Oh, I'd read he was doing our game.
@Jayballer We are getting Walton tonight. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!
By the way, my original response was an opinion with no name calling, just a very real feeling that I have about our dearth of championships. It was to that response that you started the name calling by calling me lame.
@jayballer54 If this was a discussion sitting in a bar or something, it'd just be a fun debate. By keyboard, these come out differently like we're super pissed at each other. I don't want it to sound like that. I like debates. Maybe I can work on introducing my objections to what you write in a different way, I'll try.
@Crimsonorblue22 Way to play the peacemaker!
Hilarious! You put this quote into mine and then criticized me for what you wrote! You wrote "Guess what? - -let me tell you this if you sincerely think that our loss even begins to compare to theirs then all I can say is WOW." See the post I wrote right above yours. Not sure if you did that intentionally or not, but I didn't say that.
Sorry if you think I'm attacking but I call it like I see it. Your post looks petty. Maybe I should just keep my mouth shut but as you can guess, and I think the same is probably true for you, I'm a big mouth!
ACC has won 3 of the last four National Championships, just saying, so they are pretty good.
@jayballer54 Here we go again. Creating a post gloating about UNC losing a week after we were embarrassed at home. They're the champs. Creating a post that mocks a team for loosing a game they should have won just seems pretty silly. It makes us look like insecure fans who feel satisfaction when another team loses a game. It makes us look like defeated fans who think, well, our team stinks but at least one of our peers sucked....last night at least.
And UNC is coached by one of our own. Roy Williams, a near legend at KU.
@dylans I like Walton. I rarely need announcers to tell me what's going on anyways. To me the best sports announcing is the home team call on a baseball broadcast, radio or TV. Obviously they're biased towards your team. But when you get a good one, like I do as a Sox fan and Steve Stone and Jason Benetti, then it's just a joy to listen to.
We spend our summers in Wisconsin and I'll listen to Brewers game on the radio just to hear Eucker because he's so good.
@dylans We're all glad you were at the game, and a little jealous too.
I'm sure their defending national championship status will help soothe their hurt. I would take a loss to Wofford if we were still living in the glow of a national championship. But I'm forgetting what that feels like.
Dakich thread started the other day.
And when have we ever cried about the officiating in AFH? Hard to remember. The other night Lightfoot allegedly drew a charge in which the Omaha guy breezed by him and the rushing wind knocked Lightfoot over. I don't like Dakich but there's some truth to what he is saying.
Visit these boards (not just ours but the others that are similiar) on selection Sunday. KU got screwed is the general theme.
Visit these boards after Dick Vitale calls a game. Whining, crying, he hate me type of stuff.
Visit these boards after just about anything negative happens and there's a lot of whining.
Being a KU fan is an interesting thing because in the whole state there are no professional (big 4 sports) teams. 3 DI programs only. So Kansans pour a whole lot of emotion into these 4-5 months of the year when the hardwood Hawks are playing.
But the thing is, fans of any team are pretty whiny so to call us out as the worst is very subjective....and foolish. Because of some these insecurities Jayhawks fans will never forget some of these things that he said.
@nuleafjhawk Oh, I thought you were talking about Jaybate!
Drove through the Stanford campus last summer. Pretty place. Was amazed how their football stadium blended in to the point where if you weren't looking for it you wouldn't have noticed it.
I was privileged during my Baton Rouge years to be in the PMAC to see Oklahoma and Buddy Hield play LSU and Ben Simmons. It was a big time atmosphere, only time I've ever seen it there in 11 years of going to games. It was a spectacular game with a large OU comeback led by Buddy, really fun to watch.
It was also notable, and oft discussed in LSU circles that as Buddy began to shine in their comeback Simmons sank into the background. I forget the specifics but he didn't shoot in the last five minutes. Even their last possession, down by 1 with time to work for a decent shot he doesn't touch the ball. A consensus top player in the upcoming draft playing against an top ranked team and a chance to win with a buzzer beater and he doesn't touch the ball.

There isn't one fan in the B10 that doesn't hate Dickitch's guts. He's a punk.
