

Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde? You Decide... β€’ Feb 15, 2017 10:39 PM

@REHawk

I'm with you on that. Right now I don't see how we win at Stillwater, regardless of the conference race situation. We tend to look like poop every year down there. I think those trends stick with players and they often fall into the same story every time, partially because they believe it is their destiny.

Whats Up With Danny Manning? β€’ Feb 15, 2017 10:34 PM

@bskeet

I am working with a top-level administrator at WF right now who is a huge basketball fan. I hope to get the inside track on Danny next time we talk, which will probably be right after March Madness. She told me how excited the fans were when Danny signed on... but now are just feeling a bit let down.

It might have been better for Danny if there weren't such high expectations placed on him right out of the gate. It will take quite a bit of time to turn that program around beyond just having a good run for a year or two, but to become known as a legit program... especially in the ACC.

Granted, many of the old guard will be retiring soon... I'm not counting on their programs degrading because of that. In some cases... maybe there will be improvements. Duke might have the toughest challenge keeping up with where they are now.

Diary of the comeback β€’ Feb 15, 2017 10:27 PM

@Kcmatt7

Back in the 70s I learned a phrase that was commonly used in college basketball recruiting (also football)...

"The Rolex handshake."

Back then, it was said to be common among some coaches to meet and greet recruits with a handshake while sliding a new Rolex onto their wrists.

During my playground hoops days, we would often joke about the Rolex handshake. When someone netted a shot from 35-feet or smashed a dunk on someone you would hear all kinds of Rolex comments.

I don't have any real knowledge on this to know how much is true and how much is "legend." I always heard the SEC was the dirtiest recruiting conference and the Rolex handshake was common practice.

Whats Up With Danny Manning? β€’ Feb 15, 2017 10:16 PM

!8258658.jpeg β†—

Danny isn't used to losing college basketball games. As a player, he was the dominant force that brought Kansas a national title. His start in college coaching brought him back to Lawrence as a coaching assistant. Kansas won a lot of basketball games with Danny in a suit on the sidelines. Then Danny earned his head coaching debut at Tulsa. Once again, Danny brought winning basketball to Tulsa, accumulating a 38-29 record before heading off to Wake Forest.

I believe we can make a good argument for the Wake Forest job being a trap for Danny and his career in coaching.

It is going to be hard for Danny to change the power positioning of the ACC. To date, Danny's record at Wake Forest is 39-48. Danny isn't used to losing in the college game.

Can Danny turn Wake Forest around? He is in his third year at Wake and has now signed his first ESPN Top 100 recruit, Chaundee Brown. This is big news for their fans, who became excited when they landed Manning as a coach, but haven't had anything to cheer about since. That may also be changing because the Demon Deacons have a winning record (so far) this year at 15-10.

@ralster

I'm sure many people consider me a KU snob. I'm actually more of just a general basketball snob. I love good basketball! My preference is to see Kansas playing good basketball.... but I appreciate most players, teams and coaches that push quality.

Last year... it sucked to lose to Nova.... but I appreciated the quality of their play. They gave all of college basketball a lesson in team play and hustle. Kudos to Jay Wright. He definitely seems to be one of the better coaches in D1.

Izzo.... always been a huge fan! Kruger at OU... always been a huge fan! I've even come to accept the big redneck Huggybear at WVU! His mouth is totally foul... but he gets the maximum out of his guys and his guys love him and respect him. That says a lot.

Devonte Graham Heroics. β€’ Feb 15, 2017 09:47 PM

I've been hard on Devonte all year because the magic we saw at the end of WVU is something unique and positive Devonte brings to the game. We have seen very little of that this year, and we need to see it more often now.

Devonte's magic is a weapon few other teams can match. It can easily be the extra weapon we need to win out in March!

I adored Wayne Selden. Wayne had the magic, too. But as we know, it often disappeared for long periods when it was needed and didn't happen. There is no way to fight up through a loser's bracket in March. One mistake, and adios!

Devonte is reminding me too much of Wayne. I hope he brings up more magic moments because we can use them.... and he can make scouting us impossible because with his magic we truly do have 3 guard threats instead of 2. WVU played off of Devonte to put the pressure on Frank. It partially worked. Teams need to pay the price for slacking off of Devonte. We need Devonte's magical presence often!

Devonte Graham Heroics. β€’ Feb 15, 2017 09:41 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

Not only No Ts.... he drew a T on WVU by using a veteran ploy. He started that exchange, and then stopped and let the guy snag the T. Totally brilliant move!

Trae Young β€’ Feb 15, 2017 09:38 PM

@jayballer54

I hope Trae becomes a Jayhawk, but ultimately, whatever is best for him is the right decision for me, too.

I think he would make an excellent Jayhawk!

Diary of the comeback β€’ Feb 15, 2017 09:34 PM

@ralster

I would also add in the SEC snobs.... UK in basketball, Alabama in football.

I think the most-obnoxious fan base in the world is Alabama football. THE Ohio State University is second in football.

Most-obnoxious basketball fan base.... I have Duke as #1, by a landslide.

I equate snobbery with obnoxious behavior. It isn't exactly the same thing, but snobs ARE obnoxious. Obnoxious people are not all snobs.

Trae Young β€’ Feb 15, 2017 09:30 PM

@jayballer54

When a fan base gets too cocky about predicting a recruit win, it often backfires.

It shows arrogance and a disrespect to the recruit... after all, it is the recruit that decides.... not a fan base.

Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde? You Decide... β€’ Feb 15, 2017 08:32 PM

Which Kansas team is going to show up in Waco on Saturday?

Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde?

!Dr_Jekyll_and_Mr_Hyde_poster_edit2.jpg β†—

Do we bring our better qualities with us and put an exclamation mark on #13? Or do we bring our bad habits and lose to a team clearly inferior to us?

We have an identifiable trend in our play this year. We don't blow out teams, we keep it close until the end and we win most of those close games. It doesn't show we have killer instinct UNTIL the closing minutes of the game.

It seems like this team needs to be smacked on side the head before responding. And now that Kansas has a 2-game lead in the Big 12 conference race, maybe we take this game off?

Or maybe we still have something to prove? Many outside of Kansas (and inside) have been very critical towards our guys not being able to close out games early.

Or.... something new. With a 2-game lead and only a few games left, maybe our guys will feel like the PRESSURE IS OFF and they play loose and stroll out of Waco with an easy win?

What are your predictions of our upcoming game with the Bears?

Very nice commentary β€’ Feb 15, 2017 04:02 AM

@CRH107 said:

Is Lucas enough for us to go the distance?

I hope we give Mitch more minutes. He is undersized, and not strong enough... but he hustles. Things happen when players hustle. He had a block and rebound in just a minute or two of play.

And I also hope Dwight gets more minutes. He is playing with inspiration, too. He's done a respectable job when facing size.

I just don't see a logic argument for having a strategy to be behind most of the game and trying to pull it out at the end and think that can win in March.

Sure it can. And every time it happens it is magic. And magic usually wins it all in March.

But can we count on magic for 6 games?

I'd rather have us count on magic just once or twice.

Good post... but remember we are still in conference play... and then we have March.

It's a great thing that we can come on down the stretch. That is an awesome quality.

But we are getting smoked on our home court. And we can't pull away from even the worse teams in our league.

We need to push our guys to play 40 minutes of basketball. Without that, it is very unlikely we can go far in March.

In March, sure... we will take any win we can get. And a game like this in March is colossal. But can we show a different pattern now? Can we just beat someone down for 40 minutes like most great teams do?
