@BShark I modify your posts all the time. JK
@Texas-Hawk-10 As always thanks for your knowledgeable insights. I'm very much looking forward to seeing all the new players on the field.
@Texas-Hawk-10 We certainly progressed on the defensive side of the ball. The defense was successful and fun to watch. It's Coach Beaty and staff's failure to improve at quarterback and with offensive play calling that was unsuccessful last year and has me worried for the upcoming year. Maybe, Coach Beaty is overly optimistic or unrealistic, but I remember throughout the season the high marks he gave our quarterbacks. Perhaps, I'm too focused on that one position and it's shortcomings. I'm concerned that unless KU gets some coaching help for the quarterbacks and the offense, we won't see the significant improvement on offense in 2017 that I was expecting to see in 2016.
I'm interested in your collective thoughts on our 2016 season. I applaud the effort of each and every player and student manager on the 2016 team. There were many individual positive performances that made the season interesting, if not successful. For me, the 2016 season was not successful; the failure to identify a starting QB and get decent production from the position overshadows everything else about the season. The win over Texas was certainly an emotional boost for our program, but KU didn't beat Texas; Texas's 6 turnovers lost the game.
I remain disappointed that Coach Beaty didn't achieve enough success on offense, especially from the QB position. Teams like Iowa State find ways to win games with functional quarterbacks. Coach Beaty didn't. We need to hire an experienced and successful D1 offensive coordinator. The Coach Beaty guided offense was flawed in 2016 and I don't see how just trying a new set of quarterbacks in his offense in 2017 is going to change things enough.
@DoubleClutch Thanks for the interesting post. I've been complaining about football ticket prices for the last several years. Tickets alone cost my family of four $ 160 for seats on the goal line for the Rhode Island game. I spent about the same amount on lemonade because the temperature in the bowl was about 200 degrees. I probably still have the right side tan lines to prove my attendance.
@drgnslayr You may be right: flopping, especially practiced and skilled flopping is part of today's college game and may win a game for a team. I disagree that our players should improve their flopping skills and employ them more often. The Big 12 and it's officials can solve flopping by implementing a new rule that starts with a warning, then a technical foul. The flopping on charges and 3 point attempts has been around for years. When the NCAA instituted the flagrant foul for contact above the shoulders, we quickly saw some players jerking their heads around like Linda Blair trying to fool the refs into making a flagrant foul call. Some of our players are guilty too.
Instead of joining the cheaters, let's lobby the Big 12 to put a stop to flopping. I don't usually advocate more rules, but flopping evinces poor sportsmanship and is bad for the integrity of the game we love.
@dylans I love that they practice the half court shot. When we make one to win a game all of us will be glad they practiced a seemingly frivolous shot. RCJH
@jayballer54 And No. 2/3 Baylor is behind to Iowa State in the second half. Things are a poppin' in D1 basketball. I like it.
@wissox I watched the video of the non-call at West Virginia for months after that game. I still can't understand how an official lets a player with his back to the rim at the 3 point line pick up his dribble and get all the way to the basket for a lay up. Svi's drive was an all out sprint; I still have trouble determining when in that mad dash you start counting steps after the last dribble; when the ball comes up off the floor, when the ball reaches his hand, when? But, Staten was nearly stopped, picked up his dribble, then spun toward the basket. My only explanation is the ref must of thought he dribbled after the spin, but I didn't see a dribble. Oh well, the refs make the calls and we are left trying to understand them and debating the correctness. It's part of the game, my friends.
@StLJhawk Thanks for posting the slow motion clip. I hadn't been able to see it in slow motion. It was a fun game. Next.
@jaybate-1.0 Thanks for catching my typo. Something is wrong with Devonte; he just isn't playing as aggressively as he did last year.
@Blown We won a close game at home against a very motivated opponent. I don't see the travel, but if others do so be it. Yes, this team has work to do, but my goodness, We Won A Conference Game. The sun rose in the east this morning, my coffee maker worked, so all is well. Coach Self will work with these guys. Next..
KState scored 88 points on 51% shooting in our house. If KState had continued to get the ball to Johnson in the paint from the 8 min mark until he fouled out, they would have won. Even doubled by Jackson and Bragg, Johnson could finger-roll shots for easy baskets. It's crazy how teams stop doing what was working. Unless our defense improves, it's going to be tight trying to win number 13. What in the heck is wrong with DG's defense? Everyone drives right by him.
TT upset city. Now that Perry is gone we need javon Carter is old jokes, dude looks like he gets a senior discount.
Lando's my POG with 18 pts. and 12 rbs. Jackson only had 6 second half points and missed too many FTs.
Oh yea, and the technical.
