West Virginia Game Saturday • Jan 07, 2023 11:09 PM

Joe Lunardi has KState as a 4 seed. Does that seem strange to anyone else besides me?

West Virginia Game Saturday • Jan 07, 2023 11:05 PM

@Jethro Did the previous shot hit the rim?

West Virginia Game Saturday • Jan 07, 2023 10:48 PM

There was a while that going to WVU seemed terrifying. But it hasn't been that scary lately.

West Virginia Game Saturday • Jan 07, 2023 10:39 PM

that arena looks different

West Virginia Game Saturday • Jan 07, 2023 10:30 PM

A foul on WVU? That's odd

When Huggy was a boy his mom told him if you keep frowning like that your face will freeze like that. He didn't listen to her.

West Virginia Game Saturday • Jan 07, 2023 10:23 PM

It doesn't even matter that they're not calling fouls on them. We can overcome

West Virginia Game Saturday • Jan 07, 2023 10:21 PM

My sound doesn't work with ESPN+ so I'm just guessing that WVU fans are booing about every 10 seconds.

247's Draftable List (NBA Draft) • Jan 07, 2023 03:39 PM

@BeddieKU23 When he came to KU I was like wow, he shoots threes like a junior high kid. He still has the motion of having to 'wind up' his shot from the hip. I can't imagine that shot working in the NBA even as he's shooting it at a 52% clip this year. (5-5's do wonders for shooting percentages for low volume shooters)

Bill Self the GOAT • Jan 07, 2023 02:04 PM

Linardi has us as the top #1 seed right now and if we stay on the #1 line it will be 11 out of the last 17 seasons we'd get the #1 seed. Bill Self indeed is the ALMOST GOAT! @StLJhawk

Bill Self the GOAT • Jan 07, 2023 02:03 PM

@StLJhawk Oh I know, I was just using the term since everyone talks about the GOAT this, the GOAT that!

I'm a little surprised to see Dajuan's name on that list but great to see none the less.

Boy Brad Underwood is losing it at Illinois. They had yet another meltdown at Northwestern the other night giving up a 22-2 run to seal their fate. Today a 5 star freshman Skyy Clarke announced he's leaving the team "for personal reasons". Obviously I have no clue why he did this but his early PT was lagging behind other freshmen in their highly regarded recruiting class so people are speculating of course that it had something to it.

After their impressive win over Texas they have played 3 games against power conference schools and lost all three while winning several tuneup games which didn't serve their purpose apparently.

@Crimsonorblue22 Part of my anger is because I really dislike Iowa, but watching the refs just let Fran cool down and withdrawing the T they'd called after he crossed half court yelling at the Indiana bench was just egregious. It probably cost Indiana the game. Which means a T should have cost Iowa another game. Fran has done that twice in his career. I'd be in the AD's office tomorrow if I was an Iowa fan demanding he fire the fool.

Other games • Jan 06, 2023 04:11 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 I realize that. I really don't know what Jethro meant.

Other games • Jan 06, 2023 04:08 AM

From another tweet: Mike Woodson on the incident with Fran McCaffrey coming over towards the #iubb bench late in the game: “That’s bullshit. He should’ve been thrown out of the goddamn game.”

Other games • Jan 06, 2023 03:37 AM

This clip shows the T, and both McCaffery's having to be restrained. Then mysteriously there's no T assessed. This is really bad officiating. Indiana fans are pissed. ?s=20&t=nCVgthsOHbptncYMRRu8Jg

Other games • Jan 06, 2023 03:23 AM

Fran blows up again in last minute of a 2 point game. Fran was over by the Indiana bench yelling at Woodson. His son has to be restrained by his own teammates. Ref signals Technical and then takes it away. How can you retract a tech?

@Texas-Hawk-10 Wow, that's an interesting list. It goes without saying that we hit the jackpot. Of course it's all speculation, but we dodged some bullets for sure. Wasn't Doherty a failure at UNC? Turgeon, wow... Mark Few may have found similar success here, he's pretty solid. But Calipari? Oh my, I didn't like that guy even at that time, always thought he was kind of sleazy.

@drgnslayr I love being one of those fans who constantly complains about the officials. I wear that badge proudly, the watchdog of officiating, the critics critic, the law and order of officials.

I'll say this, although we've been complaining, seeing @Jethro and his foul discrepancy since Dec 1 and everything, I think it's a statistic that lends some credibility to the zebras. Because of course the narrative is there that KU gets the calls, but there's data disproving that.

