Post-game Roundup: Kansas vs SDSU • Jan 06, 2014 01:35 AM

@FarSideHawk - I was going to whole heartedly agree with your last comment until I realized it said " conf " and not " off ".

@Crimsonorblue22 - I want to be optimistic with you, but realistically the season is almost 1/3 over with. He probably is who he is. Too bad he won't be smart enough to stick around another year or two and turn into a real basketball player.

@Chris1955 - Good summation. To answer your question of Is there anything that Self can do to change this? ", the answer is YES. Quit recruiting the OAD's. It may work at other places, but it has failed miserably under Bill Self. He's still the best coach in the nation, but in my opinion, the OAD thing does not work in the Kansas system.

@eastcoasthawk - nothing personal eastcoast, but I was Ecstatic that the one OSU lost to Clemson. My contempt for them is exceeded only by my contempt for Mizzery.

A stronger Perry Ellis is hitting 71 percent of his close-in shots this year compared to just 54 percent last year during his freshman season at Kansas.

How weird is that ? A player improves from his freshman to sophomore year?

I wish all freshmen had that opportunity.

@Crimsonorblue22 - My kids are so ashamed of me. I write checks AND I don't have a debit card, I won't order anything online unless that's the only way in the universe that I can get what I want and .............. wait for it ............. I don't own a cell phone.

From Whence Did Fish Ball Spring? • Jan 04, 2014 12:08 PM

@jaybate 1.0 - I think you just redefined the word " brief ". lol

The Stage is Set..... • Jan 03, 2014 03:49 PM

I think Bill Self stays in his office until the wee hours, rubbing his hands together and laughing maniacally, thinking of how much fun it's going to be watching this group of freakishly gifted "toddlers" finally " get it ".

I think he LIVES for this stuff:

Okie St ranked #6, 12-1.

Baylor ranked #9, 11-1

Iowa State - #13, undefeated.

Heck, just to fuel Bill's "hate fire", - throw in the fact that Wichita State is ranked #8 and undefeated.

How can things get any better for us? I wonder if any of the players know that we've won nine, yes NINE straight conference championships? I wonder if Coach has let them know that they're not even going to be the favorite in many of their conference games? I wonder if he's going to teach them how to "Play Angry"? That worked pretty well for some team last year.

I am SO ready for conference play to begin. I think we're going to be seeing the team that we all anticpated before the start of the season.

Except now they may have a chip on their shoulders.

@Lulufulu85 - great minds think alike, huh? Sorry, I didn't see your post before I commented.

@JayHawkFanToo - with all due respect - I'm sure you meant the big "O" is perhaps the best basketball player ever - not named Wilt Chamberlain. lol

2014 Headlines We'd Like to See • Dec 31, 2013 12:35 PM

Ho-hum: KU captures another national title in basketball; Self grants audience to pope.

(Stolen from the editorial section of my local newspaper)

@JayHawkFanToo - Not many teams are going to be intimidated if we're committing 18 turnovers and not playing defense.

Post-game Roundup: Kansas vs Toledo • Dec 31, 2013 12:29 PM

@bskeet - Early on in the game, I believe the announcers said that of the eight turnovers we had at that point, only two of them were forced.

We're playing like a bunch of freshmen.

For the third offseason in a row, Kansas University’s football program has landed a commitment from a high-profile transfer.

College Football talk Ex-Florida TE will transfer to Kansas ↗

Former Florida tight end Kent Taylor confirmed via Twitter on Tuesday that he has decided to transfer to Kansas.

Taylor was the No. 1-ranked tight end in the class of 2012 but he only caught two passes in his first two seasons in Gainesville. His lone touchdown catch game in the 2013 Sugar Bowl loss to Louisville.

THE NEW TRIFECTA • Dec 25, 2013 11:45 AM

@wissoxfan83 - " the best snowman in the Sahara desert..."

About two weeks ago, for some reason, I got to wondering if it had ever snowed in the Sahara desert, so I looked it up. Yes, Wikipedia.....

I thought my wife should know this valuable information so I announced to her, out of the blue, " February 18, 1979 ", expecting that she would know what I was talking about.

Her reply - " Oh - that was the last time you had a good idea. "

Be Safe In The Snow! • Dec 25, 2013 11:39 AM

@dylans - The driver was probably texting at the same time. Haha.

I am flabbergasted at how many people missed the class where they taught the rest of us that, for some crazy reason vehicles (Even FOUR WHEEL DRIVE vehicles, OMG) don't handle as well on snow and ice as they do on dry pavement.

Hmmm..........

Warning: This is from the heart and I'm not smart enough to be politically correct.

