Wow! Just flipping wow!
Did you read that, or is that a prayer? :-)
God help us all, if TPTB allow anyone to carry concealed weapons in AFH.
That would be the irony of all ironies.
Persons packing CC heat to watch James Naismith's non-contact sport of basketball.
Holy cow! Kids packing heat to class, games and then to bars? That's a flipping scary thought!!!
Looks like there could be a market for KU KEVLAR PLATE VESTS for students this fall!!!
Lol!
So: let's have adidas sponsor the 2, 3, positions by selling the the rights to provide left shoes and Nike the 1, 4, and 5 positions by selling them the rights to our right shoe, and sell uniform rights to UA to provide us 6th and 7th men!!!! Disaggregation for more efficient pricing is.crucial! Then we can re-aggregate into derivatives that can insured with fake GICs and bought by Black Rock with untraceable bailout Fed Notes that George Soros can then buy and use as underlying positions in currency hedging funds that can then be liquidated in increments to fund demonstrations and synthetic terror events that allow a new candidate to run and win on a promise of tax cuts and whatever the plebes might want to hear that election!!!!
A KU Basketball Based GLOBAL MARKET STRUCTURE! And then KU biz graduate students could get grants to study and rationalize it!!
Even drooling could be a powerful offensive weapon in Self's hands. Imagine how much tougher the weave would be to guard with a drool trail.

Your skeptical expectations are reasonable IMHO. How many truly effective 6-5 and taller point guards have there been? Oscar. Magic. Penny Hardaway. Rare air! Those tall twins at U.K. turned out not to be able handle certain situations. If Lance Stephenson and OJ Mayo had to be shooting guards, well, what are the chances for this guy? Not good. But...
But Frank Mason played out of position bigger and better than seemed possible.
And I held some similar and, what I thought, very reasonable expectations about Frank, before he started and even after he played a season. He came as a 2 guard in high school and then played like one, when he played point his first season. I saw a short natural two with a fine shot and blinding speed that could either be in drive/shoot mode, OR pass mode, but not both. I could not foresee him fluidly doing both. But he eventually did. I also doubted his peripheral vision. But it eventually manifested. I doubted his ability to know exactly where his teammates needed to receive a pass to score; that takes insight and empathy. But it emerged.
Tyshawn was a 2 that became a National Finals grade PG.
EJ struggled, but I will always believe that without the injuries he would have made the adaptation.
Self has kind of a spooky sixth sense about who can and cannot transcend what they seem to be.
It seems to have partly to do with the get better gene and partly to do with some kind of fierce drive.
It's improbable, but when Self sees something potentially extraordinary, he tends to get it out eventually.
You guys are having a fascinating debate here. Let me add one variable. What if Garrett has a get better Gene of the sort that Frank Mason showed? Might that change either of your positions? Frank had a lot of physical talent when he arrived. But there was a lot of doubt whether he could be an affective point guard, because of his decision-making and limited dribbling. Leave aside the shooting issue. Would it be too much to expect that Garrett could make good decisions and improve as much in his dribbling and passing as Frank did?
To try to see the glass half full, maybe this predicament is what keeps self fully engaged and so not jumping to the NBA.
Was he ranked a 5-star by the traditional recruiting gurus?
Jethro increasingly shows superior insight to the traditional recruiting gurus.
Note: definition of a tradional recruiting guru--someone sensitive to the nuances of the shoeco-agency complex when ranking recruits. π
Great memories!
Great post.
But...
Why does Self have these problems to contend with, when the HCs of other non adidas programs don't?
My point remains: Self should not even have to have the problems in the first place.
First, UNC HAD TWICE AS MANY 1st round draft choices (2 vs. 1) as KU in the most recent draft, so their recruiting failures likely occurred from a significantly HIGHER starting average rate of recruiting success, right?
Second, surely it's reasonable to infer that whatever recruiting failures UNC has had have been attributable to: a.) Roy Struggling healthwise for a couple of years; and b.) Easy Classgate penalty fears. Even the dump truck dispatchers had to have noticed that!!
By contrast, Self has been healthy as a horse and KU clean as a whistle, so there is little, or no, comparison between the apparent drivers of recent recruiting asymmetry in either case.
Third, by omission, this CBS link tempts one to forget easy class gate, as well as ignore the conspicuous convergence of:
1.) UNC's new March Carney ring;
2.) the new UNC MEGA AIR JORDAN AKA NIKE contract; and
3.) the apparent Justice deferred is justice denied findings so far about easy class gate.