Bill Self the GOAT • Jan 05, 2023 04:19 PM

Patrick Beverly, Anthony Davis, Robert Covington, Terrance Shannon, are some other names from Chicago that pop up into my mind. @DanR It's just fun to speculate on who might have gone where had things been different.

Of course if Self stays at U of I, who would KU have hired instead? I don't remember the names being thrown about back then. Would Brad Stevens have been on their radar? Jay Wright? Matt Painter? He was definitely a coach with some upside in 2003 making a name at SIU. Would they have considered Tim Floyd? Bo Ryan? Thad Matta? I'm thinking we got the best man available and it's not even close.

KU vs Tech Game Thread • Jan 05, 2023 02:33 AM

@BShark TTech fans are football fans so they really don't understand the game. I seriously doubt KU fans would be clamoring for a hanging on the rim T in a similar situation in AFH.

Bill Self the GOAT • Jan 05, 2023 02:31 AM

The Chicago to U of I pipeline was shutdown for all intents and purposes when Jimmy Collins, the coach at UIC wanted the Illini job and they hired Weber instead. Jimmy made it a race issue and Chicago kids started going elsewhere. The demise of DePaul was tied to something somewhat similar. Joey Meyer ticked off the King coach Sonny Cox and Sonny made it tough for Joey to recruit the city after that.

Bill Self the GOAT • Jan 05, 2023 02:26 AM

@DanR Illinois' near national championship team was nearly all Illinois kids. Deron Williams the one exception.

For coaches with at least 100 games coached in the BIG Bill Self has the best winning percentage in the league. All time!

For coaches with at least 100 games coached in the Big 12 Bill Self has the best winning percentage in the league. All time!

This man is a genius, a bonafide legend, a true GOAT, a basketball savant who deserves mention as a face on the Mt. Rushmore of coaching if a thing existed. There's other worthy candidates of course, but to read that he is #1 in two of the most difficult conferences is truly remarkable.

To see his record at Illinois, a place starving for basketball success is part of the reason so many here where i live in the Chicago area are still embittered about him leaving. No one in their right mind would stay coaching in Champaign if KU comes calling.
Just as Bill is a multiple NC here I truly believe he would have similar if not better results if he'd stayed in Champaign. Nearly every great player from this state would have gone to the U of I had he stayed there. Derrick Rose, Jon Scheyer, Jalen Brunson, Evan Turner, Jabari Parker, Jahlil Okafor, and so many more probably don't go and play for others.

I'm super glad we got our man in 2003. But part of me is just curious as to what kind of dynasty he'd built had he stayed.

Here's other Bill Self statistics that will blow your mind.

He missed the dance his first season at Tulsa, but has made it every season since, including his last two at Tulsa.

The last season at Tulsa his team was ranked inside the top 20. Since that season (99-00) he has never had a team ranked worse than 18th.

Every team he has coached in that same time period has achieved a top 10 ranking at some point during the season with the exception of 2005-2006 when he was cooking up something very special.

He's had a top ranked team in 8 different seasons. I'm thinking he'll achieve the top status at some point this season.

Although he didn't get to the NCAA tournament at Oral Roberts, he had losing records his first two seasons of coaching and then starting in 1995 he had a winning record which he has achieved ever since.

2nd on the all time BIG list which is fascinating to me is the name Bo Ryan. He was remarkable in what he did.

One good thing about Ttech only getting 6 fouls called on them is we don’t waste as many possessions by missing FTS! As it was were only 2-4 and this teams ineptness at the line worries me a bit. We’re at 68% and should pressure situations arise later in the season we’re going to be holding our collective breaths.

KU vs Tech Game Thread • Jan 04, 2023 05:18 PM

@BeddieKU23 In Madison last night the Badgers had 3 fouls called on them with 15 seconds left in the first half. Minny had possession so the Badgers start fouling since they have fouls to give.

2nd half starts and in the first 5 minutes they'd called UW for fouls 6 times! Inconsistency, yes indeed, pretty blatantly bad this year.

KU vs Tech Game Thread • Jan 04, 2023 03:45 PM

@BShark Thanks. Since I watched much of the game on fast forward maybe I shouldn’t comment on officiating but that last sequence…KJ got creamed too on his dunk

KU vs Tech Game Thread • Jan 04, 2023 03:14 PM

@Jethro I've never minded Michigan in the BIG. Dickinson made a stupid comment I acknowledge and I suppose Wisconsin will use it for motivation.

