The OLine did look better today. Pooka is a stud. Rutgers is really bad too. KU will be favored next week.

Pooka is damn good. Nicholls is probably a win if he could have played...

@BShark Because this game is at CMU, the broadcast of this game is based on the MAC TV deal, not the B12 deal.

Ah okay. Makes sense.

Yeah KU isn't getting to 85 a game unless it's the best team ever under Self. I think the 82 in my projections could be tough, but I believe the overall talent level of this team is pretty good.

@KirkIsMyHinrich Lol. I kept trying to at your other username that I know and was wondering why it wasn't popping up here. Anyway, if KU defends at the level of those UK teams watch TF out. Those UK teams were pretty damn good offensively, good enough considering their stifling defense and pace.

I guess Chanel 38 in KC broadcasts only the home games? Not getting ESPN+, might get the trial 7 day during the basketball season if there is a preseason game not carried on Chanel 38. Following the game on ESPN gamecast.

Only the first game was a Jayhawk TV game. They only get the 1 football game.

More details here: https://kuathletics.com/sports/2017/11/15/jayhawk-television-network.aspx β†—

All other games should be part of the Big 12 deal and I bet ESPN relegates most they have to their ESPN+ service.

Late Night is actually included in this as well which is really cool.

I think overall ESPN+ is worth it but not for just KU football games.

Both of these teams are rancid but CMU might be worse which is saying something. I remember seeing that CMU has a few players out this first half because of ejections last week.

@Kcmatt7 I didn't notice the dip in time or I likely would have put most of my winnings from betting on Nicholls last week on CMU. Wasn't going to touch it near a TD.

Lip service imo. Dotson is faster with the ball and has better PG instincts from what I have seen. Obviously we need to see Dotson play real games at the P5 level. Moore is more of a scorer and definitely a better shooter than Dotson.

@Kcmatt7 Yeah, even last year KU was #144 in adjusted tempo.

Best offense in NCAA basketball β€’ Sep 08, 2018 06:31 PM

@Kcmatt7 McCormack is good but I still don't see him getting much run as long as Silvio can play.

@JayHawkFanToo I think that 40% number is ambitious. Moore was 35% in his one year at Cal and Vick in his two seasons playing real minutes is at 37% each year. If Garrett gets to 35% or higher I'll buy you a beer for that prediction. If the Lawsons can both be in the 33% range that would be pretty great. I'm still hopeful that Moore is a 15 mpg tops guy so I don't think he will have any 25+ point games.

@Barney I see 9-7 for this team. What ya got?

Best offense in NCAA basketball β€’ Sep 08, 2018 04:06 PM

I do think this team is very good, a top 5 team for sure. It's just when I start looking for potential problems that could result in a less than ideal tournament run, that one sticks out. I have this team at 82ppg, so overall I don't think offense will be a huge problem.

@KUSTEVE I said stagnate at times. Especially early on when large and athletic teams simply pack the paint. It will be a learning experience at least. Jmo.

Best offense in NCAA basketball β€’ Sep 08, 2018 02:47 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I actually think this offense might stagnate at times due to outside shooting.

My PPG estimates

Dedric 17

Grimes 12

Doke 10

Vick 9

KJ 9

Dotson 7

Silvio 7

Moore 6

Garrett 5

Self won't go 10 deep by the time the final rotation is set. Most likely he'll go 8 deep, possibly 9 at the most. I think it would McCormack and Garrett that see the minutes reduction once the rotation is trimmed down for conference play if it's an 8 man rotation and just McCormack if it's a 9 man rotation.

This feels like 9 due to the depth. I would figure Ochai, Mitch and McCormack to be the players being on the outside.

Very interesting to see how it all shakes out though.

Best offense in NCAA basketball β€’ Sep 08, 2018 02:24 PM

McCormack is better than Mitch, right now. No offense at all to Mitch, but KU is at a point where he shouldn't really be playing.

@Woodrow Kaep, especially when he got froze out was at worst a bottom 5 starter. To say otherwise is pretty disingenuous and remember I don't think Kaep is very good.