Because of the above, I am inclined to discount the relevance of UNC's SUCKcess of late despite its "recruiting failures."
UNC had the most pieces of any team (or at least as many as) competing in the March Carney last year. They had full rotations of credible D1 talent outside and inside even in the time of their supposed recruiting failures!!!
Sheesh! I would gladly have traded KU's roster last season for UNC's, as far as talent goes, even with Josh on our roster. He was an exceptional player, but Self just didn't have enough good front court players and wound up having to play a shooting guard (Josh) at the 4.
I would always rather have a team with all the pieces than a team with the best player and crucial pieces missing; that's just basketball common sense
Bottom line: KU should be so lucky to have UNC's recruiting woes!
And starting shortly, what with the new Carney ring, Roy's miraculously restored health, and the new fat AirJordan contract, the dump trucks will likely be rolling unlimited into Chapel Heel once again. Duke should be very afraid! The dispatcher, who ever it may be, has a history stacking asymmetry.
P.S.: it's been increasingly conspicuous to watch Roy's health track down as EASY CLASS GATE worsened and get better as the scandal diffused into justice deferred and possible justice denied? I wonder if it might worsen, if the scandal were to take another turn for the worse?
"we have elite eight talent. Not sure we have final four talent (I guess thatβs what I mean by elite). "
We don't even have elite 8 talent. The only reason we get that far is Self. Cal would be out the first round and never win an SEC title with our guys.
Our guys will always tend to be drafted lower than other elite teams, when it's a close choice. Why? Because we are adidas and most pro teams making roster choices, where the choice is close, would be nuts not to choose the Nike player for shoe politics down stream. It's naive to think shoeco-agency politics stop mattering in the pros.
First, it's all too real Self can't fill the crucial 1 and 5 spots with anything better than 4-star recruits. Now he even has to settle for 4-star transfers at the point. The 1 and 5 positions are becoming even more crucial in small Ball, too. If you can't control those matchups in March, it doesn't matter who you have for 5-stars and OADs at 2 through 4. You go home by the 8.
But I also think there is this tendency to forget that most of the pros SELF has in the NBA are his 2 through 4 players, plus the the anomalous outlier, Embiid. And that all of these players, except Embiid, are role players in the L, not franchise players. I hope this isn't intentionally selective memory, but it's at least unintentionally so.
Self can't hope to win rings, if he has to deal with a lack of numbers and guys at the 1and 5 that can't dominate the 5 stars and OADs they meet. He has to control the 1and 5, and have enough numbers not to have to short bench with 7 at Carney time.
This is good to know. UNC under Roy has traditionally been massively STACKED for his first two rings. And his only bad season was when he wasn't. And last season I thought he had the best and deepest talent of anyone. And he had double the 1st round DCs Self had in this last draft. Why can't Self get the quality and depth of 4-stars you say Roy gets lately. Roy had a full rotation of legitimate D1 players last season. No projects. He didn't have to play a 2 at the 4 like Self did. And he hasn't stacked up with transfers has he?
KU is not only the elite school that can't sign OAD/5-stars at 1 and 5.
It is not only the only elite school that loads up on 4-star trannies.
It is the only elite where what possible DCs we have gets undervalued.
Trump has no idea what hard is!
Self has ithard!!

I personally don't give a rip about the NBA, just hope our guys make it.
Start rip-giving. It's vital that we have as many draft choices as the teams we meet to beat in March.
MU Newz:
The Center for Sudafed Cracking Research on the MU campus announced a break through in coal-solar hybrid sudafed cracking. They use solar power to ignite open pit coal fires used to crack sudafed. It won a Shamey--the Shameful Inefficiency Award from the National Institute for Dumb Standards.
Fizzou is striking while the Iron is cold. They are extending offers to Michael Flynn and James Comey to handle campus security.
I hear Fizzou's new fight song is "Deliverance."
A 6-3 shooting guard in the NBA?
Unless Malik shoots, drives and guards like Curry, he could be looking at late first round, or early second round.
Remember, Mario Chalmers, good as he was, was about Malik's size and he was not a hot property in the NBA draft.
SLAP! ESPN lists 9 PGs taken ahead of Frank Mason in the first round alone and Self couldn't sign any of them?
SLAP! Josh Jackson falls to 4th?
SLAP! UK, Duke, UNC, each have more first rounders than KU.
No wonder KU can't make a Deep run as often as the other elite teams!!!!
Self can't sign enough talent.
Why?
Frank and Andrew maybe.
Given the controversies around Boeheim of Syracuse and Pitino of Louisville, its interesting that both controversies surfaced at schools pivotally involved in conferences convulsed by realignment.