Merry Christmas to all of you. Enjoy your family and friends. Be safe. Take time to reflect on what's important to you. Build a snowman. Watch some dumb Christmas movies with your wife / girlfriend (not at the same time, haha!) / kids. Visit a lonely neighbor. Eat too much junk food and worry about it some other time. Reach out to a Missouri fan - NOT!

God Bless - I truly hope you all enjoy the holidays. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!

A Perfect Tension • Dec 24, 2013 12:38 PM

Welcome back @jaybate. From where I stand (sit), it seems as though all this talk of basketball and sports in general should be meaningless. It's not. I don't know your personal trials and tribulations, but during some of my own dark times, reading and interacting with the kusports folks and now the kubuckets clan has really picked up my spirits and helped to get me through the day.

Generally speaking, I prefer a short story or a one liner to a novel, so I sometimes feel that I don't know you as well as some of the others, but I'm glad you're back. I'm sorry for whatever losses you have endured and I hope you are well on your way to a full and speedy recovery from your own ailments.

God bless and welcome to our new team !!

Be Safe In The Snow! • Dec 23, 2013 05:02 PM

People are so interesting.

They wave with one finger when they pass me driving sanely on snow and ice.

Then they wave with BOTH hands, while jumping up and down when I pass them later and their car is in the ditch.

Barry Hinson: 'I regret one thing' • Dec 21, 2013 12:24 PM

@approxinfinity - I coached my daughter's softball team for 9 years and it was the time of my life. The girls had fun, the coaches had fun and the parents were a delight. Bonus - they were really good and racked up a lot of trophies and memories.

My son is 8 years younger and when it came time to coach his baseball team, it seems as though the whole world had lost their minds. The kids still wanted to have fun, but the parents seemed to think that we were a major league farm team and that we were competing for fame and fortune. It was sickening the way some of these so-called adults acted. They were forewarned too. From day one we told them we were there to teach them the basics of the game (I think they were 8 or 9 at the time), to teach them sportsmanship and to have fun. Apparently the parents weren't listening at that meeting.

Did things change that much in 9 years? Or is it just the difference between the expectations of boys vs girls? Best of luck to all you current and future coaches.

@drgnslayr - Forking Ball Spit is nothing to apologize for.

How true, that times have changed. When I got in trouble at school, I'd get the paddle from the teacher, maybe the principal, one or two of my friends parents on my way home and then the real trouble started when I got home. Nobody ran to the newspapers or radio (or internet, had there been one) and cried that their poor baby boy was being unjustly mistreated just because he blew up one or two toilets with M-80's in the boy's room.

A little bit of discipline ( or maybe even a lot ) is not a bad thing. I can't figure out how our society decided that 5-22 year old kids should have free reign of their schools without consequence and then wonder why some of them are as screwed up as they are.

Whew. I feel better now.

Basketball thoughts • Dec 20, 2013 12:24 AM

@JayHawkFanToo - not trying to knock individual players, it just seems to me that, collectively, Self's teams don't dive after loose balls the way some of our "old" teams did. Shoot, Jerod Haase even wrote a book about it (hustle) - " Floor Burns " if somehow nobody has heard of it before.

Basketball thoughts • Dec 19, 2013 11:38 PM

@Lulufulu85 - regarding diving for loose balls (and hustle in general). I love Bill Self. I may even have a man-crush on him, but for a guy known for his toughness his teams here have been comparatively soft. Of course we've had some tough guys. Some very tough guys, but cumulatively his teams haven't hustled like Roy's teams. I'm not a Roy fanatic ( thoroughly enjoyed Texas beating them last night ) but for some reason it seemed like every single kid on his team was being doctored for torn up elbows, knees and chins. I want our guys to be known for that - out hustle everyone.

And learn to shoot free throws.

@drgnslayr - the article says that Darnell Valentine missed a layup to set up that last shot. Actually, he missed (seemingly) 10 layups. That dude could NOT put the ball in the basket that night.

@wissoxfan83 - I'm ambivalent about WSU, but I also have NO desire to play Missouri. They jumped ship ( like the rats they truly are ), why should we play them? They've done no favors for us and they're not in our conference. They don't exist in my mind. Unless they're on the tube and I'm rooting for whoever they're playing.

@dylans - let's consider an alternative action to appease WSU.

Bill Self vs Gregg Marshall boxing match.

The quick yank • Dec 19, 2013 12:47 PM

@JayHawkFanToo - There are two gigantic pet peeves of mine.

1) People who text and drive.

2) College basketball players who can't shoot free throws.

I didn't see anyone texting and driving during that game last night, but WOW, there was some crappy FT shooting. It's incredible to me that in a game decided by three points, one team misses 13 free throws and the other misses 23. Seriously? I doubt if there's any evidence to support this, but my guess is that this year's National Champion will be among the top 10 or so in FT shooting percentage.