I walked behind him at an LSU game once and came close to just 'accidentally' spilling my drink on his head. I wanted to stay and watch the game since it was Kentucky so I decided not to.
@drgnslayr To me there's a big difference between Walton and Dakich. Walton earned the right to blatter on and on about anything because he's a legend of the game. If DD wasn't announcing games on ESPN no one would even know who he was.
I don't mind Walton too much. Although I hope we don't have him Thursday night because we'll hear him call the PAC12 the conference of champions oh, probably 12 times throughout the evening.
@RockChalkRedlock Yes that was another classic.
@approxinfinity Notice at the bottom of that link is a blurb about Malik Newmann visiting 5 schools, but not MSU where he first ended up.
@jaybate-1.0 Benetti gets to work with a possible hall of fame broadcaster in Steve Stone. I doubt Dakich is a future hall of fame anything! It showed tonight.
@Crimsonorblue22 Bad grammar?
@kjayhawks Just for kicks look at Texas Southern's schedule this year.
Benetti shone tonight. I can't wait til baseball season starts again!
Classic line tonight. The play by play tonight is a great announcer named Jason Benetti. I'm a little biased since he's the White Sox play by play guy with the great Steve Stone at his side. Tonight he had to work with Dakich, not my favorite announcer. Dakich got into a twitter fight with Frank Kaminsky. Not a good idea. Dakich blocks fans who say anything negative about him on his posts.
Anyways, Dakich tonight says "if Graham gets going Kansas is going to be ok" So Benetti says, "so for the next two hours you're going to say what's obvious?" LOL!
By the way, Benetti the only major sports announcer who has cerebral palsy.
I have never lived near Kansas so I'm really not up on KU's broadcasters. Of course I know of Max and Bob, but today I listened to a podcast called The Voice behind the voice. Brian Hanni was interviewed extensively back in September and the episode is available on ITunes. Really good stuff.
I guess you could look at it and say we win comfortably if he had done better than 0-9 shooting instead of we won because he made an assist. It was discussed other places, so we don't need to rehash whether he should have played, but his poor play nearly cost us that game.
@JayHawkFanToo I think I've got to amend my statement. I misread yours a bit focusing on the last 20-30 years but yoiu acknowledged basically what I wrote. I won't edit my post as I think it is brilliant. :)
I do want to quibble with @HighEliteMajor however as he left Clyde off of his team. He was a NPOY, 2 time All American, and of course a NCAA MVP. Hard to see him not being on an all time team for KU.
I'd say we can go big with Wilt, Clyde, Danny, and take your pick for the guards as long as one is JoJo!
@JayHawkFanToo Bah Humbug! Wilt was the Babe Ruth or Wayne Gretzky of basketball. His stats just blow away all others. He was so much better than the average player it's not even a discussion on whether he deserves mention! Now players did catch up to the Babe of course, and Lemieux came relatively close to matching Gretzky's brilliance, but Wilt has numbers that no one has ever come close touching. I wish I knew why it didn't translate to championships, but people here who are older than I have claimed he never had great teammates.
All the others OK, we can argue the merits of Danny, Clyde, JoJo, Bill Bridges. But Wilt, no, there's no argument!!
(just debating, having fun, not mad)
Wilt Clyde JoJo have to be on any all time team I'd think so I'll push Frank, JJ and Nick off of yours to make room
I think @Jesse-Newell got his ideas for his game commentary from me :) http://kuhoops.com/ku-basketball-news/190217694/ ↗
I researched this quote a little.
-
If you type into yahoo "Did James Naismith really say Indiana is where basketball really was founded" you'll see the title of your little post here!
-
He said it in 1936 in a speech at the Y in Indianapolis.
I still think it was a fun game. I think I acknowledged that it's not a resume building win, but important nonetheless.
When a team slumps it's always a relief to win again because you get the dread feeling that gee they might not win again unless it's some really bad team.
Nebraska is not a great team, but they were playing their championship feeling game tonight. And we withstood their best shot. They shot 50%, they outshot us on 3's, they tied us in rebounding, they blocked a bunch of our shots, but we won. We made all 8 of our FT's they made 6 of 8. So was the difference FT shooting?