Syracuse was an anchor school in the Big East. The Big East was being torn apart by realignment and the Ville eventually left for the ACC.
Louisville was certainly important to the convulsing Big East, and to the unstable Conference USA and played in the All American Conference a year before jumping to to the ACC. The Ville could have made a lot of enemies just with all that jumping.
I wonder if some bad blood is created in the conference realignments of jumping schools, same as occurred when the Big 12 went through realignment destabilization and lots of folks got their noses bent out of shape?
Perhaps there is something about realignment destabilization that leads to a lot of leaking of misbehavior and skeleton locations, when conference relationships frag?
I am often reminded that Joe Paterno and his pedophile assistant that he reputedly protected were long term problems. Perhaps they too surfaced in an era of Big Ten instability, when the Big Ten was preying on other conferences.
Maybe realignment creates winners and losers regarding TV revenues and the losers decide to take a little revenge and leak on the winners, after keeping their mutual secrets for many years.
Remember how KU's Scalpingate had gone on for so long and did not come to the surface until Realignment was destabilizing the Big 12.
Change is a dog in heat.
El Paso: The Legend of a KU Coach and an OAD 5
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I recruited a seven foot OAD five
Nighttime would find me in Big Shoe cantina
Music would play and Dunklina would whirl
Blacker than night were the eyes of Dunklina
Wicked and evil while casting a spell
My love was deep for this basketball playuh
I was in love, but in vain I could tell
One night a wild young head coach came in
Wild as the Big Agent wind
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing
With quick footed Dunklina, the five that I loved
So in anger I challenged his right to sign up this playuh
Down went his hand for the EDC that he wore
My challenge was answered in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young head coach lay dead on the floor
Just for a moment I stood there In silence
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there
I had but one chance and that was to run
Out through the back door of Big Shoe's I ran
Out where the Benzes were parked
I caught a good one, an AMG that could run
Down in it its Recaro and hot wired to start
Just as fast as I could from the West Texas town of El Paso
Out to the Snake Pit of New Mexico
Back in El Paso my job would be worthless
Recruiting even 4s would be gone, in life nothing is left
It's been so long since I've seen the young playuh
My need to sign him is stronger than my fear of death
I started up and away I did go
Driving alone in the dark
Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart
And at last here I am on the hill overlooking El Paso
I can see Big Shoe's Cantina below
My love is strong and it pushes me onward
Down off the hill to Dunkalina I go
Off to my right I see Stillwater cowboys
Off to my left ride Dukies and heels
Shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me
I have to make it to Big Shoe's back door
Something is dreadfully wrong, for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side
Though I am trying to stay in the leather
I'm getting weary, unable to drive
But my love for Dunklina is strong and I rise where I've fallen
Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle
I feel the Swoosh go deep in my chest
From out of nowhere Dunklina has found me
Kissing my cheek as he kneels by my side
Cradled by two dunking arms that I'll die for
One little kiss, then Dunklina good-bye

:disappointed:
After reading this morning about a woman high school teacher in Connecticutt that got charged with having repeated sex with a special ed student in his car and texting another student about wanting to get the boy to buy her "weed", I was afraid at first that "Touching 2019 prospects" might refer to a sexual abuse case involving recruiting!!!!!!
:fearful:
Call some local movie makers in Lawrence and make an indie bio pic about Frank coming out of nowhere in Virginia to call his shot and win POY at Basketball Shangri La.
Suckramento: the place where basketball careers go to die.
Its like the organization is still haunted by the paleo-management legacy that was too inept once upon a time to draft complementary players to win a ring with Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas. UNREAL! It was like not being able to figure out how to draft players to go with Michael Jordan and Scotty Pippen.
Pitiful.
Thanks for the assist.
Nic Moore. Really thought he was a positive influence on Frank and Devonte. Always hoped Nic might be brought onto the KU staff in a beginner slot to extend Larry's coaching tree another generation.
Any idea where Nic is these days?
Answer: Gianni Calipari.
There are two issues.
Issue 1 is whether Self can outcoach Cal frequently despite having less highly ranked players at the 1 and 5? The answer is yes.
Issue 2 is should Self tend to have to face Cal with players with less highly ranked players at the 1 and 5? The answer is no, unless there is an underlying, systemic bias in recruiting.
So sad!!!
I was hoping he was a special case due to family illness, or something.
But since you appear confident he has to sit, then this is really worrisome.
Waiting a whole year just for a four star!!! Wow! Recruiting maybe suffering even more than it has appeared!