The box score shows KState stayed in the game by making FTs. We had more field goal, but Cats had 6 more from the line.
@approxinfinity I always want at least a two possession lead at the end. Way to close.
@Lulufulu Final fouls were about the same, but we only hit 13/20 Fts.
@Bwag Might have been a walk, but we'll take it.
@autohawk KState played well. Shot over 50% from the field. But, our defense was lacking all night.
Is Lucas due to come back in?
@DanR And KState didn't even get Wade the ball; took a 3.
svi now has 4 fouls.
svi 9 second half points
No defense tonight: 55 points scored against us in 25 min.
@DoubleDD He said something to the ref after he didn't get a foul call.
@Bwag Frank has 9 points.
@Crimsonorblue22 I need to get that. I looked at their other channels, but no luck.
@Crimsonorblue22 Every time we play at 8, the early game goes into overtime. ESPN didn't even put our game on any of their other channels.
Svi has got to get his offense going in the second half. 0/2 so far. No enough shots for him.
Too many points for KState. Our second half defense must improve.
Every team we will play knows we don't defend the corner 3. Let's count how many uncontested 3s KState shoots.
@Hawk8086 I think Coach Dixon has his guys playing well. Note to the Big 12: TCU is going to compete.
Ah Oh. Bad interception=pick 6. I guess the pass was tipped, but sometimes I wonder about Alex Smith.
Denver up and Chiefs getting ready to take the lead. Go Chiefs.
@wissox Yes, he's certainly scoring more often, But, as Frank goes, so go the Jayhawks. Imagine the horror if Frank gets hurt and can't go. It's that nightmare that makes me cringe when he drives into the trees.
I'm sad to see this game isn't televised in Kansas. It's a very important game for the Chiefs and interesting because both teams are playing back up QBs. I hope our KU alums, Talib and Harris have stellar games and stop the Oakland offense cold. It sucks that Denver is going to play it's least experienced QBs to get them some experience. For the first time ever, I'm rooting for Denver, as painful as that is.
I really hope for the best for Evan Maxwell. I remember how scary those decisions were at the age of 20. Evan is a great young man and I appreciate the time he spent at KU. Good luck Evan.
@KUSTEVE For me, it's Frank's drives into the paint against 3 or 4 defenders. You know the ones: Frank plows into the trees with know idea what he's going to do, then contact sends him flying across the boundary into the photographers and cheerleaders. I hold my breath until I see that he's moving and isn't paralyzed like every other human being would be.
Our game against TCU shows any team may beat any other, even if the other has higher acclaimed players and a stellar ranking. TCU and chesty Coach Dixon did not care about our players or ranking. The Oklahoma teams are the weakest in the Big 12, but both are capable of good enough games to upset us. Devonte, Bragg and Vick need to step up their play and be more consistent every game. Mason, Lucas, Jackson, and Svi form the foundation, but it will take steady contribution from the others to win number 13. Vick stepped up against TCU. Without Vick, we would not have beaten TCU.
@BShark I guess this is why they still have to play the game. Good grief, the Vegas line that we found laughable before the game was spot on the last 10 minutes of the game. TCU under Coach Dixon is darn good and is going to beat a lot of Big 12 teams. Friday night's road win against a tough foe feels pretty good today. RCJH
@KUSTEVE I don't fault Josh for only being on the court 12 minutes. Some of it is just the way the game flows. Mostly, the refs seem to call fouls on Josh for the most minor contact, when much more contact between other players goes uncalled. Self was right to protest strongly about the third foul called on Josh. Against a different team, a double technical probably results in a loss. The calls against Josh reminded me of the first several games of the season when no matter what Josh did, a foul was called.
I worry that other OADs will see the refs putting Josh on the bench and choose to play in other conferences. Does anyone know if there is a post-game review by the Big 12 of calls and non-calls? I've always wondered if the league grades these guys.
Thanks for mentioning Bragg's involvement. I had to go back and look at the box score to realize he contributed in a necessary way to get the road win against a determined TCU. In 16 min., Bragg had 9 rebounds and 5 points. He was in the mix under the glass. Way to go Carlton.
What I like about Jayhawk basketball is watching who is going to get the job done given what the opponents and referees are doing. Frank is this team's Perry. Put him down for 20+ every game. Vick and Lucas were my heroes of the TCU game. Vick is a necessary component to our success this year. RCJH
@RockChalkinTexas Same to you. Much more fun to come this year. Wow!
Whew. A little to close for me.
Mason 19, Vick 17 & Lucas 15
Lucas 13 pts, 15 rbs. He's back.
@BeddieKU23 Really, TCU is playing very well. The refs put Josh on the bench.
What does Vegas know that we don't? It's spread is right on so far
What fun. Welcome to Big 12 play.