Not really. Bill Self is a masterful coach, and on a night when Newmann contributed little, Garrett still hasn't contributed, Cunliffe, mystifyingly so, at least to me, got only 2 minutes, Svi was MIA most of the evening, Self drew up two great plays that won the game for us.
The alley oop out of the timeout and the game winning 3 by Svi. Brilliant game winning maneuvers. Coach Self also recognized a mismatch inside, although it wasn't really a size mismatch, it was definitely a skill mismatch and Doke aka Udunka made them pay. Tshimonga, gives up only 1 inch and 12 pounds to Doke, but his line of 2 points, 4 fouls, and 0 rebounds means we really won the game in the paint.
The contribution of Lightfoot shouldn't be dismissed either. 4-4 FT's in a 1 point game are huge. Drawn charges don't show up in box scores, but they're difference makers and he had at least 2. That's 2 fouls on them and our ball twice. Not sure what we did with those possessions, but we were efficient enough to have a chance to deliver and....
Svi delivered. Not sure if that's his first game winner, methinks he had a slightly controversial travel at the end of a KState game two years back, but this was a big shot. And he got hot at the right time. A big bucket when we needed it most.
So the team that Bill Self called his softest team the other day, toughs out a win under some duress, in front of a hostile crowd and an inspired team and gets a nice pick me up win. It won't register as a great win nationally, but we all know the significance of it. We took a step back towards regaining the rock chalk mo that we need.
@kjayhawks I agree, it would strengthen the game at the Division 1 level.
Last year was the All time baggage team, if you can have a collective team. Talk about drama! There were cars also, women, pot, fights, and whatever I'm forgetting, but goodness, they were in the headlines all year it seems.
And the unfortunate part is that it may have cost them a national championship. An engaged, interested, sober Bragg just may have been enough to get us past Oregon, particularly because we lost Doke. That team was so talented, a consensus national player of the year, a top 5 draft pick, but they couldn't overcome the adversity from all of the drama. And I'm pissed about it. We should all be chillin this year over a two game losing streak with comforting thoughts of the reigning national champ. Instead we're all freaking out over our thin bench and getting blown out in AFH and already looking forward to next year because there isn't much hope this year. Except had Preston been cut from a different cloth, then maybe we're still dreaming about a championship this year.
Baggage costs us championships.
Fultz is supposed to be really good too. But like embiid and Simmons before him he's hurt and will miss the season I think. Sixers could be on the biggest stage soon.
@JayHawkFanToo I like it. NCAA baseball of course has the double elimination which is kind of confusing, but they now have a 2 of 3 'sweet 16' which they call super regional. Of course, it's kind of sour grapish because I whine saying oh, I know we're better than them, I wish we could have a series with them.
Most of us live near DI college basketball programs. Most of us could very easily go and watch DI college basketball games, often times see major conference teams rather easily.
Unless you're going to see a blueblood at home, it's actually easy to pick up a cheap or even free ticket whenever you want.
Years of living in Baton Rouge I'd go to the PMAC just because it was pretty good basketball. They looked like major college players, sometimes even were. For a few big games I'd need to plan ahead, like the great Buddy Hield OU v. Ben Simmons and LSU match two years ago. Awesome game that felt big time.
But most of the time I'd show up 15 minutes before hand and find someone on the street who'd give it to me for 5 or 10 bucks. Then I'd wait until the first TV timeout and move down to sometimes even courtside seats because people don't show up.
If I wanted, even closer was Southern University with a large 10,000 plus arena with usually fewer than 1000 fans in attendance.
And here's my gripe. There are entire conferences that average less than 2000 in attendance, conferences that are considered D1 that get their champion invited to the dance each year. The Northeast conference averaged 1,100 per game and four others less than 1500 all putting teams in the dance.
For years I've thought there are way too many DI teams. If your fans don't care enough to show up and fill the gym at least half way, well, then I don't care to see your teams name on a line on the bracket.