You've got to wonder about this situation. Self will have OAD/5-star starting minutes to give the season Moore is eligible, so Self appears to think he probably won't be able to sign better than a 4-star point guard this year or next!!! If there really IS no embargo, then this has to be the toughest run of bad recruiting luck at the point the last 10 years of any top coach at an elite major, right?
Really a tough break for Self at the peak of his professional career at an elite major NOT to be able to sign a reasonable share of the OAD/5-star point guards year in and year out.
Charlie is an experienced PG--a great add.
Him doing well means Devonte can swing 1/2 and rest with fouls.
It means the PG is covered the following season.
It means prospects in Illinois have reason to watch us again.
It means Sherron can communicate.
All good.
But it also means Self could not sign an OAD, or 5-s, frosh at PG.
Self made lemonade.
Wish he did not have too.
My hope for Charlie is he has the qualities of the SMU player Self took to WUG.
If only
This is not how trusting relationships are made on either side.
Amateurism has worked so well for College sports, how about we extend amateurism to private central bank
Ownership?????
You can own a private central bank but you can only earn 1 four year ride, no interest, for a year's printing of sawbucks sawbucks. You substitute an amateur's love of central banking for interest. You commit to an amateur's driven pursuit of competitive excellence for your reward and the edification of higher education. Amateurism could sharply expand what could be responsibly financed.
AMATEURISM FOR PRIVATE CENTRAL BANKING!!!
If we can't get a publicly owned central bank that our elected government can control and not charge interest for, amateurism could be a politically palatable alternate!!!!
Got to stop being dopes charging ourselves interest to use our own currency!!!!
(Note: all fiction. No malice.)
This sucks, but...
Charlie was ranked a 4-star as a recruit, despite being Illinois POY.
He's 5-10 in KU inches.
And Cal probably hasn't given a ride at PG to a 4-star recruit, since sometime before Derek Rose at Memphis.
Coaches play favorites for sure. But a 4-star player just wouldn't have a prayer getting picked over OAD and 5-star talent regardless.
KU has to break the apparent embargo on OAD and 5-star talent at the 1and 5.
Further, it appears KU may soon have to break a potentially emerging embargo on freshman.
Transfer U should NOT be the moniker of an elite major.
Amateurism is venerated by many in America, especially by those that dedicate their lives so unselfishly to its maintenance.
Amateurism has yielded an incredibly successful economic class of basketball called NCAA Division 1. It is a very enjoyable sport to watch. Newspapers used to thrive on it before the internet, at least. Radio has thrived on it. TV networks thrive on it. Cable TV networks have thrived on it. Big Gaming reputedly increasingly thrives on it. Petroshoewear thrives on it. Petro sportswear is thriving on it.
Practically everything that touches revenue generating amateur sports thrives by "touching" it.
Isn't it about time the leaders of our great country wake up and smell the coffee about amateurism?
Amateurism is so incredibly successful--shouldn't amateurism be extended to more and more aspects of D1?
Shouldn't amateurism be extended to coaching, athletic directors, and university chancellors?
Think of how much more successful NCAA D1 could be, if coaches, athletic directors, and chancellors were as generous as players. Imagine how much bigger and how much more fun NCAA D1 would be, if coaches, ADs, and Chancellors were compensated only in scholarships paying tuition for Bachelors degrees and room and board, plus a few bucks a month in pocket money for laundry.
It is unreal how much better NCAA D1 basketball could get for the fans enjoyment, if coaches, ADs and Chancellors prepared for their college sports careers in AAU summer basketball and AAU summer sports basketball schools. D1 universities could recruit them, along with recruiting players, and fans and media could debate and anticipate which coaches, ADs and chancellors would be signed during the next recruiting season. It would just make the D1 college basketball experience even more exciting than it already is!
Wait!!!! Why limit the extension of amateurism from players to coaches, ADs and chancellors? Why not extend it to broadcasters, networks, and Big Gaming? Can you imagine how much better NCAA D1 would become if the money in the sport that goes to TV and Big Gaming were kept in the sport by TV and Big Gaming agreeing to provide their services as amateurs? There's no reason that TV and Big Gaming, Big Agents, head coaches, ADs and chancellors, couldn't excel the same as players excell at providing their services as amateurs. Its about love of the game. We fans love the game so much, we don't even ask for scholarships to underwrite our support of NCAA D1 college basketball. We actually pay for the privilege of watching amateurism. Heck, imagine how much more we might be willing to pay, if TV, Big Gaming, Big Agents, coaches, ADs and chancellors were amateurs.