The Jets started 38 y/o Josh McCown 13 games last year for crying out loud. Tyrod Taylor and Jay Cutler started 14 games each last year. Something called a Trevor Siemian started 10 games for Denver. It's not like QB play is at an all time high. The arguments against Kaepernick not being good enough to start for a team last year are full of crap.

@BShark Great point. I also think we had limited defensive minded folks playing on the perimeter. Athletically wise, replacing Dedric for Svi will be huge. Malik wasn't that interested in playing defense, and Vick wasn't either at times. I give a pass to Devonte because his legs were about ready to fall off playing all those minutes. The depth will help a lot, but the athleticism we are adding is simply off the charts as compared to last year. I think we have a shot at being the best defensive team in the country.

Well Dedric isn't very athletic, by elite standards anyway. That's why he is in Lawrence instead of some NBA city. That said, Svi has TRex arms and the Lawsons have freak show length. So that is an immediate upgrade.

Newman bought in late, but Grimes should be an upgrade as long as he buys in. Better size and length.

Best offense in NCAA basketball β€’ Sep 06, 2018 12:58 PM

@BeddieKU23 I think the defensive issues were mainly centered around not having enough players.

Kansas had the #3 Kenpom adjusted defense in 2016. A team where the player with the 5th most minutes played 18 minutes a game. There were so many times over the last couple years where we would see players like Graham and Mason having to conserve energy on the defensive end. Self can wave teams again this year, so I would be on a top 10 defense for sure and it won't shock me if it is top 5.

He takes a TON of sacks. He is one of the least accurate passers. He has one of the worst Net Yards Gained per Passing Attempt. He doesn't throw a lot of TDs, percentage-wise. He doesn't get a lot of yards just in general.

I also said this ^^^^^^^^^^. These are important stats. He has a low completion percentage, he takes more sacks than any other QB in the game (and has for years), and therefore he doesn't get a lot of yards. I mean those two combos alone make him a backup.

He also has a piss poor 3rd down conversion rate, yards per drive, and points per drive stats.

Dive deeper than a weighted stat that only measures 3 things. You're better than that.

The fact that I think he could start for some teams definitely says more about the quality of QB play in the league than it does Kaep being good, imo.

Also strongly agree with this. You can make a case for Kaep, but don't make it based on a terrible stat like Passer rating.

Believe in something β€’ Sep 06, 2018 11:55 AM

Flacco is absolute garbage though. He was a five alarm tire fire last year.

Kcmatt7 said:

@justanotherfan are you citing passer rating? asking for a friend.

He is.

I would agree that on merit alone Kaepernick could probably have got a starting job, and definitely a back-up for basically any team.

He is not a great QB though and saying he is definitely better than all of those players listed is incorrect. I would say Kaepernick and Bortles are actually pretty similar. Each is better in different ways but the totality of it is about the same. Kaep's biggest problem is that he struggled to put any touch on his passes. Before all the drama and any of the kneeling my stance on Kaep is that he was overrated by many and actually pretty bad.

@Crimsonorblue22 Lots of good guys have cycled through the program on Self's watch. Recently in an article about how Chandler Lawson was talking to another recruit about KU he cited spiritual and personal growth as well for KJ and Dedric. Have to think Townsend and Simien are big factors there.

Tarik Black is another great guy, a shame he was only here one year. The rumors about him when he left Memphis were dirty and unfounded.

I hope Vick gets the help he needs.

@kjayhawks Human greed is the real problem with ANY system imo. That's how you end up with McCaskill's husband getting 131 million from the government and how you end up with situations like the Stony Brook apartments in Florida which just happens to be a publicized location of something that is happening around the country. Basically the "companies" that manage HUD properties take the millions and keep it for themselves instead of putting any of the money into maintaining the property. Classic exploitation of the poor. I could go on literally all night citing examples.

I would agree that the cost of living is too high. And you live in Kansas right? So it could be a LOT worse. You practically can't even make it in larger cities with an even higher cost of living w/ a lower level income/job.

I mean, we have seen the team be a bit better with Stanley. When the oline is trash you can't expect a pocket passer to do well unless their release time is insane and they are totally elite.

Yeah there is really no way to spin it.
