Road games and blue bloods • Oct 18, 2016 06:45 PM

@KUSTEVE I was simply responding to your claim that the ACC is a cupcake league. I don't believe it is. That's all. I actually was looking at this years schedule and UNC goes on the road 3 times. In my mind that's acceptable. In my mind it's all about being ready to win in March and I just wonder if we're shortchanging ourselves or not.

@kjayhawks Thanks for answering my original question. When was our last tough true road game that wasn't part of a predetermined 'challenge' or 'classic' or whatever.

Road games and blue bloods • Oct 18, 2016 04:40 PM

@KUSTEVE Really? I was looking at the bracket from last year. Half of the elite 8 was teams from the ACC! That sounds pretty tough to me. Granted the bottom half of their league is pretty weak. I do like that our league has stayed small enough to allow for the home and home with every league team.

In my opinion, even 12-14 team leagues could play a home and home. Obviously it cuts back into their non conference cupcake schedule, but who cares? If I'm a season ticket holder I want to see games against good conference foes, or even bad ones, more than games against Youngstown St, Oakland, TAMCorpus Christie, etc. I think it's an insult to season ticket holders to make them pay for games where they're likely to give away their tickets because we'll beat the snot out of those teams.

As for the other arguments, I get it, but if I'm coach, I'll wait til the laughter stops, but if I'm coach, I'm scheduling in a way that is best for my team to prepare for March. Since March is neutral site games, maybe tough neutral site games is the way to go. But since half the league is in tough away games, maybe we need to prepare for that as well by playing a couple more decent true road games. Our league road record is less than stellar in recent years and that's at least partially due, IN MY OPINION, to not having to play in tough road environments before conference play begins. I'm sorry, but playing at UNLV is not a tough road environment!

Road games and blue bloods • Oct 17, 2016 04:36 PM

Soooo, looking at basketball schedules of the blue bloods, and for this purpose, blue bloods are KU, duh, UK, Duke, UNC, What's wrong with these teams that they're afraid to play in a true road environment. Gonna throw in Villanova since they're defending champs and UConn because of their frequent championships in the last decade.

Other than the mandated Big12-SEC game where we play on the road, we're only playing one true out of conference road game at UNLV, just before Christmas. Sure, we go on the road for some neutral site things.

Duke 1 road game besides conference games and neutral sites, also at UNLV December 10.

Kentucky 1 road game at Louisville, besides all the other neutrals. They actually have a stout schedule with some really good non-conf matchups in neutral sites.

UNC actually has 3, kudos to Roy! At Tulane Nov. 11, (I just might have to travel down to NOLA to watch that game) I can't figure out why they're playing at Tulane. At Hawaii which is a sort of warmup for the Maui, and at Indiana, part of the ACC-Big1G thingy.

Villanova.1 true road game at Purdue.

UConn At Loyola Marymount and at Ohio State.

I'm not sure why we shy away from true road games. It didn't used to be that way. When I attended KU in the 80's, Kentucky, Duke, Louisville all came to AFH, and we went to NCS, ST. Johns, and others during those years.

Let me ask you this, what's the last non-conference game at AFH that you got excited about? Kentucky of course last year was anticipated but we played them because we had to, not because we wanted to. Some tough teams have come in I guess, San Diego St, Temple to name a few. But we haven't had a just because we wanted to home game against a really tough team I think since Arizona about 8 years ago I'd guess.

Now, when have we had a true road game against a really good team not in our conference? We played at Florida, got our tails kicked but I think that was also because we had to play them as part of the challenge series.

I'm not sure if there's a correlation between playing a tough road schedule and winning it all. Duke has always scheduled this way and of course has some rings. It's very satisfying to go on the road to win against tough teams and I imagine it can't hurt too much to try to see us play more of these true road games.

Of course, 4 of top 9 are Kentucky and 3 of top 6 are Duke.