KU vs Tech Game Thread • Jan 04, 2023 03:02 PM

Read through comments just now. Most disagreed with Fran saying Tech should have received a call in the seconds before the KJ dunk. The kid tripped on his own. I watched it over and over again, but Wilson totally had his arms wrapped around the Tech guy who fell backwards. Looked like a foul to me. I know Fran annoys us, but when he's right, I hate to say it, but we should acknowledge it!

KU vs Tech Game Thread • Jan 04, 2023 06:51 AM

I'm still on Christmas break so I drove up to Madison to watch the Badgers. Watched game when I got home at 1AM. Looked at Instagram not expecting to see KU score. I did see the 1st half and first 5 minutes of 2nd. Once I found out final score, I didn't want to take time to watch the rest especially with us melting down a bit. Glad to see a win at TTech. A tough place to play for a decade or more now. Terrific win for the nations best.

Just watched the ending. Another controversial ending with Jalen fouling the guy on tech before the spectacular Adams dunk. But not our fault the refs miss a call.

Speaking of Adams, what a game! He's really improving, gaining confidence, passing well, and cementing his place in the lineup. He'll be in beast mode by the time he's a senior.

But goodness, what a game by Dajuan!! Didn't see every moment but knocking down big shot after big shot in the 1st half.

1 loss going into 2nd week of January is probably a little better than I expected by this point.

@BeddieKU23 I was noticing Jalen getting fouled while driving. Someone kept complaining about moving screens and I thought they said the 3 ball near the end by OSU was an illegal but I didn't notice it in the clip above.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I think you're right about the inconsistent part.

@Bosthawk I think it's impossible for officials to just call things like they would in the first minute and the last minute. You might be right. Kevin was thinking don't let him score. Make him beat us on the line. What's puzzling is the lack of replay review on the OOB on the previous play. Not sure why Self didn't ask for a review unless his player told him don't bother. I'd think players might honestly tell a coach it was out on me and don't waste a review when you might need it.

Gradey I thought showed a lot of maturity yesterday. He didn't force shots especially from the outside. Only scored 8 but filled the box score with rebounds and assists. We may not win without his amazing hustle rebounds and passes out to open 3 point shooters in the 2nd half. 6 points resulted from those two plays alone.

Georgia gets to play a playoff game in Atlanta.....

Some interesting spotlight on officials today.

First, foremost, of course our game.

Here's a pretty good video, mainly of scoring plays.

Of course the headline on CBS

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/kansas-vs-oklahoma-state-score-no-4-jayhawks-erase-double-digit-deficit-escape-after-controversial-finish/ ↗

"Controversial Finish". The words jumped out. ESPN avoids using the term. FoxSports I gave up looking for a story.

There were various opinions on our game chat. The twitter response to the CBS sportswriter is pretty overwhelming that this was a non-story in the game. OSU fans said '"we shouldn't have blown a 15 point lead". KU fans noticed the generally feeling that OSU was receiving favorable calls throughout the game. Many pointed out the out of bounds call that wasn't reviewed just before that McCullar block. I didn't see it closely enough to determine. If you watch the video I linked it is on there but nothing conclusive except it does seem to appear that OSU guy just fumbled it out of bounds.

In a more important game (sorry but it was!) Michigan was questionably robbed of a TD that would have greatly impacted the game if it had been allowed to stand. If you didn't see it, here goes.

Ruled a TD so if I understand the rules you need incontrovertible proof to overturn. In real time it is very clearly a TD, it was a surprise when they announced a review even. It's really a 50-50 call, but replays shouldn't be 50-50 to overturn.

In the last play of the game MU's hopes ended when a guy got reviewed for a helmet to helmet type call. Appeared to be to me. Refs say no and game over. Longshot for MU even if they get the call because they would have had about 50 yards to score still with about 25 seconds.

Internet will mean these things will be discussed, in our case maybe weeks, in MU's case years. Generally reviews work well, but at times it leads to headscratching moments.

What's your take on todays plays? Did we receive home cooking as the CBS article claims? These things matter not in terms of national security or political stability or anything but fans pour a lot of emotional energy into our teams and we want things to be called right.

KU/Oklahoma St Game Thread • Dec 31, 2022 08:24 PM

At the half we had 9 or 10 TO's, i forget which, but we only had 12 at the end of the game and that's really a key to this comeback.
