@Kcmatt7 True, that wasn't that long ago of course.
Discussion on sports talk radio today about how the portal has devastated this years tournament. Mid Majors are losing too many guys to major powers meaning there's far fewer really good players at the mid major level.

Oh, I forgot, it's a business!
I was watching at the Y while running. The first thing I see is the refs showing a review and I see the replay of a Baylor guy with a hand on the back of a Duke guy shooting. I mean maybe a common foul...maybe, but reviewing for a flagrant? No team in America gets a play like that reviewed. A few minutes later Baylor dude gets shoved into a Duke rebounder by a Duke guy and he gets called for a foul for pushing the Duke guy. Another one everyone starts lining up for Baylor FTs after a whistle and refs send them the other way saying, no, it was a foul on Baylor. I'm pissed for Baylor.
Case could be made that Self and KU would've played yesterday if KJ didn't get hurt. For what it's worth Mayjay, my Badgers on line community is far worse. Yesterday they 'forced' me to turn the game off at the half. Wasn't going well, but the online people were trolling big time.
It is nice to be a KU fan and to be honest, "my" 1988 championship is a lifelong feelgood memory that few college students get to experience and it's made me content to take these season ending losses nearly every year since.
Although the Sox have me sad, it's freed up a lot of time, and money in the summers to do other things that are pleasurable in the summer. I live right along Lake Michigan, 5 minute walk, and last summer I spent so many great evenings over there that might have been sitting in my lazy boy watching baseball if the Sox were decent so, football is the next sport season I really pay attention to! First world problems we all have for sure.
NCAA is really kind of stupid. (newsflash!). Almost 5 hours of air time Saturday and Sunday afternoon to run 1 game during each timeslot, with six still to play and then have to overlap them the rest of the day til late in the evening even on a Sunday night. I don't know who makes these decisions but it's really pretty aggravating.
@kjayhawks I'm at my elderly parents who live with my sister. The game was background noise that I turned off at the half. Figured if they came back to win I'd be excited and could watch my recording. First half wasn't aware of the refs being bad.
Really kind of surprising that the schedulers couldn't have had OU and MichSt play at different times yesterday so the Fears brothers parents could've watched both sons play.
2020 tournament cancelled, presumptive national champs. 2022 national champions. 2023, coach sidelined by heart ailment for tournament, but go ahead and spread the narrative that he's made 1 trip out of the 1st weekend. Nice arbitrary last 8 years, because if you make it 10 then you've got another FF, an elite 8, a sweet 16. But go ahead and make up crap of why Bill Self should be fired.
I haven't seen one name that's gotten me all giddy with excitement. Teams get lucky of course or like us this year bad luck happens. this year for us two transfers that seemed to be good really let us down, while one way exceeded expectations while two more were adequate for their backup roles. It's just a crapshoot of a process that giveth and taketh.
Knueppel's little bro was on TV tonight here in the Wisconsin semi finals. Wonder if their parents went to the State game in Madison or the Duke game against a 16 seed. Little bro plays for state title tomorrow. Lots of miles on the car/flier miles accumulated this season.
Not sure how the NCAA sets these games up. But just wrapping up are the Fears brothers. Like the NCAA really couldn't have scheduled the two games at different times so the parents could watch both? I'm sure there's been other conflicts with players out there as well.
@Crimsonorblue22 Yeah I miss them too. A lot have moved on.
@approxinfinity Congrats! We know who all the smart ones are here now!
Credit where it's due, didn't actually open our group and Beddie is in there with me and realistic homer as well.
I'm not hopeful tomorrow as UW plays BYU but that's where my hopes are. After that i just cheer for BIG/B12 teams and whoever is playing Duke or Kentucky. Really not hoping to see a UCONN 3peat either.
@kjayhawks He's a total scumbag. I can't imagine ever liking him as a coach. If KU had hired him I'd have quit being a KU fan.
1 after day 1. Never been in such rarified air! 2 wrong. My heart bracket has broke my heart already!
Bill Self #2 all time BIG 12 coaches win percentage, Roy is First. BIG ten. With at least 100 games in the league coached Bill Self is #1 all time. Don't give me any of this crap about Bill Self. The man literally is first or second on the all time lists of two of the best leagues in the NCAA all time. I fully trust he'll get this ship righted soon.
@patoh3 You might be right. I still can't fathom leaving KU.
Travelled all afternoon. Got here to mom and dads and just finished watching. Disappointing finish, LOL.
Factors,
Injury to KJ seems to be when the meltdown doomed our season. Forget the exact game situation but had the ball up three I think. Then started back with the inexplicable turnovers. Those hurt us all game. Really frustrating to see so many experienced guys make such boneheaded plays.
I always complain about refs and when it says Ark 3 with about 3 minutes left I'm pretty pissed because that was a physical game. Haven't read the chat above so I don't know if anyone had the same thoughts about refs. I really can't think of a specific except Zeke getting bumped out of bounds once late it looked like. Not sure refs were a huge factor as much as the ugly turnovers.
Arkansas was very beatable today so it's a bit frustrating but I'll get over this one pretty fast since the real regret about this season has been building since we got blitzed by Creighton in mid December and it was just a sign of things to come.
I've 'won' 3 nattys in my time as a KU fan. Really spoiled as a KU fan and it's a whole lot better than what most D1 fans go through with their teams. Most can only dream of FFs. So trying to keep a proper perspective on all of this.