Big 12 Expansion • Oct 17, 2016 02:54 PM

@jayballer54 They own the SEC network. That's the conference they're beholden to, not the ACC. In general an East Coast bias exists across sports with ESPN, but I wouldn't say they're kissing ACC butt.

A lot of folks, Midwestern folks, west coast folks, would say ESPN covers us too much. We get to watch the large majority of our games on ESPN don't forget. I think ESPN likes us. They make money off of us, so why wouldn't they? Of course you don't see our football games on ESPN, partially it's a contractual thing, but mainly because we're not competitive.

Lagerald vs Svi • Oct 12, 2016 06:18 PM

I listened to JNewells podcast yesterday and he was talking about Vick. He said just watching them practice/scrimmage for ten minutes he could tell no difference between him and Josh Jackson. Now, he's not saying LG is as good as JJ, but in short flashes he showed a lot of game. We saw that last year. He's the 2nd year player that I am most excited about. Bragg, if reports aren't being exaggerated, will be very good this year too. But LG has got to get these minutes and he'll become valued member of this years team.

NOt sure how I missed this thread a year ago, but this is hilarious! Was looking for who'd play my other coaching hero Bo Ryan. Doesn't have to be anyone good looking or happy.

KUSports commenters are laughing at us now.

@Crimsonorblue22

I said I'd take his results, not him! To be honest, his program has really been cloud free (as much as I can recall). Sure we despise the apparent favor Duke receives from officials, Dicky V, etc, but that's not his fault as much as it is the people who give in to him.

(Another) buzzer beater from Mario • Jan 15, 2016 02:45 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Mike Conley Jr. was out of the game for some reason so Mario got a lot of PT. But his stellar game shows how valuable he can be. I'm really surprised he's not starting for someone.

@JayHawkFanToo I like Bill Self, but I would trade Coach K's results with Coach K's in an instant. Of course Coach k had a head start and maybe, hopefully by the time he's done Bill Self will be his equal. But for now, I'd take 5 titles in the last 3 decades over our 2.

Wisconsin High School Fan Behavior Guide • Jan 15, 2016 03:03 AM

@DanR "Ooops" That's what WIsconsin fans will have to say after accidentally chanting "air ball" at some poor lad!

Wisconsin High School Fan Behavior Guide • Jan 15, 2016 12:48 AM

I'd like to see them ban the greatest cheer/taunt in Wisconsin sports history. "Sieve, Sieve" after goals are scored in hockey matches. Hockey fans won't give in too easily on that one.

As a Badger state resident for 14 wonderful years i wasn't surprised to read that embarrassing headline when I saw it the other day. It's a great state but you've got a state capitol literally walking distance from the state university and some of that big university liberalness drifts down the street to the hallways of the magnificent capitol building. Ask @jaybate-1.0 he knows the geography there, better than I do actually. I could go on a rant about Wisconsin style liberal politics but I won't! But what you brought up @brooksmd is just a perfect illustration of it.

Andrew Wiggins • Jan 14, 2016 05:38 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

You hit on it, but I notice the box scores of all of our former Jayhawks, and while it's encouraging to see Wiggins scoring, his rebounding and assist lines are woeful. He's had one double double all year. Interestingly that game he had 10 boards and 6 assists, both season highs, and 32 points. But I don't understand why he doesn't put up big numbers in those other categories.

Free Diallo? • Jan 14, 2016 05:20 PM

@AsadZ The perception is he was riding the bench, the reality is Cliff's minutes dropped some, but not as much as we think it did.

http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/cliff-alexander-1/gamelog/2015/ ↗

Since we're talking about Cliff he did appear to be competent on the court. I think we all agree that we haven't seen that from Cheick.

Another thing I noticed on the Sports Reference game log. Our record last year was nearly the same last year at this point in the season. 2 losses, a bunch of wins. The nature of the losses last year were quite a bit different, but last year at this time we were guardedly optimistic. After 1/13/2015 we went 7-5 while Cliff was playing, and then the March flameout which is too depressing to even figure out what happened after that.