Its all about love of the game.
Players have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that amateurism makes NCAA D1 college basketball a great sport to watch. The very players that play NCAA D1 are the feeder system for the NBA, which claims to be the best professional basketball product in the world. Now, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with professional basketball. Far from it. They are a successful business model. But the NBA and foreign professional leagues are to greater, or lesser, degree piggy backing off the current amateurism in NCAA D1. Those professional sports wouldn't be quite as good, or quite as profitable, as they are now, without the amateurism of NCAA D1 players. Imagine how much better NBA basketball could become, if NCAA D1 amateurism were extended to college coaches, ADs, Chancellors, Big TV, Big Gaming and Big Agents. Its is staggering to think how much the game would improve if all the monies currently being diverted by college coaches, ADs, Chancellors, Big TV, Big Gaming, and Big Agents were kept in the college game to expand D1 to more and more schools that could recruit, develop and produce more and more players, coaches, ADs, Chancellors, etc. for the NBA!!!!
Of course college players deserve to be paid salaries in the millions of dollars per year range, but its their generosity that makes NCAA D1 so great.
Of course coaches, ADs and Chancellors, could excel the same way players excel if they were as generous as players and committed themselves as totally to the ideals of amateurism as players do.
Of course, Big TV, Big Gaming, Big Shoe, and Big Agents could excel at what they do the same as players excel, if they too embraced the amateur ethic as completely and honorably as the players do.
But there is another level of amateurism that I have not even mentioned that could take NCAA D1 to an entirely stratospheric level of goodness.
The NCAA itself could embrace amateurism.
The NCAA could walk the talk.
The NCAA could announce tomorrow that it will henceforth only be compensated with scholarships for its employees and leaders. These scholarships will be 4-year rides, with renewals at the end of each year, subject to performance review, at state universities.
Its hard to believe how great NCAA D1 college basketball would become if even the NCAA itself were to embrace amateurism. There is no doubt that the NCAA staff and leaders could perform just as well as they currently do, if they were to embrace the amateur ethic for themselves with the same level of generosity that the players do.
Amateurism--its fantastic!!!!!!!!!
(Note: this commentary is written in the spirit of Coach Self's apparent basketball strategy of take-what-they-give us. The leaders of NCAA D1 college basketball give amateurism. Its time to take it. Advocate for expanding amateurism in D1 NOW!!!!)
Thanks so much for the assist on that.
So, if I understand correctly: its the appellate court judge that favored interpreting the law as not setting a precedent for allowing deferred compensation of even 5,000 measly bones players and then the USSC favored not setting a precedent for deferred payment of players of the same measly amount by refusing to hear it on some legal grounds indicating they were satisfied the appellate court judge had interpreted the law correctly by denying players deferred compensation of 5,000 measly bones for their likenesss having been marketed and exploited without their permission. Hmmmmm.
I wonder how the appellate judge and the SC justices would find, if the case were to have involved marketing their likenesses and making millions of dollars off appellate judges and USSC justices without either their consents, or their profiting from the exploitation, while they sat on their benches hearing cases and practicing hearing cases most days and many evenings of the week, while receiving only scholarships for getting bachelor's degrees at a local state university, along with room and board, and complementary petro dress shoes and petro robes to sell on the side, instead of six figure salaries, life long careers, medical and retirement benefits, and clerks to ease their work loads?
Just a thought.
Good question about OBannon et al case.
I recall it was reported Obannon's side won, or maybe reached an out of court settlement(?), but I do not recall reading any stories about where the reputed monies being made off marketing of player likenesses are now going. Do you?
I recall some suggestion at the time that the NCAA and member institutions should consider increasing compensation to players, but I don't recall any stories indicating that player compensation was increased equivalent to the amount of the relevant revenues the case reputedly claimed was made from marketing their likenesses.
I have wondered.
Economic history is fascinating to study for many reasons. But one is the allocation of laborers to work activities. This allocation can shift dramatically over time. Barely a century ago, most of us were required to farm, now a tiny share of that number are needed. Most of us are now required for service work. A century from now AI and robots and cyborgs will do most of it. In 1930s studio Hollywood, vast numbers too numerous to mention in credits were required just to build the city facades, sets, lighting electricals and costumes. I watched a TCM short that showed just the carpenters used to constantly redo just one sound stage. It was stunning. And there were hundreds of sound stages in that era of Hollywood. Now this number is hugely less, because so much is shot on location, on a blue screen. But now the number of FX personnel on a movie makes screen credits interminably longer. And so it goes.