I'd favor making an attendance requirement. I can't even say what the number is, but goodness it's got to be more than what the local HS averages. So let's say it's anything below 4000, 3000? Don't know exactly. But it will benefit our basketball.
If the OAD charade ends, which there's rumbling for some rules changes in this regard, then it's going to change the hoops landscape. Players want to play D1. If you change how many teams there are in D1 then there's going to be more competition for D1 players. It will improve the quality of play. I'm all for it.
Most college basketball these days sucks. The quality players are spread out too much and there are too many college aged players languishing on NBA benches, albeit, very wealthy ones.
This document has lots of attendance data. It's pretty interesting to people like me who are fascinated by weird sports data.

Cunliffe can play, correct? If so, what does he play, shooting guard? Will be interesting to see how/if he contributes.
Video and some great Joel banter.
Mildcats got a new sponsorship from Special K and will wear a uniform that will say Special K State.
Speaking of special k state, a new special basketball class for the mildcats teaches such things as what an octagon actually is, why the name silo tech is fitting for them and why they will never achieve the success of either of the other DI programs in Kansas.
Speaking of special k, Coach K now has a new endorsement with the cereal brand and will be required to eat a bowl of their cereal during one of the TV timeouts. He will be paid immediately after finishing the bowl and then will be required to give the money to the officials and TV announcers. And he will be henceforth known as Special Coach K.
And speaking of special K they have also entered a sponsorship with the other mildcats we hate. They will also need to change their uniform and it will read SUK across the chest.
Bill Self has been contacted by Dick Wolf about cowriting a new Law and Order series called KU Law and Order. The series will focus on the fascinating world of law that involves getting players eligible to play college basketball. The show will include cameo's from Cliff Alexander, Cheick Diallo, Ben Mclemore, Jamari Traylor, Josh Selby, Silvio DeSousa, John Philip Sousa, Sammy Sosa, and of course, the aforementioned Billy Preston.
Teams are really optimistic about playing Kansas now. Missouri just contacted the KUAthletic Department about playing a game on Christmas morning with the loser having to give their presents to the winners. The wish list of KU players just got more expensive.
One and dones will no longer be called that after the NCAA entered a deal with Dunkin's. They'll now be called One and Donuts.
Donald Trump just exiled Tripper Allen to his cousin in Pyongyang. Tripper quickly put kjil to the test and tripped him. Services will be monday at the Korean clown college with speaker Special Kim Jung Il providing the eulogy.

Nebraska has a gorgeous arena. And that football stadium seems to have more end zone seats than sideline seats. Not very fan friendly.
@Crimsonorblue22 Oh I'm the same way about him. I really don't try to criticize kids for decisions about where they attend school. My regret I mentioned was more selfish regret.
He goes against my 2nd love Badgers who are way more beleagured than the Jayhawks. 7:00 on FS1. He's averaging 12 a game, 2 blocks per contest and pretty good rebounding numbers too. As I'm watching I'm going to be regretting he didn't stick around Lawrence.
Questions, so many questions,
So if he's received this car in some way that's not cool with the NCAA, but we didn't use him in a game the worst consequence for us is we don't get to use him, correct?
In other words, this doofus doesn't know, or doesn't think he'll get caught, or whatever can not get us put on probation as it stands now, right?
Maybe we're fortunate he got into the minor accident because then he's playing while driving a car that he shouldn't, and then we do get nailed for major violations, right?
Once they find out it was an agent or a booster, we're going to find out his/her address and light a paper bag on his porch that is full of poop and ring the doorbell and watch as he puts out the fire with his fancy shoes, right?
And finally, should we add a wing to the rules of basketball museum (anyone seen it? I'd love to) and call it the KU hall of shame, and feature doofusi who bring shame, embarrassment and more losses on our beloved university? Make every recruit walk thru it so they understand what's at stake.
Unless there were some personal reasons, like his mom or dad went there, I'm not all that impressed by a kid going to Alabama to play basketball. Of course really good players choose odd schools every year, but you've got to wonder sometimes with these kids.
False alarm, Joel seems to be ok.
Just realized teammates Mason and Jackson playing against each other too. Mason slightly outplaying thus far.