Free Diallo? • Jan 14, 2016 03:59 PM

@joeloveshawks I don't follow Kentucky at all, but aren't they saying the same things about Skal?

If you look at the drafts from the days when you didn't have to attend college to get drafted, there's a list of kids who never played college, got drafted, and never played a minute.

Free Diallo? • Jan 14, 2016 02:27 PM

Here we go again. This article raises questions we're all used to discussing, but it's interesting to see it from a national perspective.

Chicken Little • Jan 13, 2016 09:15 PM

@jayhawk-007 I think the reaction, or overreaction if you're right, is that we feel like this is an instant replay of our last two seasons.

Conference play starts, we get a few wins, and then boom! A bad loss on the road, in fact in the first tough place to play on the road in the league season. We laid an egg. We played like crap. We showed no fight.

So to some of us overreacting it's here we go again. You are right, it could be an outlier. Wisconsin had their outlier at Rutgers last year and nearly won a national title. But it could be the first crack in the shell of what turns out to be another disappointing season ending.

I'm not sure what you saw last night that made you think elite 8 at worst? But I do like your optimism! Rock Chalk!

"Fool's Gold" makes its debut • Jan 13, 2016 06:44 PM

@DCHawker I noticed that stat too. I didn't get to watch the game (thankfully) so I looked at all of the mindblowing stats, and saw 20 made FG's of which 10 were 3's. That's a draw dropping number.

Kansas vs West Virginia • Jan 13, 2016 03:12 AM

I guess I kind of lucked out and my ESPN3 malfunctioned and fast forwarded to near the end of the game revealing the score. I'm really pissed that this team is not tougher than this. I got to see the first ten minutes or so, played OK, and then WVU started making layups, we started missing shots all over, turnovers, and then the thing fast forwarded inexplicably, which I guess saved me from watching this miserable underachieving team that we've had ever since nearly winning a championship. Why can't we beat freaking West Virginia? This is not Kansas basketball. We don't automatically assume a loss when we go to any gym in our conference. But now we do. We know we can't beat WVU at their gym. Sure they'll come to Lawrence and our soft little players will decide to perform for the home folks, but not before losing at KSU, OSU, OU, ISU. Sorry folks, but this loss feels like we're going to bomb out in the NCAA again. I hope I'm wrong, and I'm usually more optimistic, but the instant replay I saw of the last several years games makes me very pessimistic.

@ralster I've posted that before too, and you can add Greg Popovich to that same list as he spent a season in Lawrence as a grad assistant or something like that. The greatest collection of coaching talent ever in one place!

He's respecting us by saying he feels disrespected by us. We're in his head. We're who he's thinking about. He knows none of those other teams have won anything in the last 15 years so he's got to talk about us.

Go ahead Williams, play a road game before 12/30. Play a decent schedule. Then you can feel disrespected.

And by the way, thanks for the bulletin board material to fire us up for tomorrow night!

I know they wouldn't give us the trophy, but I'm still hoping the Sun times report nails Kentucky and their 2012 title is taken away, and I know it will never happen, but, wouldn't it just be great if it did!

Totally off topic, but there's been no sight of @HighEliteMajor this past week. Was looking for his take on the last two games. Have i just missed him?

@wrwlumpy 1st road game December 30. What's wrong with coaches these days who don't want to play away from home?

@nuleafjhawk Just find his post from last years visit to Morgantown!

@jaybate-1.0

Game keys to me. They kept shooting the three, despite the poor 1st half. They nearly shot back to their season percentage. I think this might be a first in the Bill Self era!

Superb defense.

And I don't think this was a kissing your granny with her dentures out win. I think it was a good win. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we never trailed, never of course had a huge lead either, but we knew TT was going to be tough, and we won with only one real pressure shot, Grahams 1+1 FT when we were up by six with a minute left. He made it, game over.