I know people have a difference of opinion about this but as much as people will blame Harris and KJ and Dickinson for this disaster of a season I blame the dudes Bill Self recruited to play here that left and would still be here if they appreciated what it means to put on a KU uniform. Grady and Furphy and the St. Johns Dude and the TCU dude and others i don't really care to even look up their names could've been part of a core that might've been cutting down the nets this season. I hope Furphy had fun sitting on the bench again tonight in Indy getting zero minutes while on the other side was Jalen Wilson who probably told him you could've been playing tonight in the NCAA tournament you greedy fool. I guess Grady's hurt, whatever, he could've been THE MAN this year making 7 figures as a college guy. Whatever. Have fun in the national Boring association. The transfers I understand a bit at least. NYC has some appeal for whoever is at st johns. But TCU? Really? Leave KU for stinking lousy TCU? Why?
All of these guys are the real guys to blame for leaving our cupboard half full this season. The recruiting restrictions hurt too of course. 3 lackluster season finishes in a row have got me even thinking do we need a change? Maybe Self is doing some soul searching and will follow the still viable successful coaches like Jay Wright into retirement. IDK. Not used to this year after year feeling.
Making my wife drive as we drive up north to visit elderly parents so I can watch Badgers game on my phone, but then it will be petal to the metal when I take over so we can make it there on time for KU game.
@approxinfinity It's been really interesting being a fan of both teams a lot of these years. Keep waiting til they both really click at the same time and get to the FF together. While I try not to talk about them too much here it comes up because they're the only other team I'm really familiar with besides KU and sometimes it can relate. I participate in one of those SBNation sites with them that is very active and fills my need.
Devries is really getting a black eye over this process claiming he held his son out for most of the season so he could transfer to a better school than WVU and not risk getting hurt. Of course this is a year after being hired away from his previous stop at Iowa Agricultural Institute (I forget where he was and would rather just make up a name than actually, you know, research where he was). When taking the WVU job he told the entire state he was in it for the long hall as a mountaineer. What a rough week to be a Mountaineer fan.
Had one bracket picked with the heart with KU beating Wisconsin! KU over UCONN in the regional final which actually would be a very interesting elite 8 matchup. The other picked with the brain had Auburn over Houston.
Maybe I shouldn't make my evaluation of Reneau this way, but Indiana has just underachieved for a decade now and I just see him as a part of that. 5 star I think, which scares me as a Badger fan, and then we beat them like we almost always do and just think meh, whatever. Maybe it's more mishandling by Woodson but I'm a no buy on Indiana guys.
SEC is pissed they've lost the last two football championships BIG schools so they've got to get ships in hoops.
This may guide our discussions. I suppose it'll blow up after this weekend is over and most teams seasons are over.
Noticed that Freeman's HS and Iowa teammate Brock harding is also in the portal. The two of them were great in hs, not sure if Brock is KU quality.
Who does Pettiford play for?
@stoptheflop You're forgetting the two former Kentucky coaches matchup that could happen with Cal and Pitino.
Cal trivia
Calipari is from Moon Township near Pittsburgh. My dad got stationed there after Korea as an Army draftee. He met my mom at a church there. She was from Mars, PA. So a Mars woman married a Moon man. (true story)
Calipari's daughter attended the segregation academy called Briarcrest 'christian' School in Memphis. This school was made famous by Michael Oher in the Blind Side.
Calipari of course was a part of the dynasty of coaches at KU in the mid 80's. College/NBA hall of famer Larry Brown had Cal as an assistant. Bill Self came along for 1 year with Brown, and Gregg Popovich then came in as a grad assistant. In this little activity I just learned Popovich is from East Chicago, IN, a town so close to home that I sometimes go on runs from my house into East Chicago. Never knew that part of this whole thing!

@Crimsonorblue22 This is America. You're supposed to get a bonus for being inept.
Or even get elected president
@BeddieKU23 Committee chair from UNC I think I read. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?
I would almost think some Tar Heel fans are a little bit embarrassed to be included in this thing. I haven't read much on the tourney, but is WVU getting written about as the biggest snub?
6 homers in one game v. Baylor this weekend. This team is on a roll. 17-2 record.
@BeddieKU23 Any thoughts on kids from the BIG who averaged 17 a game coming to KU? :)
We have a lifelong exemption no matter our record so it makes sense.
Add your entries you hear about that are interesting.
I'll start, Owen Freeman, Iowa big, 17 points, 7 boards. No clue how his game checks out for us, but I saw him win a state championship in Illinois too, and was intrigued.
@DCHawker Last year the bench at UW was pretty short so they had to lean on AJ. They really have some nice depth now. I'm really lucky to be a fan of them to take the sting off of another down KU season.
@kjayhawks UW's calling card defense is no longer there with this newfound lets outscore them philosophy.
@approxinfinity It was an exhilerating game. High level play. Yes, hopefully KU gets back to that. It wasn't that long ago that it felt like they were at that level beating MSU and Duke.
This afternoon Wisconsin blitzed UCLA with 19 3 pointers tying the BIG tournament record. They have the BIG reg season record from earlier this season when they made 21 against Iowa. So UW, the offensive juggarnaut now owns both major 3 point records in the Big 10. Greg Gard has completely changed the way he coaches and it's really pretty fun to watch.
I was warming up on Jayson Williams coming to the Bulls until he violated his contracted and ended his career in the motorcycle accident and harmed the Bulls chances, but it led to them getting Captain Kirk, so I was happy to see him in Chicago.
See you on selection sunday. Ya'll gonna lose to you know who!
Thanks for getting our hopes up and then going stupid.
Refs snatching our chance away from us.
How many steps they gonna let that big estonian travel?
Easily could have been an And 1 on that last hunt basket seeing that last replay.
I'm glad we fought back into this game but it just feels like we don't have what it takes to win.
Way to hustle back on D. NOT
Mayo's handles weaker than mine.
Kentucky fans gonna have to stay up til 1AM to finish watching their game tonight. It's only in the first half.