@drgnslayr - I've had an " extreme dislike " for WSU for the past 32 years. My brother in law and I had the misfortune to attend the KU - WSU Midwest Regional game in New Orleans in 1981 and I've never really gotten over it. Now losing to them was bad enough, but their fans were obnoxious on a scale second only to the Antlers.

I have mixed emotions on playing them on a regular basis. My gut reaction is - well, I can't say, since we're trying to stay civil on this site, but let's just say they can be a phillips head screw and we're the screwdriver. I DON"T want to play them, because it just ticks off their coach and fans so much and it's fun to watch them squirm. You can't blame them. What little brother doesn't want to play with the Big Boys ??

On the other hand, I DO want to play them. Maybe once a week. I'd just like to watch us beat them senseless about 97 times out of 100 and them tell them " Be careful what you wish for Shock Jocks - it might just come true".

It's 6:09 am and I"m already ticked off. Let's play !

Jason King B/R story on JoEL Embiid • Dec 17, 2013 07:35 PM

@drgnslayr - That was very uplifting and enlightening. I've thought for years that diet and exercise could either prevent and/or cure just about anything, but I've thankfully never had to put it to the test as you have. It seems to be that you've been blessed above and beyond diet and exercise though!

Jason King B/R story on JoEL Embiid • Dec 17, 2013 04:55 PM

@Lulufulu85 - the shark quote is funny. It would have been MORE funny had we showed up to play in the Bahamas.

Games This Week • Dec 17, 2013 12:26 PM

@truehawk93 - lol - are you my wife? The first sentence says UF beats Memphis and CU can beat OSU and then it's flip-flopped in the next paragraph.

Seriously, you're right on with your assessment - Everybody shows up to play KU.

Post-game Roundup: KU vs New Mexico • Dec 15, 2013 04:30 PM

@HighEliteMajor - please consider that MOST of the time, I'm just spouting off or trying to get a giggle (at least for things that seem funny to me). I know he works just as hard as everyone else. But it is frustrating. For him. And me. And probably You.

Post-game Roundup: KU vs New Mexico • Dec 15, 2013 01:17 PM

I believe that Black should be the first guy off the bench. He should be up handing water and towels to the players that are not leading the nation in fouls to minutes ratio.

Sorry. It's early and I should be happy for the win. I just have a problem with a 5th year senior who picks up his first foul literally before he has one bead of sweat on him.

OH - and my daughter called. She said that apparently # 3 on New Mexico ( the guy that looks like Jon Heder in Blades of Glory ) found her headband and she wanted to get it back. I told her to let him keep it. It looked pretty cute on him.

ESPN Poll • Dec 13, 2013 10:39 PM

People (me, anyway) are surprised with inexperienced freshmen playing like inexperienced freshmen because we're KU and we're not used to losing.

I understand it - I just don't like it. By the way, we will continue to have inexperienced freshmen as long as we keep recruiting players that are only going to BE inexperienced freshmen.

WHITE-knuckled.

GREENE - around the gills.

BLACK - makes me blue.

RED - what I'm seeing now.

Ok - there's my play on the color thing. I've read the other posts and I want to say (seriously) hat's off to you guys. You are obviously more mature and far-sighted than I am. I'm just pissed. I get 500 channels on my TV and I actually watched that garbage last night. Most of it anyway. OK, some of it.

Is Zone Defense The Answer? • Dec 10, 2013 11:50 AM

Zone, schmone. Let them play zone. If, for whatever reason, nobody on our team can hit a 3 point shot this season you can still dribble to the basket against a zone.

But then we'd have to learn to shoot a free throw.

Post-game Roundup: KU vs Colorado • Dec 08, 2013 02:34 PM

@HighEliteMajor - I made a "horse" reference just a minute ago, before I read your post. Must be we think the past few games contain a lot of horse****. Anyway - beat that dude all you want. You've got a lot of company.

I need help from my fellow posters - has anyone actually, in person, ever seen Frankamp make a 3 point shot? Not on TV, not on Youtube, in person. I think we've been duped. It's all computer animated stuff we've been fed. I was very, very, very - that's 3 very's - high on this kid before the season started and now I am 100% convinced that he never has or never will hit a 3 pointer.

Keep watching and let me know.

Post-game Roundup: KU vs Colorado • Dec 08, 2013 02:30 PM

@KirkIsMyHinrich - When any opposing team plays Kansas, things happen that would never happen otherwise. Almost every game, someone on the other team has a career night. Someone who has never even attempted a 3 pointer will hit 9 in a row. Seniors who shoot 37% from the free throw line will hit 26 in a row. The most turnover prone team in America will have zero turnovers while forcing us into 12 by halftime. It's what happens.

It just seems worse when we've got a bunch of thoroughbreds standing around using up 33 seconds of the shot clock every trip down the court instead of getting out and running.
